Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 79

The Turning of the Lord's Side, His Awakening, and the Damodara Vow

Chapter 78All chaptersChapter 80

Verse 1 (skanda.2.79.1)

munaya ūcuḥ mune tvattaḥ śrutaṁ samyaṅmāhātmyaṁ jagadīśituḥ nirmālyaprabhṛtīnāṁ ca yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ

The sages said: O sage, we have duly and fully heard from you, in proper order, the glory of the Lord of the world and of his sacred remnant and the rest.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.79.2)

śrotumicchāmahe brahmanyātrāṁ taraphalāni vai śṛṇvatāṁ tattvato brūhi yathoddeśaḥ kṛtaḥ purā

We now wish to hear, O brahmin, of the pilgrimage and its fruits; tell us truly, as it was first declared of old, for we are listening.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.79.3)

jaiminiruvāca sarvathā varttate lokahitāya puruṣottamaḥ nānāguṇavikāsaiśca nānārūpaviceṣṭitaiḥ

Jaimini said: Purushottama ever acts for the welfare of the world, through the unfolding of manifold qualities and manifold forms of activity,

Verse 4 (skanda.2.79.4)

nānārūpavilāsena nānātmā ca jaganmayaḥ ahaṁkāraṁ vinā karmaphalaṁ no dvijasattamāḥ

through manifold sportive forms, being of manifold nature and made of the universe itself; without egoism, O best of brahmins, there is no fruit of action.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.79.5)

ahaṁkāreṇa badhyante kārāgāre bhavābhidhe buddhyahaṁkārayuktastu yatkarmārabhate naraḥ

Men are bound by egoism in the prison called worldly existence; whatever action a man undertakes joined with intellect and egoism,

Verse 6 (skanda.2.79.6)

tasya sadguṇamāpnoti phalaṁ śubhamathāparam buddhistu trividhā teṣāṁ guṇabhedena bhāvitā

obtains its fruit, whether good or otherwise; the intellect that prompts it is threefold, shaped by the distinction of the three qualities.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.79.7)

tatra ye sāttvikāḥ saṁtaḥ phalāvāptiparāṅmukhāḥ bhagavatprītaye karma kurvate te mumukṣavaḥ

Among these, those who are sattvic, indifferent to obtaining fruit, perform action for the pleasure of the Lord alone — they are the seekers of liberation.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.79.8)

parasya sparddhayā kīrtyai phalamuddiśya vā punaḥ bahuvittavyayāyāsai rājasaṁ karma tanvate

Others, out of rivalry or for fame, or aiming at some worldly fruit, undertake rajasic action, with great expenditure of wealth and effort.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.79.9)

gatānugatikā ye ca dṛṣṭārthaikaparāyaṇāḥ prasaṁgātphalamicchaṁtastāmasaṁ karma kurvate

Those who merely follow custom, intent solely on visible ends, desiring fruit out of mere habit, perform tamasic action.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.79.10)

sāttvikānāṁ jagannāthaḥ sarvadā sarvabhāvanaḥ dhyāto dṛṣṭaḥ smṛto vāpi muktidātā na saṁśayaḥ

For the sattvic, Jagannatha, who dwells in every heart forever, whether meditated upon, seen, or even remembered, is the giver of liberation, without doubt.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.79.11)

rājasāstāmasā ye vai mūḍhātmānaḥ phalaiṣiṇaḥ utsavādikṛtaṁ karma manyaṁte phaladāyi te

The rajasic and the tamasic, deluded souls seeking fruit, consider acts such as festivals to be the source of reward.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.79.12)

saṁbhūya bahavo viprā ārabhaṁte'lpakaṁ vidhim bahulāyāsaduḥkhaṁ yatkarma teṣāṁ phalapradam

Many brahmins join together and undertake even a small rite; whatever act involves much toil and hardship becomes, for them, fruit-bearing.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.79.13)

teṣāmuddharaṇārthāya viśvāsāya durātmanām yātrā nānāvidhā viprā varṣe varṣe pravartayet

For their deliverance, and to instill faith in the wicked, one should institute various pilgrimages year after year, O brahmins.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.79.14)

janmasnānaṁ mahāvedyā utsavaśca prakīrtitaḥ mahāyātrādvayaṁ puṁsāṁ kīrtanātpāpanāśanam

The Birth-Bathing at the Mahavedi and the car-festival are proclaimed; these are the two great pilgrimages for men, whose mere recitation destroys sin.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.79.15)

darśanaṁ dakṣiṇāmūrtestathā ca śayanotsavaḥ sarvapāpaharaścaiṣāmutsavo dakṣiṇāyane

The sight of the southward-facing form, and the festival of the Lord's repose, and the festival of the Dakshinayana — all these remove every sin.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.79.16)

ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi pārśvasya parivartanam śayitasya jagadbhartuḥ parivartayituryugam

Now I shall further declare the turning of the side, the rite of turning the World-Lord, who lies in repose.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.79.17)

nabhasya vimale pakṣe saṁprāpte harivāsare viṣṇoḥ svāpagṛhadvāri śanairgatvā praviśya ca

In the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, on the day sacred to Hari, going slowly to the door of Vishnu's sleeping-chamber and entering it,

Verse 18 (skanda.2.79.18)

namaskṛtvā jagannāthaṁ paryaṁke śayitaṁ mudā avacchādya śanairgatvā pūjayedupacārakaiḥ

having bowed with joy to Jagannatha lying upon his couch, one should uncover him and go slowly, worshipping him with ritual honours.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.79.19)

praṇamya bhaktyā tatpādau guhyopaniṣadaiḥ stuvan mantraṁ cemaṁ paṭhandevaṁ svāpayeduttarāmukham

Bowing with devotion at his feet, praising him with the secret Upanishadic hymns, reciting this mantra, one should turn the deity, lying facing north, upon his side:

Verse 20 (skanda.2.79.20)

devadeva jagannātha kalpānāṁ parivartaka parivṛttamidaṁ sarvaṁ yena sthāvarajaṁgamam

'O God of gods, Jagannatha, turner of the kalpas, by whom all this, moving and unmoving, is turned about —

Verse 21 (skanda.2.79.21)

yadicchāceṣṭitaireva jāgratsvapnasuṣuptibhiḥ jagaddhitāya supto'si pārśvena parivarttaya

who, by your very will and activity, through waking, dream, and deep sleep, have lain asleep for the world's good, now turn upon your side.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.79.22)

parivarttanakālo'yaṁ jagataḥ pālanāya te tavājñayā'yaṁ śakro'pi dhvaje tiṣṭhansamutsukaḥ

This is the time of your turning, for the protection of the world; at your command even Indra stands eager upon the banner,

Verse 23 (skanda.2.79.23)

draṣṭuṁ tvatpādakamalaṁ vimucañjaladairjalam mahītalaṁ plāvayati prajāpālanahetukam

to behold the lotus of your feet, releasing water from the clouds, flooding the surface of the earth for the sake of protecting the people.'

Verse 24 (skanda.2.79.24)

iti saṁprārthya deveśaṁ vīpsayā toṣayettataḥ vyajanaiścāmaraiścaiva vījayedanukalpakṛt

Having thus prayed to the Lord of gods, one should please him again and again with such entreaty, and fan him with fans and chowries, in the appropriate manner,

Verse 25 (skanda.2.79.25)

sugandhacandanairasya sarvāṁgaṁ parilepayet svādūnikṣuvikārāṁśca vikṛtaiḥ pāyasaistathā

anoint his whole body with fragrant sandal, and offer sweet preparations of sugarcane and various sweetmeats mixed into payasam,

Verse 26 (skanda.2.79.26)

yāvakāni ca hṛdyāni phalāni vividhāni vai svādūpadaṁśānanyāṁśca ghṛtapūpānsapāyasān

delightful cakes and various fruits, delicious relishes, ghee-fried cakes with payasam,

Verse 27 (skanda.2.79.27)

pakvatāṁbūla patrāṇi sopaskārāṇi ca dvijāḥ śayyāgṛhadvāri vibhoḥ śanairbhaktyā nivedayet

ripe betel-leaves with their condiments, O brahmins — these should be offered slowly, with devotion, at the door of the Lord's sleeping-chamber.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.79.28)

tasmindine hare rūpaṁ bhavedyadi mahāphalam devamuddiśya yaḥ kuryātsarvamakṣayatāṁ vrajet

If on that day any special form of Hari should arise, it bears great fruit; whatever, dedicated to the deity, one performs, becomes imperishable.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.79.29)

snānaṁ dānaṁ japo homastapo jāgaraṇaṁ tathā upavāsaśca niyamo vratāṁte dvijatarpaṇam

Bathing, giving, recitation, fire-oblation, austerity, and keeping vigil likewise, and fasting and observance, and at the vow's end the satisfaction of brahmins —

Verse 30 (skanda.2.79.30)

sāṁgaṁ vratamidaṁ kṛtvā viṣṇulokamavāpnuyāt yaṁ yaṁ kāmayate citte taṁ tamāpnotyasaṁśayam

having performed this vow with all its parts, one attains Vishnuloka; whatever one desires in the heart, that one obtains, without doubt.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.79.31)

ayaṁ vaḥ kathito viprāḥ pārśvaparyāyaṇotsavaḥ anāyāsena lokānāmakṣayaḥ sukhadāyakaḥ

This festival of the turning of the side has been declared to you, O brahmins; it bestows imperishable happiness upon people without effort.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.79.32)

ataḥ paraṁ vai śṛṇuta utthāpanamahotsavam pūjayitvā jagannāthaṁ kaumudyākhye mahotsave

Now further, hear of the great festival of the Awakening; having worshipped Jagannatha at the great festival called Kaumudi,

Verse 33 (skanda.2.79.33)

akṣakrīḍādibhiḥ puṣpavastramālyānulepanaiḥ tatosminpaurṇamāsyāyāṁ rātrāvutsavasaṁyutam

with games of dice and the like, with flowers, cloth, garlands, and unguents; then, on that full-moon night, joined with festivity,

Verse 34 (skanda.2.79.34)

nārikelādibhirdravyaiḥ piṣṭakairarcayeddharim tataḥ prabhāte saṁkalpya kārttike vratamuttamam

one should worship Hari with coconut and other substances, and with rice-cakes; then, in the morning, having made resolve, one should undertake the excellent vow of Kartika.

Verse 35 (skanda.2.79.35)

vratena tenaiva nayedyāvadekādaśī sitā tasyāmutthāpayeddevaṁ susuptaṁ jagadīśvaram

One should continue that same vow until the bright eleventh day; on that day one should awaken the God of gods, who lies deep asleep.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.79.36)

pūrvavatpūjayitvā tu niśāmadhye jagadgurum utthāpayedimaṁ maṁtramāhvayañchanakairmudā

Having worshipped the World-Teacher as before, in the middle of the night, one should awaken him, calling him gently and joyfully with this mantra:

Verse 37 (skanda.2.79.37)

uttiṣṭha devadeveśa tejorāśe jagatpate vīkṣasva sakalaṁ deva prasuptaṁ tava māyayā

'Arise, O Lord of gods, mass of splendour, Lord of the world; behold, O God, all that lies asleep by your own maya.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.79.38)

praphullapuṁḍarīkaśrīhāriṇā nayanena vai tvayā dṛṣṭaṁ jagadidaṁ pāvitryaṁ parameṣyati

By your eye that steals the glory of the full-blown lotus, once this world is seen by you, it shall attain supreme purity.

Verse 39 (skanda.2.79.39)

śrautasmārttāḥ kriyāḥ sarvāḥ pravartaṁte tato dhruvam ityutthāpya jagannāthaṁ veṇuvīṇādikasvanaiḥ

All Shrauta and Smarta rites shall assuredly proceed thereafter.' Having thus awakened Jagannatha, amid the sounds of flutes and vinas,

Verse 40 (skanda.2.79.40)

baṁdimāgadhasūtānāṁ stutibhirmaṁgalasvanaiḥ śaṁkhakāhālamurajavādanairnṛtyagītakaiḥ

amid the auspicious hymns of bards, panegyrists, and heralds, amid the playing of conch, kahala, and drum, and dance and song,

Verse 41 (skanda.2.79.41)

jayaśabdaistathā stotrairnayaṁttaṁ nṛtyamaṇḍapam sugandhatailenābhyajya snāpayetpuruṣottamam

amid cries of 'Victory!' and hymns of praise, one should lead him to the dance-pavilion; having anointed him with fragrant oil, one should bathe Purushottama

Verse 42 (skanda.2.79.42)

pañcāmṛtairnārikelarasaiḥ phalarasaistathā sugandhāmalakenātha yavakalkena lepayet

with the five nectars, with coconut-juice and fruit-juices, and anoint him with fragrant amalaki and barley-paste,

with kusha-water, with jewel-water, and with fragrant waters likewise. Those who behold that deity being thus bathed, filled with joy,

Verse 45 (skanda.2.79.45)

kṣālayanti dṛḍhaṁ paṁkaṁ bahujanmopapāditam tataḥ śrījagadīśasya kroḍe saṁvāsayeddvijāḥ

wash away the firmly-lodged mire accumulated over many births; then, O brahmins, one should seat him in the lap of glorious Jagadisha,

Verse 46 (skanda.2.79.46)

āpādānmūrdhaparyaṁtaṁ sarvāgaṁ parilepayet kuṁkumāgurukastūrīkarpūraiścaṁdanānvitaiḥ

and anoint his entire body from foot to crown with saffron, aloe-wood, musk, and camphor mixed with sandal,

mahopacāraiḥ saṁpūjya viṣṇuṁ nīrājayettataḥ kṛtāṁjalipuṭo bhūtvā prārthayetparayā mudā

having worshipped Vishnu with great ritual honours, one should then wave the lamp before him, and with hands folded in reverence, pray with supreme joy:

Verse 49 (skanda.2.79.49)

carācaramidaṁ sarvaṁ tvadekaśaraṇaṁ vibho anugrahāmṛtālokaiḥ pāvayasva jagadguro

'All this, moving and unmoving, has you alone as its refuge, O Lord; purify it, O World-Teacher, with the nectar-light of your grace.'

Verse 50 (skanda.2.79.50)

nṛtyagītaiḥ prekṣaṇakai rātriśeṣaṁ samāpayet śayanādutthitaṁ devaṁ yaḥ paśyati gadādharam

One should pass the remainder of the night with dance, song, and spectacles. He who beholds the Mace-bearer, risen from his repose,

Verse 51 (skanda.2.79.51)

nidrāṁ mohamayīṁ bhittvā jyotiḥ śāṁtaṁ vrajaṁti te sarvānkāmānavāpnoti yānyānkāmayate hṛdi

Verse 62 (skanda.2.79.62)

lakṣmīṁ padmakarāṁ vāpi tāṁbūlaṁ dadatīṁ tathā pañcāmṛtaiḥ snāpayitvā vāsoyugmena veṣṭayet

and Lakshmi with a lotus in her hand, offering him betel — having bathed them with the five nectars, one should wrap them in a pair of garments,

Verse 63 (skanda.2.79.63)

pūjayedupacāraistaṁ yathāvibhavavistaraiḥ tāmradīpānmṛnmayānvā jvālayedgavyasarpiṣā

and worship them with ritual honours as lavish as one's means allow; one should light copper or clay lamps with cow's ghee,

Verse 64 (skanda.2.79.64)

tailena vā śataṁ dīpavṛkṣāṁścaiva pradāpayet brahmāṇaṁ nāradādīṁśca devarṣīṁstatra pūjayet

or with oil, and offer a hundred lamp-trees as well; there one should worship Brahma, Narada, and the other divine sages,

Verse 65 (skanda.2.79.65)

dāmodarasvarūpānvai brāhmaṇānapi pūjayet vastrayugmairmālyagandhairbhakṣyabhojyaphalaistathā

and worship brahmins as forms of Damodara himself, with pairs of garments, garlands, fragrances, and foods and fruits.

Verse 66 (skanda.2.79.66)

tīrtharājābhiṣekāṁgaṁ pūjākarma yathocitam dāmodarasya tenaiva vidhinehārcanaṁ bhavet

The rite of worship befitting an abhisheka at the king of sacred places should be duly performed; by that very rite, the worship of Damodara is accomplished here.

Verse 67 (skanda.2.79.67)

tadviṣṇoriti mantreṇa brahmādīnapi pūjayet veṇuvīṇādikairgītaiḥ purāṇapaṭhanena ca

With the mantra 'tad viṣṇoḥ,' one should worship Brahma and the others as well, with songs to flute and vina, and with the reading of the Puranas.

Verse 68 (skanda.2.79.68)

mahotsavaṁ prakurvīta tato jāgaraṇena ca tataḥ prabhāte vimale'gnikāryaṁ ca samācaret

One should hold a great festival, and then keep vigil; then, in the pure morning, perform the fire-rite,

Verse 69 (skanda.2.79.69)

aṣṭākṣareṇa maṁtreṇa samidājyacarūnapi lājānmadhusaminmiśrāñjuhuyācca tataḥ śriye

with the eight-syllable mantra, offering fuel-sticks, ghee, and cooked oblations, and parched grain mixed with honey, for the sake of prosperity.

Verse 70 (skanda.2.79.70)

sūktenāṣṭottaraśataṁ brahmādīnāṁ tadantataḥ aṣṭāhutīrvai juhuyātkramādekaikaśastilaiḥ

With the sukta, one hundred and eight times, then finally, in turn, to Brahma and the others, one should offer eight oblations, one for each, with sesame seeds:

Verse 71 (skanda.2.79.71)

brahmāṇaṁ nāradaṁ dakṣaṁ vasiṣṭhaṁ gautamaṁ tathā sanatkumāramatriṁ ca bharadvājaṁ ca kaśyapam

to Brahma, Narada, Daksha, Vasishtha, Gautama likewise, to Sanatkumara, Atri, Bharadvaja, and Kashyapa,

Verse 72 (skanda.2.79.72)

durvāsasamagastyaṁ ca mahādevaṁ tataḥ param vikhyātā vaiṣṇavā hyete viṣṇurūpā na saṁśayaḥ

to Durvasas and Agastya, and finally to Mahadeva — these are renowned as Vaishnavas, forms of Vishnu himself, without doubt.

Verse 73 (skanda.2.79.73)

etānsaṁpūjayanviprānviṣṇuḥ prīṇāti tatkṣaṇāt homāṁte prāśanaṁ kṛtvā dadyādācāryadakṣiṇām

By worshipping these brahmins, Vishnu is pleased instantly; at the end of the fire-rite, having partaken of the offering, one should give the acharya his sacrificial fee,

Verse 74 (skanda.2.79.74)

suvarṇabhūṣitāṁ dhenuṁ vastraṁ dhānyaṁ ca bhaktitaḥ prītaye vāsudevasya bhojayeddvijapuṁgavān

a cow adorned with gold, cloth, and grain, with devotion, and for the pleasure of Vasudeva, feed the foremost brahmins.

Verse 75 (skanda.2.79.75)

sarvopacārasahitaṁ dadyāddāmodaraṁ tataḥ

Then one should give Damodara, together with every ritual honour,

Verse 76 (skanda.2.79.76)

ॐ dāmodara jagannātha tvanmayaṁ viśvameva hi tvadādhāramidaṁ sarvaṁ tvaṁ dharmaḥ sarvabhāvanaḥ tvatprasādādvrataṁ cīrṇaṁ susaṁpūrṇaṁ tadastu me

'Om, Damodara, Jagannatha, the whole universe is made of you alone; all this rests upon you; you are dharma, the very nature of all being; by your grace may this vow, thus performed, be made fully complete for me.'

Verse 77 (skanda.2.79.77)

dāmodaraḥ pradātā ca gṛhītā ca vṛṣadhvajaḥ pradīyate jagannāthaḥ prīyatāṁ me jagadguruḥ

'Damodara is the giver, and the bull-bannered one is the receiver; Jagannatha is given; may my World-Teacher be pleased.'

Verse 78 (skanda.2.79.78)

iti maṁtraṁ japandadyādācāryāya surottamam samāpya pūjayedbhaktyā stūyāttaṁ ca prasādayet

Reciting this mantra, one should give the excellent image to the acharya; having concluded, one should worship him with devotion, praise him, and seek his favour.

Verse 79 (skanda.2.79.79)

ācārye parituṣṭe tu tuṣṭo bhavati mādhavaḥ tattaddravyāṇi ca tato dadyādviprebhya eva hi

When the acharya is satisfied, Madhava too becomes satisfied; one should then give the various articles to the brahmins.

Verse 80 (skanda.2.79.80)

tataḥ svayaṁ vai bhuṁjīta iṣṭaiḥ śiṣṭaiḥ svabaṁdhubhiḥ cāturmāsyavrataṁ cedaṁ pratiṣṭhāpya vidhānataḥ

Then one should himself partake of food, together with dear ones and the learned, one's own kinsmen — having thus established this vow of Chaturmasya according to rite,

Verse 81 (skanda.2.79.81)

yathoktaphalasaṁpanno viṣṇulokamavāpnuyāt śrutismṛtipurāṇeṣu nātaḥ parataraṁ vratam

endowed with the fruit as declared, one attains Vishnuloka; among the Shruti, Smriti, and Puranas, there is no vow higher than this,

Verse 82 (skanda.2.79.82)

yenānuṣṭhitamātreṇa kṛtakṛtyo bhavennaraḥ viṣṇoḥ prītikaraṁ yādṛṅna tathānyadvrataṁ dvijāḥ

by the mere performance of which a man becomes fulfilled; there is no other vow, O brahmins, so pleasing to Vishnu as this one.

Verse 83 (skanda.2.79.83)

tilapātrasahasraistu gavāṁ caivāyutāyutaiḥ kṛṣṇājinaśatenāpi kanyānāmayutena ca

The fruit that one obtains by giving a thousand vessels of sesame, and by ten thousand times ten thousand cows,

Verse 84 (skanda.2.79.84)

dattvā yatphalamāpnoti kṛtvaitadvratamuttamam sārddhatrikoṭitīrthānāmabhiṣekaphalaṁ tathā

and by a hundred black-antelope skins, and by ten thousand maidens — that very fruit is obtained by performing this excellent vow; and likewise the fruit of bathing at three and a half crore sacred places —

Verse 85 (skanda.2.79.85)

prāpnoti tatphalaṁ viprā yaṁ yaṁ kāmayate naraḥ

that fruit, O brahmins, a man obtains, whatever he may desire.
