The Manifestation of Sri Venkatesha, Pleased by the Austerities of Agastya and Shankha
Verse 1 (skanda.2.38.1)
भरद्वाज उवाच । तेषां हरौ जगन्नाथे समावेशितचेतसाम् । दिनत्रयं गतं तत्र पूजास्तोत्रपरात्मनाम् ।
bharadvāja uvāca teṣāṁ harau jagannāthe samāveśitacetasām dinatrayaṁ gataṁ tatra pūjāstotraparātmanām
Bharadvaja said: For them, their minds fixed upon Hari, Lord of the world, three days passed there, absorbed in worship and hymns.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.38.2)
तृतीये दिवसे प्राप्ते ते सर्वे निद्रिता निशि । अन्ते चतुर्थयामस्य ददृशुः स्वप्नमुत्तमम् ।
tṛtīye divase prāpte te sarve nidritā niśi ante caturthayāmasya dadṛśuḥ svapnamuttamam
When the third day arrived, all of them, asleep at night, at the end of the fourth watch, beheld an excellent dream.
Verse 3 (skanda.2.38.3)
शङ्खचक्रगदापाणिं प्रसन्नं पुरुषोत्तमम् । वरदानाय संप्राप्तमपश्यन्स्मेरलोचनम् ।
śaṅkhacakragadāpāṇiṁ prasannaṁ puruṣottamam varadānāya saṁprāptamapaśyansmeralocanam
They saw the Supreme Person, holding conch, discus, and mace, gracious, with smiling eyes, having come to grant boons.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.38.4)
उत्थाय मुदितात्मानो गृहान्निर्गत्य पावने । स्वामिपुष्करिणीतोये सस्नुर्विधिवदादरात् ।
utthāya muditātmāno gṛhānnirgatya pāvane svāmipuṣkariṇītoye sasnurvidhivadādarāt
Rising with joyful hearts, going out of their dwellings, they bathed reverently and according to rite in the sacred waters of Svami Pushkarini.
Verse 5 (skanda.2.38.5)
विधाय विधिवत्कर्म सर्वे दिनमुखोचितम् । गृहान्प्रत्याययुर्देवमाराधयितुमच्युतम् ।
vidhāya vidhivatkarma sarve dinamukhocitam gṛhānpratyāyayurdevamārādhayitumacyutam
Having duly performed the rites fit for the beginning of the day, all returned home to worship the imperishable Lord.
Verse 6 (skanda.2.38.6)
सद्यः श्रेयस्करं मार्गे निमित्तं पक्षिसृचितम् । दृष्ट्वा प्रसादं देवस्य करस्थं मेनिरे तदा ।
sadyaḥ śreyaskaraṁ mārge nimittaṁ pakṣisṛcitam dṛṣṭvā prasādaṁ devasya karasthaṁ menire tadā
Seeing on the way an omen indicated by birds, immediately auspicious, they then considered the grace of the Lord to be within their grasp.
Verse 7 (skanda.2.38.7)
ततस्त्रिलोककर्तारं पूजयित्वा जनार्दनम् । तुष्टुवुर्विविधैः स्तोत्रैः पवित्रैर्वेदवर्णितैः ।
tatastrilokakartāraṁ pūjayitvā janārdanam tuṣṭuvurvividhaiḥ stotraiḥ pavitrairvedavarṇitaiḥ
Then, having worshipped Janardana, the Creator of the three worlds, they praised him with various sacred hymns described in the Vedas.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.38.8)
स्तोत्रावसाने कौन्तेय मुनीन्द्रः कुम्भसंभवः । जजाप शंखसहितो मन्त्रमष्टाक्षरं हरेः ।
stotrāvasāne kaunteya munīndraḥ kumbhasaṁbhavaḥ jajāpa śaṁkhasahito mantramaṣṭākṣaraṁ hareḥ
At the end of the hymn, O son of Kunti, the lord of sages, the Pot-born one, together with Shankha, repeated the eight-syllabled mantra of Hari.
Verse 9 (skanda.2.38.9)
इत्थं तेषां जगत्स्वामिन्यच्युतेऽर्पितचेतसाम् । अग्रभागे प्रादुरभूदेकं तेजो महाद्भुतम् ।
itthaṁ teṣāṁ jagatsvāminyacyute'rpitacetasām agrabhāge prādurabhūdekaṁ tejo mahādbhutam
Thus, while their minds were offered up to the imperishable Lord of the universe, before them there appeared a single, most wondrous radiance.
Verse 10 (skanda.2.38.10)
अनेककोटिसंख्यानामादित्येन्दु हविर्भुजाम् । एकीभूयाम्बरतले ज्योतिर्जालमिव स्थितम् ।
anekakoṭisaṁkhyānāmādityendu havirbhujām ekībhūyāmbaratale jyotirjālamiva sthitam
As if the light of many crores of suns, moons, and fires had merged into one, standing like a net of light in the vault of the sky.
Verse 11 (skanda.2.38.11)
तत्तेजो वीक्ष्य ते सर्वेऽमितान्ताश्चर्यगोचराः । दध्युर्नारायणं दिव्यं परमानन्दविग्रहम् ।
tattejo vīkṣya te sarve'mitāntāścaryagocarāḥ dadhyurnārāyaṇaṁ divyaṁ paramānandavigraham
Beholding that radiance, all of them, overwhelmed with boundless wonder, meditated on the divine Narayana, whose form is supreme bliss,
Verse 12 (skanda.2.38.12)
वाङ्मानसपथातीतं विश्रुतैश्वर्यभासुरम् । सहस्रनेत्रं साहस्रबाहुपादैः समन्वितम् ।
vāṅmānasapathātītaṁ viśrutaiśvaryabhāsuram sahasranetraṁ sāhasrabāhupādaiḥ samanvitam
who is beyond the reach of speech and mind, radiant with renowned majesty, thousand-eyed, endowed with a thousand arms and feet,
Verse 13 (skanda.2.38.13)
तप्तकार्तस्वरनिभस्फुरत्कांतिमनोहरम । दंष्ट्राकरालं दुर्दर्शं वमन्तं दहनच्छटाः ।
taptakārtasvaranibhasphuratkāṁtimanoharama daṁṣṭrākarālaṁ durdarśaṁ vamantaṁ dahanacchaṭāḥ
charming with a splendor gleaming like molten gold, terrible with fangs, hard to behold, vomiting forth blazes of fire,
Verse 14 (skanda.2.38.14)
कौस्तुभेन विराजन्तं दधानमुरसि श्रियम् । अविचिन्त्यमनाद्यन्तमत्यन्तभयदायकम् ।
kaustubhena virājantaṁ dadhānamurasi śriyam avicintyamanādyantamatyantabhayadāyakam
resplendent with the Kaustubha jewel, bearing Shri upon his breast, inconceivable, without beginning or end, exceedingly awe-inspiring,
Verse 15 (skanda.2.38.15)
प्रकाशयन्तं ब्रह्माण्डं सर्वमात्मनि सर्वगम् । अगस्त्यशंखप्रमुखास्ते सर्वे हृष्टचेतसः ।
prakāśayantaṁ brahmāṇḍaṁ sarvamātmani sarvagam agastyaśaṁkhapramukhāste sarve hṛṣṭacetasaḥ
illuminating the whole universe, containing all within himself, all-pervading — Agastya, Shankha, and all the others, with joyful hearts,
Verse 16 (skanda.2.38.16)
तमालोक्य जगन्नाथं भूयोभूयो ववन्दिरे । भ्रमन्ति लोकरक्षार्थमायुधानि तदा हरेः ।
tamālokya jagannāthaṁ bhūyobhūyo vavandire bhramanti lokarakṣārthamāyudhāni tadā hareḥ
beholding that Lord of the universe, bowed to him again and again. Then Hari's weapons moved about for the protection of the worlds,
Verse 17 (skanda.2.38.17)
निजतेजोबलोपेतान्याजग्मुस्तं निषेवितुम् । चक्रमर्कप्रभं दिव्या गदा खङ्गश्च नन्दकः ।
nijatejobalopetānyājagmustaṁ niṣevitum cakramarkaprabhaṁ divyā gadā khaṅgaśca nandakaḥ
endowed with their own splendor and power, they came to attend upon him — the discus, radiant as the sun, the divine mace, the sword Nandaka,
Verse 18 (skanda.2.38.18)
पुण्डरीकं चोग्ररवः पाञ्चजन्यः शशिप्रभः । तदा ब्रह्माण्डमखिलं पूरयामास निर्भरः ।
puṇḍarīkaṁ cograravaḥ pāñcajanyaḥ śaśiprabhaḥ tadā brahmāṇḍamakhilaṁ pūrayāmāsa nirbharaḥ
the bow Sharnga, and the conch Panchajanya of fierce sound and moonlike splendor; then it filled the entire universe abundantly,
Verse 19 (skanda.2.38.19)
पाञ्चजन्यस्य निनदः सर्वासुरभयंकरः । पाञ्चजन्यध्वनिं श्रुत्वा नितान्ताश्चर्यभीषणम् ।
pāñcajanyasya ninadaḥ sarvāsurabhayaṁkaraḥ pāñcajanyadhvaniṁ śrutvā nitāntāścaryabhīṣaṇam
the blast of Panchajanya, terrifying to all demons; hearing the sound of Panchajanya, utterly astonishing and fearsome,
Verse 20 (skanda.2.38.20)
आययुर्देवताः सर्वाः स्वंस्वं वाहनमास्थिताः । ब्रह्मा रुद्रः शतमखः सनकाद्याश्च योगिनः ।
āyayurdevatāḥ sarvāḥ svaṁsvaṁ vāhanamāsthitāḥ brahmā rudraḥ śatamakhaḥ sanakādyāśca yoginaḥ
all the gods came, each mounted on his own vehicle — Brahma, Rudra, Indra, and Sanaka and the other yogis,
Verse 21 (skanda.2.38.21)
वसिष्ठमुख्या मुनयो गन्धर्वोरगकिन्नराः । विष्वक्सेनो गरुत्मांश्च विष्णुभृत्या जयादयः ।
vasiṣṭhamukhyā munayo gandharvoragakinnarāḥ viṣvakseno garutmāṁśca viṣṇubhṛtyā jayādayaḥ
the sages headed by Vasishtha, Gandharvas, serpents, Kinnaras, Vishvaksena, Garuda, and Vishnu's attendants headed by Jaya,
Verse 22 (skanda.2.38.22)
सरूपाश्चैव ये नित्याः श्वेतद्वीपनिवासिनः । सुमनोद्रुमसंभूता सुमनोवृष्टिरद्भुता ।
sarūpāścaiva ye nityāḥ śvetadvīpanivāsinaḥ sumanodrumasaṁbhūtā sumanovṛṣṭiradbhutā
and the eternal ones of like form who dwell on Shvetadvipa. A wondrous shower of flowers, sprung from the celestial trees,
Verse 23 (skanda.2.38.23)
पपात मेदुरामोदमोदिताशेषमानसा । ननृतुर्दिव्यसुदृशो जगुः किन्नरपुङ्गवाः ।
papāta medurāmodamoditāśeṣamānasā nanṛturdivyasudṛśo jaguḥ kinnarapuṅgavāḥ
fell down, its rich fragrance delighting every mind; the beautiful celestial women danced, and the finest of Kinnaras sang.
Verse 24 (skanda.2.38.24)
तुष्टुवुर्हर्षतरलाः सुरगन्धर्वचारणाः । दृष्ट्वा ते पुण्डरीकाक्षं प्रसन्नं भक्तवत्सलम् ।
tuṣṭuvurharṣataralāḥ suragandharvacāraṇāḥ dṛṣṭvā te puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ prasannaṁ bhaktavatsalam
The gods, Gandharvas, and Charanas, trembling with joy, praised him; beholding the lotus-eyed one, gracious, affectionate to his devotees,
Verse 25 (skanda.2.38.25)
प्रणम्य तोषयामासुः साष्टांगं विविधैस्तवैः ।
praṇamya toṣayāmāsuḥ sāṣṭāṁgaṁ vividhaistavaiḥ
they prostrated with all eight limbs and gratified him with various hymns of praise.
Verse 26 (skanda.2.38.26)
ब्रह्मादय ऊचुः । जय विष्णो कृपासिन्धो जय तामरसेक्षण । जय लोकैकवरद जय भक्तार्तिभञ्जन ।
brahmādaya ūcuḥ jaya viṣṇo kṛpāsindho jaya tāmarasekṣaṇa jaya lokaikavarada jaya bhaktārtibhañjana
Brahma and the others said: Victory to you, O Vishnu, Ocean of Compassion! Victory, O lotus-eyed one! Victory, O sole bestower of boons to the worlds! Victory, O destroyer of the devotees' afflictions!
Verse 27 (skanda.2.38.27)
अनन्तमक्षरं शान्तमवाङ्मनसगोचरम् । को वा भवन्तं जानाति चिदानन्दमयात्मकम् ।
anantamakṣaraṁ śāntamavāṅmanasagocaram ko vā bhavantaṁ jānāti cidānandamayātmakam
Infinite, imperishable, tranquil, beyond the reach of speech and mind — who indeed can know you, whose very self is consciousness and bliss?
Verse 28 (skanda.2.38.28)
अणोरणुतरं स्थूलात्स्थूलं सर्वान्तरस्थितम् । त्वामामनन्ति पुरुषं प्रकृतेः परमच्युतम् ।
aṇoraṇutaraṁ sthūlātsthūlaṁ sarvāntarasthitam tvāmāmananti puruṣaṁ prakṛteḥ paramacyutam
Subtler than the subtlest, grosser than the grossest, abiding within all — they proclaim you as the Person, imperishable and beyond Prakriti.
Verse 29 (skanda.2.38.29)
वेदान्तसाररूपं त्वां सर्वान्तर्बाह्यवर्तिनम् । को हि वर्णयितुं शक्तो मायायत्तेषु देहिषु ।
vedāntasārarūpaṁ tvāṁ sarvāntarbāhyavartinam ko hi varṇayituṁ śakto māyāyatteṣu dehiṣu
You, whose form is the essence of the Vedanta, who dwell within and without all — who indeed among embodied beings subject to Maya is capable of describing you?
Verse 30 (skanda.2.38.30)
भवदीयमिदं रूपं दृष्ट्वातिभयदायकम् । भयोद्विग्ना वयं सर्वे शान्तं रूपं भजस्व ह ।
bhavadīyamidaṁ rūpaṁ dṛṣṭvātibhayadāyakam bhayodvignā vayaṁ sarve śāntaṁ rūpaṁ bhajasva ha
Having seen this exceedingly awe-inspiring form of yours, we are all agitated with fear — pray, assume a peaceful form.
Verse 31 (skanda.2.38.31)
भरद्वाज उवाच । इति स्तुतो विरिञ्चाद्यैः प्रसन्नो गरुडध्वजः । मेघघोषप्रतिमया वाचा सादरमब्रवीत ।
bharadvāja uvāca iti stuto viriñcādyaiḥ prasanno garuḍadhvajaḥ meghaghoṣapratimayā vācā sādaramabravīta
Bharadvaja said: Thus praised by Brahma and the others, the Garuda-bannered one, pleased, spoke reverently in a voice resembling the roar of clouds.
Verse 32 (skanda.2.38.32)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । भयावहामिमां मूर्तिमुत्सृज्याहं प्रियावहम् । शान्तं रूपं भजिष्यामि मां पश्यत निराकुलाः ।
śrībhagavānuvāca bhayāvahāmimāṁ mūrtimutsṛjyāhaṁ priyāvaham śāntaṁ rūpaṁ bhajiṣyāmi māṁ paśyata nirākulāḥ
The Blessed Lord said: Casting off this fear-inspiring form, I shall assume a pleasing, peaceful form; behold me without agitation.
Verse 33 (skanda.2.38.33)
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हितो भूत्वा तस्मिन्नेव क्षणांतरे । विमाने रत्नखचिते बभूव सुखदर्शनः ।
ityuktvāntarhito bhūtvā tasminneva kṣaṇāṁtare vimāne ratnakhacite babhūva sukhadarśanaḥ
Having said this, becoming invisible, in that very instant he appeared, delightful to behold, in a jeweled celestial chariot,
Verse 34 (skanda.2.38.34)
चन्द्रबिम्बाननः शान्तो नीलोत्पलदलद्युतिः । सुवर्णवर्णवसनो रत्नभूषणभूषितः ।
candrabimbānanaḥ śānto nīlotpaladaladyutiḥ suvarṇavarṇavasano ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣitaḥ
his face like the orb of the moon, tranquil, with the radiance of a blue lotus petal, wearing golden-hued garments, adorned with jeweled ornaments,
Verse 35 (skanda.2.38.35)
शंखचक्रगदापद्मलसत्करचतुष्टयः । तमालोक्य रमाकान्तं भूयो भूयो ववंदिरे ।
śaṁkhacakragadāpadmalasatkaracatuṣṭayaḥ tamālokya ramākāntaṁ bhūyo bhūyo vavaṁdire
his four hands gleaming with conch, discus, mace, and lotus. Beholding that Beloved of Lakshmi, they bowed again and again.
Verse 36 (skanda.2.38.36)
सन्तोषयित्वा ब्रह्मादीनभीष्टप्रतिपादनैः । अवोचद्विनयानम्रमगस्त्यं मुनिपुंगवम् ।
santoṣayitvā brahmādīnabhīṣṭapratipādanaiḥ avocadvinayānamramagastyaṁ munipuṁgavam
Having gratified Brahma and the others by granting their desires, he spoke to Agastya, that bull among sages, bowed low in humility.
Verse 37 (skanda.2.38.37)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । त्वं मुनीन्द्र व्रतैर्घोरैश्चीर्णैर्मां प्रति संप्रति । परिक्लिष्टोऽसि दास्यामि वरांस्तेऽभीप्सितान्वद ।
śrībhagavānuvāca tvaṁ munīndra vratairghoraiścīrṇairmāṁ prati saṁprati parikliṣṭo'si dāsyāmi varāṁste'bhīpsitānvada
The Blessed Lord said: O lord of sages, you have wearied yourself with terrible vows performed toward Me; I shall grant you boons — speak your desires.
Verse 38 (skanda.2.38.38)
भरद्वाज उवाच । निशम्य वाक्यं श्रीभर्तुः प्रणम्य च पुनःपुनः । स रोमाञ्चितसर्वांगः कुम्भजन्मा वचोऽब्रवीत् ।
bharadvāja uvāca niśamya vākyaṁ śrībhartuḥ praṇamya ca punaḥpunaḥ sa romāñcitasarvāṁgaḥ kumbhajanmā vaco'bravīt
Bharadvaja said: Hearing the words of the Lord of Shri, and bowing again and again, the Pot-born one, his whole body thrilling with rapture, spoke these words:
Verse 39 (skanda.2.38.39)
अगस्त्य उवाच । यद्धुतं यत्तपस्तप्तं यदधीतं श्रुतं मया । तत्सर्वं सफलं जातमादृतोऽस्मि यतस्त्वया ।
agastya uvāca yaddhutaṁ yattapastaptaṁ yadadhītaṁ śrutaṁ mayā tatsarvaṁ saphalaṁ jātamādṛto'smi yatastvayā
Agastya said: Whatever oblations I have offered, whatever austerity I have practiced, whatever I have studied and heard — all of it has borne fruit, since I have been honored by you.
Verse 40 (skanda.2.38.40)
एषोऽहमेव धर्मात्मा त्रिषु लोकेष्वपि प्रभो । त्वां विचिन्वन्तमधुना मामन्विष्यागतोऽसि यत् ।
eṣo'hameva dharmātmā triṣu lokeṣvapi prabho tvāṁ vicinvantamadhunā māmanviṣyāgato'si yat
I myself am indeed righteous in the three worlds, O Lord, in that, while I was searching for you, you have now come seeking me out.
Verse 41 (skanda.2.38.41)
त्वत्प्रसादात्पुरैवाहं प्राप्ताखिलमनोरथः । न पश्यामि विचिन्त्यापि प्राप्यं संप्रति माधव ।
tvatprasādātpuraivāhaṁ prāptākhilamanorathaḥ na paśyāmi vicintyāpi prāpyaṁ saṁprati mādhava
By your grace I had already, long before, obtained every desire of my heart; even upon reflection, I see nothing more to be attained now, O Madhava.
Verse 42 (skanda.2.38.42)
तथापि चापलादेतत्तव विज्ञाप्यते प्रभो । त्वत्पादाम्बुजयोर्भक्तिमेवं कुरु निरन्तरम् ।
tathāpi cāpalādetattava vijñāpyate prabho tvatpādāmbujayorbhaktimevaṁ kuru nirantaram
Yet even so, out of eagerness, this is submitted to you, O Lord: grant me unbroken devotion to your lotus feet, thus.
Verse 43 (skanda.2.38.43)
अवधारय चैतत्त्वं सुरप्रार्थनया मया । नदी सुवर्णमुखरी स्नाताघौघविनाशिनी ।
avadhāraya caitattvaṁ suraprārthanayā mayā nadī suvarṇamukharī snātāghaughavināśinī
And know this too, which I present at the request of the gods: the river Suvarnamukhari, which destroys the mass of sins of those who bathe in it,
Verse 44 (skanda.2.38.44)
सा भवच्छैलकटकसमासन्ना समागता । तां कृतार्थय लोकेश त्वदनुग्रहवृत्तिभिः ।
sā bhavacchailakaṭakasamāsannā samāgatā tāṁ kṛtārthaya lokeśa tvadanugrahavṛttibhiḥ
has come near to the slopes of your mountain; make her fulfilled, O Lord of the worlds, through the working of your grace.
Verse 45 (skanda.2.38.45)
सुवर्णमुखरीतोये स्नात्वा ये वेंकटे स्थितम् । पश्यंति भुक्तिमुक्त्योस्तु भूयासुर्भाजनानि ते ।
suvarṇamukharītoye snātvā ye veṁkaṭe sthitam paśyaṁti bhuktimuktyostu bhūyāsurbhājanāni te
May those who, having bathed in the waters of the Suvarnamukhari, behold you dwelling on Venkata, become vessels of both worldly enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 46 (skanda.2.38.46)
अल्पायुषो नरा मूढा ज्ञानयोगपरिच्युताः । न शक्नुवंति त्वां द्रष्टुं व्रताध्ययनकर्मभिः ।
alpāyuṣo narā mūḍhā jñānayogaparicyutāḥ na śaknuvaṁti tvāṁ draṣṭuṁ vratādhyayanakarmabhiḥ
Men of short life, deluded, deprived of the yoga of knowledge, are unable to behold you through vows, study, or other rites.
Verse 47 (skanda.2.38.47)
सदास्मिन्नास्थितः शैले सर्वेषां च जगद्गुरो । प्रसादसुमुखो देव कांक्षितार्थप्रदो भव ।
sadāsminnāsthitaḥ śaile sarveṣāṁ ca jagadguro prasādasumukho deva kāṁkṣitārthaprado bhava
Ever abiding on this mountain, O Guru of the worlds, be gracious of countenance and grant the desired boon to all.
Verse 48 (skanda.2.38.48)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । यत्प्रार्थितं त्वया विप्र तत्तथैव भविष्यति । नूनमप्रतिमा लोके मयि भक्तिः कृता त्वया ।
śrībhagavānuvāca yatprārthitaṁ tvayā vipra tattathaiva bhaviṣyati nūnamapratimā loke mayi bhaktiḥ kṛtā tvayā
The Blessed Lord said: What you have prayed for, O brahmin, shall come to pass exactly so; truly, you have shown me devotion unmatched in the world.
Verse 49 (skanda.2.38.49)
जाह्नवीव नदी सेयं सुवर्णमुखरी मुने । स्यादाशास्या सुराणां च वांछितश्रीविधायिनी ।
jāhnavīva nadī seyaṁ suvarṇamukharī mune syādāśāsyā surāṇāṁ ca vāṁchitaśrīvidhāyinī
This river Suvarnamukhari, O sage, shall become, like the Ganga, one to be longed for even by the gods, granting the fortune one desires.
Verse 50 (skanda.2.38.50)
स्वामिपुष्करिणी चेयं नदी मूर्त्या समन्विता । संक्रमिष्यति तां दिव्यां नदीं तीर्थौघसंश्रयाम् ।
svāmipuṣkariṇī ceyaṁ nadī mūrtyā samanvitā saṁkramiṣyati tāṁ divyāṁ nadīṁ tīrthaughasaṁśrayām
And this Svami Pushkarini, endowed with her own personified form, shall merge into that divine river, the confluence of a multitude of sacred fords.
Verse 51 (skanda.2.38.51)
वैकुण्ठनाम्नि शैलेऽस्मिन्नद्यप्रभृति सर्वदा । कृतावासो भविष्यामि मुने प्रार्थनया तव ।
vaikuṇṭhanāmni śaile'sminnadyaprabhṛti sarvadā kṛtāvāso bhaviṣyāmi mune prārthanayā tava
On this mountain named Vaikuntha, from today onward, forever, I shall dwell, O sage, by your entreaty.
Verse 52 (skanda.2.38.52)
सुवर्णमुखरीस्नानक्षालिताघौघकर्दमाः । अस्मिन्वैकुण्ठशैले मां ये पश्यंति समाहिताः ।
suvarṇamukharīsnānakṣālitāghaughakardamāḥ asminvaikuṇṭhaśaile māṁ ye paśyaṁti samāhitāḥ
Those whose mire of accumulated sin has been washed away by bathing in the Suvarnamukhari, who, composed in mind, behold me on this Vaikuntha mountain,
Verse 53 (skanda.2.38.53)
भुवि पुत्रादिसंपन्नाः सर्वैश्वर्यसमन्विताः । मृतास्त्रिविष्टपे भोगानाकल्पमनुभूय च ।
bhuvi putrādisaṁpannāḥ sarvaiśvaryasamanvitāḥ mṛtāstriviṣṭape bhogānākalpamanubhūya ca
shall on earth be blessed with sons and endowed with every prosperity; and after death, having enjoyed pleasures in heaven for a whole aeon,
Verse 54 (skanda.2.38.54)
पुनरावृत्तिरहितं केवलानन्दभासुरम् । मत्पदं समवाप्स्यन्ति नात्र कार्या विचारणा ।
punarāvṛttirahitaṁ kevalānandabhāsuram matpadaṁ samavāpsyanti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
shall attain My abode, free from return, radiant with unalloyed bliss — there is no doubt to be entertained about this.
Verse 55 (skanda.2.38.55)
मां द्रष्टुमागतान्सर्वान्प्रतीक्ष्याभीप्सितैः शुभैः । योजयिष्यामि सततं त्वद्वचोगौरवान्मुने ।
māṁ draṣṭumāgatānsarvānpratīkṣyābhīpsitaiḥ śubhaiḥ yojayiṣyāmi satataṁ tvadvacogauravānmune
All who come to see Me, having awaited them, I shall constantly bless with the auspicious things they desire, out of respect for your word, O sage.
Verse 56 (skanda.2.38.56)
पुत्रार्थिनां बहून्पुत्रान्धनानि च धनार्थिनाम् । तथैवारोग्यकामानां रोगशांतिं गरीयसीम् ।
putrārthināṁ bahūnputrāndhanāni ca dhanārthinām tathaivārogyakāmānāṁ rogaśāṁtiṁ garīyasīm
Many sons to those who desire sons, wealth to those who desire wealth, and likewise, to those who desire health, complete freedom from disease,
Verse 57 (skanda.2.38.57)
तीव्रापत्परिभूतानां तथैवापन्निवारणम् । दास्याम्यभीप्सितान्भोगान्दुर्लभानपि सर्वदा ।
tīvrāpatparibhūtānāṁ tathaivāpannivāraṇam dāsyāmyabhīpsitānbhogāndurlabhānapi sarvadā
and likewise, to those overwhelmed by severe calamity, deliverance from calamity — I shall grant, always, the desired enjoyments, even those hard to obtain.
Verse 58 (skanda.2.38.58)
ये यान्कामानपेक्ष्येह प्रेक्षन्ते मां समागताः । अवाप्नुवन्ति ते सर्वे तांस्तान्कामान्न संशयः ।
ye yānkāmānapekṣyeha prekṣante māṁ samāgatāḥ avāpnuvanti te sarve tāṁstānkāmānna saṁśayaḥ
Whatever desires they hold in mind when they come here to behold Me — all of them shall obtain those very desires, without doubt.
Verse 59 (skanda.2.38.59)
स्थिता वा यत्र कुत्रापि मां स्मरन्ति नरोत्तमाः । ते सर्वे वाञ्छितां सिद्धिं लभन्ते मत्प्रसादतः ।
sthitā vā yatra kutrāpi māṁ smaranti narottamāḥ te sarve vāñchitāṁ siddhiṁ labhante matprasādataḥ
Or wherever they may be, the best of men who remember Me — all of them attain their desired success through My grace.
Verse 60 (skanda.2.38.60)
भरद्वाज उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा तं मुनिं देवः शंखमालोक्य भूपतिम् । शृण्वतां ब्रह्ममुख्यानामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
bharadvāja uvāca ityuktvā taṁ muniṁ devaḥ śaṁkhamālokya bhūpatim śṛṇvatāṁ brahmamukhyānāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt
Bharadvaja said: Having said this to that sage, the God, looking upon King Shankha, spoke these words while Brahma and the others listened —
Verse 61 (skanda.2.38.61)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । प्रीतोऽस्मि शंख भक्त्या ते वृणीष्वाभीप्सितं वरम् । ददामि वरदोऽहं ते क्रशिष्ठस्य तपस्यतः ।
śrībhagavānuvāca prīto'smi śaṁkha bhaktyā te vṛṇīṣvābhīpsitaṁ varam dadāmi varado'haṁ te kraśiṣṭhasya tapasyataḥ
The Blessed Lord said: I am pleased, Shankha, by your devotion; choose the boon you desire. I, the bestower of boons, grant it to you, who have grown so thin with austerity.
Verse 62 (skanda.2.38.62)
शंख उवाच । न याचेऽन्यन्महाबाहो त्वत्पादाम्बुजसेवनात् । यां प्राप्नुवंति त्वद्भक्तास्तां याचे गतिमुत्तमाम् ।
śaṁkha uvāca na yāce'nyanmahābāho tvatpādāmbujasevanāt yāṁ prāpnuvaṁti tvadbhaktāstāṁ yāce gatimuttamām
Shankha said: O mighty-armed one, I ask nothing other than the service of your lotus feet; I ask for that supreme goal which your devotees attain.
Verse 63 (skanda.2.38.63)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । यत्प्रार्थितं त्वया शंख तत्तथैव भविष्यति । मत्सेवायोगभव्यानामलभ्यं किमु विद्यते ।
śrībhagavānuvāca yatprārthitaṁ tvayā śaṁkha tattathaiva bhaviṣyati matsevāyogabhavyānāmalabhyaṁ kimu vidyate
The Blessed Lord said: What you have prayed for, Shankha, shall come to pass exactly so; for those fit for the discipline of My service, what indeed is unattainable?
Verse 64 (skanda.2.38.64)
आकल्पमिन्द्रलोकस्थो ह्यप्सरोगणसेवितः । भुक्त्वा बहुविधान्भोगांस्ततो मल्लोकमेष्यसि ।
ākalpamindralokastho hyapsarogaṇasevitaḥ bhuktvā bahuvidhānbhogāṁstato mallokameṣyasi
For a full aeon, dwelling in the world of Indra, served by hosts of Apsarases, having enjoyed manifold pleasures, you shall thereafter come to My world.
Verse 65 (skanda.2.38.65)
एवं ददौ वरानिष्टाञ्छङ्खाय पृथिवीपते । नारायणो जगद्योनिर्भजतां कल्पभूरुहः ।
evaṁ dadau varāniṣṭāñchaṅkhāya pṛthivīpate nārāyaṇo jagadyonirbhajatāṁ kalpabhūruhaḥ
Thus Narayana, the source of the universe, the wish-fulfilling tree for his devotees, gave King Shankha the desired boons, O lord of the earth.
Verse 66 (skanda.2.38.66)
ततो ब्रह्मादिकान्सर्वान्विसृज्य कमलेक्षणः । संस्तूय मानसैर्भक्त्या तत्रैवांतर्दधे प्रभुः ।
tato brahmādikānsarvānvisṛjya kamalekṣaṇaḥ saṁstūya mānasairbhaktyā tatraivāṁtardadhe prabhuḥ
Then, having dismissed Brahma and all the others, the lotus-eyed Lord, being praised by them with heartfelt devotion, vanished from sight right there.
Verse 67 (skanda.2.38.67)
भरद्वाज उवाच । वेंकटाद्रेः प्रभावोऽयमाख्यातो भवतेऽर्जुन । नराः पापैः प्रमुच्यंते श्रुत्वेमां पावनीं कथाम् ।
bharadvāja uvāca veṁkaṭādreḥ prabhāvo'yamākhyāto bhavate'rjuna narāḥ pāpaiḥ pramucyaṁte śrutvemāṁ pāvanīṁ kathām
Bharadvaja said: This is the glory of Venkatadri as related to you, O Arjuna; men are freed from sins by hearing this purifying story.
Verse 68 (skanda.2.38.68)
वाराहं रूपमुत्सृज्य ब्रह्मणाभ्यर्थितो हरिः । मुमोदात्राद्भुताकारो मायया मोहयञ्जगत् ।
vārāhaṁ rūpamutsṛjya brahmaṇābhyarthito hariḥ mumodātrādbhutākāro māyayā mohayañjagat
Having abandoned the Boar form, entreated by Brahma, Hari, of wondrous form, delighting there, bewilders the world with his Maya.
Verse 69 (skanda.2.38.69)
पश्चादगस्त्यशंखाभ्यां प्रार्थितः सुखदर्शनम् । ददौ नितान्तसुभगं शान्तं भोगात्मकं वपुः ।
paścādagastyaśaṁkhābhyāṁ prārthitaḥ sukhadarśanam dadau nitāntasubhagaṁ śāntaṁ bhogātmakaṁ vapuḥ
Afterward, entreated by Agastya and Shankha, he gave a delightful, exceedingly gracious, peaceful form of enjoyment, pleasing to behold.
Verse 70 (skanda.2.38.70)
नारायणं वेंकटाद्रिं स्वामिपुष्करिणीं तथा । इमामाख्यां च संस्मृत्य मुच्यंते पातकैर्जनाः ।
nārāyaṇaṁ veṁkaṭādriṁ svāmipuṣkariṇīṁ tathā imāmākhyāṁ ca saṁsmṛtya mucyaṁte pātakairjanāḥ
By remembering Narayana, Venkatadri, Svami Pushkarini, and this very account, people are freed from sins.
Verse 71 (skanda.2.38.71)
वेंकटाद्रिसमं स्थानं ब्रह्माण्डे नास्ति किञ्चन । वेंकटेशसमो देवो न भूतो न भविष्यति ।
veṁkaṭādrisamaṁ sthānaṁ brahmāṇḍe nāsti kiñcana veṁkaṭeśasamo devo na bhūto na bhaviṣyati
There is no place equal to Venkatadri anywhere in the universe; there has been and there will be no god equal to Venkatesha.
Verse 72 (skanda.2.38.72)
वेंकटाद्रिसमं स्थानं न भूतं न भविष्यति । स्वामितीर्थसरस्तुल्यं न कुत्रापि च विद्यते ।
veṁkaṭādrisamaṁ sthānaṁ na bhūtaṁ na bhaviṣyati svāmitīrthasarastulyaṁ na kutrāpi ca vidyate
There has been and there will be no place equal to Venkatadri; nor does there exist anywhere a lake equal to the Svami Tirtha.
Verse 73 (skanda.2.38.73)
प्रातरुत्थाय ये नित्यं वेंकटेशं स्मरंति वै । तेषां करस्था मोक्षश्रीर्नात्र कार्या विचारणा ।
prātarutthāya ye nityaṁ veṁkaṭeśaṁ smaraṁti vai teṣāṁ karasthā mokṣaśrīrnātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Those who, rising in the morning, constantly remember Venkatesha — for them liberation stands within their very grasp; no doubt need be entertained here.
Verse 74 (skanda.2.38.74)
स्वामिपुष्करिणीतीर्थे स्नात्वा सर्वात्मकं हरिम् । ये वा पश्यंति नियता वराहाचलवासिनम् ।
svāmipuṣkariṇītīrthe snātvā sarvātmakaṁ harim ye vā paśyaṁti niyatā varāhācalavāsinam
Or those who, having bathed at the Svami Pushkarini ford, with disciplined minds behold Hari, the Self of all, dwelling on Varahachala,
Verse 75 (skanda.2.38.75)
तेऽश्वमेधसहस्रस्य वाजपेयशतस्य च । प्राप्नुवंति फलं पूर्णं नात्र कार्या विचारणा ।
te'śvamedhasahasrasya vājapeyaśatasya ca prāpnuvaṁti phalaṁ pūrṇaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
they obtain the full fruit of a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices and a hundred Vajapeya sacrifices; no doubt need be entertained here.
Verse 76 (skanda.2.38.76)
वेंकटाचलमाहात्म्यं ये शृण्वंति नरोत्तमाः । तेषां मुक्तिश्च भुक्तिश्च इह लोके परत्र च ।
veṁkaṭācalamāhātmyaṁ ye śṛṇvaṁti narottamāḥ teṣāṁ muktiśca bhuktiśca iha loke paratra ca
Those best of men who hear the Mahatmya of Venkatachala attain both liberation and enjoyment, both in this world and the next.
Verse 77 (skanda.2.38.77)
वेंकटाचलमाहात्म्यं संक्षिप्य कथितं तव । अतः परं महानद्याः प्रभावः कथ्यतेऽर्जुन ।
veṁkaṭācalamāhātmyaṁ saṁkṣipya kathitaṁ tava ataḥ paraṁ mahānadyāḥ prabhāvaḥ kathyate'rjuna
The Mahatmya of Venkatachala has been related to you in brief; hereafter, O Arjuna, the glory of the great river shall be told.
