Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 146

The Fruit of Keeping Vigil on the Ekadashi Vow

Chapter 145All chaptersChapter 147

Verse 1 (skanda.2.146.1)

śrībhagavānuvāca śṛṇu putra pravakṣyāmi jāgarasya ca lakṣaṇam yena vijñātamātreṇa sulabho'haṁ sadā kalau

The Blessed Lord said: Listen, son, I shall declare the characteristics of the night-vigil, by merely knowing which I become ever easily attainable, even in the Kali age.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.146.2)

gītaṁ vādyaṁ ca nṛtyaṁ ca purāṇapaṭhanaṁ tathā dhūpaṁ dīpaṁ ca naivedyaṁ puṣpaṁ gandhānulepanam

Song, instrumental music, and dance, and likewise the reading of Puranas; incense, lamp, naivedya, flowers, and the anointing with fragrant paste—

Verse 3 (skanda.2.146.3)

phalārpaṇaṁ ca śraddhāṁ ca dānamiṁdriyasaṁyamam satyānvitaṁ vinidraṁ ca mudā madyajanānvitam

—the offering of fruit, faith, giving, and control of the senses; joined with truthfulness, free of sleep, joyfully, together with one's fellow devotees—

Verse 4 (skanda.2.146.4)

sāścaryaṁ caiva sotsāhaṁ pāpālasyādivarjanam pradakṣiṇāsamāyuktaṁ namaskārapuraḥsaram

—together with wonder and enthusiasm, abandoning sin, laziness and the like; joined with circumambulation, preceded by obeisance—

Verse 5 (skanda.2.146.5)

nīrājanasamāyuktamatihṛṣṭena cetasā yāmeyāme mahābhāga kuryādārārtikaṁ mama

—joined with the arati, with an exceedingly joyful heart — O greatly fortunate one, my arati should be performed at every watch of the night.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.146.6)

ṣaḍviṁśadguṇasaṁyuktamekādaśyāṁ ca jāgaram yaḥ karoti naro bhaktyā na punarjāyate bhuvi

Whoever performs the night-vigil on Ekadashi, joined with these twenty-six qualities, with devotion — that man is never born again on earth.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.146.7)

ya evaṁ kurute bhaktyā vittaśāṭhyavivarjitaḥ jāgaraṁ parayā bhaktyā sa līno jāyate mayi

Whoever does this with devotion, free of stinginess with wealth, performing the vigil with supreme devotion, becomes absorbed in me.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.146.8)

daṣṭāḥ kalibhujaṁgena svapante ye dine mama kurvaṁti jāgaraṁ naiva māyāpāśavimohitāḥ

Those bitten by the serpent of Kali, who sleep on my day and do not perform the night-vigil, are deluded by the noose of maya.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.146.9)

Those for whom Ekadashi arrives in the Kali age without the night-vigil are ruined, without doubt, since life itself is impermanent.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.146.10)

uddhṛtaṁ netrayugmaṁ ca dattvā vai hṛdaye padam kṛtaṁ ye naiva paśyaṁti pāpino mama jāgaram

Better for such sinners to have their two eyes plucked out than never to behold my vigil when it is performed.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.146.11)

abhāve vācakasyā'tha gītaṁ nṛtyaṁ ca kārayet vācake sati deveśa purāṇaṁ prathamaṁ paṭhet

In the absence of a reciter, one should arrange for song and dance; but when a reciter is present, O Lord of gods, the Purana should be read first.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.146.12)

aśvamedhasahasrasya vājapeyaśatasya ca puṇyaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ putra mama jāgaraṇe kṛte

O son, the merit of a thousand Ashvamedhas and a hundred Vajapeya sacrifices becomes a crore-fold when my night-vigil is performed.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.146.13)

pitṛpakṣe mātṛpakṣe bhāryāpakṣe ca mānada kulānyuddharate caitanmama jāgaraṇe kṛte

O giver of honor, the lineages of the father's side, the mother's side, and the wife's side are delivered, when my night-vigil is performed.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.146.14)

upoṣaṇadine vighne prārabdhe jāgare sati vihāya sthānaṁ tatrāhaṁ śāpaṁ dattvā vrajāmyaham

If an obstacle arises on the fasting day once the vigil has begun, I depart from that place, leaving it under a curse.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.146.15)

aviddhavāsare ye me prakurvaṁti hi jāgaram teṣāṁ madhye prahṛṣṭaḥ sannṛtyaṁ vai prakaromyaham

Among those who perform my vigil at the proper, unblemished time, I, exceedingly delighted, myself dance.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.146.16)

yāvaddināni kurute jāgaraṁ mama sannidhau yugā'yutāni tāvaṁti vasate mama veśmani

For as many days as one performs the vigil in my presence, for that many tens of thousands of yugas one dwells in my own house.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.146.17)

na gayāpiṁḍadānena na tīrthairbahubhirmakhaiḥ pūrvajā muktimāyāṁti vinaikādaśijāgarāt

Not by the offering of pinda at Gaya, nor by many tirthas and sacrifices, do the ancestors attain liberation, except through the Ekadashi vigil.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.146.18)

yaḥ kuryājjāgare pūjāṁ kusumairmama vāsare puṣpepuṣpe'śvamedhasya phalamāpnoti mānavaḥ

Whoever performs worship with flowers in my vigil on my day obtains, for every single flower, the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.146.19)

yaḥ kuryāddīpadānaṁ ca rātrau jāgaraṇe mama nimiṣe nimiṣe putra labhate go'yutaṁ phalam

Whoever offers the gift of a lamp at night in my vigil obtains, my son, for every instant, the fruit of ten thousand cows.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.146.20)

yo dadyājjāgare putra haviṣyānnasamudbhavam naivedyaṁ labhate puṇyaṁ śāliśailasamudbhavam

Whoever, my son, gives in the vigil food born of havishya obtains the merit of a naivedya offering made of the finest rice grown on a sacred mountain.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.146.21)

pakvānnāni ca yo dadyātphalāni vividhani ca jāgare me caturvaktra labhate gośataṁ phalam

O four-faced one, whoever gives cooked dishes and various fruits in my vigil obtains the fruit of a hundred cows.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.146.22)

karpūreṇa ca tāṁbūlaṁ dadāti mama jāgare madbhakto matprasādena saptadvīpā'dhipo bhavet

Whoever gives betel with camphor in my vigil, that devotee of mine, by my grace, becomes lord of the seven continents.

Verse 23 (skanda.2.146.23)

jāgare mama deveśa yaḥ kuryātpuṣpamaṇḍapam sa puṣpakavimānena krīḍate mama sadmani

O Lord of gods, whoever makes a pavilion of flowers in my vigil sports in my abode in the Pushpaka celestial car.

Verse 24 (skanda.2.146.24)

jāgare me tu yo dhūpaṁ sakarpūraṁ saguggulam dadāti dahate pāpaṁ janmalakṣasamudbhavam

Whoever gives incense with camphor and guggulu in my vigil burns away sin accumulated over a hundred thousand births.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.146.25)

snāpayejjāgare yo māṁ dadhikṣīraghṛtāṁbukaiḥ bhogāniha labhedvai sa hyante ca paramāṁ gatim

Whoever bathes me in the vigil with curd, milk, ghee and water obtains enjoyments here, and at the end, the supreme goal.

Verse 26 (skanda.2.146.26)

divyāṁ'barāṇi yo dadyātphalāni vividhāni ca sa ciraṁ vasate svarge taṁ tu saṁkhyāsamāni vai

Whoever gives divine garments and various fruits dwells long in heaven, for as many years as their number.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.146.27)

dadyādābharaṇaṁ yo me hemajaṁ ratnasaṁbhavam saptakalpāni vasate sotsaṁge matpriyo mama

Whoever gives me an ornament made of gold and set with gems, dear to me, dwells for seven kalpas in my very lap.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.146.28)

ghṛtena dīpakaṁ yo me gavyena ca viśeṣataḥ jvālayejjāgare rātrau nimiṣe goyutaṁ phalam

Whoever kindles a lamp for me with ghee, and especially with cow's ghee, at night in the vigil, obtains, for every instant, the fruit of ten thousand cows.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.146.29)

jāgare me caturvaktra karpūreṇa ca dīpakam yo jvālayeta nīrājaṁ kapilādānajaṁ phalam

O four-faced one, whoever kindles the arati-lamp with camphor for me in the vigil obtains the fruit of the gift of a tawny cow.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.146.30)

yaḥ punaḥ kurute dīpaṁ gītaṁ nṛtyaṁ ca pūjanam śatakratusamaṁ puṇyaṁ vratairdānaśatairapi

Whoever, moreover, performs the lamp-offering, song, dance, and worship obtains merit equal to a hundred sacrifices, a hundred vows, and a hundred gifts.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.146.31)

svayaṁ yaḥ kurute gītaṁ vilajjo nṛtyate yadi sa labhennimiṣārdhena koṭiyajñakṛtaṁ phalam

Whoever himself sings, or, if bashful, merely dances, obtains in half an instant the fruit equal to a crore sacrifices.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.146.32)

nivārayati yo gītaṁ nṛtyaṁ jāgaraṇe mama ṣaṣṭiyugasahasrāṇi pacyate rauravādiṣu

Whoever prevents song or dance in my vigil is cooked for sixty thousand yugas in Raurava and the other hells.

Verse 33 (skanda.2.146.33)

nṛtyamānasya martyasya ye kecinnikaṭe gatāḥ vimuktā dharmarājena muktā yāṁti ca matpadam

Whatever creatures come near a mortal who is dancing are freed by Dharmaraja, and go to my very abode.

Verse 34 (skanda.2.146.34)

nṛtyamānasya martyasya upahāsaṁ karoti yaḥ jāgare yāṁti nirayaṁ yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

Whoever mocks a mortal who is dancing in the vigil goes to hell for as long as the reign of fourteen Indras.

Verse 35 (skanda.2.146.35)

jāgare mama yaḥ kuryādbhaktyā pustakavācanam ślokasaṁkhyāyugānyeva sa vasenmama sannidhau

Whoever, with devotion, reads sacred texts aloud in my vigil dwells in my presence for as many pairs of yugas as there are verses recited.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.146.36)

pradakṣiṇāpradānena yatphalaṁ kathitaṁ budhaiḥ na tatkoṭimakhaiḥ puṇyaṁ yugasaṁkhyairavāpyate

What fruit the wise have declared for the gift of circumambulation is not obtained even by a crore sacrifices measured across ages.

Verse 37 (skanda.2.146.37)

dīpamālā mamāgre vai yaḥ kuryājjāgare suta vimānakoṭisaṁyukta ākalpaṁ vasate divi

O son, whoever makes a garland of lamps before me in the vigil dwells in heaven until the end of the kalpa, joined with a crore celestial cars.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.146.38)

mama bālacaritrāṇi jāgare paṭhate hi yaḥ yugakoṭisahasrāṇi śvetadvīpe vasennaraḥ

Whoever recites my childhood exploits in the vigil dwells in Shvetadvipa for a thousand crore yugas.

Verse 39 (skanda.2.146.39)

tasmājjāgaraṇaṁ kāryaṁ pakṣayoḥ śuklakṛṣṇayoḥ

Therefore the night-vigil should be performed in both the bright and dark fortnights.

Verse 40 (skanda.2.146.40)

yo gītāṁ paṭhate rātrau mama nāmasahasrakam vedoktānāṁ purāṇānāṁ jāgarātpuṇyamāpnuyāt

Whoever recites at night my thousand names, or the Gita, obtains from the vigil the merit of the Vedic scriptures and the Puranas.

Verse 41 (skanda.2.146.41)

dhenudānaṁ tu yaḥ kuryājjāgare mama putraka labhate nātra saṁdehaḥ saptadvīpavatīphalam

O son, whoever gives the gift of a cow in the vigil obtains, without doubt, the fruit of the seven-continented earth.

Verse 42 (skanda.2.146.42)

sarveṣāmeva puṇyānāṁ mahatpuṇyaṁ mahītale dvādaśījāgaraṁ putra prasiddhaṁ bhuvanatraye

O son, of all merits whatsoever on this earth, the greatest merit, renowned in the three worlds, is the Dvadashi vigil.

Verse 43 (skanda.2.146.43)

jāgaraṁ ye ca kurvaṁti karmaṇā manasā girā na teṣāṁ punarāvṛttirmama lokātkathaṁcana

Those who perform the vigil in deed, mind, and speech have, in no way whatsoever, any return from my world.

Verse 44 (skanda.2.146.44)

protsāhayitvā lokānyaḥ kurute jāgaraṁ niśi prāpnoti cakravartitvaṁ satyaṁ me vyāhṛtaṁ suta

O son, whoever, having encouraged others, performs the vigil at night, attains sovereignty as a universal emperor — this I have truly declared.

Verse 45 (skanda.2.146.45)

saṁmānitāḥ kakutsthena rātrau jāgarakāriṇaḥ svaśaktyā caiva dānena prāptaṁ rājyaṁ sudurlabham

Those who perform the night-vigil are honored even by kings of the Kakutstha lineage; by their own capacity and by giving, a most rare kingdom is attained.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.146.46)

ye kecidgāyakā viprā vādakā nartakāśca ye nartakīsahitā yāṁti mama loke sanātane

Whatever singers, brahmins, musicians and dancers there be, together with their female dancers, go to my eternal world.

Verse 47 (skanda.2.146.47)

duryoniṣu gataiḥ sarvaiḥ kṛtvā jāgaraṇaṁ mama saṁprāptaṁ pṛthivīśatvaṁ kāmukairmunisattama

O best of sages, even those who had fallen into evil births attained, through my night-vigil, sovereignty over the earth, though given to worldly desire.

Verse 48 (skanda.2.146.48)

niṣkāmā muktimāpannāḥ śvapacādyāśca jāgarāt viveko nāsti varṇānāṁ mama jāgarakāriṇām

Those free of desire attain liberation through the vigil, even outcastes and the like; there is no distinction of caste among those who perform my night-vigil.

Verse 49 (skanda.2.146.49)

na kalau pāvanaṁ dhyānaṁ na kalau jāhnavījalam na kalau pāvanaṁ jāpyaṁ muktvaikaṁ jāgaraṁ mama

There is no purifying meditation in the Kali age, no purifying Ganga-water in the Kali age, no purifying recitation in the Kali age, except my one night-vigil alone.

Verse 50 (skanda.2.146.50)

Those who, when the day of Dvadashi arrives, perform the night-vigil are blessed and, without doubt, have their purpose fulfilled in the Kali age.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.146.51)

na bhūyānmānuṣe loke dvādaśīvimukho naraḥ atītānāgatānvā'pi pātayennarake hi saḥ

A man who turns away from the Dvadashi should not be born again in the human world; he casts even his ancestors, past and future, into hell.

Verse 52 (skanda.2.146.52)

varameko guṇairyuktaḥ kiṁ jātairbahubhiḥ sutaiḥ dvādaśījāgarātsarvāṁstārayedyo hi pūrvajān

Better a single son endowed with virtues than many sons — for by the Dvadashi vigil, he ferries across all his ancestors.

Verse 53 (skanda.2.146.53)

māhātmyaṁ paṭhate bhaktyā mayoktaṁ jāgarodbhavam dvādaśīsaṁbhavaḥ putraḥ kulānāṁ tārayecchatam

Whoever recites with devotion this glory declared by me, born of the vigil; and a son born on the Dvadashi ferries across a hundred generations of his family.

Verse 54 (skanda.2.146.54)

agamyāgamane pāpamabhakṣyasyāpi bhakṣaṇe pāpaṁ vilayamāyāti kṛte jāgaraṇe suta

The sin of going where one should not go, and even of eating what should not be eaten — such sin, my son, is dissolved when the night-vigil is performed.

Verse 55 (skanda.2.146.55)

ajñānādyatkṛtaṁ pāpaṁ jñātvā yatpātakaṁ kṛtam pūrvajanmārjitaṁ pāpamiha janmani yatkṛtam

Sin done unknowingly, sin done knowingly, sin accumulated in former births, and sin done in this present birth—

Verse 56 (skanda.2.146.56)

siddhyaṁti sarvakāryāṇi manasā ciṁtitānyapi dvādaśyāṁ vai caturvaktra rātrau jāgaraṇe kṛte

—O four-faced one, all undertakings succeed, even those merely thought of in the mind, when the night-vigil is performed on the Dvadashi at night.

Verse 57 (skanda.2.146.57)

dvādaśījāgareṇaiva muktiṁ gacchaṁti mānavāḥ

By the Dvadashi vigil alone do men attain liberation.

Verse 58 (skanda.2.146.58)

na tatpuṇyaṁ kurukṣetre prayāge vasatāṁ kalau māhātmyaṁ vasatāṁ puṁsāṁ yatphalaṁ dvādaśīṣu ca

Whatever merit lies in dwelling at Kurukshetra or at Prayaga in the Kali age is not equal to the glory of those who observe the Dvadashi.

Verse 59 (skanda.2.146.59)

nā'śvamedhasahasraistu tīrthakoṭyavagāhanāt tatphalaṁ prāpyate putra dvādaśījāgare kṛte

O son, not even by a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices, nor by bathing at a crore tirthas, is that fruit obtained which is obtained by the Dvadashi vigil.

Verse 60 (skanda.2.146.60)

paṭhedvā śṛṇuyādvā'pi māhātmyaṁ dvādaśībhavam sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā sa labhecchāśvatīṁ gatim

Whoever recites or even merely hears this glory arising from the Dvadashi, his soul purified of all sin, attains the eternal state.

Verse 61 (skanda.2.146.61)

sarve duṣṭāḥ samastāśca saumyāstasya sadā grahāḥ saṁtaterna viyogastu dvādaśī yasya kāraṇam

For him whose cause is the Dvadashi, all planets, even the malefic ones, become ever benign; there is never any separation from his offspring.

Verse 62 (skanda.2.146.62)

mama kīrtirucirnityaṁ na vipadyeta karhicit raṇe rājakule caiva sarvadā vijayī bhavet

My fame and radiance ever remain his, never perishing; in battle and in the royal court, he is always victorious.

Verse 63 (skanda.2.146.63)

dharmopari matirnityaṁ bhaktirmayi sunirmalā pātakaṁ naiva lipyeta dvādaśībhaktito naram

His mind is ever fixed on dharma, his devotion to me utterly pure; sin never clings to a man through his devotion to the Dvadashi.

Verse 64 (skanda.2.146.64)

pretatvaṁ naiva tasyā'sti kṛte jāgaraṇe mama ekādaśyā vihīnasya paralokagatirnahi tasmātsarvaprayatnena kalau kāryaṁ hi taddinam

When my night-vigil is performed, he never suffers the state of a ghost; one devoid of Ekadashi has no path to the world beyond. Therefore, with every effort, that day should be observed in the Kali age.
