Sri Narayana said: Having worshipped Him with many kinds of mental offerings, the devotee should invoke Him and establish Him in the image with the gesture of establishment.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.218.2)
tatastadaṁgadevāṁśca tattanmantraiḥ pṛthakpṛthak | āvāhya nāmamantrairvā supratiṣṭhāpayecca saḥ
Then he should invoke the attendant deities, each separately with their respective mantras, or with mantras of their names, and duly establish them.
Verse 3 (skanda.2.218.3)
ghaṇṭādi vādayedvādyaṁ kuryādvā tālikādhvanim | suptotthitamivā'thainaṁ kārayeddantadhāvanam
He should ring the bell and other instruments, or clap his hands, and then, as if He had just risen from sleep, cause Him to clean His teeth.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.218.4)
śyāmākaviṣṇukāntābhyāṁ dūrvābjābhyāṁ sahodakam | pādyametatprabhordadyāttatorghyācamanīyake
With shyamaka grass, vishnukranta flower, durva grass, and lotus, together with water, he should offer this foot-water to the Lord; then the arghya and achamaniya waters.
Verse 5 (skanda.2.218.5)
candanākṣatapuṣpāṇi darbhāgratilasarṣapān | yavāndūrvā cārghyapātre nikṣipedambunā bhṛte
Into the arghya vessel filled with water, he should place sandal-paste, unbroken rice, flowers, the tips of kusha grass, sesame, mustard seeds, barley, and durva grass.
Verse 6 (skanda.2.218.6)
jātīphalalavaṁgailākaṅkolośīravāsitam | dadyādācamanīyāmbu tataḥ saṁsnapayeddharim
He should offer the achamaniya water, scented with nutmeg, cloves, cardamom, kankola, and vetiver root; then he should bathe Hari.
Verse 7 (skanda.2.218.7)
sugandhipuṣpatailena kuryādabhyaṁgamāditaḥ | surabhidravyakalkena kuryāccodvartanaṁ tataḥ
First he should anoint Him with fragrant flower-oil, then perform the unguent-rubbing with a paste of fragrant substances.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.218.8)
kṣīreṇa dadhnā cājyena madhunā sitayā tathā | snapayeddharimavyagrastattanmantraiḥ pṛthakpṛthak
With an undistracted mind, he should bathe Hari with milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar, each with its own separate mantra.
Verse 9 (skanda.2.218.9)
sugandhinā ca śuddhena snānamuṣṇena cāmbunā | taṁ kārayitvā gandhādyaiḥ snānapīṭhe'rcayellaghu
Having then bathed Him with pure, fragrant, warm water, he should briefly worship Him upon the bathing-seat with sandal-paste and the rest.
Verse 10 (skanda.2.218.10)

Then, having removed the withered flowers to the north, the twice-born should perform the consecratory bathing with the Rajana and other Sama hymns, or with the Mahapurusha-vidya, or the Shri-sukta and Vishnu-sukta.
Verse 11 (skanda.2.218.11)
nāmnāṁ sahasreṇa hareraṣṭottaraśatena vā | abhiṣekaṁ tu kurvīranstriyaḥ śūdrāśca dīkṣitāḥ
Initiated women and Shudras should perform the consecratory bathing with the thousand names of Hari, or with the hundred and eight.
Verse 12 (skanda.2.218.12)
tataḥ pramārjya vastreṇa tamanarghyāṁśukāni ca | paridhāpayedatipremṇā rādhāṁ cānyāṁśca śaktitaḥ
Then, having wiped Him with a cloth, he should, with great love, clothe Him in priceless garments, and likewise Radha and the others, according to his means.
Verse 13 (skanda.2.218.13)
upavītaṁ bhagavate dadyātsūkṣmaṁ sitaṁ śubham | ratnahemādyalaṁkārānsāṁgāyāsmai ca dhārayet
He should give the Lord a fine, white, auspicious sacred thread, and adorn Him, together with His attendant deities, with ornaments of jewels and gold.
Verse 14 (skanda.2.218.14)
yathāṛtu yathāsthānaṁ candanena yathocitam | tilakānulepanaṁ kuryātsakeśaraghanādinā
According to the season and the place, he should apply the tilaka and unguent of sandal-paste as is fitting, mixed with saffron and other substances.
Verse 15 (skanda.2.218.15)
yathocitamalaṁkārāndhārayitvā ca rādhikām | patralekhāṁ ca tilakaṁ vidadhyātkuṅkumākṣataiḥ
Having adorned Radhika with fitting ornaments, he should also draw leaf-patterns and apply the tilaka with vermilion and unbroken rice.
Verse 16 (skanda.2.218.16)
ādarśaṁ darśayitvā'tha puṣpasrakchekharādibhiḥ | pūjayettaṁ sahasreṇa tulasīmañjarīdalaiḥ
Having then shown Him a mirror, he should worship Him with a thousand flower-garlands, crests, and tulasi-manjari leaves.
Verse 17 (skanda.2.218.17)
tulasyā vā'tha puṣpeṇa pratyekaṁ nāma vaiṣṇavam | namaḥ prāntacaturthyantaṁ kīrttayannarcayetprabhum
Or, with a tulasi leaf or a flower for each, he should worship the Lord, reciting each Vaishnava name in the dative case ending with 'namah'.
Verse 18 (skanda.2.218.18)
sugandhidravyacūrṇāni tataḥ saubhāgyavanti ca | samarpya dhūpaṁ kurvīta daśāṁgaṁ vāmṛtādikam
Then, having offered fragrant powders that bring good fortune, he should offer incense, either of the ten ingredients or the amrita type.
Verse 19 (skanda.2.218.19)
dīpaṁ ghṛtena kurvīta varttikādvayadīpitam | kṛtaṁ svaśaktitaḥ śuddhaṁ mahānaivedyamarpayet
He should offer a lamp of ghee lit with a pair of wicks; and he should offer a great food-offering, pure and prepared according to his means.
Verse 20 (skanda.2.218.20)
saṁyāvapāyasāpūpaśaṣkulīkhaṇḍalaḍḍakān | pūrikāḥ polikā maudgamodanaṁ vyañjanāni ca | dadhidugdhaghṛtādīni catuṣpadyāṁ nidhārayet
He should set out sweet cakes, rice-pudding, cakes, fried sweets, sugar-candy sweets, and laddus; puris, polikas, mung-rice, and vegetable dishes; and curd, milk, ghee, and the like on a four-legged stand.
Verse 21 (skanda.2.218.21)
bhojayettaṁ tataḥ premṇā madhye pānīyamarpayan | muhūrttārddhe gate dadyāddhastaprakṣālanāṁbu ca
Then he should feed Him lovingly, offering water in the midst; when half a muhurta has passed, he should offer water for washing the hands.
Verse 22 (skanda.2.218.22)
uccheṣaṇaṁ bhagavato viṣvaksenādidevatāḥ | upakalpyānyataḥ sthāpya svārthaṁ tadbhuvamāmṛjet
He should offer the remnants of the Lord's food to Vishvaksena and the other deities, place them elsewhere, and then clean that spot for his own purpose.
Verse 23 (skanda.2.218.23)
mukhavāsaṁ tato dadyātkṛtāṁ tāmbūlavīṭikām | pūgacūrṇalavaṅgailājātījādisamanvitām
Then he should offer a mouth-freshener, a prepared betel roll, containing areca-nut powder, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, and the like.
Verse 24 (skanda.2.218.24)
phalaṁ ca nālikerādi dattvā śaktyā ca dakṣiṇām | mahānīrājanaṁ kuryādgītavāditrapūrvakam
Having offered fruit such as coconut and a monetary gift according to his means, he should perform the great waving of lamps, accompanied by song and instrumental music.
Verse 25 (skanda.2.218.25)
stuyātpuṣpāñjalīndattvā tatstotreṇaiva taṁ tataḥ | nāmasaṁkīrtanaṁ kuryādgāyannṛtyaṁśca tatpuraḥ
Then, offering handfuls of flowers, he should praise Him with hymns of praise; he should perform the chanting of His names, singing and dancing before Him.
Verse 26 (skanda.2.218.26)
muhūrttaṁ sa vidhāyetthaṁ kṛtvā caiva pradakṣiṇām | praṇāmaṁ daṇḍavatkuryāttiryaktaddakṣiṇe bhuvi
Having thus performed these rites for a muhurta and circumambulated Him, he should make prostration like a fallen staff, lying crosswise on the ground to His right.
Verse 27 (skanda.2.218.27)
aṣṭāṁgaṁ vāpi pañcāgaṁ praṇāmaṁ puruṣaścaret | pañcāṁgameva nārī tu nānyathā munisattama
A man should perform prostration with eight limbs, or with five; but O best of sages, a woman should perform only the five-limbed prostration, and no other.
Verse 28 (skanda.2.218.28)
padbhyāṁ karābhyāṁ jānubhyāmurasā śirasā dṛśā | vacasā manasā ceti praṇāmo'ṣṭāṁga īritaḥ
With the two feet, the two hands, the two knees, the chest, the head, the eyes, the speech, and the mind — such is declared to be the eight-limbed prostration.
Verse 29 (skanda.2.218.29)
bāhubhyāṁ caiva manasā śirasā vacasā dṛśā | pañcāṁgoyaṁ praṇāmaḥ syātpūjāsu pravarāvimau
With the two arms, the mind, the head, the speech, and the eyes — this is the five-limbed prostration. These two are the foremost forms in worship.
Verse 30 (skanda.2.218.30)
bhītaṁ māṁ saṁsṛteḥ pāhi prapannaṁ tvāṁ prabho iti | tataḥ saṁprārtha svādhyāyaṁ śaktyā kurvīta naityakam
'O Lord, protect me, who am afraid of worldly existence and who have taken refuge in You' — having thus prayed, he should then perform his daily study of scripture, according to his ability.
Verse 31 (skanda.2.218.31)
dhyātvā śeṣāṁ ca taddattāṁ gṛhītvā śirasādarāt | āvāhitaṁ yathāpūrvaṁ rādhākṛṣṇaṁ hṛdambuje | saṁsthāpayeccāṁgadevānsvasvasthānaṁ visarjayet
Meditating once more, and reverently taking the remnant given by Him upon his head, he should establish the invoked Radha-Krishna, as before, within the lotus of his heart, and dismiss the attendant deities each to his own place.
Verse 32 (skanda.2.218.32)
karaṇḍake vā śayyāyāṁ mandire pratimāṁ hareḥ | śāyayitvā pidhāya dvārvaiśvadevaṁ samācaret
Having laid the image of Hari to rest, either in a casket or upon a couch in the shrine, and closed the door, he should perform the Vaishvadeva rite.
Verse 33 (skanda.2.218.33)
prāsādikaṁ harerannaṁ svapoṣyebhyo vibhajya saḥ | svayaṁ bhuktvā tatkathādyairdinaśeṣamatikramet
Having distributed the sanctified food of Hari among his dependents, and having eaten himself, he should pass the rest of the day in narrating His stories and the like.
Verse 34 (skanda.2.218.34)
mahāpūjāvidhānena proktenānena yonvaham | bhaktyā samarcayedviṣṇuṁ sa bhavettasya pārṣadaḥ
Whoever daily worships Vishnu with devotion, according to this declared rite of great worship, becomes one of His attendants.
Verse 35 (skanda.2.218.35)
divyaṁ vimānamāruhya bhāsvaraṁ devatepsitam | golokākhyaṁ harerddhāma divyāṅgo yāti pūjakaḥ
Mounting a divine, radiant aerial chariot desired even by the gods, the worshipper, his body made divine, goes to the abode of Hari called Goloka.
Verse 36 (skanda.2.218.36)
phalābhisaṁdhinā vāpi yastamarceddinedine | sopi dharmaṁ kāmamarthaṁ mokṣaṁ cāpnotyabhīpsitam
And even he who worships Him day after day with an eye to reward attains the dharma, desire, wealth, and liberation that he seeks.
Verse 37 (skanda.2.218.37)
itthaṁ pūjāvidhiṁ karttumaśakto rādhayā saha | harimekaṁ yathā labdhairarcedbhaktyopacārakaiḥ
One who is unable to perform this rite of worship together with Radha should worship Hari alone with whatever offerings he can obtain, with devotion.
Verse 38 (skanda.2.218.38)
dvādaśākṣaramantreṇa dvijo'nyo nāmamantrataḥ | śrīrādhākṛṣṇamabhyarcedbhaktirevā'tra siddhidā
A twice-born should worship Sri Radha-Krishna with the twelve-syllabled mantra, another with the mantra of His name; here it is devotion alone that grants accomplishment.
Verse 39 (skanda.2.218.39)
ekādaśyāṁ harerjanmotsavādau tu viśeṣataḥ | mahāpūjaiva karttavyā svaśaktyā'khilavaiṣṇavaiḥ
On Ekadashi, and especially on the festival of Hari's birth and similar occasions, great worship alone should be performed by all Vaishnavas, according to their capacity.
Verse 40 (skanda.2.218.40)
pratiṣṭhāmātramapi yaḥ kuryādanyakṛtālaye | sa sārvabhauma rājyaṁ vai prāpnuyānnaṣṭakilviṣaḥ
Whoever performs even the mere consecration of an image in a temple built by another, his sins destroyed, attains sovereignty over the whole earth.
Verse 41 (skanda.2.218.41)
kārayenmandiraṁ ramyaṁ dhanāḍhyaśca harerdṛḍham | yaḥ sa tu prāpnuyādrājyaṁ trailokyasyāpyakaṇṭakam
He who, being wealthy, has a beautiful and sturdy temple of Hari built, attains unchallenged sovereignty over even the three worlds.
Verse 42 (skanda.2.218.42)
vṛttidānena pūjāyāḥ pravāhaṁ varddhayettu yaḥ | sa pumānprāpnuyānnūnaṁ viṣṇuloke mahatsukham
He who, by endowing a livelihood for the priests, increases the continuity of the worship, that man certainly attains great happiness in the world of Vishnu.
Verse 43 (skanda.2.218.43)
pratiṣṭhāṁ mandiraṁ pūjāṁ kāraye ttrīṇyapīha yaḥ | samānaiśvaryamāpnoti vāsudevasya sa dhuvam
He who arranges for all three — consecration, temple, and worship — certainly attains a glory equal to that of Vasudeva.
Verse 44 (skanda.2.218.44)
harervṛrttiṁ haredyastu kṛtāṁ svena pareṇa vā | kalpamekaṁ sa vai bhuṁkte narake yamayātanāḥ
But whoever seizes the endowment made for Hari's worship, whether established by himself or by another, suffers the torments of Yama in hell for a full kalpa.
Verse 45 (skanda.2.218.45)
karttā kārayitā yaśca sahāyaścānumodakaḥ | caturṇāṁ hi phale bhāgaḥ sukṛtasyetarasya ca
The doer, the one who causes it to be done, the helper, and the one who approves — these four share alike in the fruit, whether of good deeds or of the opposite.
Verse 46 (skanda.2.218.46)
iti kriyāyogavidhirmayā nārada kīrttitaḥ | yenaikāntikadharmo'tra siddhyettatpravaṇātmanām
Thus, O Narada, I have declared the rite of ritual discipline, by which the exclusive dharma is accomplished for those whose minds are devoted to it.
Verse 47 (skanda.2.218.47)
viṣayāṁścintayaṁścitte bahiḥ pūjāṁ hareścaran | saṁbhāreṇāpi mahatā na yathoktaṁ phalaṁ labhet
One who, while thinking of sense-objects in his heart, outwardly performs the worship of Hari, does not obtain the declared fruit even with a great abundance of offerings.
Verse 48 (skanda.2.218.48)
itastato grāmyasukhe bhramatsvīyaṁ manastataḥ | niyamya viṣṇupūjāyāṁ mumukṣuḥ prayato bhavet
Therefore, one who seeks liberation should restrain his mind, which wanders here and there after worldly pleasures, and apply it with effort to the worship of Vishnu.
Verse 49 (skanda.2.218.49)
mahāvratā bhūritapasvinopi svadhītavedā api buddhimantaḥ | sāṁkhyaṁ ca yogaṁ pariśīlayantaḥ siddhiṁ na yāntyeva vinārcanaṁ hareḥ
Even those of great vows, of abundant austerity, learned in the Vedas, and intelligent, who study Sankhya and Yoga, do not attain perfection at all without the worship of Hari.
