Verse 1 (skanda.2.36.1)
bharadvāja uvāca purā niśātyaye dhātuḥ prabuddho madhusūdanaḥ punaḥ pravṛttiṁ bhūtānāmanviyeṣa dhiyā bhṛśam
Bharadvaja said: Long ago, at the end of the cosmic night, Madhusudana awoke and with his mind intently sought again the means for the fresh activity of beings.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.36.2)
vinā vasumatīmanye bhūtaughadharaṇakṣamāḥ na bhavantīti hṛdaye tarkastasyājaniṣṭa ca
The thought arose in his heart: "Without the earth, nothing else is capable of supporting the mass of beings."
Verse 3 (skanda.2.36.3)
apaśyatpraṇidhānena mahīṁ pātālagocarām atimātrabhayodvignāṁ parītāṁ mahatāmbunā
Through meditation he saw the earth sunk into the netherworld, exceedingly agitated with fear, and surrounded by a vast expanse of water.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.36.4)
pratipede tadā rūpaṁ bhūsamuddharaṇocitam upakarmoṣṭhamanalajihvaṁ praṇavaghoṣaṇam
Then he assumed a form fit for lifting up the earth — with lips suited to the sacrificial rite, a tongue like fire, and resounding with the syllable Om.
Verse 5 (skanda.2.36.5)

Verse 6 (skanda.2.36.6)

pravargyāvartasaṁpannaṁ dakṣiṇāgnyudarānvitam sruktuṇḍamakhilaiḥ sarvaiḥ saṁvibhaktāṁgasandhikam
Endowed with the Pravargya rite as its curls, the southern sacrificial fire as its belly, its snout formed like the sacrificial ladle, and its limb-joints all distinctly formed of every element of sacrifice.
Verse 7 (skanda.2.36.7)
divyasūktasaṭājālaṁ paratrahmaśirastathā havyakavyarayopetaṁ viśuddhapaśujānukam
With the divine Vedic hymns as its mane, the Supreme Brahman as its head, endowed with the swift flow of oblations to gods and ancestors, and its knees formed of the purified sacrificial animal.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.36.8)
uktātyuktādikacchandomārgamaṁtra balānvitam sarvayajñamayaṁ divyaṁ vārāhaṁ rūpamāsthitaḥ
Endowed with the strength of the mantra-paths of the Ukta, Atyukta and other Vedic metres, he assumed that divine Boar form made wholly of sacrifice.
Verse 9 (skanda.2.36.9)
