Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 93

The Glory of the Garuda, Varahi, and Narasimhi Rocks

Chapter 92All chaptersChapter 94

Verse 1 (skanda.2.93.1)

skanda uvāca vainateyaśilāyāstu māhātmyaṁ vada me pitaḥ kiṁ puṇyaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ cāsya anubhāvaṁ ca kiṁ bhavet

Skanda said: O father, tell me the glory of the Vainateya rock. What merit belongs to it, what fruit, and what is its power?

Verse 2 (skanda.2.93.2)

śiva uvāca kaśyapādvinatāgarbhe mahābalaparākramau garuḍāruṇau prajātau dvāvaruṇaḥ sūryasārathiḥ

Shiva said: From Kashyapa, in Vinata's womb, were born two sons of great strength and valor — Garuda and Aruna; of these two, Aruna became the charioteer of the sun.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.93.3)

badaryā dakṣiṇe bhāge gandhamādanaśṛṅgake garuḍastapa ātepe harivāhanakāmyayā

On the peak of Gandhamadana, to the south of Badari, Garuda performed austerity, desiring to become Hari's mount.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.93.4)

phalamūlajalāhāro nirdvaṁdvo japatāṁ varaḥ padaikenopasaṁkramya bhuvi jepe nirāmayaḥ

Living on fruit, roots, and water alone, free from the dualities of pleasure and pain, foremost among those who recite mantras, he stood upon the earth on a single foot and, untroubled by illness, continued his japa.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.93.5)

triṁśadvarṣasahasrāṇi haridarśana lālasaḥ tatastu bhagavānsākṣātpītavāsā nijāyudhaḥ

For thirty thousand years he yearned for the sight of Hari; then the Lord himself, clad in yellow robes and bearing his own weapons —

Verse 6 (skanda.2.93.6)

āvirāsīdyathā prācyāṁ diśīnduriva puṣkalaḥ uvāca vacanaṁ samyaṅmeghagaṁbhīranisvanaḥ

— appeared, like the full moon rising in the eastern sky, and spoke fitting words in a voice as deep as thunder.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.93.7)

tathāpi na bahirvṛttirdadhmau daravaraṁ tataḥ tathāpi na bahirvṛttirgaruḍasya mahātmanaḥ

Yet without any outward gesture, he then blew his excellent conch; and the great-souled Garuda, likewise, showed no outward response, remaining absorbed within.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.93.8)

tataḥ praviśya bhagavānantaraṁ pavanakramāt bahirunmukhatāṁ caiva racayanbahirābabhau

Then the Lord, entering within him by way of the breath's course, and drawing his attention outward, made himself manifest before him.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.93.9)

bhagavantaṁ hariṁ dṛṣṭvā garuḍo gatasādhvasaḥ pulakāṁkita sarvāṁgastuṣṭāva vihitāṁjaliḥ

On beholding the Lord Hari, all of Garuda's fear vanished; his whole body thrilling with rapture, he folded his hands and offered praise.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.93.10)

garuḍa uvāca jayajaya tribhuvanajanamanobhavana vidalitāghaguṇa sakalagīrvāṇavaṁdita caraṇakamalayugalaparimalabahalaripuvanavibhaṁjana vidyotamāna sakalasurāsuramukuṭakoṭivilasita nijapīṭhakamalanirasita nijajanahṛdayatimirapaṭalabahala himakara iva trividhasaṁtāpasaṁdohaharaṇacaraṇa jagadudayasthitilayavilāsavilasita trividhamūrtikīrtivisphūrjita jagadudayasaṁdoha dinakara iva nijajanamānasasarojaṣaṭpadavidita sakalavedavidyotamāna mānasa nijajanamunijanavandita padanakhanīrapavitrīkṛta gīrvāṇamunimānasavandita caraṇarajaḥprasādasārabhūta jagatāmadhīśa namaste namaste

Garuda said: Victory, victory! O you who dwell in the minds of all beings across the three worlds, who shatter the mass of sin, whose pair of lotus feet, worshipped by all the gods, scatters the forest of foes with its fragrance, resplendent, whose own lotus-seat gleams with the crowns of countless gods and demons, who, like the moon, dispel the dense veil of darkness in the hearts of your devotees, whose feet remove the threefold mass of affliction, radiant with the sport of the world's rise, endurance, and dissolution, ablaze with the fame of your threefold form, like the sun to the very arising of the world, known as the bee upon the lotus-pond of your devotees' minds, whose mind shines forth as all the Vedas, whose feet — their nail-water sanctifying — are venerated by your own people and sages, the very essence of the grace found in the dust of your feet, worshipped in the minds of gods and sages — O Lord of all the worlds, salutations to you, salutations!

Verse 11 (skanda.2.93.11)

api ca aṣṭaśaktisahito vanamālī pītacailakusumāvaliśobhaḥ paṅkajākaravirājitapādaḥ pātu māmavahitendriyavargaḥ

And further — may he who, together with his eightfold powers, wears a forest garland, resplendent with a yellow robe and a garland of flowers, whose feet shine like a bed of lotuses, and whose company of senses is ever alert — protect me.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.93.12)

bhaktahṛtkamalarājitamūrtirduṣṭadaityadalanotthitakīrtiḥ baddhaseturavitāśritalokaḥ pātu māmanudinaṁ bhuvaneśaḥ

He whose form is enshrined in the lotus of his devotees' hearts, whose fame arises from the destruction of wicked demons, who built the bridge and protects the worlds that take refuge in him — may that Lord of the universe protect me every day.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.93.13)

sthiracalatrividhatāpahimāṁśurbhāsamānataraṇipratibhāsaḥ eka eva bahudhā kṛtaveṣo māyayāvatu mahāmatirīśaḥ

He who, like the moon, is cooling to the threefold affliction of all moving and unmoving beings, and who himself shines with the brilliance of the blazing sun, who though one alone assumes manifold forms through his maya — may that Lord of great wisdom protect me.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.93.14)

bhaktaciṁtanakṛte kṛtarūpaḥ śaiśavena bahuśāsitabhūpaḥ vedamārga urudhā hitakārī rītirīśiturīyaṁ guṇaśālī

He who takes on form for the sake of his devotees' contemplation, who even in childhood disciplined many kings, who through the path of the Vedas works good in manifold ways — such is the virtue-laden way of the Lord.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.93.15)

yajñabhuggghṛdayabandhanadhārī viśvamūrtirabalāṁśukahārī pālane'pi mahatāṁ bahudeho rāsa eṣa tanumānavatānnaḥ

He who partakes of sacrifices, who holds fast the bonds of the heart, the form of the universe, who took away the garments of the cowherd women, who assumes many bodies even in protecting the great — this very rasa dance is, for us embodied mortals, the means to liberation.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.93.16)

premabhaktipuruṣairupalabhyaḥ pūruṣaḥ kṛtasamastanivāsaḥ dāsyavṛṁdahṛṣito nijadāsaḥ prekṣaṇaikakaruṇovatu viśvam

He who is attained only by men of loving devotion, who has made his dwelling within all things, who, delighted by the company of his own servants, becomes himself a servant — may his single glance of compassion protect the universe.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.93.17)

kaṇṭhalaṁbitatarakṣunakhāgrakruṣṭagoparamaṇīkucabhāraḥ līlayā yuvatibhiḥ kṛtaveṣaḥ śeṣa eṣa bhavatādupaśāṁtyai

With the tips of his nails brushing against the burden of the cowherd women's breasts as they hang close, playfully taking on his form amid the young women — may this very Shesha-form bring us peace.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.93.18)

daṇḍapāṇirayameva janānāṁ śāsitātmaniyamoktahitānām pāvanāya mahatāmanuśālī viśvaduḥkhaśamano bhavatānnaḥ

He alone is the wielder of the rod who, by governing people through his own ordained rules, works their good; gracious toward the purification of the great, may he who allays the suffering of the universe be ours.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.93.19)

evaṁ stutastataḥ sākṣādgaruḍena mahātmanā pūjārthamājuhāvaināṁ gaṁgāṁ tripathagāminīm

Thus praised in person by the great-souled Garuda, the Lord summoned Ganga, who flows through the three worlds, for the sake of worship.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.93.20)

tataḥ paṁcamukhī sākṣādāvirāsīnnagopari tenodakena pādārghaṁ cakāra vinatāsutaḥ

Then the five-faced Ganga appeared in person atop that mountain; with that very water, the son of Vinata offered the foot-worship libation.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.93.21)

vriyatāṁ vara ityukto garuḍo hariṇā tataḥ tavaikavāhanaḥ śrīmānbalavīryaparākramaḥ ajeyo devadaityānāṁ syāmahaṁ te prasādataḥ

When Hari said, "Ask for a boon," Garuda replied: May I become your one and only mount, endowed with strength, vigor, and valor, and, by your grace, invincible to both gods and demons.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.93.22)

iyaṁ mannāmavikhyātā sarvapāpaharā śilā etasyāḥ smaraṇātpuṁsāṁ viṣavyādhirna jāyatām

"May this rock, renowned by my very name, remove every sin; by merely remembering it, may men never suffer the affliction of poison."

Verse 23 (skanda.2.93.23)

evamuktvā tatastūṣṇīṁ babhūva vinatāsutaḥ omityuktvā tato viṣṇuruvācedaṁ vaco hitam

Having said this, the son of Vinata fell silent. Then Vishnu, saying "Om," spoke these beneficial words.

Verse 24 (skanda.2.93.24)

badarīṁ tvaṁ prayāhīti nāradena niṣevitām snānaṁ nāradatīrthādāvupavāsatrayaṁ śuciḥ kṛtvā maddarśanaṁ tatra sulabhaṁ te bhaviṣyati

"Go to Badari, frequented by Narada; by bathing at Narada-tirtha and elsewhere, becoming pure, and observing a three-day fast, you shall there easily obtain the sight of me."

Verse 25 (skanda.2.93.25)

ityuktvāntarddadhe viṣṇustaḍitsaudāmanī yathā garuḍastu tataḥ śīghramāgatya badarīṁ mudā

Having said this, Vishnu vanished like a flash of lightning. Garuda then swiftly and joyfully came to Badari.

Verse 26 (skanda.2.93.26)

vahnitīrthaṁ samāsādya śilāmāśritya tatparaḥ snātvā nāradatīrtheṣu vratacaryāmathākarot

Reaching the Agni-tirtha and taking refuge upon the rock, he, with focused devotion, bathed at the Narada-tirthas and then undertook the vow.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.93.27)

tatastu nārade tīrthe dṛṣṭvā bhagavataḥ sthitim namaskṛtya vidhānena tadājñātaḥ puraṁ yayau

Then, having beheld the Lord's presence at Narada-tirtha, and bowed to him according to rite, he departed for his own city, having received the Lord's leave.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.93.28)

tataḥ prabhṛti trailokye gāruḍīti śilocyate

From that time on, that rock has been called Garudi throughout the three worlds.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.93.29)

skanda uvāca vārāhyā vada māhātmyaṁ kīdṛśaṁ hīśvareśvara kiṁ puṇyaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ tasyā abhidhānaṁ tathā katham

Skanda said: O Lord even of the lords, tell me what the glory of the Varahi rock is. What merit and what fruit does it hold, and how did it come by that name?

Verse 30 (skanda.2.93.30)

śiva uvāca rasātalātsamuddhṛtya mahīṁ daivatavairiṇam hiraṇyākṣaṁ raṇe hatvā badarīṁ samupāgataḥ

Shiva said: Having raised the earth up from the netherworld, and slain in battle Hiranyaksha, the enemy of the gods, the Lord came to Badari.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.93.31)

ākalpāṁtaṁ mahādevo yogadhāraṇayā sthitaḥ badaryāḥ sauṣṭhavādeva vidadhe sthitimātmanaḥ

That great Lord remained absorbed in yogic concentration until the end of the kalpa; it was precisely because of Badari's excellence that he established his abode there.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.93.32)

śilārūpeṇa bhagavānsthitiṁ tatra cakāra ha tatra gatvā tu manujaḥ snātvā gaṁgājale'male

The Lord established his presence there in the form of a rock. A man who goes there and bathes in the pure water of the Ganga —

Verse 33 (skanda.2.93.33)

dānaṁ dattvā svaśaktyā vai gaṁgāṁbhaḥ śāntamānasaḥ ahorātre sthito bhūtvā japedekāgramānasaḥ

— and who gives charity according to his means, remains there for a day and night beside the Ganga's waters with a tranquil mind, and recites japa with single-pointed attention —

Verse 34 (skanda.2.93.34)

śilāyāṁ devadṛṣṭiśca tasya puṁsaḥ prajāyate bahunā kimihoktena yadvadiṣyati sādhakaḥ

— that man attains the very sight of the deity within the rock. What need is there to say more? Whatever the practitioner desires,

Verse 35 (skanda.2.93.35)

tattasya sidhyati kṣipraṁ yadyapi syātsuduṣkaram

— that is quickly accomplished for him, however difficult it may otherwise be.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.93.36)

skanda uvāca nārasiṁhīśilāyāstu māhātmyaṁ vada me prabho tvatprasādānmahādeva durllabhaṁ śrutavānaham

Skanda said: O Lord, now tell me the glory of the Narasimhi rock. O Mahadeva, it is only by your grace that I have heard such rare knowledge.

Verse 37 (skanda.2.93.37)

śiva uvāca hiraṇyakaśipuṁ hatvā nakhāgreṇaiva līlayā krodhāgninā pradīptāṁgaḥ pralayānalasannibhaḥ

Shiva said: Having slain Hiranyakashipu with the mere tips of his claws, as if in play, his limbs blazing with the fire of fury, resembling the fire of universal dissolution —

Verse 38 (skanda.2.93.38)

tadā devaiḥ samāgatya sthitvā dūre dayāluvhiḥ stuto'sau bhagavāndevo līlayā dhṛtavigrahaḥ

Then the compassionate gods, gathering together and standing at a distance, praised that divine Lord who had assumed the form as a mere sport.

Verse 39 (skanda.2.93.39)

tadā prasanno harirugravikramaḥ svatejasā vyāptasurāsurottamaḥ uvāca matto varamāvṛṇīdhvaṁ gīrvāṇanirvāṇa sukhaikahetum

Then Hari of terrible valor, pervading with his own splendor even the foremost among gods and demons, being pleased, said: "Ask of me a boon that would be the sole cause of the gods' supreme bliss and peace."

Verse 40 (skanda.2.93.40)

tadāsurāṇāmadhipaḥ svayaṁbhūruvāca vākyaṁ smitaśobhitānanaḥ rūpaṁ tavātyugramaśeṣadehināṁ bhayāvahaṁ saṁhara nārasiṁha

Then the self-born lord of the demons, Brahma, his face graced with a smile, spoke: "O Narasimha, this exceedingly fierce form of yours strikes terror in every creature — withdraw it."

Verse 41 (skanda.2.93.41)

anekadhaitadvidhivadvidhāya nidhāya śailādiṣu divyamūrtim uvāca kiṁ vaḥ prakaromi kṛtyamahaṁ prasannastridaśāḥ paraṁtapāḥ

Then, duly dividing that divine form into many, and establishing it upon mountains and the like, he said, pleased: "O gods, tormentors of your foes, what deed shall I do for you? Speak."

Verse 42 (skanda.2.93.42)

tato'marā ūcuranena caiva rūpeṇa saṁkṣobhitaviśvamūrte praśāṁtamaṁtaḥsukhahetubaṁdhi caturbhujatvaṁ varamīpsitaṁ naḥ

Then the immortals said: "O form of the universe, this very form has thrown the whole world into turmoil. What we desire as a boon is your peaceful four-armed form, the cause of inner bliss and benevolence."

Verse 43 (skanda.2.93.43)

tato harirvīkṣya nirīkṣaṇena divyena viśvaṁ prayayau viśālām gaṁgājale krīḍati viṣṭacetāḥ surāsurebhyo bhagavānuvāca

Then Hari, surveying the universe with his divine gaze, set out for Vishala; sporting in the waters of the Ganga, his mind fixed there, the Lord spoke to the gods and demons —

Verse 44 (skanda.2.93.44)

tato'marāḥ śāntabhayā athainaṁ nirīkṣya devaṁ jalamadhyasaṁstham natvā parikramya tadā samāyayurnirūḍhabhāvāḥ svapuraṁ tataḥ kramāt

Then, their fear stilled, the immortals, beholding that god established in the midst of the water, bowed, circumambulated him, and, their hearts settled, returned in due order each to his own abode.

Verse 45 (skanda.2.93.45)

tataḥ samastā ṛṣayastapodhanāḥ samāyayurbhaktibharāvanamrāḥ nṛsiṁhamatyadbhutavikamaṁ hariṁ samīḍire baddhakarā vacobhiḥ

Then all the sages, rich in austerity, came bowed down under the weight of their devotion, and, hands joined, praised with their words Hari in his form of Narasimha, of most wondrous valor.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.93.46)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ namonamaste jagatāmadhīśa viśveśa viśvābhaya viśvamūrte kṛpāṁburāśe bhajanīyatīrtha pādāṁbuja śrīśa dayāṁ vidhehi

The sages said: Salutations again and again to you, O Lord of all the worlds, O Vishvesha, giver of fearlessness to the universe, O form of the universe. O ocean of compassion, O ford worthy of worship, O Lord of Shri, show us grace through your lotus feet.

Verse 47 (skanda.2.93.47)

eko'si nānā nijamāyayā svayā ghaṭe payo yadvadupādhibhinnam bhaktecchayopāttavicitravigraha prasīda viśvānana viśvabhāvana

Though you are one, you appear as many through your own maya, just as water appears distinct according to its containers. O you who assume wondrous forms at your devotees' wish, O face of the universe, O nurturer of the universe, be gracious to us.

Verse 48 (skanda.2.93.48)

tataḥ prasanno bhagavānnṛsiṁhaḥ siṁhavikramaḥ uvāca vacanaṁ cāru varaṁ me vriyatāmiti

Then the Lord Narasimha, of lion-like valor, being pleased, spoke gracious words: "Ask a boon of me."

Verse 49 (skanda.2.93.49)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ yadi prasanno bhagavankṛpayā jagatāṁ pate viśālā na parityājyā varo'smākamabhīpsitaḥ

The sages said: O Lord, master of the worlds, if you are graciously pleased, then this is the boon we desire — that you never abandon Vishala.

Verse 50 (skanda.2.93.50)

evamastu tataḥ sarve svāśramaṁ hyṛṣayo yayuḥ nṛsiṁho'pi śilārūpī jalakrīḍāparo'bhavat

"So be it" — saying this, all the sages departed for their own hermitages. Narasimha too, taking the form of the rock, became absorbed in play within the waters.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.93.51)

upavāsatrayaṁ kṛtvā japadhyānaparāyaṇaḥ nṛsiṁharūpiṇaṁ sākṣātpaśyatyeva na saṁśayaḥ

Whoever, having observed a three-day fast, remains devoted to japa and meditation, will without doubt behold the very form of Narasimha in person.

Verse 52 (skanda.2.93.52)

ya etacchraddhayā martyaḥ śṛṇoti śrāvayañchuciḥ sarvapāpavinirmukto vaikuṁṭhe vasatiṁ labhet

Whatever mortal hears this with faith, or, being pure, recites it to others, is freed from every sin and attains a dwelling in Vaikuntha.
