The Boon to Indradyumna and the Festival Calendar

Chapter 68All chaptersChapter 70

Verse 1 (skanda.2.69.1)

jaiminiruvāca ityuktvā nṛpaśārdūlaṁ lokasaṁgrahaṇāya vai siṁhākṛti sa hṛdaye udvāsya kamalāsanaḥ

Jaimini said: Having spoken thus to the tiger among kings, for the sake of gathering the worlds together, the Lotus-seated one, having withdrawn the Lion-form into his heart,

Verse 2 (skanda.2.69.2)

pūrvaṁ prakāśarūpaṁ yadviṣṇostu prakaṭīkṛtam rathāvarohaṇe dṛṣṭāścatasro mūrttayaḥ purā

revealed again the earlier luminous form of Vishnu that had once been shown — the four forms that had earlier been seen at the descent from the chariot —

Verse 3 (skanda.2.69.3)

tā eva siṁhāsanagāḥ sarve te dadṛśuḥ punaḥ dviṣaḍakṣaramantreṇa balabhadramapūjayat

were all seen again by everyone, seated upon the throne. With the twelve-syllabled mantra he worshipped Balabhadra;

Verse 4 (skanda.2.69.4)

sūktena pauruṣeṇainaṁ nārāyaṇamanāmayam devīsūktena cakraṁ ca dvādaśākṣarakeṇa ca pūjayitvānugrahāya pārthivasya nyavedayat

with the Purusha-sukta he worshipped this unailing Narayana; and worshipping the Discus with the Devi-sukta and the twelve-syllabled mantra as well, he made entreaty for the sake of the king's grace.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.69.5)

brahmovāca bhagavandevadeveśa bhaktānugrahakāraka indradyumnasya janmāni tvayi bhaktiṁ prakurvataḥ sahasraṁ samatītāni tadante tvāmalokayat

Brahma said: 'O Lord, God of gods, bestower of grace upon your devotees! A thousand births of Indradyumna, ever practicing devotion to you, have passed; at their end he now beholds you.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.69.6)

tvaddarśanaṁ hi bhagavaṁstvayi sāyujyakāraṇam yadyapyayaṁ bhaktiyogenecchati tvāṁ samarcitum

The sight of you, O Lord, is indeed the cause of union with you. Since this king wishes, through the yoga of devotion, to worship you fully,

Verse 7 (skanda.2.69.7)

tadājñāpaya yena tvāṁ bhaktiyogena bhāvayet deśakālavratādyaistu tathā nānopacārakaiḥ

instruct him, therefore, as to how he may contemplate you through the yoga of devotion — by the proper places, times, and vows, and by the many forms of service.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.69.8)

tvanmukhāṁbhojagalitamājñāmṛtarasaṁ nṛpaḥ pipāsustvāṁ jagannātha paśyatyeṣo'nimeṣakam

Thirsting for the nectar of command flowing from your lotus mouth, this king, O Jagannatha, gazes upon you without blinking.'

Verse 9 (skanda.2.69.9)

jaiminiruvāca iti vijñāpito devaḥ sākṣātkamalayoninā dārudeho'pi vihasanprāha gaṁbhīrayā girā

Jaimini said: Thus petitioned directly by the Lotus-born, the god, though of wooden body, smiled and spoke in a deep voice.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.69.10)

śrīpratimovāca indradyumna prasannaste bhaktyā niṣkāmakarmabhiḥ tvadanyenedṛśī saṁpanna kenāpyapavarjitā

The Sacred Image said: 'O Indradyumna, I am pleased with your devotion and your desireless deeds. Such fortune as this has been granted, complete, to no one else but you.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.69.11)

varaṁ dadāmi te bhūpa mayi bhaktiḥ sthirā'stu te utsṛjya vittakoṭīstu yanmamāyatanaṁ kṛtam

I grant you a boon, O king: may your devotion to me remain firm. Having spent crores of wealth to build this, my abode —

Verse 12 (skanda.2.69.12)

bhaṁgepyetasya rājeṁdra sthānaṁ na tyajyate mayā kālāṁtare'pi yo'pyanyaḥ prāsādaṁ kārayiṣyati

even should it fall into ruin, O king of kings, I shall not abandon this place. Even at a later time, whoever else may have a temple built here,

Verse 13 (skanda.2.69.13)

tavaiva kīrttiḥ sā nūnaṁ tvatprītyā tatra me sthitiḥ satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ satyameva bravīmi te

that fame will surely still be yours; it is for love of you that I abide there. Truly, truly, and again truly, I speak nothing but the truth to you:

Verse 14 (skanda.2.69.14)

prāsāda bhaṁge tatsthānaṁ na tyakṣyāmi kadācana anena dāruvapuṣā sthāsyāmyatra parārddhakam

even should the temple fall into ruin, I will never abandon this place. In this very wooden body I shall abide here for half of Brahma's lifespan,

Verse 15 (skanda.2.69.15)

dvitīyaṁ padmayonestu yāvatparisamāpyate manoḥ svāyaṁbhuvasyāsya dvitīye ca caturyuge

that is, until the second half of the Lotus-born's life is complete — and within the second cycle of four ages of this Svayambhuva Manu,

Verse 16 (skanda.2.69.16)

kṛtasya prathame jyeṣṭhe daśeti kratusaṁsthitiḥ jyaiṣṭhyāmahaṁ cāvatīrṇastatpuṇyajanmavāsaram

in the first, Krita age, on the tenth of Jyeshtha, the sacrificial rite was established. I descended in Jyeshtha; that is my own sacred birthday.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.69.17)

tasyāṁ me snapanaṁ kuryānmahāsnānavidhānataḥ pratyarcāyāṁ mahārāja sādhivāsaṁ samṛddhimat

On that day my bathing should be performed according to the great bathing rite; and at the re-consecration, O great king, with the vigil-rite, rich with prosperity,

Verse 18 (skanda.2.69.18)

pāpaṁ vināśayiṣyāmi koṭijanmabhirarjitam sarvatīrthakratuphalaṁ sarvadānaphalaṁ tathā

I shall destroy sins accumulated over a crore of births, and grant the fruit of every sacred ford, every sacrifice, and every gift as well,

Verse 19 (skanda.2.69.19)

paśyatāṁ cāpi rājeṁdra phalaṁ tāvatprapadyate nyagrodhāduttare kūpaḥ sarvatīrthamayo'sti hi

and even for those who merely watch, O king of kings, that same fruit is obtained. North of the banyan tree there is indeed a well containing the essence of every sacred ford;

Verse 20 (skanda.2.69.20)

snānāya pūrvaṁ nirmāya kiṁcidācchāditaṁ bhuvā avatīrṇastvahaṁ paścāttaṁ vivicya prakāśaya

made earlier for bathing, it has since become somewhat covered over by earth. Now that I have descended, uncover it and bring it to light again.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.69.21)

saṁskāryaḥ sa caturdaśyāṁ baliṁ dattvā vidhānataḥ rakṣakakṣetrapālāya diśāṁpālebhya eva ca

It should be ritually purified on the fourteenth day, offering oblations according to rule to the guardian Kshetrapala and to the guardians of the directions,

Verse 22 (skanda.2.69.22)

kambukāhālamurajadhvaniṣu susvareṣu ca dvijātayaḥ svarṇakumbhairuddhareyustato jalam

amid the sweet sounds of conch, kahala-horn, and drum; then the twice-born should draw its water up with golden pitchers.

Verse 23 (skanda.2.69.23)

jyaiṣṭhyāṁ prātastane kāle brahmaṇā sahitaṁ ca mām rāmaṁ subhadrāṁ saṁsnāpya mama lokamavāpnuyāt

On the day of Jyeshtha, in the morning hour, having bathed me together with Brahma, Rama, and Subhadra, one attains my world.

Verse 24 (skanda.2.69.24)

snāpyamānaṁ tu yaḥ paśyenmāṁ tadā nṛpasattama dehabandhaṁ ca nāpnoti sa punarna tu pūruṣaḥ

Whoever, O best of kings, beholds me while I am being bathed at that time attains no further bondage to a body; he is not born again as a mortal.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.69.25)

kārayitvā dṛḍhaṁ maṁcamaiśānyāṁ diśi maṁḍitam vitānaśobhāracitaṁ caṁdanāṁbhaḥ samukṣitam

Having had a sturdy platform built and adorned in the northeast, decorated with a beautiful canopy, sprinkled with sandal-water,

Verse 26 (skanda.2.69.26)

tatra māṁ rāmabhadrābhyāṁ snāpayitvā punarnayet

one should there bathe me together with Rama and Bhadra, and then lead us back.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.69.27)

dakṣiṇābhimukhaṁ yāṁtaṁ yo māṁ paśyati bhaktitaḥ tattaddhruvamavāpnoti manasā yadyadicchati

Whoever with devotion beholds me as I proceed facing southward — whatever he desires in his mind, that he surely obtains.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.69.28)

tataḥ paṁcadaśāhāni sthāpayitvā tu māṁ nṛpa virūpamabhirūpaṁ vā na paśyettu kadācana

Then, O king, having installed me for fifteen days, one should never look upon me in that time, whether I appear disfigured or beautiful.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.69.29)

jyeṣṭhasnānamidaṁ kṛtvā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

Having performed this bathing festival of Jyeshtha, one is freed from every sin.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.69.30)

guṁḍicākhyāṁ mahāyātrāṁ prakurvīthāḥ kṣitīśvara yasyāḥ saṁkīrtanādeva naraḥ pāpādvimucyate

You should hold the great pilgrimage-festival called Gundicha, O lord of the earth, by the mere glorifying of which a man is freed from sin.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.69.31)

māghamāsasya paṁcamyāmaṣṭamyāṁ caitraśuklake ete kālāḥ praśastā hi guṁḍicākhyamahotsave

On the fifth of the month of Magha, and on the eighth of the bright fortnight of Chaitra — these are the times declared excellent for the great festival called Gundicha.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.69.32)

viśeṣānmokṣadāṣāḍhadvitīyā puṣyasaṁyutā ṛkṣābhāve tithau kāryā sadā sā prītaye mama

Especially liberating is the second day of Ashadha joined with the Pushya nakshatra; in that asterism's absence it should always be held on that same tithi, for it pleases me.

Verse 33 (skanda.2.69.33)

āṣāḍhasya site pakṣe dvitīyā puṣyasaṁyutā tasyāṁ rathe samāropya rāmaṁ māṁ bhadrayā saha

On the second day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha, joined with Pushya — on that day, having mounted Rama, myself, and Bhadra together upon the chariot,

Verse 34 (skanda.2.69.34)

mahotsavapravṛttyarthaṁ prīṇayitvā dvijānbahūn guṁḍicāmaṇḍapaṁnāma yatrāhamajanaṁ purā

and, to set the great festival in motion, having gratified many brahmins, proceed to the pavilion named Gundicha, where I was born of old.

Verse 35 (skanda.2.69.35)

aśvamedhasahasrasya mahāvedī tadābhavat tasyāḥ puṇyatamaṁ sthānaṁ pṛthivyāṁ neha vidyate

There once stood the great sacrificial altar of a thousand horse-sacrifices; there exists on this earth no place more meritorious than that.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.69.36)

yatrājuhoḥ paṁcaśatavarṣāṇi prītaye mama mama prītikaraṁ sthānaṁ tasmānnānyaddharāgatam

There, for five hundred years, oblations were offered for my pleasure; there is no place on earth, other than that one, which so delights me —

Verse 37 (skanda.2.69.37)

yatheyaṁ nīlaśikharā prāsādena tavādhunā caturmukhānurodhena mahāprītikarī mama

except this peak of Nila, now made greatly pleasing to me by your temple, built at the request of the four-faced one.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.69.38)

tathā nṛsiṁhakṣetre vai mahāvedī tava kratoḥ mamotpatteśca nilayaṁ prītikṛnmama śāśvatam

Likewise, in that field there stands the great altar of your sacrifice and the very dwelling of my origin — it is eternally pleasing to me.

Verse 39 (skanda.2.69.39)

bahukālaṁ sthitaścāhaṁ tasyāṁ me prītiruttamā ātmā me padmabhūreṣa prāsāde sthāpito'munā

For a long time I dwelt there, and my supreme delight lies in that place. My very self has been established in this temple by this one, Brahma —

Verse 40 (skanda.2.69.40)

asyānurodhāttvadbhaktyā hyavatiṣṭhe'tra nityadā dināni nava yāsyāmi tathā tasmādihāgataḥ

at his request, and through your devotion, I dwell here forever; yet for nine days I shall go there, since it was from there that I came here.

Verse 41 (skanda.2.69.41)

tatrāsti te mahārāja sarvatīrthamayaṁ saraḥ tattīre saptadivasānsthāsyāmyanujighṛkṣayā

There, O great king, there is for you a lake containing the essence of every sacred ford; on its shore I shall remain seven days, wishing to bestow my grace.

Verse 42 (skanda.2.69.42)

tatra sthitaṁ māṁ paśyaṁto yāṁti martyā mamālayam tisraḥ koṭyo'rddhakoṭī ca tīrthānāṁ bhuvanatraye

Mortals who behold me residing there attain my own abode. Three and a half crores of sacred fords exist across the three worlds;

Verse 43 (skanda.2.69.43)

tāni sarvāṇi sarasi matsānnidhyādvrajaṁti te tatra snātvā ca vidhivaddṛṣṭvā māṁ bhaktibhāvataḥ

all of them, through my presence, come to gather in that lake. Bathing there according to rule, and beholding me with devotion,

Verse 44 (skanda.2.69.44)

jananījaṭhare kleśaṁ punarnānubhavaṁti hi navame'hni samāyātaṁ dakṣiṇāśāmukhaṁ tadā

one never again undergoes the suffering of the mother's womb. On the ninth day, when I have returned, facing the southern direction,

Verse 45 (skanda.2.69.45)

ye paśyanti pratipadamaśvamedhakratoḥ phalam prāpya bhogāniṁdrasamānbhuktvānte māṁ viśaṁti te

those who behold me at each such stage obtain the fruit of the horse-sacrifice; having enjoyed pleasures equal to Indra's, they at last enter into me.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.69.46)

mamotthānaṁ mama svāpaṁ matpārśvaparivarttanam mārgaprāvaraṇaṁ caiva puṣyasnānamahotsavam

My rising, my lying down to rest, my turning upon my side, and also my being covered along the road, and the great bathing-festival of Pushya —

Verse 47 (skanda.2.69.47)

phālgunyāṁ krīḍanaṁ kuryāddolāyāṁ mama bhūmipa dolāyāṁ ye'pi paśyaṁti dakṣiṇāmukhapūjitam

in the month of Phalguna you should hold the swing-festival for me, O lord of the earth. Whoever beholds me upon the swing, worshipped there facing south,

Verse 48 (skanda.2.69.48)

brahmahatyādibhiḥ pāpairmucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

is freed from sins such as the killing of a brahmin — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 49 (skanda.2.69.49)

anayormāṁ samabhyarcya dṛṣṭvā māṁ praṇipatya ca pratyekamaṣṭasāhasraṁ vājimedhaphalaṁ labhet

Worshipping me at both of these occasions, beholding me, and bowing before me, one obtains, for each, the fruit of eight thousand horse-sacrifices.

Verse 50 (skanda.2.69.50)

caitre sitatrayodaśyāṁ kuryātkarmaprapūraṇam caitre māsi caturdaśyāṁ damanairme prapūjanam śuklapakṣe tu ye lokāḥ sarvapāpakṣayo bhavet

On the thirteenth of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, one should complete the rite; on the fourteenth of Chaitra, my worship should be done with damana leaves; whoever does so in the bright fortnight has all their sins destroyed.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.69.51)

vaiśākhasya site pakṣe tṛtīyā'kṣayasaṁjñitā tatra māṁ lepayedgandhalepanairatiśobhanaiḥ

On the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, the third day is called the Imperishable (Akshaya); on that day one should anoint me with the most beautiful fragrant unguents.

Verse 52 (skanda.2.69.52)

prītaye mama ye kuryurutsavānmama śāśvatān caturvargapradā hyete pratyekaṁ parikīrtitāḥ

Whoever, for my pleasure, keeps these my eternal festivals — each of them is declared to bestow the four aims of life.'

Verse 53 (skanda.2.69.53)

jaiminiruvāca iti dattvā varaṁ tasmā indradyumnāya bho dvijāḥ brahmāṇamāha bhagavānsmerāṁbhoruhasanmukhaḥ

Jaimini said: Having thus granted this boon to Indradyumna, O brahmins, the Lord, his lotus-like face smiling, spoke to Brahma:

Verse 54 (skanda.2.69.54)

caturmukha tava prītyai sarvaṁ saṁpāditaṁ mayā tvadicchā hi mamaivecchā na bhedo hyāvayordhruvam

'O four-faced one, all this has been accomplished by me for your pleasure. Your wish is indeed my own wish; there is truly no difference between the two of us.

Verse 55 (skanda.2.69.55)

yanmāṁ mādhavamūrtiṁ tvaṁ purā prārthitavānasi tasyaiva paripāko'yamavatāraḥ kṛto mayā

That form of Madhava which you long ago prayed I might take — this very incarnation is the ripening of that prayer, brought about by me.

Verse 56 (skanda.2.69.56)

māmatra dṛṣṭvā tvabhyarcya prāṇānsaṁtyajya mucyate kramātsarve tvayā sārddhaṁ bhūyaḥ sāyujyameva ca

Whoever, having beheld and worshipped me here, gives up his last breath is liberated; and, in due course, all shall attain, together with you, union with me once more.

Verse 57 (skanda.2.69.57)

yadvācābhilapanmartyo māmatra hi niṣevate avaśyaṁ tadavāpnoti saṁgatyā cātra bhūpatiḥ

Whatever a mortal, speaking it aloud, seeks from me by serving me here, that he surely obtains — and by such good company, the king too obtains it.

Verse 58 (skanda.2.69.58)

vrajedānīṁ satyalokaṁ tridivaṁ yāṁtu devatāḥ tavāyuḥpūrṇiparyaṁtamahamatra sthito dhruvam

Now go to Satyaloka; let the gods go to their own heaven. Until the end of your allotted lifespan, I shall remain here firmly and without fail.'

Verse 59 (skanda.2.69.59)

tataste harṣitāḥ sarve brahmarṣisurasattamāḥ praṇamya śirasā devaṁ jagmuste nilayaṁ svakam

Then all those best of the brahmarshis and gods, filled with joy, bowed their heads to the Lord and went each to his own abode.

Verse 60 (skanda.2.69.60)

devo'pi ca jagannāthaḥ pratimārūpadhṛktadā tūṣṇīṁ tiṣṭhati sarveṣāṁ harṣamāpādayannṛṇām

And the god Jagannatha too, bearing the form of the sacred image, then remained silent, bestowing joy upon all people.

Verse 61 (skanda.2.69.61)

indradyumno'pi dharmātmā viṣṇubhakto dṛḍhavrataḥ anuvrajanpadmayoniṁ tenādiṣṭo nyavartata

Indradyumna too, righteous of soul, a devotee of Vishnu firm in his vows, followed the Lotus-born for a while, and then, instructed by him, turned back.

Verse 62 (skanda.2.69.62)

yātrāḥ sarvā bhagavatā ājñaptāḥ sādhu kāraya asmiṁstuṣṭe jagannāthe santuṣṭaṁ vai carācaram

'Faithfully perform all the pilgrimage-festivals commanded by the Lord. When Jagannatha is pleased, all that moves and moves not becomes truly content.'

Verse 63 (skanda.2.69.63)

ityājñāṁ padmayonestu mūrdhnyādhāya kṣitīśvaraḥ nāradena saha śrīmānnidhinā ca samṛddhimat jyeṣṭhasnānādikaṁ sarvamutsavaṁ niravartayat

Having thus placed the command of the Lotus-born upon his head in reverence, the glorious lord of the earth, together with Narada and with his minister Nidhi, richly performed the entire festival, beginning with the Jyeshtha bathing rite.
