Chapter 156All chaptersChapter 158

Verse 1 (skanda.2.157.1)

nārada uvāca yo martyo dvijavaryāya paryaṁkaṁ tu dadāti hi yatra svasthaḥ sukhaṁ śete śītānilaniṣevitaḥ

Narada said: Whatever mortal gives an excellent Brahmin a couch upon which he lies at ease and in comfort, cooled by gentle breezes,

Verse 2 (skanda.2.157.2)

dharmasādhanabhūte hi dehe nairujyamāpnute taṁ dattvā sakalaṁ tāpaṁ nirasya gatakalmaṣaḥ

—that Brahmin's body, the very instrument of dharma, attains freedom from disease. The giver, having thus cast off all torment and become free of sin,

Verse 3 (skanda.2.157.3)

akhaṇḍapadavīṁ yāti yogināmapi durlabhām vaiśākhe gharmataptānāṁ śrāntānāṁ tu dvijanmanām

—attains the unbroken state, hard to reach even for yogis. For twice-borns scorched and wearied by the heat in Vaishakha,

Verse 4 (skanda.2.157.4)

dattvā śramāpahaṁ divyaṁ paryaṁkaṁ manujeśvara na jātu sīdate loke janmamṛtyujarādibhiḥ

—O lord of men, having given a divine, fatigue-relieving couch, one never suffers in this world from birth, death, old age, and the like.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.157.5)

gṛhītvā brāhmaṇo yatra śete cājīvamāsthitaḥ āsīne sakalaṁ pāpaṁ jñānato'jñānataḥ kṛtam

Wherever a Brahmin, having received it, lies down and settles for the rest of his life — while he remains there, all sin committed, knowingly or unknowingly,

Verse 6 (skanda.2.157.6)

vilayaṁ yāti rājeṁdra karpūra iva cāgninā śayane brahmanirvāṇaṁ sa naro yāti niścitam

—O king of kings, dissolves away like camphor in fire. That man certainly attains brahma-nirvana upon that very bed.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.157.7)

yo dadyātkaśipuṁ māse vaiśākhe snānavallabhe sarvabhogasamāyuktastasminneva hi janmani

Whoever gives a cushion or mattress in the month of Vaishakha, dear for its bathing — endowed with every enjoyment in that very birth,

Verse 8 (skanda.2.157.8)

sānvayo vartate nūnaṁ rogādibhiranāhataḥ āyuṣyaṁ paramārogyaṁ yaśo dhairyaṁ ca viṁdati

—continues on, untouched by disease and its like, together with his family. He obtains long life, supreme health, fame, and fortitude.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.157.9)

nādhārmikaḥ kule tasya jāyate śatapauruṣam bhuktvā tu sakalānbhogāṁstataḥ pañcatvameṣyati

In his family, for a hundred generations, no unrighteous person is born. Having enjoyed all pleasures, he then attains death,

Verse 10 (skanda.2.157.10)

nirdhūtākhilapāpastu brahmanirvāṇamṛcchati śrotriyāya dvijeṁdrāya yo dadyādupabarhaṇam

—and, having shaken off all sin, attains brahma-nirvana. Whoever gives a pillow to a Vedic scholar, a lord among the twice-born,

Verse 11 (skanda.2.157.11)

sukhaṁ nidrā vinā yena na nṛṇāṁ jāyate kvacit sarveṣāmāśrayo bhūtvā bhuvi sāmrājyamaśnute

—without which people never obtain comfortable sleep — becomes a refuge for all and enjoys sovereignty upon this earth.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.157.12)

punaḥ sukhī punarbhogī punardharmaparāyaṇaḥ āsaptajanma rājeṁdra jāyate sarvato jayī

O king of kings, again happy, again prosperous, again devoted to dharma, he is born victorious in every way for seven births.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.157.13)

paścātsaptakulairyukto brahmabhūyāya kalpate tārṇaṁ kaṭaṁ tu yo dadyātkaṭamanyadathāpi vā

Afterward, together with seven generations of his family, he becomes fit for the state of Brahman. Whoever gives a mat of grass, or any other kind of mat,

Verse 14 (skanda.2.157.14)

tatra śete svayaṁ viṣṇuryatrasthaḥ parameśvaraḥ yathā jalagatā corṇā na jalairbhidyate kvacit

—there Vishnu himself, the Supreme Lord, lies, wherever he is. Just as a tuft of wool in water is never soaked through by that water,

Verse 15 (skanda.2.157.15)

tathā saṁsārago jantuḥ saṁsāre na ca badhyate āsane śayane saktaḥ kaṭadaḥ sarvataḥ sukhī

—so a creature moving through samsara is not bound by it. One devoted to giving seats and mats is happy in every way.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.157.16)

praśraye śayanārthāya yo dadyātkaṭakaṁbalam tāvanmātreṇa muktaḥ syānnātra kāryā vicāraṇā

Whoever, out of hospitality, gives a mat and blanket for another's rest, becomes liberated by that much alone; there is no need to deliberate on this.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.157.17)

nidrayā hīyate duḥkhaṁ nidrayā hīyate śramaḥ sā nidrā kaṭasaṁsthasya sukhaṁ saṁjāyate dhuvam

By sleep, suffering diminishes; by sleep, fatigue diminishes. That very sleep of one resting on a mat surely becomes a source of happiness for its giver.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.157.18)

yo dayātkaṁbalaṁ rājanvaiśākhe mādhavā''game apamṛtyoḥ kālamṛtyormukto jīvati vai śatam

O king, whoever gives a blanket in Vaishakha at the coming of Madhava, freed from untimely death and from death by time, truly lives a hundred years.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.157.19)

dadyādvastraṁ sūkṣmataraṁ dvijeṁdre gharmakarśite pūrṇamāyuḥ samāpnoti paratra ca parāṁ gatim

One should give very fine cloth to a foremost Brahmin wasted by heat; he obtains a full lifespan and, in the hereafter, the supreme state.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.157.20)

atastāpaharaṁ divyaṁ karpūraṁ tu dvijātaye dattvā mokṣamavāpnoti duḥkhaśāṁtiṁ ca viṁdati

Therefore, having given divine, heat-removing camphor to a twice-born, one attains liberation and finds the pacification of suffering.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.157.21)

kusumāni ca yo dadyātkukumaṁ ca dvijātaye sārvabhaumo bhavedrājā sarvalokavaśaṁkaraḥ

Whoever gives flowers and saffron to a twice-born becomes a universal sovereign, holding sway over every world.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.157.22)

putrapautrādibhogāṁśca bhuktvā mokṣamavāpnuyāt tvagasthigatasaṁtāpaṁ sadyo harati candanam

He enjoys the pleasures of sons, grandsons and the like, and attains liberation. Sandalwood instantly removes the burning fever reaching skin and bone;

Verse 23 (skanda.2.157.23)

tāpatrayavinirmuktastaddattvā mokṣamāpnuyāt auśīraṁ cāṣakaṁ kauśaṁ yo dadyājjalavāsitam

—by giving it, one is freed from the three kinds of affliction and attains liberation. Whoever gives a vetiver-root fan or a silk fan, scented with water,

Verse 24 (skanda.2.157.24)

sarvabhogeṣu rājeṁdra sa tu devasahāyavān pāpahāniṁ duḥkhahāniṁ prāpya nirvṛtimāpnuyāt

—O king of kings, amid every enjoyment he becomes a companion of the gods; having destroyed both sin and sorrow, he attains bliss.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.157.25)

gorocaṁ mṛganābhiṁ ca dadyādvaiśākhadharmavit tāpatrayavinirmuktaḥ paraṁ nirvāṇamṛcchati

One who knows the Vaishakha observances should give gorochana and musk; freed from the three afflictions, he attains supreme liberation.

Verse 26 (skanda.2.157.26)

tāṁbūlaṁ ca sakarpūraṁ yo dadyānmeṣage ravau sārvabhaumasukhaṁ bhuktvā paraṁ nirvāṇamṛcchati

Whoever gives betel with camphor while the sun is in Aries enjoys the happiness of a universal sovereign and thereafter attains supreme liberation.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.157.27)

śatapatrīṁ ca yūthīṁ ca meṣamāse dadannaraḥ sa sārvabhaumo bhavati paścānmokṣaṁ ca viṁdati

The man who, in the month when the sun is in Aries, gives shatapatri and jasmine flowers becomes a universal sovereign and thereafter obtains liberation as well.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.157.28)

ketakīṁ mallikāṁ vā'pi yo dadyānmādhavā''game sa tu mokṣamavāpnoti madhuśāsanaśāsanāt

Whoever gives ketaki or jasmine flowers at Madhava's coming attains liberation by the command of the Lord of Madhu.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.157.29)

pūgīphalaṁ tu yo dadyātsugandhaṁ tu dvijātaye nārikelaphalaṁ rājaṁstasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu

Whoever gives betel-nut, fragrant substances, or coconut to a twice-born — O king, hear the fruit of his merit.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.157.30)

sapta janma bhavedvipro dhanāḍhyo vedapāragaḥ paścātsaptakulairyukto viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati

For seven births he becomes a wealthy Brahmin, master of the Vedas; afterward, together with seven generations of his family, he goes to Vishnu's world.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.157.31)

viśrāmamaṇḍapaṁ yastu kṛtvā dadyāddvijanmane tasya puṇyaphalaṁ vaktuṁ nāhaṁ śaknomi bhūpate

O lord of the earth, whoever builds a resting pavilion and gives it for a twice-born — I am unable to describe the fruit of his merit.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.157.32)

succhāyāmaṇḍapaṁ yastu sikatā''kīrṇamañjasā saprapaṁ kārayedyastu sa tu lokādhipo bhavet

Whoever truly builds a well-shaded pavilion, strewn with sand, together with a water-booth, becomes a lord of the world.

Verse 33 (skanda.2.157.33)

mārgodyānaṁ taḍāgaṁ vā kūpaṁ maṇḍapameva ca yaḥ karoti sa dharmātmā tasya putraistu kiṁ phalam

Whoever makes a roadside garden, a pond, a well, or a pavilion is a righteous soul — what further benefit would even sons bring him?

Verse 34 (skanda.2.157.34)

kūpastaḍāgamudyānaṁ maṇḍapaṁ ca prapā tathā saddharmakaraṇaṁ putraḥ saṁtānaṁ saptadhocyate

A well, a pond, a garden, a pavilion, and a water-booth, the practice of true dharma, and a son — progeny is declared to be of seven kinds.

Verse 35 (skanda.2.157.35)

eteṣvanyatamābhāve nordhvaṁ gacchaṁti mānavāḥ sacchāstra śravaṇaṁ tīrthayātrā sajanasaṁgatiḥ

In the absence of even one of these, men do not go to the higher worlds. The hearing of true scriptures, pilgrimage to sacred fords, association with good people,

Verse 36 (skanda.2.157.36)

jaladānaṁ cānnadānamaśvatthāropaṇaṁ tathā putraśceti ca saṁtānaṁ sapteme'tivido viduḥ

—the gift of water, the gift of food, and the planting of an ashvattha tree, together with a son — the truly wise know these seven as 'progeny'.

Verse 37 (skanda.2.157.37)

nāsaṁtatirlabhellokānkṛtvā dharmaśatānyapi tasmātsaṁtānamanvicchetsaṁtāneṣvekato vrajet

One devoid of such progeny does not obtain the higher worlds, even after performing hundreds of righteous acts. Therefore one should seek progeny, or at least take up one of these forms of it.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.157.38)

paśūnāṁ pakṣiṇāṁ caiva mṛgāṇāṁ caiva bhūruhām nordhvalokaṁ sukhaṁ yāti manuṣyāṇāṁ tu kā kathā

Even beasts, birds, wild creatures, and trees do not happily reach the higher worlds without this — what then to say of human beings?

Verse 39 (skanda.2.157.39)

pūgīphalasamāyuktaṁ nāgavallīdalairyutam kapūrāgurusaṁyuktaṁ dadattāṁbūlamuttamam

Whoever gives excellent betel, joined with areca nut and betel leaves, blended with camphor and agaru,

Verse 40 (skanda.2.157.40)

śārīraiḥ sakalaiḥ pāpairmucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ tāṁbūlado yaśo dhairyaṁ śriyamāpnoti niścitam

—is freed from all bodily sins, without doubt. The giver of betel certainly obtains fame, fortitude, and prosperity.

Verse 41 (skanda.2.157.41)

rogī dattvā virogaḥ syādarogī mokṣamāpnuyāt vaiśākhe māsi yo dadyāttakraṁ tāpavināśanam

By giving this, the sick become free of illness and the healthy attain liberation. Whoever, in the month of Vaishakha, gives buttermilk that destroys the summer heat,

Verse 42 (skanda.2.157.42)

vidyāvāndhanavānbhūmau jāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ na takrasadṛśaṁ dānaṁ gharmakāleṣu vidyate

—is born on earth learned and wealthy, without doubt. No gift equals buttermilk during the season of heat.

Verse 43 (skanda.2.157.43)

tasmāttakraṁ pradātavyamadhvaśrāṁtadvijātaye jaṁbīrasurasopetaṁ lasallavaṇamiśritam

Therefore buttermilk should be given to a twice-born wearied from the road, mixed with lemon and fragrant herbs, blended with a touch of salt.

Verse 44 (skanda.2.157.44)

yastakramarucighnaṁ tu dattvā mokṣamavāpnuyāt yo dadyāddadhikhaṁḍaṁ tu vaiśākhe gharmaśāṁtaye

Whoever gives this appetite-restoring buttermilk attains liberation. Whoever, in Vaishakha, gives a preparation of curds to pacify the heat,

Verse 45 (skanda.2.157.45)

tasya puṇyaphalaṁ vaktuṁ nāhaṁ śaknomi bhūmipa yo dadyāttaṁḍulāndivyānmadhusūdanavallabhe

—O lord of the earth, I am unable to describe the fruit of his merit. Whoever gives fine rice-grains in this month beloved of Madhusudana,

Verse 46 (skanda.2.157.46)

sa labhetpūrṇamāyuṣyaṁ sarvayajñaphalaṁ labhet yo ghṛtaṁ tejaso rūpaṁ gavyaṁ dadyāddvijātaye so'śvamedhaphalaṁ prāpya modate viṣṇumaṁdire

—obtains a full lifespan and the fruit of every sacrifice. Whoever gives cow's ghee, the very form of radiance, to a twice-born, obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice and rejoices in the abode of Vishnu.

Verse 47 (skanda.2.157.47)

urvāruguḍasaṁmiśraṁ vaiśākhe meṣage ravau sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ śvetadvīpe vaseddhruvam

Whoever, in Vaishakha while the sun is in Aries, gives cucumber mixed with jaggery, is freed from all sin and surely dwells in Shvetadvipa.

Verse 48 (skanda.2.157.48)

yaścekṣudaṁḍaṁ sāyāhne divā tāpopaśāntaye brāhmaṇāya ca yo dadyāttasya puṇyamanaṁtakam

Whoever gives a stalk of sugarcane to a Brahmin in the evening, to pacify the day's heat, earns endless merit.

Verse 49 (skanda.2.157.49)

vaiśākhe pānakaṁ dattvā sāyāhne śramaśāntaye sarvapāpavinirmukto viṣṇoḥ sāyujyamāpnuyāt

Having given a cooling drink in Vaishakha in the evening to relieve fatigue, freed from all sin, one attains union with Vishnu.

Verse 50 (skanda.2.157.50)

saphalaṁ pānakaṁ meṣamāse sāyaṁ dvijātaye dadyāttena pitṝṇāṁ tu sudhāpānaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

Whoever gives, in the evening during the month when the sun is in Aries, a fruit-flavoured cooling drink to a twice-born, thereby grants his ancestors, without doubt, a draught of nectar.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.157.51)

vaiśākhe pānakaṁ cūtasupakvaphalasaṁyutam tasya sarvāṇi pāpāni vināśaṁ yāṁti niścitam

For one who gives, in Vaishakha, a cooling drink combined with well-ripened mango, all his sins certainly go to destruction.

Verse 52 (skanda.2.157.52)

yo dadyāccaitradarśe tu kumbhaṁ pūrṇaṁ tu pānakaiḥ gayāśrāddhaśataṁ tena kṛtameva na saṁśayaḥ

Whoever, on the new-moon of Chaitra, gives a pot full of the cooling drink has thereby, without doubt, performed a hundred shraddhas at Gaya.

Verse 53 (skanda.2.157.53)

kastūrī karpuropetaṁ mallikośīrasaṁyutam kalaśaṁ pānakaiḥ pūrṇaṁ caitradarśe tu mānavaḥ dadyātpitṝnsamuddiśya sa ṣaṇṇavatido bhavet

The man who, on the new-moon of Chaitra, dedicates to his ancestors a pitcher full of the cooling drink, scented with musk and camphor and combined with jasmine and vetiver root, becomes the giver of the merit of ninety-six generations.
