The Beginning of Arjuna's Tirtha-Pilgrimage

Chapter 28All chaptersChapter 30

Verse 1 (skanda.2.29.1)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ tīrthānāmiha sarveṣāṁ prabhāvaḥ kathitastvayā nadīnāṁ parvatānāṁ ca kṣetrāṇāṁ sarasāmapi

The sages said: You have told us here the power of all the tirthas, the rivers, the mountains, the sacred fields, and the lakes as well.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.29.2)

nideśātpadmagarbhasya suvarṇamukharī nadī nītā bhuvamagastyena vyākhyātā bhavatānagha

By the command of Padmagarbha (Brahma), the river Suvarnamukhari was brought down to earth by Agastya — this you, O sinless one, have explained to us.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.29.3)

tadutpattiprabhāvaṁ ca tīrthaughāṁstatsamāśrayān śrotuṁ saṁprītirutpannā tanno vaktuṁ tvamarhasi

But as to the origin and power of that river, and the multitude of tirthas that rest upon it, a great longing has arisen in us to hear of them; you should tell us this.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.29.4)

praṇamya śambhuṁ nandīśaṁ ṣaḍāsyaṁ vyāsameva ca munibhiḥ prārthitaḥ sūtastadā vaktuṁ pracakrame

Having bowed to Shambhu, to Nandisha, to the six-faced one (Kartikeya), and to Vyasa himself, Suta, thus entreated by the sages, then began to speak.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.29.5)

śrīsūta uvāca sādhu pṛṣṭaṁ mahābhāga bhavadbhirmaṁgalāvaham ākhyānametadāmnāya śravaṇodbhūtasiddhidam

Shri Suta said: Well have you asked, O greatly blessed ones, a question that brings auspiciousness; this traditional tale bestows accomplishment merely by its hearing.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.29.6)

śṛṇutāvahitā divyāṁ kathāṁ kalmaṣanāśinīm bharadvājena kathitāṁ pārthāya kathayāmi vaḥ

Listen attentively to this divine tale, the destroyer of impurity, told by Bharadvaja to Partha (Arjuna); I shall tell it to you.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.29.7)

avāpya drupadātprājñādyājñasenīṁ pṛthāsutāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭranideśena jagmuḥ karipuraṁ śubham

Having obtained Yajnaseni (Draupadi) from the wise Drupada, the sons of Pritha, by the command of Dhritarashtra, went to the auspicious city of the elephant (Hastinapura, Karipura).

Verse 8 (skanda.2.29.8)

bhīṣmeṇa cāṁbikeyena tatra saṁmānitāstadā duryodhanādibhiḥ sārddhaṁ nyavasanpañcavatsarān

Honoured there by Bhishma and by the son of Ambika (Dhritarashtra), they dwelt together with Duryodhana and the rest for five years.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.29.9)

tato'nuśiṣṭo bhīṣmādyairdhṛtarāṣṭro mahāyaśāḥ sarveṣāṁ kulavṛddhānāṁ vāsudevasya cāgrataḥ

Then Dhritarashtra, of great fame, instructed by Bhishma and the others, in the presence of all the elders of the family and of Vasudeva,

Verse 10 (skanda.2.29.10)

pradadau pāṁḍuputrebhyastatsevāhṛṣṭamānasaḥ sārdharājyaṁ puravaraṁ khāṇḍavaprasthasaṁjñikam

his mind delighted by their service, granted to the sons of Pandu half the kingdom, the excellent city named Khandavaprastha.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.29.11)

āmaṁtrya pāṇḍutanayā dhṛtarāṣṭrādikānkurūn jagmustatkhāṇḍavaprasthaṁ puraṁ kṛṣṇasamanvitāḥ

Having taken leave of Dhritarashtra and the other Kurus, the sons of Pandu, together with Krishna, went to that city of Khandavaprastha.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.29.12)

indraprasthāhvaye tatra rakṣite viśvakarmaṇā vasanpure'śiṣatpṛthvīṁ sānujo dharmanaṁdanaḥ

There, in the city called Indraprastha, protected by Vishvakarma, dwelling in that city, Dharma's son (Yudhishthira), together with his younger brothers, ruled the earth.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.29.13)

gate kṛṣṇe nijapuraṁ nāradasyānuśāsanāt pratijñāṁ cakrire pārthā dharmajñā draupadīṁ prati

When Krishna had gone to his own city, by the instruction of Narada, the sons of Pritha, knowers of dharma, made a vow concerning Draupadi:

Verse 14 (skanda.2.29.14)

yathākrameṇa sā kṛṣṇā varṣamekaikamādarāt ekaikasya gṛhe tiṣṭhetpratinirṇayapūrvakam

that in due order, that Krishna (Draupadi) should reverently dwell for one year each, by fixed determination, in the house of each one of them,

Verse 15 (skanda.2.29.15)

yaḥ paśyettāṁ paragṛhe sthitāṁ pāṁcālanaṁdinīm tenaikahāyanamitaṁ vidheyaṁ tīrthasevanam

and whoever should see her present in the house of another, seated as the delight of the Panchalas — he must undertake a year's residence in pilgrimage to sacred tirthas as penance.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.29.16)

evaṁ kṛtapratijñāste pāṇḍubhūpālanaṁdanāḥ vyāpārairloṁkasāmānyairninyuḥ kālamataṁdritāḥ

Thus having made this vow, those sons of the King of Pandu passed their time untiringly in the ordinary occupations of the world.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.29.17)

atha jānapado vipro rājagehāṁgaṇe sthitaḥ cukrośa bahudhā dhenurhṛtā me taskarairiti

Then a village Brahmin, standing in the courtyard of the king's house, cried out again and again: 'My cow has been stolen by thieves!'

Verse 18 (skanda.2.29.18)

samāśvāsya ca taṁ vipraṁ praviveśa dhanaṁjayaḥ āyudhāni samānetuṁ tvarayā śastramaṁdiram

Having consoled that Brahmin, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) entered the armoury in haste to fetch his weapons.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.29.19)

tatrāpaśyatsamāsīnau pāṁcālīdharmanandanau jānannapi pratijñāṁ sa dhanurjagrāha seṣudhi

There he saw Panchali (Draupadi) and Dharma's son (Yudhishthira) seated together; even though he knew of the vow, he took up his bow and quiver.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.29.20)

sa gatvā taskarānājau nihatya nṛpanandanaḥ nivartya dhenuṁ tāṁ tasmai dadau viprāya sādaram

That son of the king, having gone and slain the thieves in battle, brought back the cow and gave it reverently to that Brahmin.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.29.21)

atha vijñāpayāmāsa phālguno dharmanandanam tīrthayātrā mayā kāryā samayollaṁghanāditi

Then Phalguna (Arjuna) informed Dharma's son that he must undertake a pilgrimage to sacred tirthas, since he had transgressed their agreed rule.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.29.22)

anujasya vacaḥ śrutvā sarvadharmavidāṁ varaḥ uvāca vacanaṁ dhīraḥ sādaraṁ dharmanaṁdanaḥ

Having heard his younger brother's words, Dharma's son, the foremost of all the knowers of dharma, being steadfast, spoke reverently these words:

Verse 23 (skanda.2.29.23)

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca gavārthaṁ brāhmaṇārthaṁ ca yadvadedanṛtaṁ vacaḥ yadācaredasatkarma tatsatyaṁ tatsamaṁjasam

Yudhishthira said: 'Whatever untrue word is spoken for the sake of a cow or a Brahmin, and whatever act otherwise improper is performed for their sake — that is truth, that is proper.

Verse 24 (skanda.2.29.24)

brāhmaṇārthaṁ gavārthaṁ ca tvayā karmedṛśaṁ kṛtam tadasadbhāvamāpnoti kathaṁ kathaya suvrata

You performed such an act for the sake of a Brahmin and a cow — how, tell me, O keeper of good vows, could that incur any wrongdoing?

Verse 25 (skanda.2.29.25)

prajāpālanakṛtyasya coropekṣaṇaśikṣaṇaiḥ nūnaṁ phalaṁ bhavedrājño brahmahatyāśvamedhajam

By overlooking and failing to check thieves in the duty of protecting his subjects, a king would surely reap the fruit of killing a Brahmin, even from performing the Ashvamedha sacrifice.

Verse 26 (skanda.2.29.26)

asādhyānvairiṇo jñātvā'pyavanīśo na bhadrabhāk svadeśopaplavakarāstaskarā yadyaśikṣitāḥ

A king who, knowing his enemies to be unassailable, does not attain good fortune, and if thieves who disturb his own country go unchecked and untrained —

Verse 27 (skanda.2.29.27)

asmākaṁ bhūbhujāṁ lokajālasya ca hitaṁ hi yat tvayedṛśaṁ kṛtaṁ karma nāsti doṣo hyatastava

it is for the good of us kings and of the whole web of the people that you have performed such an act; therefore there is no fault in you on this account.'

Verse 28 (skanda.2.29.28)

śrīsūta uvāca dharmaputrasya vacanamākarṇya racitāṁjaliḥ punarvijñāpayāmāsa dharmanityo dhanaṁjayaḥ

Shri Suta said: Having heard the words of Dharma's son, Dhananjaya, ever devoted to dharma, with joined palms, again submitted his request:

Verse 29 (skanda.2.29.29)

arjuna uvāca maivaṁ bhūpāla vādīstvaṁ svapratijñātilaṁghanam jānatā dharmasarvasvamullasaddharmamūrtinā

Arjuna said: 'Do not speak thus, O king — [saying there was no transgression] — of the violation of one's own vow, when it is you yourself who know the whole substance of dharma, the very embodiment of shining dharma,

Verse 30 (skanda.2.29.30)

kṛtyākṛtyavidā dakṣeṇātmanā prāksamīritā nollaṁghanīyā satataṁ pratijñā puruṣeṇa hi

skilled and knowing what should and should not be done, who long ago declared that a man should never at any time transgress a vow he has himself proclaimed.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.29.31)

aśaktānāṁ gatiḥ seyaṁ yadbaṁdhuguruvākyataḥ dharmaṁ tyajaṁti samayaṁ tyaktāḥ prāksvaṁ samīritam

This is indeed the recourse of the weak — that at the word of kinsmen or elders they abandon dharma, having earlier abandoned the agreement they themselves declared.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.29.32)

kṛpayā tīrthagamanādāryo yadi nivartayet hatapratijñaṁ māṁ lokāñjalpataḥ ko nivārayet

If, out of compassion, you, being noble, should turn me back from going on this pilgrimage, who could then restrain the people from saying that my vow has been broken?

Verse 33 (skanda.2.29.33)

mamāpi tīrthayātrāyāṁ kautukottaralaṁ manaḥ kartavyaṁ ca smṛtaṁ rājannāradādiṣṭaśāsanam

My own mind, too, is filled with eagerness for the pilgrimage to sacred tirthas; and, O king, remember it is a duty enjoined by Narada's own instruction.

Verse 34 (skanda.2.29.34)

tatprasīda mahārāja yattīrthagamanodyame saṁmānanīyaḥ prabhubhiḥ samayo hyanujīvinām

Therefore be gracious, O great king, in this undertaking of pilgrimage — for the agreement of dependents deserves to be honoured by their masters.'

Verse 35 (skanda.2.29.35)

tatheti bhrātṛbhiḥ sārddhaṁ kṛtānumatirarjunaḥ agrajaṁ toṣayāmāsa praṇāmapraśrayādibhiḥ

'So be it,' said Arjuna, and having obtained the consent of his brothers, he pleased his elder brother with prostrations and deference.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.29.36)

yathārhaṁ bhīmasenādīnbhrātṝnāmantrya pāṇḍavaḥ kṛtasvastyayano bhavyairniryayau dharaṇīsuraiḥ

Having duly taken leave of Bhimasena and his other brothers, the Pandava, blessed with auspicious rites by the excellent Brahmins, set out.

Verse 37 (skanda.2.29.37)

paurāṇikā jyautiṣikā bhiṣajo dharaṇīsurāḥ anujagmurbhṛtyagaṇāḥ śilpinaḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ

Reciters of the Puranas, astrologers, physicians, and Brahmins followed after him, along with his retinue of servants, craftsmen, bards, and chroniclers.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.29.38)

yudhiṣṭhirājñayā tasya bhogatyāgakṣamaṁ dhanam gṛhītvānuyayuḥ snigdhāḥ sabhyāḥ kośādhikāriṇaḥ

By Yudhishthira's command, affectionate courtiers, assembly-members, and treasury officials, having taken wealth sufficient for both enjoyment and giving away, accompanied him.

Verse 39 (skanda.2.29.39)

sa rājaputraḥ prathamaṁ prāpya bhāgīrathīṁ nadīm gaṁgādvāraṁ prayāgaṁ ca siṣeve kāśikāmapi

That prince, having first reached the river Bhagirathi (Ganga), resorted to Gangadwar, to Prayaga, and also to Kashi,

Verse 40 (skanda.2.29.40)

paśyaṁstīrthāni jāhnavyāstattīropāntavartmanā āsasāda samuttuṅgakallolaṁ dakṣiṇodadhim

beholding the tirthas along the path near the bank of the Jahnavi (Ganga), he reached the southern ocean with its towering waves,

Verse 41 (skanda.2.29.41)

mahānadīṁ mahāpuṇyāṁ prasiddhaṁ puruṣottamam siṁhācalaṁ ca saṁvīkṣya prāptavānkṛtakṛtyatām

and having beheld the great and greatly meritorious river, and the famed Purushottama (Puri/Jagannath), and Simhachalam, he attained a sense of fulfilment.

Verse 42 (skanda.2.29.42)

tato dadarśa kaunteyaḥ puṇyāṁ godāvarīṁ nadīm samastaduritavrātaśātanottīrṇagauravām

Then the son of Kunti beheld the meritorious river Godavari, whose glory surpasses the destruction of the whole mass of sin.

Verse 43 (skanda.2.29.43)

kṛtābhiṣekastattoyairvidhivatpāṇḍunandanaḥ pramodaṁ vividhairdānairakarodbhūsuvarṇakaiḥ

The son of Pandu, having duly performed ablution in its waters according to rule, brought about great joy through various gifts of land and gold.

Verse 44 (skanda.2.29.44)

nadīṁ malāpahākhyāṁ ca dṛṣṭvā modaṁ yayau śubham tataḥ samāsasādāsau kṛṣṇaveṇīṁ saridvarām

Having beheld the river named Malapaha (remover of impurity), he went away in auspicious joy; then he came to the excellent river Krishnaveni,

Verse 45 (skanda.2.29.45)

śivasya niyatāvāsaṁ caturdvārasamanvitam nānātīrthagaṇākīrṇaṁ śrīparvatamavaikṣata

and beheld Shri Parvata, the fixed abode of Shiva, furnished with four gateways, thronged with hosts of various tirthas.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.29.46)

nadīṁ pinākinīṁ tīrtvā gatvā devarṣisevitam nārāyaṇapriyāvāsamapaśyadveṁkaṭācalam

Having crossed the river Pinakini, and having gone on, he beheld Venkatachala, served by gods and sages, the beloved abode of Narayana.

Verse 47 (skanda.2.29.47)
