Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 201
The Fourteen Treasures from the Churning of the Nectar
Verse 1 (skanda.2.201.1)
skanda uvāca tato hṛṣṭāḥ kāśyapeyā manthasthānamupetya te punarvarṣasahasraṁ ca manthanti sma payonidhim
Skanda said: Then the delighted sons of Kashyapa, returning to the place of churning, churned the ocean of milk again for a thousand years.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.201.2)
mathyamānāttathā sindhoḥ sarvestairapi kiñcana nāsīcca śithilā āsanmaṁthitāraḥ śvasanmukhāḥ
Yet, though the ocean was thus churned by all of them, nothing at all emerged; the churners, panting from their mouths, grew weary.
Verse 3 (skanda.2.201.3)
vāsukiśca mahāsarpaḥ prāṇavaiklavyamāptavān manthakāle mandaropi naikatrāsītsthirasthitiḥ
And the great serpent Vasuki suffered a failing of his vital breath; at the time of churning, even Mandara had no steady position in one place.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.201.4)
sarvāndṛṣṭvā nirutsāhānpradyumno viṇvanujñayā devāsurāhirājeṣu praviśya balamādadhau
Seeing all of them without vigor, Pradyumna, by Vishnu's sanction, entered into the gods, the asuras, and the king of serpents, and infused them with strength.
Verse 5 (skanda.2.201.5)
aniruddhopi tarhyeva tamākramya nagādhipam sahasrabāhubhistasthau mahācala ivā'paraḥ
Aniruddha too, at that very moment, taking hold of the lord of mountains, stood there with a thousand arms, like a second great mountain.
Verse 6 (skanda.2.201.6)
tato mamanthustarasā saṁprāptaparamojasaḥ savismayā mahābdhiṁ te surāsuragaṇā mudā
Then those hosts of gods and asuras, having attained supreme vigor, filled with wonder and joy, churned the great ocean vigorously.
Verse 7 (skanda.2.201.7)
nārāyaṇānubhāvena nāpurddevādayaḥ śramam śuśubhe manthanaṁ tacca samamākarṣaṇāttadā
Through the power of Narayana, the gods and the rest felt no fatigue; and that churning appeared beautiful, because the pulling was even on both sides.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.201.8)
mathyamāne mahāmbhodhau susruvuḥ paritastadā mahādrumāṇāṁ niryāsā bahavaścauṣadhīrasāḥ
As the great ocean was being churned, all around, many resins of great trees and essences of herbs flowed out.
Verse 9 (skanda.2.201.9)
tathābhūtādambunidherāvirāsītkalānidhiḥ kāntyauṣadhīnāmadhyakṣaḥ sarvāsāṁ ya udīryate
From that ocean, thus formed, arose the Moon, the overseer, through his splendor, of all herbs — celebrated among them all.
Verse 10 (skanda.2.201.10)
tato gavāmadhiṣṭhātrī sarvāsāmapi kāmadhuk havirddhānyabhavaddhenuḥ śītāṁśusadṛśadyutiḥ
Then arose the presiding cow of all cows, the wish-fulfilling Kamadhenu, named Havirdhani, of a splendor like the moon.
Verse 11 (skanda.2.201.11)
aśvaḥ śveto'thāvirāsīddhayānāmadhidevatā airāvataśca nāgendraścaturddantaḥ śaśiprabhaḥ
Then appeared the white horse, the presiding deity of all horses, and Airavata, the lord of elephants, four-tusked, of moon-like splendor.
Verse 12 (skanda.2.201.12)
pārijāto divyatarustarurājastato'bhavat maṇiratnaṁ kaustubhākhyaṁ padmarāgamabhūttataḥ
Then arose the Parijata, the divine tree, king of trees; then arose the ruby gem called Kaustubha.
Verse 13 (skanda.2.201.13)
tato'bhavannapsaraso rūpalāvaṇyabhūmayaḥ surā devī tato jajñe sarvamādakadevatā
Then arose the apsaras, the very ground of beauty and grace; then was born the goddess Sura, presiding deity of all intoxicants.
Verse 14 (skanda.2.201.14)
āsīdatha dhanuḥ śārṅgaṁ sarvaśastrādhidaivatam vādyādhidaivataṁ śaṁkhaḥ pāñcajanyastato'bhavat
Then appeared the bow Sharnga, presiding deity of all weapons; then arose the conch Panchajanya, presiding deity of musical instruments.
Verse 15 (skanda.2.201.15)
tatra candraḥ pārijātastathaivāpsarasāṁ gaṇaḥ ādityapathamāśritya tasthurete tu tatkṣaṇam
There, the Moon, the Parijata tree, and likewise the host of apsaras, taking refuge in the path of the sun, stood there at that very moment.
Verse 16 (skanda.2.201.16)
vāruṇīmaśvarājaṁ ca daityeśā jagṛhurdrutam airāvataṁ devarājo jagrāhānumatāddhareḥ
The lords of the daityas quickly seized Varuni and the king of horses; the king of the gods took Airavata, by the sanction of Hari.
Verse 17 (skanda.2.201.17)
kaustubhaśca dhanuḥ śaṁkho viṣṇumeva prapedire havirddhānīṁ tu te sarve tāpasebhyo dadustadā
The Kaustubha jewel, the bow, and the conch went to Vishnu alone; the cow Havirdhani, all of them then gave to the ascetics.
Verse 18 (skanda.2.201.18)
mathyamānātpunaḥ sindhoḥ sākṣācchrīrabhavatsvayam ānandayantī svadṛśā trilokīṁ hatavarcasam
Then, from the ocean thus churned again, Shri herself appeared directly, gladdening with her own glance the three worlds that had lost their splendor.
Verse 19 (skanda.2.201.19)
tāṁ grahītuṁ tu sarvepi surāsuranarādayaḥ aicchaṁstasyāḥ pratāpāttu śekentyetuṁ na kaścana
Gods, asuras, men, and others all desired to take hold of her; but because of her majesty, none of them was able to approach her.
Verse 20 (skanda.2.201.20)
tatastāṁ padmahastatvācchrīṁ viditvaiva vāsavaḥ ānandaṁ paramaṁ prāpa brahmādyā ye ca tadvidaḥ
Then Indra, recognizing her as Shri by the lotus in her hand, attained supreme joy, as did Brahma and the others who knew her.
Verse 21 (skanda.2.201.21)
tāvattatrāmbudhiḥ sākṣādetya tāṁ haima āsane kanyā mameyamityuktvā gṛhītvāṅka upāviśat
At that moment the Ocean itself came there in person, and, saying, 'She is my daughter,' took her upon a golden seat and set her upon his lap.
Verse 22 (skanda.2.201.22)
punarabdhermathyamānādadhikaṁ balibhiśca taiḥ sudhārthibhirddhairyavadbhirapi naivābhavatsudhā
Yet, though the ocean was churned even more vigorously by those mighty, patient ones desiring the nectar, still no nectar appeared.
Verse 23 (skanda.2.201.23)
tadā śithilayatnāste nirāśā amṛtodbhave pramlānavaktrāḥ khinnāśca babhūvuḥ kāśyapā mune
O sage, then the sons of Kashyapa, their efforts slackened, despairing of the nectar's appearance, became downcast of face and weary.
Verse 24 (skanda.2.201.24)
dṛṣṭvā tathāvidhāṁstāṁśca bhagavānkaruṇānidhiḥ udyuktobhūtsvayaṁ brahmanmanthanāya hasanvibhuḥ
O brahmin, seeing them in this state, the Blessed Lord, the treasury of compassion, himself, smiling, took up the effort of churning.
Verse 25 (skanda.2.201.25)
ratnakāñcīdṛḍhābaddhakakṣapītāmbaradyutiḥ dvābhyāṁ dvābhyāmahiṁ madhye dorbhyāmubhayatograhīt
With a jeweled girdle firmly bound at his waist, radiant in his yellow garment, he took hold of the serpent from the middle, with two arms on each side.
Verse 26 (skanda.2.201.26)
dhṛtāhivadanā daityāstasthurekata eva te ekato dhṛtatatpucchā devāstasthustadākhilāḥ
On one side stood the daityas, holding the serpent's mouth-end; on the other side stood all the gods, holding its tail-end.
Verse 27 (skanda.2.201.27)
tanmadhyagaśca bhagavānmamanthābdhiṁ sa līlayā dadāno nayanānanda cañcatkaravibhūṣaṇaḥ
And the Blessed Lord, standing in the midst of them, churned the ocean with mere play, his moving hand-ornaments giving delight to the eyes.
Verse 28 (skanda.2.201.28)
brahmā saharṣipravarairantarikṣasthitastadā avākirattaṁ kusumaiḥ kurvañjayajayadhvanim
Brahma, together with the foremost sages, standing in the sky, then showered him with flowers, raising the cry, 'Victory, victory!'
Verse 29 (skanda.2.201.29)
mathyamānāttataḥ sindhorjjajñe dhanvantariḥ pumān viṣṇoraṁśena gaurāṁgaḥ sudhākumbhaṁ kare dadhat
Then, from the ocean thus churned, was born the man Dhanvantari, of fair complexion, a partial incarnation of Vishnu, holding in his hand a pot of nectar.
Verse 30 (skanda.2.201.30)
ghṛtādīnāṁ hi sarveṣāṁ rasānāṁ sāramuttamam amṛtaṁ tadgṛhītvā'sau śriyontikamupāyayau
He, having taken up that nectar, the supreme essence of all essences beginning with ghee, approached the presence of Shri.
