Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 23
The Glory of Chakra-tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.2.23.1)
śrīsūta uvāca athāhaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi dvijendrāḥ satyavādinaḥ cakratīrthasya māhātmyaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam
Shri Suta said: O truthful lords among the twice-born! Now I shall relate the glory of Chakra-tirtha, which destroys all sins.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.23.2)
ye śṛṇvaṁti mahāpuṇyaṁ cakratīrthasya vaibhavam te yāṁti viṣṇubhavanaṁ punarāvṛttivarjitam
Those who hear of this immensely meritorious splendor of Chakra-tirtha attain the abode of Vishnu from which there is no return.
Verse 3 (skanda.2.23.3)
annadāne ca vimukhā jaladāne tathaiva ca godānavimukhā ye ca śuddhāste'tra nimajjanāt
Even those who have been averse to giving food, water, or cows are purified simply by immersing themselves here.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.23.4)
tasmātpuṇyatamaṁ tīrthaṁ cakratīrthamanuttamam
Therefore Chakra-tirtha is the most meritorious and unsurpassed of all sacred fords.
Verse 5 (skanda.2.23.5)
śrīsūta uvāca purā śrīvatsagotrīyaḥ padmanābho jitendriyaḥ cakrapuṣkariṇītīre so'tapyata mahattapaḥ
Shri Suta said: In ancient times, a brahmin named Padmanabha, born in the Shrivatsa lineage and master of his senses, performed great austerity on the bank of the Chakra-Pushkarini.
Verse 6 (skanda.2.23.6)
dayāyukto nirāhāraḥ satyavādī jitendriyaḥ ātmavatsarvabhūtāni paśyanviṣayaniḥspṛhaḥ
He was compassionate, fasting, truthful, master of his senses, seeing all beings as his own self, and free of desire for sensory objects.
Verse 7 (skanda.2.23.7)
sarvabhūtahito dāntaḥ sarvadvaṁdvavivarjitaḥ varṣāṇi katicitso'yaṁ jīrṇaparṇāśano'bhavat
He was benevolent to all beings, self-controlled, free from every pair of opposites; for some years he subsisted only on withered fallen leaves.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.23.8)
kaṁcitkālaṁ jalāhāro vāyubhakṣaḥ kiyatsamāḥ evaṁ dvādaśa varṣāṇi padmanābho mahāmuniḥ
For a time he lived on water alone, and for some years on air alone; thus for twelve years the great sage Padmanabha —
Verse 9 (skanda.2.23.9)
atapyata tapo ghoraṁ devairapi suduṣkaram atha tattapasā tuṣṭo bhagavānkamalāpatiḥ
— practiced such fierce austerity as would be exceedingly difficult even for the gods; then, pleased by that austerity, the Blessed Lord, consort of Kamala (Lakshmi) —
Verse 10 (skanda.2.23.10)
pratyakṣatāmagāttasya śaṁkhacakragadādharaḥ vikacāṁbujapatrākṣaḥ sūryakoṭisamaprabhaḥ
— became manifest directly before him, bearing conch, discus, and mace, his eyes like fully-blossomed lotus petals, his radiance equal to a million suns.
Verse 11 (skanda.2.23.11)

Opening his eyes there, he beheld Venkateshvara — the serene Shrinivasa, ocean of grace, bearing conch and discus; and seeing that great divine being, he began to offer praise.
Verse 12 (skanda.2.23.12)

Salutation to you who destroy sin, Vasudeva, Vishnu! Salutation to you, Shrinivasa, who dwell on Sheshachala.
Verse 14 (skanda.2.23.14)
namastrailokyanāthāya viśvarūpāya sākṣiṇe śivabrahmādivaṁdyāya śrīnivāsāya te namaḥ
Salutation to the lord of the three worlds, the universal form, the witness of all, honored by Shiva and Brahma — salutation to you, Shrinivasa.
Verse 15 (skanda.2.23.15)
namaḥ kamalanetrāya kṣīrābdhiśayanāya te duṣṭarākṣasasaṁhartre śrīnivāsāya te namaḥ
Salutation to you, lotus-eyed one, who rest upon the ocean of milk; salutation to you, Shrinivasa, destroyer of wicked demons.
Verse 16 (skanda.2.23.16)

Salutation to the god beloved of his devotees, the lord of the gods.
Verse 17 (skanda.2.23.17)
praṇatārtivināśāya śrīnivāsāya te namaḥ
Salutation to you, Shrinivasa, who destroy the suffering of those who bow before you.
Verse 18 (skanda.2.23.18)

yogināṁ pataye nityaṁ vedavedyāya viṣṇave bhaktānāṁ pāpasaṁhartre śrīnivāsāya te namaḥ
Salutation to you, eternal lord of yogis, Vishnu who is known through the Vedas; salutation to you, Shrinivasa, destroyer of your devotees' sins.
Verse 19 (skanda.2.23.19)
evaṁ stuto mahābhāgaḥ śrīnivāso jagaṁmayaḥ padmanābhākhyaṛṣiṇā cakratīrthanivāsinā
Thus was the fortunate Shrinivasa, who pervades the universe, praised by the sage named Padmanabha, dweller by the Chakra-tirtha.
Verse 20 (skanda.2.23.20)
saṁtoṣaṁ paramaṁ prāpya veṁkaṭeśo dayānidhiḥ
Having attained supreme delight, Venkatesha, the ocean of compassion —
Verse 21 (skanda.2.23.21)
padmanābhaṁ dvijavaraṁ śāṁtaṁ dharmaparāyaṇam sudhādhāropamaṁ vākyamabravītpuruṣottamaḥ
— spoke to the serene and dharma-devoted excellent brahmin Padmanabha words like a stream of nectar, that Supreme Person.
Verse 22 (skanda.2.23.22)
śrīnivāsa uvāca dvijavarya mahābhāga matpādakamalārcaka cakratīrthasya tīre tvamākalpaṁ pūjayanvasa
Shrinivasa said: O excellent brahmin, O fortunate one, worshipper of my lotus feet, dwell on the bank of Chakra-tirtha, worshipping me, until the end of the cosmic age.
Verse 23 (skanda.2.23.23)
ityuktvā bhagavānviṣṇustatraivāṁtaradhīyata aṁtardhānaṁ gate deve śrīnivāse jagadgurau
Having said this, the Blessed Vishnu vanished then and there; when the divine teacher of the universe, Shrinivasa, had disappeared —
Verse 24 (skanda.2.23.24)
cakratīrthasya tīre tu vāsaṁ cakre mahāmatiḥ tataḥ kālāṁtare kaścidrākṣaso bhīmadarśanaḥ
— that wise man made his dwelling on the bank of Chakra-tirtha; then, after some time, a demon of terrifying appearance —
Verse 25 (skanda.2.23.25)
muniṁ taṁ padmanābhākhyaṁ nārāyaṇaparāyaṇam āyayau bhakṣituṁ krūraḥ kṣudhayā paripīḍataḥ
— that cruel demon, tormented by hunger, came there to devour the sage Padmanabha, who was wholly devoted to Narayana.
Verse 26 (skanda.2.23.26)
brāhmaṇaṁ tarasā so'yaṁ rākṣaso jagṛhe tadā gṛhītastarasā tena vipro vedāṁgapāragaḥ
That demon at once seized the brahmin with great force; seized forcibly by him, the brahmin, learned in the auxiliary Vedic sciences —
Verse 27 (skanda.2.23.27)
pracukrośa dayāmbhodhimāpannānāṁ parāyaṇam nārāyaṇaṁ cakrapāṇiṁ pakṣa rakṣeti vai muhuḥ
— cried out again and again: "O Narayana, wielder of the discus, ocean of compassion, refuge of those in distress! Take my side, protect me, protect me!"
Verse 28 (skanda.2.23.28)

veṁkaṭeśa dayāsiṁdho śaraṇāgatapālaka trāhi māṁ puruṣavyāghra rakṣovaśamupāgatam
"O Venkatesha, ocean of compassion, protector of those who take refuge! O tiger among men, save me, fallen into the demon's power!"

lakṣmīkāṁta hare viṣṇo vaikuṇṭha garuḍadhvaja māṁ rakṣa rākṣasākrāṁtaṁ grāhākrāṁtaṁ gajaṁ yathā
"O beloved of Lakshmi, O Hari, O Vishnu, O dweller of Vaikuntha, O bearer of the Garuda banner! Protect me, seized by this demon, as you once protected the elephant seized by the crocodile."
Verse 30 (skanda.2.23.30)
dāmodara jagannātha hiraṇyāsuramardana prahlādamiva māṁ rakṣa rākṣasenātipīḍitam
"O Damodara, O lord of the universe, O crusher of the demon Hiranya! Protect me, sorely afflicted by this demon, as you once protected Prahlada."
Verse 31 (skanda.2.23.31)
ityevaṁ stuvatatastasya padmanābhasya he dvijāḥ svabhaktasya bhayaṁ jñātvā cakrapāṇirdayānidhiḥ
O brahmins, thus while Padmanabha was praising him, the discus-bearing ocean of compassion, knowing the fear of his devotee —
Verse 32 (skanda.2.23.32)
svacakraṁ preṣayāmāsa bhaktarakṣaṇakāraṇāt preritaṁ viṣṇucakraṁ tadviṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā
— sent forth his own discus for the protection of his devotee; that discus of Vishnu, hurled by the all-powerful Vishnu —
Verse 33 (skanda.2.23.33)
ājagāmātha vegena cakrapuṣkariṇītaṭam anaṁtādityasaṁkāśamanaṁtāgnisamaprabham
— came swiftly to the bank of the Chakra-Pushkarini, resembling countless suns, radiant like countless fires.
Verse 34 (skanda.2.23.34)
mahājvālaṁ mahānāda mahāsuravimardanam dṛṣṭvā sudarśanaṁ viṣṇo rākṣaso'tha pradudruve
Beholding that Sudarshana discus of Vishnu — blazing with great flame, roaring with a mighty sound, crusher of great demons — the demon fled in terror.
Verse 35 (skanda.2.23.35)
dravamāṇasya tasyāśu rākṣasasya sudarśanam śiraścakarta sahasā jvālāmālādurāsadam
The Sudarshana discus, unapproachable in its garland of flames, at once severed the head of that fleeing demon.
Verse 36 (skanda.2.23.36)
tato vipravaro dṛṣṭvā rākṣasaṁ patitaṁ bhuvi mudā paramayā yuktastuṣṭāva ca sudarśanam
Then the excellent brahmin, seeing the demon fallen to the ground, filled with supreme joy, began to praise Sudarshana.
Verse 37 (skanda.2.23.37)

O you of mighty roar, skilled in the destruction of demons in battle! Salutation to you, O Sudarshana, destroyer of your devotees' suffering!

Protect me, terrified as I am, from every taint of sin as well; O lord Sudarshana, O mighty one, may you always in Chakra-tirtha —
Verse 40 (skanda.2.23.40)

sannidhehi hitāya tvaṁ jagato muktikāṁkṣiṇaḥ brāhmaṇenaivamuktaṁ tadviṣṇucakraṁ munīśvarāḥ
— abide, for the good of the people of the world who yearn for liberation. O lords of sages, when the brahmin had spoken thus, that discus of Vishnu —
Verse 41 (skanda.2.23.41)
taṁ prāha padmanābhākhyaṁ prīṇayanniva sauhṛdāt
— spoke to that brahmin named Padmanabha, as if pleasing him out of friendship.
Verse 42 (skanda.2.23.42)

— impelled by Vishnu, O brahmin, came here swiftly; this vile demon who tormented you has been slain by me.
Verse 45 (skanda.2.23.45)
mocitastvaṁ bhayādasmāttvaṁ hi bhakto hareḥ sadā cakratīrthe mahāpuṇye sarvapāpahare dvija
You are released from this fear, for you are ever a devotee of Hari; O brahmin, in this immensely meritorious Chakra-tirtha, which removes all sins —
Verse 46 (skanda.2.23.46)
