śrībhagavānuvāca śṛṇu dhyānaṁ caturvaktra vakṣyāmi prītamānasaḥ śrutenaiva ca saubhāgyaṁ labhate mānavo bhuvi

The Blessed Lord said: Listen, O four-faced one, to the meditation; I shall declare it with a pleased mind. By merely hearing it, a man obtains good fortune on this earth.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.149.2)

atha śrīmadudyānasaṁvītahaimasthalodbhāsiratnasphuranmaṁḍapāṁtaḥ lasatkalpavṛkṣoditoddīptaratnasthalādhiṣṭhitāṁbhojapīṭhā'dhirūḍham

Then, seated upon a lotus-throne set within a gem-lit pavilion on a golden floor surrounded by a garden, upon a jewel-bright ground beneath rising wish-fulfilling trees—

Verse 3 (skanda.2.149.3)

mahānīlanīlābhamatyaṁtabālaṁ guḍasnigdhavaktrāṁtavisrastakeśam alivrātaparyākulotphullapadmapramugdhānanaṁ śrīmadiṁdīvarākṣam

—dark as a great sapphire, exceedingly young, his hair loosened about a face glossy as jaggery, his enchanting face like a lotus surrounded by bees, lotus-eyed, radiant with beauty—

Verse 4 (skanda.2.149.4)

calatkuṁḍalollāsitotphullagallaṁ sughoṇaṁ suśoṇādharaṁ susmitāsyam anekollasatkaṁṭhabhūṣālasaṁtaṁ vahaṁtaṁ nakhaṁ pauṁḍarīkaṁ sunetram

—his cheeks bright with swaying earrings, fine-nosed, red-lipped, gently smiling, wearing many gleaming ornaments at the throat, bearing nails white as the pundarika lotus, and fine-eyed—

Verse 5 (skanda.2.149.5)

samuddhūsaroraḥsthalaṁ dhenudhūlyā supuṣṭāṁgamaṣṭāpadākalpadīptam kaṭīrasthale cārujaṁghoruyugme pinaddhaṁ kvaṇatkiṁkiṇījāladāmnā

—his broad chest dusted with the dust raised by cows, his well-formed limbs radiant with an eightfold ornament, at his waist and on his lovely calves and thighs bound with a string of tinkling bells—

Verse 6 (skanda.2.149.6)

hasaṁtaṁ lasadbaṁdhujīvaprasūnaprabhāpāṇipādāṁbujodārakāṁtyā kare dakṣiṇe pāyasaṁ vāmahaste dadhānaṁ navaṁ śuddhahaiyaṁgavīnam

—smiling, his lotus-like hands and feet radiant with the splendor of the bandhujiva flower, holding in his right hand payasa, and in his left hand fresh, pure butter—

Verse 7 (skanda.2.149.7)

mahībhārabhūtā'marārātiyūthā'nalaṁ pūtanādīnnihaṁtuṁ pravṛttam prabhuṁ gopikāgopavṛṁdena vītaṁ surendrādibhirvaṁditaṁ devadevam

—the Lord, come forth as a fire to consume the hordes of the gods' enemies who burden the earth, engaged in the slaying of Putana and the rest, surrounded by the cowherd women and cowherds, the God of gods worshipped by Indra and the other deities—

Verse 8 (skanda.2.149.8)

prage pūjayitvā tvanusmṛtya kṛṣṇaṁ bhujaṁgeṁdravajrādibhirbhaktinamraḥ sitāṁbhojahaiyaṁgavīnaiśca dadhnā vimiśreṇa dugdhena saṁprīṇayettam

—having worshipped in the morning, bowed with devotion, remembering Krishna together with the mantras of Bhujangendra, Vajra and the rest, one should please him with white lotus-colored fresh butter mixed with curd and milk.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.149.9)

iti prātarevā'rcayedatyutaṁ yo naraḥ pratyahaṁ śaśvadāstikyayuktaḥ labhetso'cireṇaiva lakṣmīṁ samagrāmiha pretya śuddhaṁ paraṁ dhāma bhūyāt

Thus whoever worships Achyuta every morning in this way, ever filled with faith, swiftly obtains complete prosperity here, and after death attains the pure, supreme abode.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.149.10)

mantraścoktaḥ purā putra ādau lokamanoharaḥ śrīmaddāmodarākhyo hi śṛṇu tasyādhikāriṇaḥ

My son, the world-enchanting mantra called 'Shrimad-Damodara' was declared before, at the very outset; now hear who is fit to receive it.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.149.11)

ayogyāya na dātavyo maṁtrarājastvayā suta yatnena gopanīyaṁ ca rahasyaṁ śīghrasiddhidam

This king of mantras should not be given to one unworthy, my son; it should be carefully guarded — a secret that grants swift accomplishment.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.149.12)

alasaṁ malinaṁ kliṣṭaṁ daṁbhamohasamanvitam daridraṁ rogiṇaṁ kruddhaṁ rāgiṇaṁ bhogalālasam

The lazy, the impure, the afflicted, one full of hypocrisy and delusion, the destitute, the diseased, the wrathful, the passionate, and one eager for pleasures—

Verse 13 (skanda.2.149.13)

asūyāmatsaragrastaṁ śaṭhaṁ paruṣavādinam anyāyenā'rjitadhanaṁ paradārarataṁ sadā

—one consumed by envy and malice, the deceitful, the harsh-spoken, one whose wealth is unjustly earned, ever devoted to another's wife—

Verse 14 (skanda.2.149.14)

viduṣāṁ vairiṇaṁ nityamajñaṁ paṁḍitamāninam bhraṣṭavrataṁ kliṣṭavṛttiṁ piśunaṁ duṣṭamānasam

—an enemy of the learned, ever ignorant yet conceited of his own scholarship, one fallen from his vows, of corrupt livelihood, a backbiter, of wicked mind—

Verse 15 (skanda.2.149.15)

bahvāśinaṁ krūraceṣṭamagragaṇyaṁ durātmanām kṛpaṇaṁ pāpinaṁ raudramāśritānāṁ bhayaṁkaram

—a glutton, of cruel conduct, foremost among the wicked-souled, miserly, sinful, fierce, and terrifying to those who take refuge with him—

Verse 16 (skanda.2.149.16)

evamādiguṇairyuktaṁ śiṣyaṁ naiva parigrahet gṛhṇīyādyadi taddoṣaḥ prāyo gurumupaspṛśet

—a disciple endowed with such faults should never be accepted; if one does accept him, that fault generally touches the guru himself.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.149.17)

amātyadoṣo rājānaṁ jāyādoṣaḥ patiṁ yathā tathā śiṣyakṛto doṣo guruṁ prāpnotyasaṁśayam

As the fault of a minister touches the king, and the fault of a wife touches the husband, so does the fault caused by a disciple reach the guru, without doubt.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.149.18)

tasmācchiṣyaṁ gururnityaṁ parīkṣyaiva parigrahet kāyena manasā vācā guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratam

Therefore a guru should always examine a disciple carefully before accepting him — one devoted to serving the guru in body, mind, and speech;

Verse 19 (skanda.2.149.19)

asteyavṛttimāstikyayuktaṁ mokṣakṛtodyamam brahmacaryarataṁ nityaṁ dṛḍhavratamakalmaṣam

—one of non-stealing conduct, endowed with faith, striving toward liberation, ever devoted to celibacy, of firm vows, and unblemished;

Verse 20 (skanda.2.149.20)

prasannahṛdayaṁ śuddhamaśaṭhaṁ vimalāśayam paropakāranirataṁ svārthe ca vigataspṛham

—of a gracious heart, pure, without deceit, of a clear disposition, devoted to helping others, and free of self-interest;

Verse 21 (skanda.2.149.21)

svacittavittadehaistu paritoṣakaraṁ guroḥ āśritānāṁ tathā putra paritoṣakaraṁ śucim

—one who, with his own mind, wealth, and body, brings satisfaction to the guru, and likewise, my son, brings satisfaction to those under his care, and is pure.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.149.22)

īdṛgvidhāya śiṣyāya maṁtraṁ dadyācca nānyathā yadyanyathā vadettasmindevatāśāpa āpatet

—only to a disciple of this kind should the mantra be given, and not otherwise; if one gives it otherwise, a divine curse falls upon him.

Verse 23 (skanda.2.149.23)

śṛṇu putra pravakṣyāmi gurorapi ca lakṣaṇam ebhistu lakṣaṇairyukto gurureva bhavennṛṇām

Listen, son, I shall now declare the characteristics of the guru too; only one endowed with these characteristics can truly become the guru of men—

Verse 24 (skanda.2.149.24)

samacetāḥ praśāṁtātmā vimanyuśca suhṛnnṛṇām sādhurmahānsamo loke sa guruḥ parikīrtitaḥ

—even-minded, of tranquil soul, free of anger, a well-wisher to all people, virtuous, great, and equanimous in the world — such a one is proclaimed a true guru.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.149.25)

mama vratadharo nityaṁ vaiṣṇavānāṁ susaṁmataḥ madāśrayakathāsakto mamotsavarataḥ sadā

Ever holding to my vows, well regarded among Vaishnavas, devoted to stories about me, ever fond of my festivals—

Verse 26 (skanda.2.149.26)

kṛpāsindhuḥ supūrṇārthaḥ sarvasattvopakārakaḥ niḥspṛhaḥ sarvataḥ siddhaḥ sarvavidyāviśāradaḥ

—an ocean of compassion, fully accomplished in purpose, a benefactor of all beings, free of craving in every way, accomplished, and expert in every branch of learning—

Verse 27 (skanda.2.149.27)

sarvasaṁśayasaṁchettā'nalaso gururādṛtaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ sarvakālajñaḥ kuryātsarveṣvanugraham

—a resolver of all doubts, never lazy, a respected teacher, a brahmin who knows the right time for everything — such a guru shows grace to all.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.149.28)

pūrvoktalakṣaṇairyuktaḥ śiṣya īdṛgvidhādguroḥ gṛhṇīyātputra tanmaṁtraṁ mārgaśīrṣe madāyane

O son, a disciple endowed with the aforementioned qualities should receive that mantra from a guru of this kind, in Margashirsha, my own dear season.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.149.29)

vaiṣṇavānāṁ vratānāṁ ca kuryātsvīkaraṇaṁ budhaḥ matpriyaṁ śṛṇuyācchaśvacchrīmadbhāgavataṁ param

The wise one should undertake the vows of the Vaishnavas, and should constantly listen to the Shrimad Bhagavatam, most dear to me.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.149.30)

śrīmadbhāgavataṁnāma purāṇaṁ lokaviśrutam śṛṇuyācchraddhayā yukto mama santoṣakāraṇam

One should, filled with faith, listen to the world-renowned Purana called Shrimad Bhagavatam — the cause of my contentment.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.149.31)

nityaṁ bhāgavataṁ yastu purāṇaṁ paṭhate naraḥ pratyakṣaraṁ bhavettasya kapilādānajaṁ phalam

Whoever daily recites the Bhagavata Purana obtains, for every single syllable, the fruit of the gift of a kapila cow.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.149.32)

ślokārdhaṁ ślokapādaṁ vā nityaṁ bhāgavatodbhavam paṭhate śṛṇuyādyastu gosahasraphalaṁ labhet

Whoever daily recites or hears even half a verse, or a single quarter-verse, arising from the Bhagavata, obtains the fruit of a thousand cows.

Verse 33 (skanda.2.149.33)

yaḥ paṭhetprayato nityaṁ ślokaṁ bhāgavataṁ suta aṣṭādaśapurāṇānāṁ phalamāpnoti mānavaḥ

O son, whoever, controlled, daily recites one verse of the Bhagavata, obtains the fruit of the eighteen Puranas.

Verse 34 (skanda.2.149.34)

nityaṁ mama kathā yatra tatra tiṣṭhanti vaiṣṇavāḥ kalibāhyā narāste vai ye'rcayanti sadā mama

Wherever my stories are constantly told, there the Vaishnavas abide; those men who worship me always are beyond the reach of Kali.

Verse 35 (skanda.2.149.35)

vaiṣṇavānāṁ tu śāstrāṇi ye'rcayanti gṛhe narāḥ sarvapāpavinirmuktā bhavaṁti suravanditāḥ

Those men who worship the scriptures of the Vaishnavas in their homes become freed of all sin, and are honored by the gods.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.149.36)

ye'rcayanti gṛhe nityaṁ śāstraṁ bhāgavataṁ kalau āsphoṭayaṁti valganti teṣāṁ prīto bhavāmyaham

Those who daily worship the Bhagavata scripture at home in the Kali age leap and dance for joy; I become pleased with them.

Verse 37 (skanda.2.149.37)

yāvaddināni he putra śāstraṁ bhāgavataṁ gṛhe tāvatpibaṁti pitaraḥ kṣīraṁ sarpirmadhūdakam

O son, for as many days as the Bhagavata scripture remains in the home, for that long the ancestors drink milk, ghee, and honeyed water.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.149.38)

yacchaṁti vaiṣṇave bhaktyā śāstraṁ bhāgavataṁ hi ye kalpakoṭisahasrāṇi mama loke vasaṁti te

Whoever gives the Bhagavata scripture with devotion to a Vaishnava dwells in my world for a thousand crore kalpas.

Verse 39 (skanda.2.149.39)

ye'rcayanti sadā gehe śāstraṁ bhāgavataṁ narāḥ prīṇitāstaiśca vibudhā yāvadā''bhūtasaṁplavam

Those men who always worship the Bhagavata scripture at home keep the gods pleased with them until the dissolution of all beings.

Verse 40 (skanda.2.149.40)

ślokārdhaṁ ślokapādaṁ vā varaṁ bhāgavataṁ gṛhe śataśo'tha sahasraiśca kimanyaiḥ śāstrasaṁgrahaiḥ

Better half a verse, or even a single quarter-verse, of the Bhagavata at home, than hundreds and thousands of other collections of scripture — what use are the others?

Verse 41 (skanda.2.149.41)

na yasya tiṣṭhate śāstraṁ gṛhe bhāgavataṁ kalau na tasya punarāvṛttiryāmyapāśātkadācana

He in whose house the Bhagavata scripture does not remain, in the Kali age, has no release ever from the noose of Yama.

Verse 42 (skanda.2.149.42)

kathaṁ sa vaiṣṇavo jñeyaḥ śāstraṁ bhāgavataṁ kalau gṛhe na tiṣṭhate yasya śvapacādadhiko hi saḥ

How is he to be known as a Vaishnava, in whose house the Bhagavata scripture does not remain, in the Kali age? He is indeed lower than an outcaste.

Verse 43 (skanda.2.149.43)

sarvasvenā'pi lokeśa kartavyaḥ śāstrasaṁgrahaḥ vaiṣṇavastu sadā bhaktyā tuṣṭyarthaṁ mama putraka

O Lord of the worlds, even at the cost of everything, a Vaishnava should always assemble a collection of scriptures with devotion, for my satisfaction, my son.

Verse 44 (skanda.2.149.44)

yatra yatra bhavetpuṇyaṁ śāstraṁ bhāgavataṁ kalau tatra tatra sadaivā'haṁ bhavāmi tridaśaiḥ saha

Wherever the meritorious Bhagavata scripture is found, in the Kali age, there I am ever present, together with the gods.

Verse 45 (skanda.2.149.45)

tatra sarvāṇi tīrthāni nadīnadasarāṁsi ca yajñāḥ saptapurī nityaṁ puṇyāḥ sarve śiloccayāḥ

There all tirthas, rivers, streams and lakes, sacrifices, the seven sacred cities, and all holy mountains are ever present.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.149.46)

śrotavyaṁ mama śāstraṁ hi yaśodharmajayārthinā pāpakṣayārthaṁ lokeśa mokṣārthaṁ dharmabuddhinā

O Lord of the worlds, my scripture should be heard by one desiring fame, dharma, and victory, for the destruction of sin, for liberation, by one of righteous mind.

Verse 47 (skanda.2.149.47)

śrīmadbhāgavataṁ puṇyamāyurārogyapuṣṭidam paṭhanācchravaṇādvā'pi sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

The Shrimad Bhagavatam is meritorious, granting long life, health, and nourishment; by reading it, or even by hearing it, one is freed from all sin.

Verse 48 (skanda.2.149.48)

na śṛṇvaṁti na hṛṣyaṁti śrīmadbhāgavataṁ param satyaṁsatyaṁ hi lokeśa teṣāṁ svāmī sadā yamaḥ

O Lord of the worlds, those who neither hear nor rejoice in the supreme Shrimad Bhagavatam — truly, truly, their master is ever Yama.

Verse 49 (skanda.2.149.49)

na gacchati yadā martyaḥ śrotuṁ bhāgavataṁ suta ekādaśyāṁ viśeṣeṇa nā'sti pāparatastataḥ

O son, when a mortal does not go to hear the Bhagavata, especially on Ekadashi, there is none more devoted to sin than he.

Verse 50 (skanda.2.149.50)

ślokaṁ bhāgavataṁ cā'pi ślokārdhaṁ pādameva vā likhitaṁ tiṣṭhate yasya gṛhe tasya vasāmyaham

He in whose house a verse of the Bhagavata, or half a verse, or even a quarter, remains written — in his house I dwell.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.149.51)

sarvā''śramā'bhigamanaṁ sarvatīrthā'vagāhanam na tathā pāvanaṁ nṝṇāṁ śrīmadbhāgavataṁ yathā

Neither visiting all the ashramas, nor bathing at all the tirthas, purifies men as much as the Shrimad Bhagavatam does.

Verse 52 (skanda.2.149.52)

yatra yatra caturvaktra śrīmadbhāgavataṁ bhavet gacchāmi tatratatrā'haṁ gauryathā sutavatsalā

O four-faced one, wherever the Shrimad Bhagavatam is found, there I go, like a cow devoted to her calf.

Verse 53 (skanda.2.149.53)

matkathāvācakaṁ nityaṁ matkathāśravaṇe ratam matkathāprītamanasaṁ nā'haṁ tyakṣyāmi taṁ naram

That man who constantly recites my stories, is devoted to hearing my stories, and whose mind delights in my stories — I never abandon him.

Verse 54 (skanda.2.149.54)

śrīmadbhāgavataṁ puṇyaṁ dṛṣṭvā nottiṣṭhate hi yaḥ sāṁvatsaraṁ tasya puṇyaṁ vilayaṁ yāti putraka

O son, whoever, seeing the meritorious Shrimad Bhagavatam, does not rise up — his merit for the whole year is destroyed.

Verse 55 (skanda.2.149.55)

śrīmadbhāgavataṁ dṛṣṭvā pratyutthānābhivādanaiḥ sanmānayeta taṁ dṛṣṭvā bhavetprītirmamā'tulā

Seeing the Shrimad Bhagavatam, one should honor it by rising and bowing; seeing this, my affection becomes incomparable.

Verse 56 (skanda.2.149.56)

dṛṣṭvā bhāgavataṁ dūrātprakrametsaṁmukhaṁ hi yaḥ padepade'śvamedhasya phalaṁ prāpnotyasaṁśayam

Whoever, seeing the Bhagavata from afar, advances to meet it face to face, obtains, at every single step, without doubt, the fruit of an Ashvamedha.

Verse 57 (skanda.2.149.57)

utthāya praṇamedyo vai śrīmadbhāgavataṁ naraḥ dhanaṁ putrāṁstathā dārānbhaktiṁ ca pradadāmyaham

Whoever, rising, bows to the Shrimad Bhagavatam — to him I grant wealth, sons, wife, and devotion too.

Verse 58 (skanda.2.149.58)

mahārājopacāraistu śrīmadbhāgavataṁ suta śṛṇvaṁti ye narā bhaktyā teṣāṁ vaśyo bhavāmyaham

O son, those men who, with great royal honors, listen with devotion to the Shrimad Bhagavatam — I become subject to their will.

Verse 59 (skanda.2.149.59)

mamotsaveṣu sarvepu śrīmadbhāgavataṁ param śṛṇvaṁti ye narā bhaktyā mama prītyai ca suvrata

O well-vowed one, those men who, at all my festivals, listen with devotion to the supreme Shrimad Bhagavatam, for my pleasure—

Verse 60 (skanda.2.149.60)

vastrālaṁkaraṇaiḥ puṣpairdhūpadīpopahārakaiḥ vaśīkṛto hyahaṁ taiśca satstriyā satpatiryathā

—with garments, ornaments, flowers, incense, lamps and other offerings, I too am brought under their sway, as a good husband is by a virtuous wife.
