by that sacrifice, duly performed, the king, of excellent conduct, shone in an instant like Indra, lord of the gods, in heaven.
Verse 52 (skanda.2.183.52)

Meanwhile, there arrived a sage, foremost among the self-controlled, a disciple of the sage Vishvamitra, remembered by the name Kautsa.
Verse 53 (skanda.2.183.53)

For his guru's fee, pressed insistently by his guru — 'bring quickly fourteen crores of gold pieces,' thus in anger he had been asked —
Verse 54 (skanda.2.183.54)

that sage Kautsa then came, to make his request respectfully, to Raghu, the crest-jewel among kings, who had given away all his wealth as sacrificial fee.
Verse 55 (skanda.2.183.55)

Recognizing him as he arrived, Raghu, that scorcher of foes, rising respectfully, duly honored him; but all the rites of hospitality for him had to be performed with clay vessels.
Verse 56 (skanda.2.183.56)

Seeing such meager materials of hospitality, that lord of sages was astonished and joyless, and, abandoning hope of receiving his fee, spoke a gentle word, being skilled in the knowledge of speech.
Verse 57 (skanda.2.183.57)
kautsa uvāca rājannabhyudayaste’stu gacchāmyanyatra sāṁpratam
Kautsa said: O king, may prosperity be yours; I shall now go elsewhere.

gurvarthāharaṇāyaiva dattasarvasvadakṣiṇam tvāṁ na yāce dhanābhāvādato’nyatra vrajāmyaham
Since it was only to obtain wealth for my guru's fee that I came, and you have already given away all your wealth as sacrificial fee, I shall not ask you, for want of means; therefore I go elsewhere.
Verse 59 (skanda.2.183.59)
