Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 143

The Completion of the Worship, its Udyapana, and the Fruit Thereof

Chapter 142All chaptersChapter 144

Verse 1 (skanda.2.143.1)

brahmovāca naivedyānaṁtaraṁ tāta kiṁ kartavyaṁ nṛbhiḥ prabho yatkartavyaṁ sahomāse tatsarvaṁ brūhi tattvataḥ

Brahma said: O father, O Lord! After the naivedya, what should men do? Whatever should be done in the month of Sahoma, tell me all of that truly.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.143.2)

śrībhagavānuvāca atha bhuktavate dattvā jalaiḥ karpūravāsitaiḥ ācamanaṁ ca tāṁbūlaṁ caṁdanaṁ karamārjanam

The Blessed Lord said: Then, to the one who has partaken of the meal, one should offer achamana with camphor-scented water, betel, sandal, and the wiping of the hands.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.143.3)

puṣpāṁjaliṁ tataḥ kuryādbhaktyā''darśaṁ pradarśayet nīrājanaṁ tataḥ kāryaṁ kārpūraṁ vibhave sati

Then one should offer a handful of flowers with devotion and show him a mirror; then, if means allow, arati should be performed with camphor.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.143.4)

samarpya mukuṭādīni bhūṣaṇāni vicakṣaṇaḥ tataḥ paścānmahābhāga prakalpya cchatracāmare

O greatly fortunate one, the discerning one, having offered the crown and other ornaments, should then arrange the umbrella and the chowries.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.143.5)

prasādasumukhaṁ dhyātvā śyāmasuṁdaravigraham japedaṣṭottaraśataṁ stuvīta stutibhiḥ prabhum

Meditating on his gracious face and his dark, beautiful form, one should recite the mantra one hundred and eight times, and praise the Lord with hymns.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.143.6)

śaṁkharaupyamayī mālā kāṁcanī ca viśeṣataḥ padmākṣaiścaiva subhagairvidrumairmaṇimauktikaiḥ

A garland of conch-shell or silver, and especially of gold; a fine garland of padmaksha beads, of coral, gems and pearls—

Verse 7 (skanda.2.143.7)

raciteṁdrākṣakairmālā tathaivāṁguliparvabhiḥ putrajīvamayī mālā śastā vai japakarmaṇi

—a garland made of indraksha beads, and likewise counting by the joints of the fingers; a garland of putrajiva seeds is praised for the act of japa.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.143.8)

na ca kramanna ca hasanna pārśvamavalokayan na padā padamākrāmya karaprāptaśirāstathā

Without walking, without laughing, without glancing sideways; without stepping foot over foot, and without letting the hand carry the mala up to the head—

Verse 9 (skanda.2.143.9)

nottiṣṭhanmanmanuṁ vidvānna japedvyagramānasaḥ japakāle na bhāṣeta vratahomārcanādiṣu

—the wise one should not rise while reciting my mantra, nor recite with a distracted mind; one should not speak during japa, nor during vows, homa, and worship.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.143.10)

gṛheṣvekaguṇaṁjāpyaṁ goṣṭhe daśaguṇaṁ bhavet nadītīre śataṁ vidyādagnyagāre daśā'dhikam

At home, japa yields one measure of merit; in a cowshed, ten times that; on a riverbank, know it to be a hundred times; in the fire-sanctuary, ten times more still.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.143.11)

tīrthādiṣu sahasraṁ syādanaṁtaṁ mama sannidhau evaṁ kṛtvā sahomāse yaḥ kuryācca pradakṣiṇām

At tirthas it becomes a thousand-fold, and in my very presence, endless. Having done this in the month of Sahoma, whoever performs circumambulation—

Verse 12 (skanda.2.143.12)

saptadvīpavatīpuṇyaṁ labhate sa padepade paṭhannāmasahasraṁ tu athavā nāma kevalam

—obtains, at every single step, the merit of the seven-continented earth, whether reciting the thousand names or merely the name alone.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.143.13)

ekā pradakṣiṇā bhaktyā dahetpāpaṁ sadā''hnikam pradakṣiṇīkṛtā tena saptadvīpā vasundharā

A single circumambulation, done with devotion, burns away the sin accumulated day by day; by it, the seven-continented earth is circumambulated.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.143.14)

dinasaptodbhavaṁ pāpaṁ mama tisraḥ pradakṣiṇāḥ tatkṣaṇānnāśayaṁtyeva pāpaṁ dehe daśā''hnikam

Three circumambulations of me instantly destroy sin arisen over seven days, and also destroy sin accumulated in the body over ten days.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.143.15)

kṛtāḥ pradakṣiṇā yena ekaviṁśati bhaktitaḥ bhrūṇahatyādipāpāni nāśamāyāṁti tatkṣaṇāt

Whoever performs twenty-one circumambulations with devotion — sins such as the killing of an embryo are destroyed that very instant.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.143.16)

aṣṭottaraśataṁ yena kṛtā bhaktyā pradakṣiṇāḥ teneṣṭaṁ kratubhiḥ sarvaiḥ samāptavaradakṣiṇaiḥ

Whoever performs one hundred and eight circumambulations with devotion — by him is accomplished the merit equal to all sacrifices completed with their proper fees.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.143.17)

pradakṣiṇīkṛtā tena tāvadvāraṁ vasundharā mātuḥ pradakṣiṇāstadvadbhūtadhātrīpradakṣiṇāḥ

By him the earth is deemed circumambulated that same number of times; the circumambulation of one's mother, and likewise of Mother Earth, is equal to it.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.143.18)

śāligrāmaśilāyāśca samametattrayaṁ smṛtam eko daṁḍaprapātaśca sahe saptapradakṣiṇāḥ

And the circumambulation of the Shaligrama stone too — these three are remembered as equal. In the month of Saha, one full prostration equals seven circumambulations.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.143.19)

samametaddvayaṁ no vā daṁḍapāto viśiṣyate pradakṣiṇe daṁḍapātaṁ yaḥ karoti sadā mama

These two are not truly equal — the full prostration is superior. Whoever always performs the full prostration together with circumambulation for me—

Verse 20 (skanda.2.143.20)

sahomāse viśeṣeṇa ākalpaṁ sa vaseddivi kalpādanaṁtaraṁ tāta cakravartī prajāyate

—especially in the month of Sahoma, he dwells in heaven until the end of the kalpa; and after the kalpa, O father, he is born a universal emperor.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.143.21)

cirāyurdhanavānbhogī dānavāndharmavatsalaḥ sahasranāmapaṭhanātpāpaṁ naśyettridhā kṛtam

He becomes long-lived, wealthy, enjoying good things, generous, and devoted to dharma; by the recitation of the thousand names, sin done in the threefold way (by body, speech, and mind) is destroyed.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.143.22)

atha kiṁ bahunoktena śṛṇu guhyaṁ ca me suta dāmodareti nāmnā vai bhavetprītirmamā'tulā

Now, what use is there in saying more — hear, my son, this secret of mine: by the name 'Damodara,' my affection becomes without compare.

Verse 23 (skanda.2.143.23)

guṇasaṁbaṁdhi mannāma kṛtaṁ mātrā yaśodayā yadā me dadhibhāṁḍasya sphoṭanaṁ gokule kṛtam

This name of mine, connected to a deed, was given by mother Yashoda when, in Gokula, the pot of curd was broken by me—

Verse 24 (skanda.2.143.24)

tadā yaśodayā gāḍhaṁ baddho dāmnā hyulūkhale tataḥ prabhṛti me nāma khyātaṁ dāmodareti ca

—then Yashoda bound me tightly to the mortar with a rope; from that time my name became famed as 'Damodara.'

Verse 25 (skanda.2.143.25)

namo dāmodarāyeti japedyaḥ susamāhitaḥ sūryodaye śucirbhūtvā trisahasraṁ dinedine

Whoever, composed and pure, recites 'Namo Damodaraya' three thousand times each day at sunrise—

Verse 26 (skanda.2.143.26)

sārddhalakṣatrayaṁ yāvattata udyāpayedbudhaḥ tarpaṇaṁ havanaṁ caiva brahmabhojyaṁ daśāṁśataḥ

—until three and a half lakh is reached, the wise one should then perform its udyapana, with tarpana, homa, and the feeding of brahmins with a tenth part of the total.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.143.27)

evaṁ yaḥ kurute bhaktyā tasya yacchāmi vāṁchitam dhanaṁ dhānyaṁ tathā dārānputrāṁścānyacca vāṁchitam

Whoever does this with devotion — to him I grant his heart's desire: wealth, grain, wife, sons, and whatever else is desired.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.143.28)

trisatyena mayā coktaṁ śraddhatsva tvaṁ mahāmate maṁtrarājamimaṁ putra kṛpayā me prakāśitam

O great-minded one, I have spoken this under a threefold oath of truth — believe it; my son, this king of mantras has been revealed only by my grace.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.143.29)

dāmodarāyeti paṭhannityaṁ kuryātpradakṣiṇam daṁḍapātaṁ tathā putra aṣṭāṁgena samanvitam

Reciting 'Damodaraya' always, one should perform circumambulation, and, my son, likewise the full prostration joined with its eight limbs.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.143.30)

padbhyāṁ karābhyāṁ jānubhyāmurasā śirasā tathā manasā vacasā dṛṣṭavā praṇāmoṣṭāṁga ucyate

With the two feet, the two hands, the two knees, the chest and the head — and with mind, speech, and sight — this is called the eight-limbed prostration.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.143.31)

śiro matpādayoḥ kṛtvā bāhubhyāṁ ca parasparam prapannaṁ pāhi māmīśa bhītaṁ mṛtyugrahā'rṇavāt

Having placed the head at my feet, with both arms outstretched — 'Save me, O Lord, surrendered and afraid, from this ocean of death and the seizing grip of the planets.'

Verse 32 (skanda.2.143.32)

paścāccheṣāṁ mayā dattāṁ śirasyādhāya sādaram evaṁ brūyāttato vatsa mama pūjāprapūrttaye

Thereafter, having reverently placed upon the head the remnant given by me, one should then say thus, O son, for the completion of my worship—

Verse 33 (skanda.2.143.33)

maṁtrahīnaṁ kriyāhīnaṁ bhaktihīnaṁ janārdana yatpūjitaṁ mayā deva paripūrṇaṁ tadastu me

'O Janardana, whatever worship of you, O God, has been performed by me, devoid of mantra, devoid of proper ritual, devoid of devotion — may that be complete for me.'

Verse 34 (skanda.2.143.34)

mṛdaṁgavādyena samaṁ praṇavena susaṁyutam evaṁ kāryaṁ sahomāse nṛtyaṁ puṇyapradaṁ nṛṇām

Together with the mridanga drum, well joined with the pranava, dance should thus be performed in the month of Sahoma — it bestows merit upon men.

Verse 35 (skanda.2.143.35)

gītaṁ vādyaṁ ca nṛtyaṁ ca tathā pustakavācanam pūjākāle caturvaktra sarvadā mama ca priyam

O four-faced one, song, instrumental music, and dance, and likewise the reading of sacred texts — these are always dear to me at the time of worship.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.143.36)

gītavādyādyabhāve ca mama nāmasahasrakam stavarājaṁ tathā putra gajeṁdrasya ca mokṣaṇam

In the absence of song and music, one should recite my thousand names, and, my son, the Stavaraja and the 'Liberation of Gajendra.'

Verse 37 (skanda.2.143.37)

anusmṛtiśca gītā ca stavanaṁ paṁcadhā matam paṁcastavaṁ mahābhāga mama prītikaraṁ param

Remembrance, the recitation of the Gita, and praise — these are considered fivefold together. O greatly fortunate one, this fivefold hymn is exceedingly pleasing to me.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.143.38)

pādodakaṁ pibedyo vai śāligrāmasamudbhavam paṁcagavyasahasraistu prāśitaiḥ kiṁ prayojanam

Whoever drinks the foot-water that has arisen from the Shaligrama — what need has he of drinking a thousand portions of panchagavya?

Verse 39 (skanda.2.143.39)

śāligrāmaśilātoyaṁ yaḥ pibedbiṁdunā samam mātuḥ stanyaṁ punarnaiva sa pibenmuktibhāgnaraḥ

Whoever drinks the water of the Shaligrama stone, even equal to a single drop, that man, a partaker of liberation, never again drinks his mother's milk.

Verse 40 (skanda.2.143.40)

āśaucaṁ naiva vidyeta sūtake mṛtake'pi ca yeṣāṁ pādodakaṁ mūrdhni prāśanaṁ ye prakurvate

For those who bear the foot-water upon the head and partake of it, there is no impurity even at the birth-taint or the death-taint.

Verse 41 (skanda.2.143.41)

aṁtakāle'pi yasyedaṁ dīyate pādayorjalam so'pi sadgatimāpnoti sadācārabahiṣkṛtaḥ

Whoever is given this water of the feet even at the time of death attains a good end, even if he has been excluded from proper conduct.

Verse 42 (skanda.2.143.42)

apeyaṁ pibate yastu bhuṁkte yadyapyabhojanam agamyāgamano yo vai pāpācāraśca yo naraḥ

Whoever drinks what should not be drunk, whoever eats what should not be eaten, whoever goes where he should not, and whoever is a man of sinful conduct—

Verse 43 (skanda.2.143.43)

so'pi pūto bhavatyāśu sadyaḥ pādāṁbudhāraṇāt cāṁdrāyaṇātpādakṛcchrādadhikaṁ pādayorjalam

—even he becomes instantly purified merely by holding the foot-water upon his head; this foot-water surpasses even the Chandrayana and Padakrichchhra penances.

Verse 44 (skanda.2.143.44)

aguruṁ kuṁkumaṁ vā'pi karpūraṁ cā'nulepanam mama pādāṁbusaṁspṛṣṭaṁ tadvai pāvanapāvanam

Agaru, saffron, or camphor-paste, when touched by the water of my feet, become the purifier of even the purified.

Verse 45 (skanda.2.143.45)

dṛṣṭipūtaṁ tu yattoyaṁ bhavedvai viprasattama tadvai pāpaharaṁ nṛṇāṁ kiṁ punaḥ pādayorjalam

O best of brahmins, water that becomes purified even by the mere sight of devotion removes the sins of men — how much more, then, the water of the feet!

Verse 46 (skanda.2.143.46)

priyastvaṁ me'grajaḥ putro viśeṣeṇa ca matpriyaḥ tadarthaṁ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ rahasyaṁ yacca me sthitam

You are my dear, firstborn son, and especially dear to me; for your sake I have told you this entire secret that abides within me.
