Verse 1 (skanda.2.186.1)

अगस्त्य उवाच तीर्थमन्यत्प्रवक्ष्यामि क्षीरोदकमिति स्मृतम् सीताकुण्डाच्च वायव्ये वर्त्तते गुणसुन्दरम् पुण्यैकनिचयस्थानं सर्वदुःखविनाशनम्

agastya uvāca tīrthamanyatpravakṣyāmi kṣīrodakamiti smṛtam sītākuṇḍācca vāyavye varttate guṇasundaram puṇyaikanicayasthānaṁ sarvaduḥkhavināśanam

Agastya said: I shall now tell of another sacred ford, remembered as Kshirodaka; it lies to the north-west of Sita-kunda, beautiful in its qualities, a sole repository of merit, a destroyer of all sorrow.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.186.2)

पुरा दशरथो राजा पुत्रेष्टिनाम नामतः चकार विधिवद्यज्ञं पुत्रार्थं यत्र चादरात्

purā daśaratho rājā putreṣṭināma nāmataḥ cakāra vidhivadyajñaṁ putrārthaṁ yatra cādarāt

Formerly, King Dasharatha duly and reverently performed, at that very place, the sacrifice named Putreshti, for the sake of offspring.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.186.3)

क्रतुं समापयामास सानन्दो भूरिदक्षिणम् यज्ञान्ते क्रतुभुक्तत्र मूर्तिमान्समदृश्यत

kratuṁ samāpayāmāsa sānando bhūridakṣiṇam yajñānte kratubhuktatra mūrtimānsamadṛśyata

He, joyful, completed the sacrifice with abundant sacrificial fees; at the end of the sacrifice, the divine consumer of the oblation appeared there in embodied form.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.186.4)

हस्ते कृत्वा हेमपात्रं हविःपूर्णमनुत्तमम् तस्मिन्हविषि संकीर्णं वैष्णवं तेज उत्तमम् चतुर्विधं विभज्यैव पत्नीभ्यो दत्तवान्नृपः

haste kṛtvā hemapātraṁ haviḥpūrṇamanuttamam tasminhaviṣi saṁkīrṇaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ teja uttamam caturvidhaṁ vibhajyaiva patnībhyo dattavānnṛpaḥ

Holding in his hand an unsurpassed golden vessel filled with the sacred oblation, in which was infused the supreme Vaishnava splendor, the king divided it into four parts and gave it to his queens.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.186.5)

यत्र तत्क्षीरसंप्राप्तिर्जाता परमदुर्लभा क्षीरोदकमिति ख्यातं तत्स्थानं पापनाशनम् उदकेनाभिव्यक्तं च उत्तमं च फलप्रदम्

yatra tatkṣīrasaṁprāptirjātā paramadurlabhā kṣīrodakamiti khyātaṁ tatsthānaṁ pāpanāśanam udakenābhivyaktaṁ ca uttamaṁ ca phalapradam

The place where that most rare attainment of the milk-oblation occurred became known as Kshirodaka, a destroyer of sin, manifest through that water, bestowing excellent fruit.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.186.6)

तत्र स्नात्वा नरो धीमान्विजितेन्द्रिय आदरात् सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति पुत्रांश्च सुबहुश्रुतान्

tatra snātvā naro dhīmānvijitendriya ādarāt sarvānkāmānavāpnoti putrāṁśca subahuśrutān

A wise man, self-controlled, having reverently bathed there, obtains all his desires, and sons of great learning.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.186.7)

आश्विने शुक्लपक्षस्य एकादश्यां जितव्रतः तत्र स्नात्वा विधानेन दत्त्वा शक्त्या द्विजन्मने

āśvine śuklapakṣasya ekādaśyāṁ jitavrataḥ tatra snātvā vidhānena dattvā śaktyā dvijanmane

On the eleventh of the bright fortnight of Ashvina, one true to his vow, having duly bathed there and having given, according to his ability, to a brahmin,

Verse 8 (skanda.2.186.8)

विष्णुं संपूज्य विधिवत्सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् पुत्रानवाप्नुयाद्विद्धि धर्मांश्च विधिवन्नरः

viṣṇuṁ saṁpūjya vidhivatsarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt putrānavāpnuyādviddhi dharmāṁśca vidhivannaraḥ

and having duly worshipped Vishnu, obtains all his desires; know that a man duly obtains sons and righteous merit thus.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.186.9)

तस्मात्क्षीरोदकस्थानान्नैर्ऋते दिग्दले श्रितम् ख्यातं बृहस्पतेः कुण्डमुद्दंडाचंडमंडितम्

tasmātkṣīrodakasthānānnairṛte digdale śritam khyātaṁ bṛhaspateḥ kuṇḍamuddaṁḍācaṁḍamaṁḍitam

To the south-west of that place of Kshirodaka is situated the renowned tank of Brihaspati, adorned with towering splendor,

Verse 10 (skanda.2.186.10)

सर्वपापप्रशमनं पुण्यामृततरंगितम् यत्र साक्षात्सुरगुरुर्निवासं किल निर्ममे

sarvapāpapraśamanaṁ puṇyāmṛtataraṁgitam yatra sākṣātsuragururnivāsaṁ kila nirmame

a calmer of all sin, its waves of sacred nectar, where the guru of the gods himself made his dwelling.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.186.11)

यज्ञं च विधिवच्चक्रे बृहस्पतिरुदारधीः नानामुनिगणैर्युक्तं रम्यं बहुफलप्रदम् सुपर्णच्छायसंपन्नं कुण्डं तत्पापिदुर्ल्लभम्

yajñaṁ ca vidhivaccakre bṛhaspatirudāradhīḥ nānāmunigaṇairyuktaṁ ramyaṁ bahuphalapradam suparṇacchāyasaṁpannaṁ kuṇḍaṁ tatpāpidurllabham

Brihaspati, of noble mind, duly performed a sacrifice there; that tank, thronged with various groups of sages, delightful, bestowing abundant fruit, blessed with fine shade, is hard for a sinner to attain.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.186.12)

इन्द्रादयोऽपि विबुधा यत्र स्नात्वा प्रयत्नतः मनोभीष्टफलं प्राप्ताः सौंदर्यौदार्यतुंदिलाः

indrādayo’pi vibudhā yatra snātvā prayatnataḥ manobhīṣṭaphalaṁ prāptāḥ sauṁdaryaudāryatuṁdilāḥ

Even the gods, headed by Indra, having diligently bathed there, obtained the fruit desired in their hearts, and became full of beauty and generosity.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.186.13)

यत्र स्नानेन दानेन नरो मुच्येत किल्बिषात्

yatra snānena dānena naro mucyeta kilbiṣāt

By bathing and giving charity there, a man is freed from sin.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.186.14)

भाद्रे शुक्ले तु पंचम्यां यात्रा तत्र फलप्रदा अन्यदापि गुरोर्वारे स्नानं बहुफलप्रदम्

bhādre śukle tu paṁcamyāṁ yātrā tatra phalapradā anyadāpi gurorvāre snānaṁ bahuphalapradam

On the fifth of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, the festival there is fruitful; even at another time, bathing on Thursday is highly fruitful.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.186.15)

बृहस्पतेस्तथा विष्णोः पूजां तत्र य आचरेत् सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोके स मोदते

bṛhaspatestathā viṣṇoḥ pūjāṁ tatra ya ācaret sarvapāpavinirmukto viṣṇuloke sa modate

Whoever performs worship of Brihaspati and of Vishnu there, freed from all sin, rejoices in the world of Vishnu.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.186.16)

भवेद्बृहस्पतेः पीडा यस्य गोचरवेधतः तेनात्र विधिवत्स्नानं कार्यं संकल्पपूर्वकम्

bhavedbṛhaspateḥ pīḍā yasya gocaravedhataḥ tenātra vidhivatsnānaṁ kāryaṁ saṁkalpapūrvakam

Whoever suffers affliction from Jupiter's malefic transit through his zodiac sign should duly bathe here, preceded by a formal resolve.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.186.17)

होमं कृत्वा गुरोर्मूर्तिः सुवर्णेन विनिर्मिता स्थित्वा जले प्रदेया वै पीतांबरसमन्विता

homaṁ kṛtvā gurormūrtiḥ suvarṇena vinirmitā sthitvā jale pradeyā vai pītāṁbarasamanvitā

Having performed the fire-oblation, an image of Guru, made of gold, clad in yellow, should be given while standing in the water.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.186.18)

वेदज्ञायातिशुचये स्नात्वा पीडापनुत्तये होमं च कारयेत्तत्र ग्रहजाप्यविधानतः

vedajñāyātiśucaye snātvā pīḍāpanuttaye homaṁ ca kārayettatra grahajāpyavidhānataḥ

Having bathed for the removal of the affliction, it should be given to a most pure knower of the Vedas; and fire-oblation should be performed there according to the procedure for the japa of the planetary deities.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.186.19)

एवं कृते न संदेहो ग्रहपीडा प्रणश्यति

evaṁ kṛte na saṁdeho grahapīḍā praṇaśyati

When this is done, without doubt, the affliction of the planet is destroyed.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.186.20)

तद्दक्षिणे मुनिश्रेष्ठ रुक्मिणीकुण्डमुत्तमम् चकार यत्स्वयं देवी रुक्मिणी कृष्णवल्लभा

taddakṣiṇe muniśreṣṭha rukmiṇīkuṇḍamuttamam cakāra yatsvayaṁ devī rukmiṇī kṛṣṇavallabhā

O best of sages, to the south of that is the excellent Rukmini-kunda, which the goddess Rukmini, beloved of Krishna, herself made.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.186.21)

तत्र विष्णुः स्वयं चक्रे निवासं सलिले तदा वरप्रदानात्स्नेहेन भार्यायाः प्रगुणीकृतम्

tatra viṣṇuḥ svayaṁ cakre nivāsaṁ salile tadā varapradānātsnehena bhāryāyāḥ praguṇīkṛtam

There Vishnu himself then made his abode in the water, made excellent out of love for his wife, through the granting of a boon.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.186.22)

तत्र स्नानं तथा दानं होमं वैष्णवमंत्रकम् द्विजपूजां विष्णुपूजां कुर्वीत प्रयतो नरः

tatra snānaṁ tathā dānaṁ homaṁ vaiṣṇavamaṁtrakam dvijapūjāṁ viṣṇupūjāṁ kurvīta prayato naraḥ

A self-controlled man should perform bathing, charity, and fire-oblation with the Vaishnava mantra there, and the worship of brahmins and of Vishnu.

Verse 23 (skanda.2.186.23)

तत्र सांवत्सरी यात्रा कर्त्तव्या सुप्रयत्नतः ऊर्जकृष्णनवम्यां च सर्वपापापनुत्तये

tatra sāṁvatsarī yātrā karttavyā suprayatnataḥ ūrjakṛṣṇanavamyāṁ ca sarvapāpāpanuttaye

The annual festival should be diligently observed there, on the ninth of the dark fortnight of Kartika, for the removal of all sin.

Verse 24 (skanda.2.186.24)

पुत्रवाञ्जायते वन्ध्यो यात्रां कृत्वा न संशयः नारीभिर्वा नरैर्वापि कर्त्तव्यं स्नानमादरात्

putravāñjāyate vandhyo yātrāṁ kṛtvā na saṁśayaḥ nārībhirvā narairvāpi karttavyaṁ snānamādarāt

Even a barren person becomes possessed of sons by performing this pilgrimage, without doubt; bathing should be performed reverently by women and men alike.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.186.25)

भुक्त्वा भोगान्समग्रांश्च विष्णुलोके स मोदते लक्ष्मीकामनया तत्र स्नातव्यं च विशेषतः

bhuktvā bhogānsamagrāṁśca viṣṇuloke sa modate lakṣmīkāmanayā tatra snātavyaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ

Having enjoyed the fullness of pleasures, he rejoices in the world of Vishnu; one should bathe there especially with a desire for Lakshmi's favor.

Verse 26 (skanda.2.186.26)

सर्वकाममवाप्नोति तत्र स्नानेन मानवः रुक्मिणीश्रीपतिप्रीत्यै दातव्यं च स्वशक्तितः

sarvakāmamavāpnoti tatra snānena mānavaḥ rukmiṇīśrīpatiprītyai dātavyaṁ ca svaśaktitaḥ

A man obtains all his desires by bathing there; charity should be given according to one's ability for the pleasure of Rukmini and her Lord.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.186.27)

कर्त्तव्या विधिवत्पूजा ब्राह्मणानां विशेषतः ध्येयो लक्ष्मीपतिस्तत्र शंखचक्रगदाधरः

karttavyā vidhivatpūjā brāhmaṇānāṁ viśeṣataḥ dhyeyo lakṣmīpatistatra śaṁkhacakragadādharaḥ

The worship of brahmins should especially be duly performed; the Lord of Lakshmi, bearing conch, discus and mace, should be meditated upon there,

Verse 28 (skanda.2.186.28)

पीतांबरधरः स्रग्वी नारदादिभिरीडितः तार्क्ष्यासनो मुकुटवान्महेन्द्रादिविभूषितः

pītāṁbaradharaḥ sragvī nāradādibhirīḍitaḥ tārkṣyāsano mukuṭavānmahendrādivibhūṣitaḥ

clad in yellow, garlanded, praised by Narada and others, seated upon Garuda, crowned, adorned by Mahendra and other gods,

Verse 29 (skanda.2.186.29)

सर्वकामफलावाप्त्यै वक्षोलक्षितकौस्तुभः अतसीकुसुमश्यामः कमलामललोचनः

sarvakāmaphalāvāptyai vakṣolakṣitakaustubhaḥ atasīkusumaśyāmaḥ kamalāmalalocanaḥ

for the attainment of the fruit of all desires, his chest marked with the Kaustubha gem, dark as the atasi flower, with lotus-pure eyes.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.186.30)

एवं कृते न संदेहः सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् इह लोके सुखं भुक्त्वा हरिलोके स मोदते

evaṁ kṛte na saṁdehaḥ sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt iha loke sukhaṁ bhuktvā hariloke sa modate

When this is done, without doubt one obtains all desires; having enjoyed happiness in this world, one rejoices in the world of Hari.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.186.31)

अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि तीर्थमन्यदघापहम् कलिकिल्विषसंहारकारकं प्रत्ययात्मकम्

ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi tīrthamanyadaghāpaham kalikilviṣasaṁhārakārakaṁ pratyayātmakam

Now I shall further tell of another sacred ford, a remover of sin, a destroyer of the sins of the Kali age, one that produces immediate conviction,

Verse 32 (skanda.2.186.32)

परं पवित्रमतुलं सर्वकामार्थसिद्धिदम् धनयक्षइतिख्यातं परं प्रत्ययकारकम्

paraṁ pavitramatulaṁ sarvakāmārthasiddhidam dhanayakṣaitikhyātaṁ paraṁ pratyayakārakam

supremely pure, incomparable, granting the fulfillment of all desires and aims, known as Dhana-yaksha, producing supreme conviction.

Verse 33 (skanda.2.186.33)

रुक्मिणीकुण्डवायव्यदिग्दले संस्मृतं शुभम् हरिश्चन्द्रस्य राजर्षेरासीत्तत्र धनं महत्

rukmiṇīkuṇḍavāyavyadigdale saṁsmṛtaṁ śubham hariścandrasya rājarṣerāsīttatra dhanaṁ mahat

It is remembered as auspicious, to the north-west of Rukmini-kunda; there lay the great wealth of the royal sage Harishchandra.

Verse 34 (skanda.2.186.34)

तस्य रक्षार्थमत्यर्थं रक्षितो यक्षउच्चकैः विश्वामित्रो मुनिः पूर्वं यदा चैव पराजयत्

tasya rakṣārthamatyarthaṁ rakṣito yakṣauccakaiḥ viśvāmitro muniḥ pūrvaṁ yadā caiva parājayat

For the sake of protecting it, it was diligently guarded by a great yaksha, from when the sage Vishvamitra had formerly defeated

Verse 35 (skanda.2.186.35)

हरिश्चंद्रं नरपतिं राज्यसूयकरं परम् राज्यं जग्राह सकलं चतुरंगबलान्वितम्

hariścaṁdraṁ narapatiṁ rājyasūyakaraṁ param rājyaṁ jagrāha sakalaṁ caturaṁgabalānvitam

King Harishchandra, the supreme performer of the Rajasuya sacrifice, and seized his entire kingdom together with its fourfold army.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.186.36)

तद्वशेऽदाच्च स मुनिर्धनं सकलमुत्तमम् तद्रक्षायै प्रयत्नेन यक्षं स्थापितवानसौ

tadvaśe’dācca sa munirdhanaṁ sakalamuttamam tadrakṣāyai prayatnena yakṣaṁ sthāpitavānasau

That sage placed all that excellent wealth under his own control, and, for its protection, diligently stationed a yaksha there,

Verse 37 (skanda.2.186.37)

प्रमंथुर इति ख्यातं प्रमोदानन्दमंदिरम् रक्षां विदधतस्तस्य बहुयत्नेन सर्वशः

pramaṁthura iti khyātaṁ pramodānandamaṁdiram rakṣāṁ vidadhatastasya bahuyatnena sarvaśaḥ

known as Pramanthura, an abode of joy and delight, who guarded it in every way with great effort.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.186.38)

तुतोष स मुनिर्द्धीमान्कदाचिद्विजितेन्द्रियः उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं प्रीत्या परमया युतः

tutoṣa sa munirddhīmānkadācidvijitendriyaḥ uvāca madhuraṁ vākyaṁ prītyā paramayā yutaḥ

That wise, self-controlled sage, once being pleased, spoke a gentle word, filled with the utmost affection.

Verse 39 (skanda.2.186.39)

विश्वामित्र उवाच वरं वरय धर्मज्ञ क्षिप्रमेव विमत्सरः भक्त्या परमया धीर संतुष्टोऽस्मि विशेषतः

viśvāmitra uvāca varaṁ varaya dharmajña kṣiprameva vimatsaraḥ bhaktyā paramayā dhīra saṁtuṣṭo’smi viśeṣataḥ

Vishvamitra said: Choose a boon quickly, O knower of righteousness, free from envy; O steadfast one, I am especially pleased by your supreme devotion.

Verse 40 (skanda.2.186.40)

यक्ष उवाच वरं प्रयच्छसि यदि विप्रवर्य मदीप्सितम् ममांगमतिदुर्गंधि शापाच्च नृपतेरभूत् सुगन्धयितुं ब्रह्मर्षे तत्प्रसीद मुनीश्वर

yakṣa uvāca varaṁ prayacchasi yadi vipravarya madīpsitam mamāṁgamatidurgaṁdhi śāpācca nṛpaterabhūt sugandhayituṁ brahmarṣe tatprasīda munīśvara

The yaksha said: O best of brahmins, if you grant me the boon I desire — my body became exceedingly foul-smelling due to the curse of a king; O brahmin-sage, O lord of sages, be gracious, so as to make it fragrant.

Verse 41 (skanda.2.186.41)

अगस्त्य उवाच एवमुक्ते तु यक्षेण मुनिर्ध्यानस्थलोचनः तं विविच्यानया भक्त्या अभिषेकं चकार सः

agastya uvāca evamukte tu yakṣeṇa munirdhyānasthalocanaḥ taṁ vivicyānayā bhaktyā abhiṣekaṁ cakāra saḥ

Agastya said: When the yaksha had spoken thus, the sage, his eyes fixed in meditation, having discerned the matter, performed a ritual bathing for him with this devotion,

Verse 42 (skanda.2.186.42)

तीर्थोदकेन विधिवत्कृत्वा संकल्पमादरात् ततः सोऽभूत्क्षणेनैव सुगन्धोत्तरविग्रहः

tīrthodakena vidhivatkṛtvā saṁkalpamādarāt tataḥ so’bhūtkṣaṇenaiva sugandhottaravigrahaḥ

duly, and with a reverent resolve, using the water of the sacred ford; then, in an instant, his body became supremely fragrant.

Verse 43 (skanda.2.186.43)

तथाभूतः स मधुरं प्रोवाच प्रांजलिस्ततः पुनः पुरः स्थितो धीमान्विनयावनतस्तदा

tathābhūtaḥ sa madhuraṁ provāca prāṁjalistataḥ punaḥ puraḥ sthito dhīmānvinayāvanatastadā

Having become so, he then spoke sweetly with joined palms, that wise one standing again before him, bowed in humility.

Verse 44 (skanda.2.186.44)

यक्ष उवाच त्वत्कृपाभिरहं धीर जातः सुरभिविग्रहः एतत्स्थानं यथा ख्यातिं याति सर्वज्ञ तत्कुरु

yakṣa uvāca tvatkṛpābhirahaṁ dhīra jātaḥ surabhivigrahaḥ etatsthānaṁ yathā khyātiṁ yāti sarvajña tatkuru

The yaksha said: O steadfast one, by your grace I have become of fragrant form; O omniscient one, do that by which this place shall attain renown.

Verse 45 (skanda.2.186.45)

त्वत्प्रसादेन विप्रर्षे तथा यत्नं विधेहि वै

tvatprasādena viprarṣe tathā yatnaṁ vidhehi vai

By your grace, O sage among brahmins, please make such an effort.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.186.46)

अगस्त्य उवाच एवमुक्तः क्षणं ध्यात्वा मुनिः स्तिमितलोचनः यक्षं प्रति प्रसन्नात्मा ह्युवाच श्लक्ष्णया गिरा

agastya uvāca evamuktaḥ kṣaṇaṁ dhyātvā muniḥ stimitalocanaḥ yakṣaṁ prati prasannātmā hyuvāca ślakṣṇayā girā

Agastya said: Thus addressed, the sage, having meditated a moment, his eyes steady, gracious of spirit, spoke to the yaksha in a gentle voice.

Verse 47 (skanda.2.186.47)

विश्वामित्र उवाच प्रसिद्धिमतुलां यक्ष एतत्स्थानं गमिष्यति धनयक्ष इति ख्यातिमेतत्तीर्थं गमिष्यति

viśvāmitra uvāca prasiddhimatulāṁ yakṣa etatsthānaṁ gamiṣyati dhanayakṣa iti khyātimetattīrthaṁ gamiṣyati

Vishvamitra said: O yaksha, this place shall attain incomparable renown; this ford shall attain fame as 'Dhana-yaksha',

Verse 48 (skanda.2.186.48)

सौंदर्य्यदं शरीरस्य परं प्रत्ययकारकम् यत्र स्नात्वा विधानेन दौर्गंध्यं त्यजति क्षणात् तत्र स्नानं प्रयत्नेन कर्त्तव्यं पुण्यकांक्षिभिः

sauṁdaryyadaṁ śarīrasya paraṁ pratyayakārakam yatra snātvā vidhānena daurgaṁdhyaṁ tyajati kṣaṇāt tatra snānaṁ prayatnena karttavyaṁ puṇyakāṁkṣibhiḥ

giving beauty to the body, producing supreme conviction — having duly bathed there, one instantly casts off foul odor; bathing should be diligently performed there by those desiring merit.

Verse 49 (skanda.2.186.49)

दानं श्रद्धास्वशक्तिभ्यां लक्ष्मीपूजा विशेषतः तत्र स्नानेन दानेन लक्ष्मीप्रीत्यै विशेषतः

dānaṁ śraddhāsvaśaktibhyāṁ lakṣmīpūjā viśeṣataḥ tatra snānena dānena lakṣmīprītyai viśeṣataḥ

Charity according to faith and one's ability, and especially the worship of Lakshmi; bathing and charity there should be performed especially for Lakshmi's pleasure,

Verse 50 (skanda.2.186.50)

पूजया तु निधीनां च नवानामपि सुव्रत इह लोके सुखं भुक्त्वा परलोके स मोदते

pūjayā tu nidhīnāṁ ca navānāmapi suvrata iha loke sukhaṁ bhuktvā paraloke sa modate

and, O you of good vows, by the worship of the nine treasures as well; having enjoyed happiness in this world, one rejoices in the world beyond.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.186.51)

महापद्मस्तथा पद्मः शंखो मकरकच्छपौ मुकुन्दकुंदनीलाश्च खर्वश्च निधयो नव

mahāpadmastathā padmaḥ śaṁkho makarakacchapau mukundakuṁdanīlāśca kharvaśca nidhayo nava

Mahapadma, Padma, Shankha, Makara, Kachchhapa, Mukunda, Kunda, Nila, and Kharva — these are the nine treasures.

Verse 52 (skanda.2.186.52)

एतेषामपि कुण्डेऽत्र संनिधिर्भविताऽनघ एतेषां तु विशेषेण पूजा बहुफलप्रदा

eteṣāmapi kuṇḍe’tra saṁnidhirbhavitā’nagha eteṣāṁ tu viśeṣeṇa pūjā bahuphalapradā

O sinless one, the presence of these too shall abide in this tank; and worship of these especially bestows abundant fruit.

Verse 53 (skanda.2.186.53)

जलमध्ये प्रकर्त्तव्यं निधिलक्ष्मीप्रपूजनम्

jalamadhye prakarttavyaṁ nidhilakṣmīprapūjanam

The worship of the treasures and of Lakshmi should be performed in the midst of the water.

Verse 54 (skanda.2.186.54)

अन्नं बहुविधं देयं वासांसि विविधानि च

annaṁ bahuvidhaṁ deyaṁ vāsāṁsi vividhāni ca

Food of many kinds should be given, and various garments.

Verse 55 (skanda.2.186.55)

सुवर्णादि यथाशक्त्या वित्तशाठ्यं विवर्जयेत् गुप्तं दानं प्रयत्नेन कर्त्तव्यं सुप्रयत्नतः

suvarṇādi yathāśaktyā vittaśāṭhyaṁ vivarjayet guptaṁ dānaṁ prayatnena karttavyaṁ suprayatnataḥ

Gold and the like should be given according to one's ability; one should avoid miserliness with wealth; secret charity should be diligently and most carefully performed.

Verse 56 (skanda.2.186.56)

फलानि च सुवर्णानि देयानि च विशेषतः

phalāni ca suvarṇāni deyāni ca viśeṣataḥ

Fruits and gold should especially be given.

Verse 57 (skanda.2.186.57)

कृष्णपक्षे चतुर्दश्यां स्नानं बहुफलप्रदम् श्रद्धया परया युक्तैः कर्त्तव्यं श्रद्धयाधिकम्

kṛṣṇapakṣe caturdaśyāṁ snānaṁ bahuphalapradam śraddhayā parayā yuktaiḥ karttavyaṁ śraddhayādhikam

On the fourteenth of the dark fortnight, bathing bestows abundant fruit; it should be performed by those endowed with supreme faith, with even greater faith.

Verse 58 (skanda.2.186.58)

माघे कृष्णचतुर्दश्यां यात्रा सांवत्सरी भवेत् तत्र स्नानं पितॄणान्तु तर्पणं च विशेषतः

māghe kṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṁ yātrā sāṁvatsarī bhavet tatra snānaṁ pitṝṇāntu tarpaṇaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ

On the fourteenth of the dark fortnight of Magha, the annual festival takes place; bathing there, and especially the offering of libations to the ancestors,

आब्रह्मस्तम्बपर्यंतं जगत्तृप्यत्विति ब्रुवन् अपसव्येन विधिवत्तर्प्पयेदंजलित्रयम्

ābrahmastambaparyaṁtaṁ jagattṛpyatviti bruvan apasavyena vidhivattarppayedaṁjalitrayam

saying, 'let the whole universe, from Brahma down to a blade of grass, be satisfied,' one should duly offer, with the sacred thread over the right shoulder, three handfuls of water.

Verse 60 (skanda.2.186.60)

एवं कुर्वन्नरो यक्ष न मुह्यति कदाचन अत्र स्नातो दिवं याति अत्र स्नातः सुखी भवेत्

evaṁ kurvannaro yakṣa na muhyati kadācana atra snāto divaṁ yāti atra snātaḥ sukhī bhavet

A man who does thus, O yaksha, is never deluded; one who bathes here goes to heaven; one who bathes here becomes happy.

Verse 61 (skanda.2.186.61)

अत्र स्नातेन ते यक्ष कर्त्तव्यं पूजनं पुरः त्वत्पूजनेन विधिवन्नृणां पापक्षयो भवेत्

atra snātena te yakṣa karttavyaṁ pūjanaṁ puraḥ tvatpūjanena vidhivannṛṇāṁ pāpakṣayo bhavet

Whoever bathes here, O yaksha, should perform your worship first; by duly worshipping you, the destruction of men's sins occurs.

Verse 62 (skanda.2.186.62)

नमः प्रमथराजेति पूजामन्त्र उदाहृतः तीर्थमध्ये प्रकर्त्तव्यं पूजनं श्रवणादिकम्

namaḥ pramatharājeti pūjāmantra udāhṛtaḥ tīrthamadhye prakarttavyaṁ pūjanaṁ śravaṇādikam

'Salutation to the king of the Pramathas' — this is declared as the worship-mantra; worship, including the hearing of this tale, should be performed in the midst of the sacred ford,

Verse 63 (skanda.2.186.63)

निधिलक्ष्म्यो तथा यक्ष तव पूजा विशेषतः एवं यः कुरुते धीरः सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्

nidhilakṣmyo tathā yakṣa tava pūjā viśeṣataḥ evaṁ yaḥ kurute dhīraḥ sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt

and likewise the worship of the treasure-goddesses of Lakshmi, and especially of you, O yaksha; whoever, being steadfast, does thus, obtains all his desires.

Verse 64 (skanda.2.186.64)

धनार्थी धनमाप्नोति पुत्रार्थी पुत्रमाप्नुयात् मोक्षार्थी मोक्षमाप्नोति तत्किं न यदिहाप्यते

dhanārthī dhanamāpnoti putrārthī putramāpnuyāt mokṣārthī mokṣamāpnoti tatkiṁ na yadihāpyate

One desiring wealth obtains wealth, one desiring sons obtains sons, one desiring liberation obtains liberation — what is there that is not obtained here?

Verse 65 (skanda.2.186.65)

यस्तु मोहान्नरो यक्ष स्नानं न कुरुते किल तस्य सांवत्सरं पुण्यं त्वं ग्रहीष्यसि सर्वशः

yastu mohānnaro yakṣa snānaṁ na kurute kila tasya sāṁvatsaraṁ puṇyaṁ tvaṁ grahīṣyasi sarvaśaḥ

But whatever man, O yaksha, through delusion, does not perform this bathing — his entire year's merit you shall indeed seize.

Verse 66 (skanda.2.186.66)

इति दत्त्वा वरांस्तस्मै विश्वामित्रो मुनीश्वरः अन्तर्दधे मुनिवरस्तदा स च तपोनिधिः

iti dattvā varāṁstasmai viśvāmitro munīśvaraḥ antardadhe munivarastadā sa ca taponidhiḥ

Having thus given boons to him, that lord of sages, that treasury of austerity, Vishvamitra, then vanished.

Verse 67 (skanda.2.186.67)

तदाप्रभृति तत्स्थानं परमां ख्यातिमाययौ तस्य तीर्थस्य सकला भूमिः स्वर्णविनिर्मिता

tadāprabhṛti tatsthānaṁ paramāṁ khyātimāyayau tasya tīrthasya sakalā bhūmiḥ svarṇavinirmitā

From then on, that place attained supreme renown; the entire ground of that sacred ford is made of gold,

Verse 68 (skanda.2.186.68)

दिव्यरत्नौघखचिता समंतादुपशोभिता एवं यः कुरुते विद्वन्स याति परमां गतिम्

divyaratnaughakhacitā samaṁtādupaśobhitā evaṁ yaḥ kurute vidvansa yāti paramāṁ gatim

studded with masses of divine gems, beautified on every side; whoever, being wise, does thus, attains the highest goal.

Verse 69 (skanda.2.186.69)

धनयक्षादुत्तरस्मिन्दिग्भागे संस्थितं द्विज वसिष्ठकुण्डं विख्यातं सर्वपापापहं सदा

dhanayakṣāduttarasmindigbhāge saṁsthitaṁ dvija vasiṣṭhakuṇḍaṁ vikhyātaṁ sarvapāpāpahaṁ sadā

O brahmin, situated to the north of Dhana-yaksha is the renowned Vasishtha-kunda, ever a remover of all sin.

Verse 70 (skanda.2.186.70)

वसिष्ठस्य सदा तत्र निवासः सुतपोनिधेः अरुन्धती सदा यस्य वर्तते निर्मलव्रता

vasiṣṭhasya sadā tatra nivāsaḥ sutaponidheḥ arundhatī sadā yasya vartate nirmalavratā

Vasishtha, that excellent treasury of austerity, ever dwells there, together with Arundhati, ever of stainless vow.

Verse 71 (skanda.2.186.71)

अत्र स्नानं विशेषेण श्राद्धपूर्वमतंद्रितः यः कुर्यात्प्रयतो धीमांस्तस्य पुण्यमनुत्तमम्

atra snānaṁ viśeṣeṇa śrāddhapūrvamataṁdritaḥ yaḥ kuryātprayato dhīmāṁstasya puṇyamanuttamam

Whatever self-controlled, wise man, untiring, especially performs bathing here preceded by shraddha — his merit is unsurpassed.

Verse 72 (skanda.2.186.72)

वामदेवस्य तत्रैव संनिधिर्वर्ततेऽनघ वशिष्ठवामदेवौ तु पूजनीयौ प्रयत्नतः

vāmadevasya tatraiva saṁnidhirvartate’nagha vaśiṣṭhavāmadevau tu pūjanīyau prayatnataḥ

O sinless one, the presence of Vamadeva abides there as well; both Vasishtha and Vamadeva should be diligently worshipped,

Verse 73 (skanda.2.186.73)

पतिव्रता पूजनीयाऽरुन्धती च विशेषतः स्नातव्यं विधिना सम्यग्दातव्यं च स्वशक्तितः

pativratā pūjanīyā’rundhatī ca viśeṣataḥ snātavyaṁ vidhinā samyagdātavyaṁ ca svaśaktitaḥ

and especially the devoted wife Arundhati should be worshipped; one should duly and properly bathe, and give charity according to one's ability.

Verse 74 (skanda.2.186.74)

सर्वकामफलप्राप्तिर्जायते नात्र संशयः अत्र यः कुरुते स्नानं स वशिष्ठसमो भवेत्

sarvakāmaphalaprāptirjāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ atra yaḥ kurute snānaṁ sa vaśiṣṭhasamo bhavet

The attainment of the fruit of all desires occurs — there is no doubt of this; whoever bathes here becomes equal to Vasishtha.

Verse 75 (skanda.2.186.75)

भाद्रे मासि सिते पक्षे पंचम्यां नियतव्रतः तस्य सांवत्सरी यात्रा कर्त्तव्या विधिपूर्विका

bhādre māsi site pakṣe paṁcamyāṁ niyatavrataḥ tasya sāṁvatsarī yātrā karttavyā vidhipūrvikā

One true to his vow should observe the annual festival, duly performed, on the fifth of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada.

Verse 76 (skanda.2.186.76)

विष्णुपूजा प्रयत्नेन कर्तव्या श्रद्धयात्र वै सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा विष्णुलोके महीयते

viṣṇupūjā prayatnena kartavyā śraddhayātra vai sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā viṣṇuloke mahīyate

The worship of Vishnu should diligently be performed here with faith; thus one's soul purified of all sin, one is exalted in the world of Vishnu.

Verse 77 (skanda.2.186.77)

वसिष्ठकुण्डाद्विप्रेंद्र प्रत्यग्दिग्दलमाश्रितम् विख्यातं सागरं कुण्डं सर्वकामार्थसिद्धिदम् यत्र स्नानेन दानेन सर्वकामानवाप्नुयात्

vasiṣṭhakuṇḍādvipreṁdra pratyagdigdalamāśritam vikhyātaṁ sāgaraṁ kuṇḍaṁ sarvakāmārthasiddhidam yatra snānena dānena sarvakāmānavāpnuyāt

O chief of brahmins, to the west of Vasishtha-kunda is situated the renowned Sagara-kunda, granting the fulfillment of all desires and aims, by bathing and giving charity at which one obtains all desires.

Verse 78 (skanda.2.186.78)

पौर्णमास्यां समुद्रस्य स्नानाद्यत्पुण्यमाप्नुयात् तत्पुण्यं पर्वणि स्नातो नरश्चाक्षयमाप्नुयात्

paurṇamāsyāṁ samudrasya snānādyatpuṇyamāpnuyāt tatpuṇyaṁ parvaṇi snāto naraścākṣayamāpnuyāt

Whatever merit is obtained by bathing in the ocean on the full-moon day — that same imperishable merit a man obtains by bathing here on that festival day.

Verse 79 (skanda.2.186.79)

तस्मादत्र विधानेन स्नातव्यं पुत्रकांक्षया आश्विने पौर्णमास्यां तु विशेषात्स्नानमाचरेत्

tasmādatra vidhānena snātavyaṁ putrakāṁkṣayā āśvine paurṇamāsyāṁ tu viśeṣātsnānamācaret

Therefore one should duly bathe here desiring sons; especially on the full moon of Ashvina, one should perform the bathing.

Verse 80 (skanda.2.186.80)

एवं कुर्वन्नरो विद्वान्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते अत्र स्नात्वा नरो दत्त्वा यथाशक्त्या दिवं व्रजेत्

evaṁ kurvannaro vidvānsarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate atra snātvā naro dattvā yathāśaktyā divaṁ vrajet

A wise man who does thus is freed from all sins; a man, having bathed here and given charity according to his ability, goes to heaven.

Verse 81 (skanda.2.186.81)

सागरान्नैर्ऋते भागे योगिनीकुण्डमुत्तमम् यत्राऽऽसते चतुःषष्टियोगिन्यो जलसंस्थिताः

sāgarānnairṛte bhāge yoginīkuṇḍamuttamam yatrā’’sate catuḥṣaṣṭiyoginyo jalasaṁsthitāḥ

To the south-west of Sagara-kunda is the excellent Yogini-kunda, where the sixty-four Yoginis dwell, abiding in the water,

Verse 82 (skanda.2.186.82)

सर्वार्थसिद्धिदाः पुंसां स्त्रीणां चैव विशेषतः परसिद्धिप्रदाः सर्वाः सर्वकामफलप्रदाः

sarvārthasiddhidāḥ puṁsāṁ strīṇāṁ caiva viśeṣataḥ parasiddhipradāḥ sarvāḥ sarvakāmaphalapradāḥ

granting the fulfillment of all aims for men, and especially for women; all of them bestowing supreme accomplishment, granting the fruit of all desires.

Verse 83 (skanda.2.186.83)

आश्विने शुक्लपक्षस्य अष्टम्यां च विशेषतः स्नातव्यं च प्रयत्नेन योगिनीप्रीतये नृभिः

āśvine śuklapakṣasya aṣṭamyāṁ ca viśeṣataḥ snātavyaṁ ca prayatnena yoginīprītaye nṛbhiḥ

Especially on the eighth of the bright fortnight of Ashvina, men should diligently bathe for the pleasure of the Yoginis.

Verse 84 (skanda.2.186.84)

अत्र स्नानं तथा दानं सर्वं सफलतां व्रजेत् यक्षिणीप्रभृतयः सिद्धा भवंत्यत्र न संशयः

atra snānaṁ tathā dānaṁ sarvaṁ saphalatāṁ vrajet yakṣiṇīprabhṛtayaḥ siddhā bhavaṁtyatra na saṁśayaḥ

Bathing and charity here all become fruitful; the Yakshinis and other such beings become propitiated here — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 85 (skanda.2.186.85)

योगिनीकुंडतः पूर्वमुर्वशीकुण्डमुत्तमम् यत्र स्नातो नरो विद्वन्नुर्वशीं दिवि संश्रयेत्

yoginīkuṁḍataḥ pūrvamurvaśīkuṇḍamuttamam yatra snāto naro vidvannurvaśīṁ divi saṁśrayet

To the east of Yogini-kunda is the excellent Urvashi-kunda, bathing at which, O learned one, a man attains the company of Urvashi in heaven.

Verse 86 (skanda.2.186.86)

पुरा किल मुनिर्धीरो रैभ्यो नाम तपोधनः चचार हिमवत्पार्श्वे निराहारो जितेन्द्रियः

purā kila munirdhīro raibhyo nāma tapodhanaḥ cacāra himavatpārśve nirāhāro jitendriyaḥ

Formerly, a resolute sage named Raibhya, rich in austerity, practiced austerity, taking no food, his senses subdued, on the slopes of the Himalaya.

Verse 87 (skanda.2.186.87)

तत्तपो विपुलं दृष्ट्वा भीतः सुरपतिस्ततः उर्वशीं प्रेषयामास तपोविघ्नाय चादरात्

tattapo vipulaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhītaḥ surapatistataḥ urvaśīṁ preṣayāmāsa tapovighnāya cādarāt

Seeing that vast austerity, the lord of the gods, afraid, then respectfully sent Urvashi to disturb his austerity.

Verse 88 (skanda.2.186.88)

ततः सा प्रेषिता तेनाजगाम गजगामिनी उवास हिमवत्पार्श्वे रैभ्याश्रममनुत्तमम्

tataḥ sā preṣitā tenājagāma gajagāminī uvāsa himavatpārśve raibhyāśramamanuttamam

Then, sent by him, she of the elephant-like gait came and dwelt on the slopes of the Himalaya, at Raibhya's excellent hermitage,

वनफुल्ललताकुञ्जे मञ्जुकूजद्विहंगमे किन्नरीकेलिसंगीतस्तिमितांगकुरंगके

vanaphullalatākuñje mañjukūjadvihaṁgame kinnarīkelisaṁgītastimitāṁgakuraṁgake

in a bower of blossoming forest creepers, where birds cooed sweetly, where deer stood motionless, entranced by the singing and sport of Kinnari women,

Verse 90 (skanda.2.186.90)

पुन्नागकेशराशोकच्छिन्नकिजल्कपिंजरे कल्पिते कांचनगिरौ द्वितीय इव वेधसा

punnāgakeśarāśokacchinnakijalkapiṁjare kalpite kāṁcanagirau dvitīya iva vedhasā

tawny with the scattered pollen of punnaga, keshara and ashoka flowers, set as if by the Creator upon a second golden mountain.

Verse 91 (skanda.2.186.91)

सा बभौ कांतिसर्वस्वकोशः कुसुमधन्वनः उर्वश्यनल्पसामान्यलावण्यामृतवाहिनी

sā babhau kāṁtisarvasvakośaḥ kusumadhanvanaḥ urvaśyanalpasāmānyalāvaṇyāmṛtavāhinī

She, Urvashi, shone as the treasury of all the loveliness of the God of Love, bearing forth a stream of nectar-like beauty, no ordinary thing,

अंगप्रभासुवर्णेन सितमौक्तिकशोभिता तारुण्यरुचिरत्वेन तारुण्येन विभूषिता

aṁgaprabhāsuvarṇena sitamauktikaśobhitā tāruṇyaruciratvena tāruṇyena vibhūṣitā

beautified by the golden radiance of her limbs and by white pearls, adorned with the charming loveliness of youth,

विलोमलोचनापांगतरंगधवलत्विषा नवपल्लवसच्छायं कल्पयन्ती निजाधरम्

vilomalocanāpāṁgataraṁgadhavalatviṣā navapallavasacchāyaṁ kalpayantī nijādharam

her sidelong glances rippling with a wave of bright splendor, her lower lip fashioned like the fresh sheen of a new leaf-shoot,

कर्णोपलम्बिसंघुष्यद्भृङ्गाढ्यचूतमञ्जरी सुधागर्भसमुद्भूता पारिजातलता यथा

karṇopalambisaṁghuṣyadbhṛṅgāḍhyacūtamañjarī sudhāgarbhasamudbhūtā pārijātalatā yathā

with a mango-blossom cluster, rich with humming bees, hanging by her ear, like a Parijata creeper sprung from the womb of nectar,

तनुमध्या पृथुश्रोणिर्वर्णोद्भिन्नपयोधरा निःशाणितशरस्येव शक्तिः कुसुमधन्वनः

tanumadhyā pṛthuśroṇirvarṇodbhinnapayodharā niḥśāṇitaśarasyeva śaktiḥ kusumadhanvanaḥ

slender-waisted, broad-hipped, her breasts distinguished by their hue, like the power of the God of Love's unsharpened arrow,

अपश्यदाश्रमे तस्मिन्मुनिरायतलोचनाम् नयनानलदाहेन विदग्धेन मनोभुवा

apaśyadāśrame tasminmunirāyatalocanām nayanānaladāhena vidagdhena manobhuvā

the sage saw her, wide-eyed, in that hermitage; his mind, scorched by the fire of desire entering through the eyes,

त्रिनेत्रवंचनायैव कल्पितां ललनातनुम् तामाश्रमलतापुष्पकांचीरचितकुण्डलाम्

trinetravaṁcanāyaiva kalpitāṁ lalanātanum tāmāśramalatāpuṣpakāṁcīracitakuṇḍalām

recognized her as a woman's form fashioned solely to deceive even the three-eyed Shiva; she, adorned with earrings and a girdle crafted from the flowers of the hermitage's creepers,

विलोक्य तां विशालाक्षीं मुनिर्व्याकुलितेन्द्रियः बभूव रोषसंतप्तः शशाप च बहु ज्वलन्

vilokya tāṁ viśālākṣīṁ munirvyākulitendriyaḥ babhūva roṣasaṁtaptaḥ śaśāpa ca bahu jvalan

beholding that wide-eyed woman, the sage, his senses agitated, became inflamed with anger, and, burning intensely, cursed her.

Verse 99 (skanda.2.186.99)

रैभ्य उवाच कुरूपतां व्रज क्षिप्रं या त्वं सौंदर्यगर्विता समागता तपोविघ्नहेतवे मम सन्निधौ

raibhya uvāca kurūpatāṁ vraja kṣipraṁ yā tvaṁ sauṁdaryagarvitā samāgatā tapovighnahetave mama sannidhau

Raibhya said: You, who, proud of your beauty, have come into my presence for the purpose of disturbing my austerity — go quickly to ugliness!

Verse 100 (skanda.2.186.100)

अगस्त्य उवाच इति शप्ता रुषा तेन मुनिना सा शुभेक्षणा उवाच वनिता भूत्वा प्रांजलिर्मुनिमादरात्

agastya uvāca iti śaptā ruṣā tena muninā sā śubhekṣaṇā uvāca vanitā bhūtvā prāṁjalirmunimādarāt

Agastya said: Thus cursed in anger by that sage, that fair-eyed one, having become an ordinary woman, spoke to the sage reverently, with joined palms.

उर्वश्युवाच भगवन्मे प्रसीद त्वं पराधीना यतस्त्वहम् त्वच्छापस्य कथं मुक्तिर्भविता नियतव्रत

urvaśyuvāca bhagavanme prasīda tvaṁ parādhīnā yatastvaham tvacchāpasya kathaṁ muktirbhavitā niyatavrata

Urvashi said: Lord, be gracious to me, for I am acting under another's control; O you of strict vow, how shall release from your curse come about?

रैभ्य उवाच अयोध्यायामस्ति तीर्थं पावनं परमं महत् तत्र स्नानं कुरुष्वाद्य सौंदर्यं परमाप्नुहि

raibhya uvāca ayodhyāyāmasti tīrthaṁ pāvanaṁ paramaṁ mahat tatra snānaṁ kuruṣvādya sauṁdaryaṁ paramāpnuhi

Raibhya said: There is a sacred ford in Ayodhya, most purifying and great; bathe there today, and regain supreme beauty.

Verse 103 (skanda.2.186.103)

त्वन्नाम्नैव च विख्यातिं तोयं यास्यति तद्ध्रुवम्

tvannāmnaiva ca vikhyātiṁ toyaṁ yāsyati taddhruvam

And that water shall surely attain renown under your very name.

Verse 104 (skanda.2.186.104)

अगस्त्य उवाच एवं सा विप्रवचसा विदधे सर्वमादरात् सुन्दरी साऽभवत्क्षिप्रं तत्स्थानं ख्यातिमाययौ

agastya uvāca evaṁ sā vipravacasā vidadhe sarvamādarāt sundarī sā’bhavatkṣipraṁ tatsthānaṁ khyātimāyayau

Agastya said: Thus, at the brahmin's word, she reverently did everything as instructed; she quickly became beautiful again, and that place attained renown.

Verse 105 (skanda.2.186.105)

अत्र स्नानं मुनिश्रेष्ठ यः कुर्याद्विधिवज्जनः सौंदर्यं परमं तस्य भवेत्तत्र न संशयः

atra snānaṁ muniśreṣṭha yaḥ kuryādvidhivajjanaḥ sauṁdaryaṁ paramaṁ tasya bhavettatra na saṁśayaḥ

O best of sages, whatever person duly bathes here attains supreme beauty — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 106 (skanda.2.186.106)

भाद्रे शुक्लतृतीयायां यात्रा सांवत्सरी भवेत् विष्णुरत्र जनैः पूज्यः सर्वकामार्थसिद्धये

bhādre śuklatṛtīyāyāṁ yātrā sāṁvatsarī bhavet viṣṇuratra janaiḥ pūjyaḥ sarvakāmārthasiddhaye

On the third of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, the annual festival takes place; Vishnu should be worshipped here by people for the fulfillment of all desires and aims.

Verse 107 (skanda.2.186.107)

एवं कुर्वन्नरो विद्वान्विष्णुलोके वसेत्सदा नरो वा यदि वा नारी सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्

evaṁ kurvannaro vidvānviṣṇuloke vasetsadā naro vā yadi vā nārī sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt

A wise man who does thus dwells forever in the world of Vishnu; whether man or woman, one obtains all desires.

Verse 108 (skanda.2.186.108)

घोषार्ककुंडं परममुर्वशीकुंडदक्षिणे वर्तते मुनिशार्दूल सर्वपापापहं सदा

ghoṣārkakuṁḍaṁ paramamurvaśīkuṁḍadakṣiṇe vartate muniśārdūla sarvapāpāpahaṁ sadā

O tiger among sages, to the south of Urvashi-kunda is the supreme Ghoshaarka-kunda, ever a remover of all sin,

Verse 109 (skanda.2.186.109)

यत्र स्नानेन दानेन सूर्यलोके महीयते एतत्तीर्थस्य सदृशं नापरं विद्यते क्वचित्

yatra snānena dānena sūryaloke mahīyate etattīrthasya sadṛśaṁ nāparaṁ vidyate kvacit

by bathing and giving charity at which one is exalted in the world of the Sun; there exists nowhere another ford equal to this one.

Verse 110 (skanda.2.186.110)

व्रणी कुष्ठी दरिद्री वा दुःखाक्रांतोऽपि यो नरः करोति विधिवत्स्नानं सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्

vraṇī kuṣṭhī daridrī vā duḥkhākrāṁto’pi yo naraḥ karoti vidhivatsnānaṁ sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt

Whatever man, whether wounded, leprous, poor, or afflicted with sorrow, duly performs the bathing here obtains all his desires.

Verse 111 (skanda.2.186.111)

रविवारे विशेषेण कर्त्तव्यं स्नानमादरात् भाद्रे मासि तथा माघे शुक्लषष्ठ्यां प्रयत्नतः

ravivāre viśeṣeṇa karttavyaṁ snānamādarāt bhādre māsi tathā māghe śuklaṣaṣṭhyāṁ prayatnataḥ

Especially on Sunday, bathing should be reverently performed; likewise diligently in the month of Bhadrapada and in Magha, on the sixth of the bright fortnight.

Verse 112 (skanda.2.186.112)

कर्त्तव्यं विधिवत्स्नानं सूर्यलोकाभिकांक्षया पौषे मासि तथा स्नानं सूर्यवारे विशेषतः

karttavyaṁ vidhivatsnānaṁ sūryalokābhikāṁkṣayā pauṣe māsi tathā snānaṁ sūryavāre viśeṣataḥ

Bathing should be duly performed with the desire for the world of the Sun; likewise in the month of Pausha, especially on Sunday,

सप्तम्यां रवियुक्तायां स्नानं बहुफलप्रदम् घोषाभिधोऽभवत्पूर्वं सूर्यवंशे नरेश्वरः

saptamyāṁ raviyuktāyāṁ snānaṁ bahuphalapradam ghoṣābhidho’bhavatpūrvaṁ sūryavaṁśe nareśvaraḥ

and on the seventh combined with Sunday, bathing bestows abundant fruit. Formerly, in the solar dynasty, there was a king named Ghosha,

समुद्रमेखलामेकः पृथिवीं समपालयत् यस्य कीर्त्या प्रकाशंते त्रिलोकीमंडलानि वै

samudramekhalāmekaḥ pṛthivīṁ samapālayat yasya kīrtyā prakāśaṁte trilokīmaṁḍalāni vai

who alone ruled the earth girdled by the ocean, by whose fame the spheres of the three worlds shone,

यः प्रतापात्स्फुरन्भाति प्रभाकर इवापरः प्रचंडतरदोर्दंडखंडितारातिमंडलः

yaḥ pratāpātsphuranbhāti prabhākara ivāparaḥ pracaṁḍataradordaṁḍakhaṁḍitārātimaṁḍalaḥ

who blazed and shone with his majesty like another sun, who shattered the ranks of his foes with his most fierce arm,

स कदाचित्प्रजापालो मंत्त्रिविन्यस्तभूतलः बभ्राम मृगयासक्तो वनेऽतिगहनद्रुमे

sa kadācitprajāpālo maṁttrivinyastabhūtalaḥ babhrāma mṛgayāsakto vane’tigahanadrume

that protector of his subjects, having entrusted the earth to his ministers, once wandered, devoted to hunting, in a forest very dense with trees.

स राजा पूर्वजन्मोत्थपापैरशुभसूचकैः कृमिव्याप्तकरांभोजः सुन्दरोपि गतस्मयः

sa rājā pūrvajanmotthapāpairaśubhasūcakaiḥ kṛmivyāptakarāṁbhojaḥ sundaropi gatasmayaḥ

That king, by sins arisen from a former birth, portents of ill fortune, his lotus-hand infested with worms, though handsome, lost his pride,

मृगयायामभूदेकः कदाचित्पर्यटन्वने वराहसिंहहरिणान्निघ्नन्गच्छन्नितस्ततः

mṛgayāyāmabhūdekaḥ kadācitparyaṭanvane varāhasiṁhahariṇānnighnangacchannitastataḥ

and, on that hunt, alone, wandering here and there in the forest, slaying boars, lions and deer,

तृषाक्रान्तो म्लानतनुः सरोऽपश्यत्पुरो नृपः ददर्श तत्र च मुनीन्स्नानसंध्यादितत्परान्

tṛṣākrānto mlānatanuḥ saro’paśyatpuro nṛpaḥ dadarśa tatra ca munīnsnānasaṁdhyāditatparān

overcome with thirst, his body wearied, the king saw a lake before him, and there beheld sages engaged in bathing, evening worship, and the like.

ततो विधिवदाचम्य स्नानं चक्रे नरेश्वरः ततो दिव्यशरीरोऽभूदानंदामलमानसः

tato vidhivadācamya snānaṁ cakre nareśvaraḥ tato divyaśarīro’bhūdānaṁdāmalamānasaḥ

Then, having duly sipped water, the king performed his ablutions; thereupon his body became divine, and his mind became pure with joy.

मुनिभिस्तीर्थमाज्ञाय चक्रे सूर्य्यस्तुतिं प्रियाम्

munibhistīrthamājñāya cakre sūryyastutiṁ priyām

Having learned from the sages the nature of the sacred ford, he composed this beloved hymn of praise to Surya.

राजोवाच भगवन्देवदेवेश नमस्तुभ्यं चिदात्मने नमः सवित्रे सूर्याय जगदानंददायिने

rājovāca bhagavandevadeveśa namastubhyaṁ cidātmane namaḥ savitre sūryāya jagadānaṁdadāyine

The king said: Lord, god of the gods of gods, salutation to you, of the nature of pure consciousness; salutation to Savitri, to Surya, the giver of joy to the universe,

प्रभागेहाय देवाय त्रयीभूताय ते नमः विवस्वते नमस्तुभ्यं योगज्ञाय सदात्मने

prabhāgehāya devāya trayībhūtāya te namaḥ vivasvate namastubhyaṁ yogajñāya sadātmane

to the god whose abode is radiance, who is of the nature of the threefold Veda, salutation to you; salutation to Vivasvat, knower of yoga, of eternal self,

पराय परमेशाय त्रिलोकीतिमिरच्छिदे अचिन्त्याय सदा तुभ्यं नमो भास्करतेजसे

to the Supreme, the Supreme Lord, the dispeller of the darkness of the three worlds; to the inconceivable one, ever salutation to you, of the splendor of the sun,

ever salutation to the lover of yoga, to yoga itself, to the knower of yoga; to the syllable Om, of the form of the sacred exclamation vashat, of the form of knowledge,

salutation to the sacrifice, to the one measured by sacrifice, to the oblation, to the officiating priest; to the destroyer of disease, of true form, the giver of joy to the lotus,

अतिसौम्यातितीक्ष्णाय सुराणां पतये नमः सत्राशाय नमस्तुभ्यं भक्तत्राय प्रियात्मने

atisaumyātitīkṣṇāya surāṇāṁ pataye namaḥ satrāśāya namastubhyaṁ bhaktatrāya priyātmane

salutation to the most gentle and yet most fierce one, the lord of the gods; salutation to you, refuge in sacrifice, protector of devotees, of beloved nature,

प्रकाशकाय सततं लोकानां हितकारिणे प्रसीद प्रणतायाद्य मह्यं भक्तिकृते स्वयम्

prakāśakāya satataṁ lokānāṁ hitakāriṇe prasīda praṇatāyādya mahyaṁ bhaktikṛte svayam

to the ever-illuminating one, the benefactor of the worlds — be gracious today to me, who am bowed down, who myself perform devotion to you.

Verse 129 (skanda.2.186.129)

अगस्त्य उवाच इत्येवं ब्रुवतस्तस्य स प्रसन्नो रविः स्वयम् आविर्बभूव सहसा भक्तस्य प्रियकाम्यया उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं प्रश्रयानतमूर्द्धजम्

agastya uvāca ityevaṁ bruvatastasya sa prasanno raviḥ svayam āvirbabhūva sahasā bhaktasya priyakāmyayā uvāca madhuraṁ vākyaṁ praśrayānatamūrddhajam

Agastya said: While he was speaking thus, the Sun himself, pleased, suddenly became manifest, out of the wish to favor his devotee, and spoke a gentle word to him whose head was bowed in humility.

Verse 130 (skanda.2.186.130)

रविरुवाच वरं वरय राजेंद्र प्रसन्नोऽस्मि तवाग्रतः ददामि तद्वरं तेऽद्य यत्त्वया मनसेप्सितम्

raviruvāca varaṁ varaya rājeṁdra prasanno’smi tavāgrataḥ dadāmi tadvaraṁ te’dya yattvayā manasepsitam

Ravi said: Choose a boon, O chief of kings; I am pleased, standing before you; I give you today whatever boon is desired in your mind.

Verse 131 (skanda.2.186.131)

राजोवाच भगवन्भास्करानंत प्रयच्छसि वरं यदि मन्नाम्ना कृतमूर्त्तिस्ते तिष्ठत्वत्र सदा विभो

rājovāca bhagavanbhāskarānaṁta prayacchasi varaṁ yadi mannāmnā kṛtamūrttiste tiṣṭhatvatra sadā vibho

The king said: Lord, O boundless Bhaskara, if you grant a boon, then, O mighty one, let your image, made under my name, stand here forever.

Verse 132 (skanda.2.186.132)

रविरुवाच एवमस्तु मनुष्येंद्र तव वांछा मनोहरा एतत्स्तोत्रं त्वयोक्तं मे ये पठिष्यंति मानवाः

raviruvāca evamastu manuṣyeṁdra tava vāṁchā manoharā etatstotraṁ tvayoktaṁ me ye paṭhiṣyaṁti mānavāḥ

Ravi said: So be it, O lord of men; your wish is a delightful one. Whatever men shall recite this hymn spoken by you to me,

तेभ्यस्तुष्टः प्रदास्यामि सर्वान्कामान्नरेश्वर एतत्स्थानं परां ख्यातिं त्वन्नाम्ना यास्यति क्षितौ

tebhyastuṣṭaḥ pradāsyāmi sarvānkāmānnareśvara etatsthānaṁ parāṁ khyātiṁ tvannāmnā yāsyati kṣitau

to them, pleased, I shall grant all their desires, O lord of men; this place shall attain supreme renown on earth under your name.

Verse 134 (skanda.2.186.134)

सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति योऽत्र स्नानं समाचरेत् मद्भक्तेन सदा राजन्कर्त्तव्यं स्नानमत्र वै

sarvānkāmānavāpnoti yo’tra snānaṁ samācaret madbhaktena sadā rājankarttavyaṁ snānamatra vai

Whoever performs bathing here obtains all desires; bathing here should ever be performed, O king, by my devotee.

Verse 135 (skanda.2.186.135)

यंयं काममिहेच्छेत तंतं काममवाप्नुयात्

yaṁyaṁ kāmamiheccheta taṁtaṁ kāmamavāpnuyāt

Whatever desire one wishes for here, that same desire one obtains.

Verse 136 (skanda.2.186.136)

अगस्त्य उवाच इति दत्त्वा वरं देवः कृपया परया युतः भास्वान्सहस्रकिरणस्तदान्तर्द्धानमाययौ

agastya uvāca iti dattvā varaṁ devaḥ kṛpayā parayā yutaḥ bhāsvānsahasrakiraṇastadāntarddhānamāyayau

Agastya said: Having thus given the boon, the radiant god of a thousand rays, filled with supreme grace, then vanished.

Verse 137 (skanda.2.186.137)

राजा भास्करदेहोत्थां रविमूर्त्तिमनुत्तमाम् तत्र संस्थापयामास पूजयामास च स्वयम्

rājā bhāskaradehotthāṁ ravimūrttimanuttamām tatra saṁsthāpayāmāsa pūjayāmāsa ca svayam

The king then installed there an unsurpassed image of Ravi, arisen from the body of Bhaskara, and himself worshipped it.

Verse 138 (skanda.2.186.138)

घोषार्ककुण्डं तन्नाम्ना तत्र ख्यातिं जगाम ह यत्र स्नानान्नरो राजन्सूर्य्यलोके वसेत्सदा

ghoṣārkakuṇḍaṁ tannāmnā tatra khyātiṁ jagāma ha yatra snānānnaro rājansūryyaloke vasetsadā

By that name it became known there as Ghoshaarka-kunda; O king, by bathing there a man dwells forever in the world of the Sun.

Verse 139 (skanda.2.186.139)

इति रुचिरविधानैस्तूर्णमादित्यमूर्त्तिं विमलपरमभक्त्या पूजयित्वाऽऽदरेण तदमृतमयकुण्डे स्नानमादौ विधाय प्रचुरविमलकीर्तिः सूर्यलोके वसेत्सः

iti ruciravidhānaistūrṇamādityamūrttiṁ vimalaparamabhaktyā pūjayitvā’’dareṇa tadamṛtamayakuṇḍe snānamādau vidhāya pracuravimalakīrtiḥ sūryaloke vasetsaḥ

Thus, having with delightful rites reverently worshipped, with stainless and supreme devotion, the image of the Sun, and having first performed bathing in that nectar-filled tank, one of abundant, stainless fame dwells in the world of the Sun.
