Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 72
The Southward-Facing Darshan and the Vow of Jyeshtha-Panchaka
Verse 1 (skanda.2.72.1)
jaiminiruvāca ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi dakṣiṇāmūrtidarśanam pade pade aśvamedhasya phalaṁ yatropalabhyate
Jaimini said: Now I shall further describe the sight of the deities' southward-facing form, wherein at every step one obtains the fruit of an ashvamedha sacrifice.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.72.2)
tato nānāvidhairdivyairbhakṣyabhojyādikaistathā yathāśaktyupacāraistu gaṁdhairmālyaiśca pūjayet
Then one should worship with various divine foods and delicacies, and according to one's means, with fragrances and garlands offered as ritual honors.
Verse 3 (skanda.2.72.3)
rāmaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ subhadrāṁ ca gītanṛtyādikaistathā prekṣaṇīyaiśca vividhaiḥ śraddhayā copapāditaiḥ
Balarama, Krishna, and Subhadra should be honored with songs, dances, and various spectacles offered with reverence.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.72.4)
vastracaṁdanamālyādyaiḥ pūjayitvā dvijottamān bhagavadbrāhmaṇāṁścaitānmahābhāgavatāṁstathā
Having worshipped the finest brahmins, the devout brahmins of the Lord, and the great Bhagavatas with cloth, sandal-paste, and garlands,
Verse 5 (skanda.2.72.5)
tato nayeddakṣiṇābhimukhāṁstāṁstridaśeśvarān utsavaṁ ca mahatkṛtvā pūrvānayanavaddhareḥ
Then one should lead those lords of the gods facing toward the south, holding a great festival just as when Hari was first brought forth.
Verse 6 (skanda.2.72.6)
Whatever mortal beholds Hari at that time, moving with his face turned south together with Subhadra, is no ordinary human being.
Verse 7 (skanda.2.72.7)
snānārthamāgatā devāḥ snāpayitvā jagadgurum ākāśe'pi sasaṁbādhāstāvatkālaṁ sthitā harim draṣṭuṁ vrajaṁtaṁ yāmyāśāvadanaṁ bhavanāśanam
The gods who had come for the bathing rite, having bathed the world's guru, remained crowded together even in the sky for that whole time, so as to behold Hari, the destroyer of worldly bondage, moving with his face turned toward the south.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.72.8)
dharmaśāstreṣu yāvaṁti dharmakarmāṇi saṁti vai tāni sarvāṇi saṁdraṣṭuṁ vrajaṁtaṁ dakṣiṇāmukham
Whatever meritorious rites are enumerated in the scriptures of dharma — all of them are witnessed at once by one who beholds him moving with face turned south.
Verse 9 (skanda.2.72.9)
snānadarśanajaṁ puṇyaṁ samagraṁ labhate tu saḥ snātaṁ murāriṁ yaḥ paśyedvrajaṁtaṁ dakṣiṇāmukham
Whoever beholds Murari, having been bathed, moving with his face turned south, obtains the entire merit born of witnessing that bath.
Verse 10 (skanda.2.72.10)
nīrājayitvā deveśaṁ rāmeṇa saha bhadrayā prāsādāṁtaḥ praveśyātha na paśyedvai kathaṁcana
Having performed the lamp-waving to the Lord of gods together with Rama and Bhadra, and then having led him inside the temple, thereafter no one should see him at all.
Verse 11 (skanda.2.72.11)
etattu vistareṇoktaṁ pūrvameva mayā dvijāḥ
This, O twice-born ones, I have already related to you in detail before.
Verse 12 (skanda.2.72.12)
munaya ūcuḥ bhagavanyattvayā proktaṁ jyeṣṭhāsnānapradarśanāt phalaṁ prāpnoti niyataṁ tanno brūhi vidāṁvara
The sages said: O Lord, you said that by witnessing the Jyeshtha bathing one certainly obtains a fruit — tell us of that, O best among the learned.
Verse 13 (skanda.2.72.13)
jaiminiruvāca haṁta vaḥ kathayiṣyāmi tadvrataṁ jyeṣṭhapaṁcakam nātaḥ parataraṁ proktamṛṣibhiḥ śāstrapāragaiḥ
Jaimini said: Well then, I shall tell you of that vow, the Jyeshtha-Panchaka, than which no greater vow has been declared by the sages versed in the scriptures.
Verse 14 (skanda.2.72.14)
śrautasmārtapurāṇoktavratānāmidamuttamam idaṁ prathamataḥ proktaṁ brahmaṇā parameṣṭhinā
This is the foremost among the vows declared in the shruti, smriti, and puranas; it was first proclaimed by Brahma, the Supreme Lord of Creation.
Verse 15 (skanda.2.72.15)
jyeṣṭhatvādvratamukhyānāṁ khyātaṁ tajjyeṣṭhapaṁcakam samudro jyeṣṭhaphaladaḥ prabhurjyeṣṭhaphalapradaḥ
Because it is the foremost among principal vows, it is renowned as the Jyeshtha-Panchaka; the ocean bestows the fruit of Jyeshtha, and the Lord too grants the fruit of Jyeshtha.
Verse 16 (skanda.2.72.16)
varṣasaṁdarśanātpuṇyaṁ maṁcakenaiva labhyate maṁcakena tu yallabhyaṁ mahājyaiṣṭhyāṁ tu tallabhet
The merit obtained by a year's beholding through the observance called Manchaka — that same merit is obtained on the day of Maha-Jyeshthi.
Verse 17 (skanda.2.72.17)
yanmayoktaṁ purā viprāḥ snānadarśanajaṁ phalam samagraṁ tadavāpnoti mahājyaiṣṭhyāṁ na saṁśayaḥ
O brahmins, whatever fruit born of witnessing the bath I described before — that entire fruit is obtained on Maha-Jyeshthi, without doubt.
Verse 18 (skanda.2.72.18)
munaya ūcuḥ mahājyaiṣṭhīṁ samācakṣva yatra snānaṁ mahāphalam tatra naḥ kautukaṁ brahmanmahadvai saṁpravarttate
The sages said: Describe to us Maha-Jyeshthi, O Brahmin, wherein the bathing bears great fruit — great curiosity has arisen in us about it.
Verse 19 (skanda.2.72.19)
jaiminiruvāca jyeṣṭhasya vimale pakṣe yā vai paṁcadaśī bhavet śakrarkṣaikāṁśagau candragurū ca guruvāsare
Jaimini said: When the full moon falls in the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha month, and on a Thursday the moon and Jupiter both stand together in a single portion of the constellation Jyeshtha (Indra's asterism),
Verse 20 (skanda.2.72.20)
śubhe yoge mahājyaiṣṭhī sarvapāpapraṇāśinī sarvakṣetraṁ sarvatīrthaṁ sapta vai sāgarāstathā
in such an auspicious conjunction occurs Maha-Jyeshthi, the destroyer of all sins. Then all sacred fields, all holy places, and all seven oceans,
Verse 21 (skanda.2.72.21)
kratavaśca mahādānasamūhaśca tapāṁsi ca vidyāścāṣṭādaśavidhā vratāni vividhāni ca
along with all sacrificial rites, the assemblies of great gifts, austerities, the eighteen branches of learning, and various vows,
Verse 22 (skanda.2.72.22)
śāṁtipauṣṭikakarmāṇi sāṁkhyayogastathaiva ca sarve saṁbhūya gacchaṁti kṣetraṁ śrīpuruṣottamam
and the rites for peace and prosperity, and Sankhya and Yoga as well — all of these together come to the sacred field of Shri Purushottama.
Verse 23 (skanda.2.72.23)
vṛndaśaḥ pravibhaktāsta ekaikaṁ kṣetragaṁ prati kasmai vayaṁ bhāgyavate jyeṣṭhasnānāvalokane
Divided into groups, they turn each toward some fortunate person dwelling in that field, saying: 'To which blessed one shall we go, for the sight of the Jyeshtha bathing?'
Verse 24 (skanda.2.72.24)
mahājyaiṣṭhyāṁ pravekṣyāmaḥ parasparamahaṁmayā tatra yāṁti mahāyoge bhagavatkṣetramuttamam
'We shall enter upon Maha-Jyeshthi' — thus, each vying with the other, they go at that time of great conjunction to the Lord's supreme sacred field.
Verse 25 (skanda.2.72.25)
mahājyaiṣṭhī mahāpuṇyā bhagavatprītivarddhanī tasyāṁ saṁpūjya deveśaṁ jagannāthaṁ kṛpārṇavam dṛṣṭvā ca snāpyamānaṁ taṁ pāpakośādvimucyate
Maha-Jyeshthi is of great merit, increasing the Lord's affection. On that day, having worshipped Jagannatha, the Lord of gods, the ocean of compassion, and having beheld him being bathed, one is freed from the sheath of sin.
Verse 26 (skanda.2.72.26)
ata ūrdhvaṁ pravakṣyāmi vrataṁ tajjyeṣṭhapañcakam vratenānena labhyaṁ yattattadeva bravīmi vaḥ
Now further I shall describe that vow, the Jyeshtha-Panchaka; whatever is obtained through this vow, that I shall tell you.
Verse 27 (skanda.2.72.27)
daśamyāṁ niyamaṁ kuryātprātaḥ snātvā yathāvidhi ācāryaṁ vṛṇuyāttatra vaiṣṇavaṁ dvijapuṁgavam
On the tenth day, having bathed at dawn according to rule, one should undertake the observance and there choose as preceptor an excellent Vaishnava brahmin.
Verse 28 (skanda.2.72.28)
itthaṁ saṁkalpamamalaṁ gṛhṇīyādvratamuttamam
Thus, having made a pure resolve, one should undertake this excellent vow.
Verse 29 (skanda.2.72.29)
devadeva jagannātha saṁsārārṇavatāraka adyārabhya vrataṁ deva yāvajjyaiṣṭhī ca sā tithiḥ tāvadvrataṁ kariṣyāmi prītaye tava keśava
'O God of gods, Jagannatha, ferryman across the ocean of transmigration! O Lord, from today until that Jyeshtha day arrives, I shall keep this vow for your pleasure, O Keshava.'
Verse 30 (skanda.2.72.30)
sarvatīrthābhiṣekaṁ ca pratyahaṁ vratabhojanam mūrtīnāṁ tava paṁcānāmekasyāpi prapūjanam
'The merit of bathing in all sacred waters each day, the vow's proper meal, and the worship of even one of your five forms —'
Verse 31 (skanda.2.72.31)
ekasmindivase deva trisaṁdhyaṁ tvatprasādataḥ samāpyatāṁ vratamidaṁ saphalaṁ cāstu te prabho
'In a single day, O Lord, through your grace at all three twilight hours, may this vow be completed and become fruitful, O Master.'
Verse 32 (skanda.2.72.32)
tataḥ paṁcasu tīrtheṣu snātvā ca gṛhametya ca sthaṁḍile vilikhetpadmamaṣṭapatraṁ sakarṇikam
Then, having bathed in five sacred waters and returned home, one should draw upon the altar an eight-petaled lotus with its central whorl.
Verse 33 (skanda.2.72.33)
tanmadhye sthāpayetkuṁbhaṁ tīrthāṁbhobhiḥ prapūritam sacaṁdanaphalairyuktaṁ tanmukhe tāmrabhājanam
In its center, one should place a pot filled with waters from sacred fords, and upon its mouth a copper vessel furnished with sandalwood and fruits.
Verse 34 (skanda.2.72.34)
vāsasā veṣṭitaṁ kaṇṭhe pātraṁ cākṣatapūritam tanmadhye sthāpayeddevaṁ sauvarṇaṁ madhusūdanam
Around its neck, wrapped in cloth, a vessel filled with unbroken rice should be set, and in the midst of it a golden image of Madhusudana should be established.
Verse 35 (skanda.2.72.35)
śubhāṁgāvayavaṁ śāṁtaṁ vāme śrīyutamīśvaram
the Lord whose limbs are all auspicious, who is serene, and who bears Shri seated at his left side,
Verse 36 (skanda.2.72.36)
dakṣiṇe ca garutmaṁtaṁ spṛśaṁtaṁ pṛṣṭhadeśataḥ śaṁkhacakradharaṁ cordhve padmāsanagataṁ vibhum
with Garuda at his right touching him from behind, holding the conch and discus above, that all-pervading Lord seated upon a lotus seat.
Verse 37 (skanda.2.72.37)
pūjayedupacāraistamācāryo vāpi bho dvijāḥ nīlotpalānāṁ mālāṁ tu bhaktyā devāya dāpayet
O brahmins, one should worship him with due honors, whether oneself or through the preceptor, and offer a garland of blue lotuses to the god with devotion.
Verse 38 (skanda.2.72.38)
daśamyāṁ pūjayitvaivaṁ daśakoṭyaghanāśanam prārthayetprāṁjalirbhūtvā mantrametaṁ samuccaran
Having thus worshipped on the tenth day the destroyer of ten million sins, one should pray with folded hands, uttering this mantra:
Verse 39 (skanda.2.72.39)

madhusūdana deveśa namaste mādhavīpriya kṛpāvārāṁnidhe pāhi patitaṁ māṁ bhavārṇave
'O Madhusudana, Lord of gods, salutation to you, O beloved of Madhavi (Lakshmi)! O ocean of compassion, save me who has fallen into the sea of worldly existence.'
Verse 40 (skanda.2.72.40)
ekādaśyāṁ caturbāhuṁ śaṁkhacakragadādharam nārāyaṇaṁ padmasaṁsthaṁ paṁcaniṣkavinirmitam tadarddhaṁ nirmitaṁ vāpi pūjayetpadmamālayā
On the eleventh day, one should worship, with a garland of lotuses, the four-armed Narayana bearing conch, discus, and mace, seated upon a lotus, his image fashioned of five nishkas of gold, or even of half that weight.
Verse 41 (skanda.2.72.41)

As offering one should present sweet rice-pudding, sugar, and plantains, and having offered various kinds of food, pray joyfully:
Verse 42 (skanda.2.72.42)

ekādaśeṁdriyakṛtaṁ pāparāśimanuttamam anādibhavanirvyūḍhaṁ nāśayetpūjitaḥ prabhuḥ
The Lord, thus worshipped, destroys that unsurpassed heap of sins wrought by the eleven senses and accumulated through beginningless worldly existence.
Verse 44 (skanda.2.72.44)

nānāvidhāpūpasārā bhakṣyabhojyaphalānvitāḥ nivedya prārthayeddevaṁ stutimetāṁ samuccaran
Having offered various excellent cakes, foods, and fruits, one should pray to the Lord, reciting this hymn of praise:
Verse 46 (skanda.2.72.46)
pralayārṇavasaṁmagnāṁ dharaṇīṁ dhṛtavānasi kinna śakto mamoddhāre patitasyāṁghripaṁkaje tanmāmuddhara goviṁda nimagnaṁ śokasāgare
'You upheld the earth when it was submerged in the ocean of deluge; are you then unable to lift me up, who have fallen at your lotus feet? Therefore raise me up, O Govinda, sunk as I am in the ocean of grief.'
Verse 47 (skanda.2.72.47)
abdo dvādaśamāso vai yāvadabdakṛtāni tu pāpāni mahadalpāni itaḥ pūrveṣu janmasu tadvināśayate devo dvādaśyāmarcito nṛṇām
A year consists of twelve months; whatever sins, great or small, have accrued in the course of a year in this life and in previous births, all of those the Lord, worshipped on the twelfth day, destroys for men.
Verse 48 (skanda.2.72.48)

upacārairyathāproktaiḥ pūjayedbhaktito naraḥ aśokapāṭalīmālāṁ caṁdrapūrṇāṁ samujjvalām
With the honors already described, a person should worship devoutly, and offer a radiant garland of ashoka and patali flowers, full and bright as the moon.
Verse 50 (skanda.2.72.50)
naivedyaṁ caiva pakvānnaṁ phalaṁ pakvaṁ manoharam dattvā namaskṛtiṁ kurvanprārthayetprāṁjaliḥ śuciḥ
Having offered cooked food and lovely ripe fruits, bowing down, purified, one should pray with folded hands:
Verse 51 (skanda.2.72.51)
deva pradyumna kāmānāṁ pūraka kāmarūpadhṛk kāmāśca saphalāḥ saṁtu kāmapāla namo'stu te
'O Lord Pradyumna, fulfiller of desires, taker of whatever form is desired! May my desires bear fruit; salutation to you, O guardian of desires.'
Verse 52 (skanda.2.72.52)
caturdaśyāṁ narahariṁ pūjayetkanakākṛtim vakṣaḥsthalasthayā lakṣmyā prīyamāṇaṁ saṭojjvalam
On the fourteenth day, one should worship Narahari (the Man-Lion) in golden form, delighted by Lakshmi seated upon his breast, his mane blazing bright.
Verse 53 (skanda.2.72.53)
vyāttānanaṁ sāṭṭahāsaṁ yogapaṭṭābjasaṁsthitam sutīkṣṇanakharaṁ devaṁ sarvāpadvinivāraṇam
With mouth agape in a mighty roar of laughter, seated upon a lotus with the yoga-band, his claws exceedingly sharp — that god averts every calamity.
Verse 54 (skanda.2.72.54)
caturbhirhemaniṣkaiśca ghaṭitaṁ śubhalakṣaṇam pūjayetpūrvavaddevaṁ sopahāraṁ subhaktitaḥ
Fashioned of four nishkas of gold, marked with auspicious signs, that image should be worshipped as before, with offerings, in deepest devotion.
Verse 55 (skanda.2.72.55)
japākusumamālāṁ ca jātīpuṣpasrajaṁ tathā dattvā puṣpāṁjalīnpāde praṇamya sapradakṣiṇam
Having offered a garland of hibiscus flowers and one of jasmine, having scattered handfuls of flowers at his feet, and having bowed while circumambulating,
Verse 56 (skanda.2.72.56)
yathā hiraṇyakaśipuṁ lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā vyadārayastathā pāpasaṁghaṁ nāśaya pūjitaḥ
