Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 42
Yama's Hymn and Lakshmi's Revelation
Verse 1 (skanda.2.42.1)
jaiminiruvāca tato brahmāgamattūrṇaṁ yatrāste bhagavānsvayam stavānte'sau yathā dṛṣṭastathādrākṣītprabhuṁ tadā
Jaimini said: Then Brahma swiftly went to where the Lord himself dwells; at the end of his hymn, just as he had envisioned him, so he then beheld the Lord.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.42.2)
pratyabhijñānasaṁhṛṣṭastaṁ dṛṣṭvā parameśvaram atyadbhutajñānanidhirbabhūvāsau dvijottamāḥ
Rejoicing in recognition, having seen that Supreme Lord, he became, O best of the twice-born, a treasury of most wondrous knowledge.
Verse 3 (skanda.2.42.3)
yāvatstotuṁ samārebhe harṣasaṁphullalocanaḥ tāvadeva samāgatya kutaścidvāyasottamaḥ
Just as he began to praise him, his eyes wide with joy, at that very moment an excellent crow arrived there from somewhere.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.42.4)
kāruṇyodakasaṁpūrṇe tasminkuṇḍe nimajya tam vilokya mādhavaṁ nīlaratnakāntiṁ kṛpānidhim
Having plunged into that pool brimming with the water of compassion, and having beheld Madhava, treasury of mercy, radiant like a blue gem,
Verse 5 (skanda.2.42.5)
kākadehaṁ samutsṛjya luṭhamāno muhuḥ kṣitau śaṅkhacakragadāpāṇistasya pārśve vyavasthitaḥ
— casting off its crow-body, and rolling upon the ground again and again, it came to stand at his side, bearing conch, discus and mace in hand.
Verse 6 (skanda.2.42.6)
tiraścastāṁ gatiṁ dṛṣṭvā yogīndrāṇāṁ sudurlabhām mene'sau munayaḥ sṛṣṭiḥ kramātkṣīṇā bhaviṣyati
Seeing a mere beast attain a state hard to reach even for the greatest of yogis, the sages thought that creation itself would gradually come to an end —
Verse 7 (skanda.2.42.7)
manuṣyādhikṛte muktau vedānte saṁśayo'bhavat na kiṁciddurlabhaṁ ceha viṣṇubhaktasya vidyate
— for a doubt arose regarding the Vedantic teaching that liberation belongs to humans alone; here nothing whatsoever is difficult of attainment for a devotee of Vishnu.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.42.8)
pratyakṣo'bhūddvijaśreṣṭhāḥ purāṇapuruṣodite saṁkīrtya yannāma naraḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
It became directly manifest, O best of the twice-born, in what had been proclaimed by the Ancient Person — that a man who merely chants his name is released from every sin.
Verse 9 (skanda.2.42.9)
tasya saṁdarśane viprā muktiḥ kiṁ khalu durlabhā manasā dhyāyayanviṣṇuṁ tyajanprāṇānvimucyate
O Brahmins, how indeed could liberation be difficult to attain from mere sight of him? One who, meditating on Vishnu in the mind, gives up the breath of life, is set free.
Verse 10 (skanda.2.42.10)
sākṣātkṛto bhagavataḥ kiṁ citraṁ muktimeti yat puruṣottamasaṁjñasya kṣetrasya mahimādbhutaḥ
What wonder is it that one who has beheld the Lord face to face attains liberation? Such is the wondrous glory of the field named Purushottama.
Verse 11 (skanda.2.42.11)
yatra kāko'pi ca hariṁ sākṣātpaśyati bho dvijāḥ sudurlabhaṁ kṣetramidamajñānāṁ ca vimocanam aho kṣetrasya māhātmyaṁ kākasyāpi vimuktidam kiṁ punaḥ satataṁ śāntiṁ vairāgyajñānasaṁyujām
Here, O Brahmins, even a crow beholds Hari directly — this exceedingly rare field liberates even the ignorant. Ah, the greatness of a field that grants liberation even to a crow — how much more, then, to those ever endowed with peace, dispassion, and knowledge!
Verse 12 (skanda.2.42.12)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ nīlākhyaṁ mādhavaṁ dṛṣṭvā kiṁ cakāra pitāmahaḥ
The sages said: Having beheld the blue-hued Madhava, what did the Grandsire Brahma do?
Verse 13 (skanda.2.42.13)
taddarśane kṣaṇānnaṣṭadehabandhaṁ ca vāyasam
And the crow, whose bond to its bodily form was destroyed in an instant at the sight of him — what became of it?
Verse 14 (skanda.2.42.14)
jaiminiruvāca atyadbhutamayaṁ dṛṣṭvā yāvaddhyāyati mādhavam tāvatpitṛpatiḥ svādhikārasaṁyamanākulaḥ
Jaimini said: While Brahma, having beheld this most wondrous being, continued meditating upon Madhava, the Lord of the departed, troubled by the constraint upon his own office,
Verse 15 (skanda.2.42.15)
dīnānano niḥśvasanvai tatra yātastvarānvitaḥ nīlādrau mādhavaṁ dṛṣṭvā sāṣṭāṅgaṁ praṇipatya ca tuṣṭāva sa jagannāthaṁ svādhikāradṛḍhasthitau
— went there in haste, sighing with downcast face; and having seen Madhava upon the Blue Mountain, he fell in eightfold prostration, and, remaining firm in his own office, praised Jagannatha.
Verse 16 (skanda.2.42.16)
yama uvāca namaste devadeveśa sṛṣṭisthityantakāraṇa
Yama said: Salutations to you, O Lord of the gods, cause of creation, preservation and dissolution.
Verse 17 (skanda.2.42.17)
tvayi protamidaṁ sarvaṁ sūtre maṇigaṇā yathā tvayā dhṛtaṁ tvayā sṛṣṭaṁ tvayā cāpyāyitaṁ jagat
In you all this is strung, as a row of gems upon a thread; the universe is upheld by you, created by you, and nourished by you.
Verse 18 (skanda.2.42.18)
candrasūryādirūpeṇa nityaṁ bhāsayase'khilam viśveśvaraṁ jagadyoniṁ viśvāvāsaṁ jagadgurum
In the forms of moon, sun and the rest, you eternally illumine the whole — Lord of the universe, womb of the world, abode of all, guru of the world —
Verse 19 (skanda.2.42.19)
viśvasākṣiṇamādyantavarjitaṁ praṇamāmyaham namaḥ paramakāruṇyajalasaṁbhṛtasindhave
— witness of the universe, without beginning or end, I bow to you. Salutation to you, the ocean brimming with the waters of supreme compassion,
Verse 20 (skanda.2.42.20)
parāparaparātītavibhave viśvasaṁbhave
— whose majesty transcends both the higher and the lower, the very origin of the universe,
Verse 21 (skanda.2.42.21)
bhavasaṁtāpanīhārabhānave dīnabandhave svamāyāracitāśeṣa bhave guṇarajjave
— sun that dispels the mist of worldly torment, friend of the helpless, who binds this entire existence, fashioned by your own maya, with the rope of the [three] qualities,
Verse 22 (skanda.2.42.22)
namaḥ kamalakiṁjalka pītanirmalavāsase mahāhavaripuskandha kṛṁtacakrāya cakriṇe
— salutation to you whose garment is pure and yellow as the lotus filament; O wielder of the discus that in great battle severs the shoulders of foes, salutation to you.
Verse 23 (skanda.2.42.23)
daṁṣṭroddhṛta kṣitibhṛte trayīmūrtimate namaḥ namo yajñavarāhāya candrasūryāgnicakṣuṣe
Salutation to you who bore up the earth upon your tusk, whose very form is the threefold Veda; salutation to the sacrificial Boar, whose eyes are the moon, the sun and fire,
Verse 24 (skanda.2.42.24)
narasiṁhāya daṁṣṭrogramūrtidrāvitaśatrave yadapāṅgavilāsaika sṛṣṭisthityupasaṁhṛtiḥ
— to Narasimha, of fierce, fanged form, who dissolved his enemy; by the mere sport of whose sidelong glance creation, preservation and dissolution occur,
Verse 25 (skanda.2.42.25)
uccāvacātmako hyeṣa bhavaḥ saṁbhavate muhuḥ tamamuṁ nīlameghābhaṁ nīlāśmamaṇivigraham
— this manifold existence, high and low, arises again and again. To him, dark as a blue-hued cloud, whose form is of blue gemstone,
Verse 26 (skanda.2.42.26)
nīlācalaguhāvāsaṁ praṇamāmi kṛpānidhim śaṅkhacakragadāpadmadhāriṇaṁ śubhadāyinam
— who dwells in a cave of the Blue Mountain, the treasury of mercy, I bow; who bears conch, discus, mace and lotus, the giver of blessing,
Verse 27 (skanda.2.42.27)
praṇatāśeṣapāpaughadāriṇaṁ muravairiṇam namaste kamalāpāṅga saṁgasaṁskāracakṣuṣe
— who tears away the whole mass of sin of those who bow to him, the enemy of Mura. Salutation to you whose glance bears the very grace of Kamala's own sidelong look,
Verse 28 (skanda.2.42.28)
śrīvatsakaustubhodbhāsi manohṛdvyūḍhavakṣase yatpādapaṁkajadvaṁdvasaṁśrayaiśvaryabhāginī
— whose broad chest, gleaming with the Shrivatsa mark and the Kaustubha jewel, captivates the mind; by taking refuge in whose paired lotus feet she shares in sovereignty —
Verse 29 (skanda.2.42.29)
śrīḥ saṁśritā janaiḥ śaśvatpṛthagaiśvaryadāyinī yā parāparasaṁbhinnā prakṛtiste sisṛkṣayā
— that Shri, ever taken refuge in by people, bestowing manifold sovereignty; she who, blended of both the higher and the lower, is your Prakriti, moved by the wish to create,
Verse 30 (skanda.2.42.30)
nirvikāraṁ paraṁ brahma vikāri sasṛjeṁjasā sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpūrṇā lakṣitāṁ śubhalakṣaṇaiḥ lakṣmīśorasi nityasthā lakṣmīṁ tāṁ praṇamāmyaham
— at once brought forth change out of the changeless supreme Brahman; complete with every mark, distinguished by auspicious signs — to her, Lakshmi, ever dwelling upon the breast of Lakshmi's Lord, I bow.
Verse 31 (skanda.2.42.31)
jaiminiruvāca tadevaṁ dharmarājena śrīkāntaḥ paritoṣitaḥ pārśvasthāṁ vallakīhastāṁ netrāntenādiśacchriyam
Jaimini said: Thus satisfied by the King of Dharma, the Beloved of Shri signaled with the corner of his eye to Shri, who stood at his side holding a lute.
Verse 32 (skanda.2.42.32)
tena saṁbhāvitā lakṣmīrbhavaduḥkhavināśinī śubhāya sarvalokānāṁ yamaṁ provāca līlayā
Thus honored, Lakshmi, the destroyer of worldly sorrow, spoke playfully to Yama, for the welfare of all the worlds:
Verse 33 (skanda.2.42.33)
lakṣmīruvāca yadarthamāvāṁ saṁstauṣi kṣetresmindurlabhaṁ hi tat atyājyamāvayoretatkṣetraṁ śrīpuruṣottamam
Lakshmi said: That for whose sake you praise us both is indeed hard to attain in this field; this field of Shri-Purushottama can never be forsaken by either of us.
Verse 34 (skanda.2.42.34)
kalpāvasānepyāvāṁ vai dhriyete parameṣṭhinā brahmādidikprabhūṇāṁ hi svāmitvaṁ neha vidyate
Even at the end of an aeon, the two of us are upheld by the Supreme Being alone; the lordship of Brahma and the other guardians of the quarters has no dominion here.
Verse 35 (skanda.2.42.35)
neha karmaparīpākāḥ saṁbhavaṁti kadācana atra pravasatāṁ nṛṇāṁ tiraścāmapi duṣkṛtām
Here the ripening of past deeds never occurs at all — for the men, and even the beasts of evil deeds, who dwell here,
Verse 36 (skanda.2.42.36)
dahyate jvalitāgnau hi tūlarāśiryathā bhṛśam ye baddhā pāpapuṇyābhyāṁ nigaḍābhyāmaharniśam
— just as a heap of cotton is utterly consumed in blazing fire, so too those bound day and night by the fetters of sin and merit,
Verse 37 (skanda.2.42.37)
teṣāṁ saṁyamitā tvaṁ hi yamaḥ pūrvaṁ vinirmitaḥ atra sākṣādvapuṣmaṁtaṁ nīlendramaṇimaṁjulam
— of them you, made Yama in ancient times, are the restrainer. But here, having beheld in person the embodied Lord, lovely as the king of blue gems,
Verse 38 (skanda.2.42.38)
dṛṣṭvā nārāyaṇaṁ devaṁ mucyate karmabandhanāt ato'nyataḥ karmabhūmau prabhutvaṁ sūryasaṁbhava
— the god Narayana, one is released from the bonds of karma. Apart from this place, O son of the Sun, your dominion holds over the [rest of the] land of karma.
Verse 39 (skanda.2.42.39)
vaiklavyaṁ kṣetrarājesminmā gāstvaṁ yama saṁyame tavāpi bhagavāneṣa vidhātā prapitāmahaḥ
Do not, O Yama, fall into distress over your office of restraint in this king of fields; this Lord is also the ordainer, the great-grandsire, even of you.
Verse 40 (skanda.2.42.40)
tiryaṁcaṁ viṣṇusārūpyaṁ prāptaṁ paśyati kautukāt eṣa karmaparīpākaṁ sarveṣāṁ vetti kaṁjajaḥ
He looks with wonder even upon a beast that has attained likeness of form with Vishnu; this lotus-born Brahma knows the ripening of karma for all beings.
Verse 41 (skanda.2.42.41)
jñātvā kṣetrasya māhātmyaṁ stauti devaṁ gadādharam tvadvaśaṁ gaṁtumucitā neha tiṣṭhaṁti jaṁtavaḥ
Knowing the greatness of this field, he praises the god Gadadhara. Creatures fit to fall under your sway do not remain here.
Verse 42 (skanda.2.42.42)
vaivasvata vasaṁtyatra jīvanmuktā mumukṣavaḥ tayā saṁbodhitastvevaṁ viṣṇunā strīsvarūpiṇā tato'haṁkāralajjābhyāṁ vinītaḥ prābravīdyamaḥ
O son of Vivasvat, here dwell those liberated while living and those seeking liberation. Thus addressed by her, Vishnu in the form of a woman, Yama, humbled by both pride and shame, then spoke:
Verse 43 (skanda.2.42.43)
yama uvāca mātastvayā yadājñaptaṁ purā naitanmayā śrutam
Yama said: O Mother, what you have just declared, I had never heard before.
Verse 44 (skanda.2.42.44)
ajñānopahato vedmi rahasyaṁ kathamuttamam yasya svarūpaṁ vedāśca na ca vetti pitāmahaḥ
Struck by ignorance, how could I know this supreme secret, whose very nature neither the Vedas nor even the Grandsire knows?
Verse 45 (skanda.2.42.45)
mahimānaṁ kathaṁ tasya vedmyahaṁkāra mohitaḥ yadādiṣṭaṁ sureśāni kṣetrametadvimuktidam
Deluded by pride, how could I know his greatness? O Queen of the gods, as you have declared — this field grants liberation.
Verse 46 (skanda.2.42.46)
sānnidhyādvāsudevasya īśvarecchā niraṁkuśā anyatra bandhado viṣṇuratra mokṣaṁ dadāti yat
By the very presence of Vasudeva, the Lord's will becomes unrestrained; elsewhere Vishnu binds through karma, but here he grants liberation.
Verse 47 (skanda.2.42.47)
mamāpi nirayāṇāṁ ca sraṣṭāsau tridivasya ca mṛtānāmatra muktiścettanmāmaṁba suvistaram
He is the creator even of my hells and of heaven; if the dead attain liberation here, then, O Mother, tell me this in full detail —
Verse 48 (skanda.2.42.48)
kṣetrasaṁsthāpramāṇaṁ hi tatra sthiti phalaṁ hi yat tīrthāni kāni saṁtyatra kimanyadvā rahasyakam
— the layout and dimensions of this field, and what fruit comes from dwelling there; what sacred fords exist here, and whatever other secret matter there may be —
Verse 49 (skanda.2.42.49)
kimadhiṣṭhātṛkaṁ kṣetraṁ tatsarvaṁ kathayasva me tadahaṁ saṁparityajya nirbhayaḥ saṁcare yathā
— and what deity presides over this field — tell me all of this, so that, casting off my fear, I may move about here in safety.
