Chapter 14All chaptersChapter 16

Verse 1 (skanda.3.15.1)

śrīsūta uvāca brahmakuṇḍe mahāpuṇye snānaṁ kṛtvā samāhitaḥ naro hanūmataḥ kuṇḍamatha gacchedvijottamāḥ

Suta said: Having bathed with a composed mind in the greatly meritorious Brahma-kunda, O best of brahmins, a man should then go to Hanuman's kunda.

Verse 2 (skanda.3.15.2)

purā hateṣu rakṣaḥsu samāpte raṇakarmaṇi rāmādiṣu nivṛtteṣu gaṁdhamādanaparvate

Long ago, when the rakshasas had been slain and the work of war was over, when Rama and the others had withdrawn to Mount Gandhamadana,

Verse 3 (skanda.3.15.3)

sarva lokopakārāya hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ sarvatīrthottamaṁ cakre svanāmnā tīrthamuttamam

for the benefit of all the worlds, Hanuman, the son of Vayu, created an excellent tirtha, best among all tirthas, under his own name.

Verse 4 (skanda.3.15.4)

viditvā vaibhavaṁ yasya svayaṁ rudreṇa sevyate tasya tīrthasya sadṛśaṁ na bhūtaṁ na bhaviṣyati

Having known its greatness, it is itself frequented by Rudra; there has been, and there will be, none equal to that tirtha.

Verse 5 (skanda.3.15.5)

yatra snātā narā yāṁti śivalokaṁ sanātanam yasmiṁstīrthe mahāpuṇye mahāpātakanāśane

Bathing there, men go to the eternal world of Shiva - that tirtha, greatly meritorious, destroys great sins.

Verse 6 (skanda.3.15.6)

sarvalokopakārāya nirmite vāyusūnunā sarvāṇi narakāṇyāsañcchūnyānyeva cirāya vai

Created by the son of Vayu for the benefit of all the worlds - because of it, all the hells have long since become empty indeed.

Verse 7 (skanda.3.15.7)

vaibhavaṁ tasya tīrthasya śaṁkaro vetti vā na vā yatra dharmasakhonāma rājā kekayavaṁśajaḥ

Even Shankara may or may not know the greatness of that tirtha - where a king named Dharmasakha, born in the Kekaya lineage,

Verse 8 (skanda.3.15.8)

bhaktyā saha purā snātvā śataṁ putrānavāpta vān ṛṣaya ūcuḥ sūta dharmasakhasyādya caritaṁ vaktumarhasi hanūmatkuṇḍatīrthe yo lebhe snātvā śataṁ sutān

having bathed there with devotion long ago, obtained a hundred sons. The sages said: O Suta, you should now tell us the story of Dharmasakha, who obtained a hundred sons by bathing at the tirtha of Hanuman-kunda.

Verse 9 (skanda.3.15.9)

śrīsūta uvāca śṛṇudhvamṛṣayo yūyaṁ caritaṁ tasya bhūpateḥ

Suta said: Listen, O sages, to the story of that king.

Verse 10 (skanda.3.15.10)

adya dharmasakhasyāhaṁ pravakṣyāmi samāsataḥ rājā dharmasakhonāma vijitāriḥ sudhārmikaḥ

Today I shall relate in brief the story of Dharmasakha. There was a king named Dharmasakha, a conqueror of his foes, greatly righteous,

Verse 11 (skanda.3.15.11)

babhūva nītimānpūrvaṁ prajāpālanatatparaḥ tasya bhāryāśataṁ viprā vabhūva patidaivatam

who was of old possessed of good policy, devoted to protecting his subjects. He, O brahmins, had a hundred wives, all devoted to their husband as their deity.

Verse 12 (skanda.3.15.12)

sa pālayanmahīṁ rājā saśailavanakānanām tāsu bhāryāsu tanayaṁ nāviṁdadvaṁśavarddhanam

That king, ruling the earth with its mountains, forests and woods, did not obtain among those wives a son to continue his line.

Verse 13 (skanda.3.15.13)

putrārthaṁ sa mahīpālo bahūyatnānathākarot5 akarocca mahādānaṁ putrārthaṁ sa mahīpatiḥ

That lord of the earth made many efforts for the sake of a son; and that lord of the earth made great gifts for the sake of a son.

Verse 14 (skanda.3.15.14)

aśvamedhādibhiryajñairayajacca surānprati tulāpuruṣamukhyāni dadau dānāni bhūriśaḥ

He worshipped the gods with sacrifices beginning with the Ashvamedha, and gave abundant gifts, foremost among them the Tulapurusha.

Verse 15 (skanda.3.15.15)

āmadhyarātramannāni sarvebhyo'pyanivāritam prāyacchadbahusūpāni sasyopetāni bhūmipaḥ

That lord of the earth gave food unhindered to all, even up to midnight, abundant dishes furnished with grain.

Verse 16 (skanda.3.15.16)

pitṝnuddiśya ca śrāddhamakarodvidhipūrvakam saṁtānadāyino maṁtrāñjajāpa niyatedriyaḥ

He duly performed shraddha rites for his ancestors, and, with senses restrained, recited mantras that grant progeny.

Verse 17 (skanda.3.15.17)

evamādīnbahūndharmānputrārthaṁ kṛtavānnṛpaḥ putramuddiśya satataṁ kurvandharmānanuttamān

Thus the king performed many such meritorious acts for the sake of a son, constantly doing supreme acts of dharma with a son in view.

Verse 18 (skanda.3.15.18)

rājā dīrgheṇa kālena vṛddhatāṁ pratyapadyata kadācittasya vṛddhasya yatamānasya bhūpateḥ

In the course of a long time the king came to old age. Once, while that aged king, ever striving,

Verse 19 (skanda.3.15.19)

putrassucaṁdranāmābhūjjyeṣṭhapatnyāṁ manoramaḥ jātaṁ putraṁ jananyastāḥ sarvā vaiṣamyavarjitāḥ

a lovely son named Suchandra was born to his eldest wife. All those mothers, free of any partiality,

Verse 20 (skanda.3.15.20)

samaṁ saṁvarddhayāmāsuḥ kṣīrādibhiranuttamāḥ rājñaśca sarvamātṝṇāṁ paurāṇāmmaṁtriṇāṁ tathā

raised him equally, most excellently, with milk and the like. He became a son who brought joy to the mind and eyes of the king, of all the mother-wives, of the citizens, and of the ministers alike;

Verse 21 (skanda.3.15.21)

manonayanasaṁtoṣajanako'yaṁ suto'bhavat lālayānaḥ sutaṁ rājā mudaṁ lebhe parātparām

fondling his son, the king obtained the very highest joy.

Verse 22 (skanda.3.15.22)

āṁdolikāśayānasya sūnostasya kadācana vṛściko'kuṭṭayatpāde pucchenodyadviṣāgninā

Once, as that son lay in a swinging cradle, a scorpion, with its tail bearing rising poison-fire, stung him on the foot.

Verse 23 (skanda.3.15.23)

kuṭṭanādvṛścikasyāsāvarudattanayo bhṛśam tatastanmātaraḥ sarvāḥ prārudañcchokakātarāḥ

From the scorpion's sting that son wept violently; then all his mothers wept too, overwhelmed with grief,

Verse 24 (skanda.3.15.24)

parivāryātmajaṁ viprāḥ sadhvaniḥ saṁkulo'bhavat ārtadhvaniṁ sa śuśrāva rājā dharmasakhastadā

surrounding the child, O brahmins, and there arose a tumult of wailing. King Dharmasakha then heard that cry of distress,

Verse 25 (skanda.3.15.25)

upaviṣṭaḥ sabhāmadhye sahāmātyapurohitaḥ atha prātiṣṭhipadrājā sauvidallaṁ sa veditum

seated as he was in the midst of the assembly with his ministers and priest. Then the king dispatched a chamberlain to find out.

Verse 26 (skanda.3.15.26)

antaḥpurabahirdvāraṁ sauvidallaḥ sametya saḥ ṣaṁḍhavṛddhānsamāhūya vākyametadabhāṣata

That chamberlain, coming to the outer door of the inner apartments, summoned the aged eunuchs and spoke these words:

Verse 27 (skanda.3.15.27)

ṣaṁḍhāḥ kimarthamadhunā rudatyantaḥpura striyaḥ tatparijñāyatāṁ tatra gatvā rodanakāraṇam

"O eunuchs, why are the women of the inner apartments weeping just now? Go there and find out the cause of the weeping.

Verse 28 (skanda.3.15.28)

etadarthaṁ hi māṁ rājā prerayāmāsa saṁsadi ityuktāstu parijñāya nidānaṁ rodanasya te

For this very purpose the king has sent me in the assembly." Thus addressed, having ascertained the cause of the weeping,

Verse 29 (skanda.3.15.29)

nirgamyāṁtaḥpurāttasmai yathāvṛttaṁ nyavedayat sa ṣaṁḍhakavacaḥ śrutvā sauvidallaḥ sabhāṁ gataḥ

they came out from the inner apartments and reported to him what had happened. Having heard the eunuchs' words, that chamberlain went to the assembly

Verse 30 (skanda.3.15.30)

rājñe nivedayāmāsa putraṁ vṛścikapīḍitam tato dharmasakho rājā śrutvā vṛttāṁtamīdṛśam

and reported to the king that the prince had been afflicted by a scorpion. Then King Dharmasakha, hearing such news,

Verse 31 (skanda.3.15.31)

tvaramāṇaḥ samutthāya sāmātyaḥ sapurohitaḥ praviśyāṁtaḥpuraṁ sārddhaṁ māṁtrikairviṣahā ribhiḥ

rose up in haste, together with his ministers and priest, and, entering the inner apartments along with mantra-healers skilled in destroying poison,

Verse 32 (skanda.3.15.32)

cikitsayāmāsa sutamauṣadhādyairanekaśaḥ jātasvāsthyaṁ tataḥ putraṁ lālayitvā sa bhūpatiḥ

(31-32) treated his son with many medicines and remedies. Then, when the son had regained health, that lord of the earth, having fondled him

Verse 33 (skanda.3.15.33)

mānayitvā ca maṁtrajñānratnakāṁ canamauktikaiḥ niṣkramyāṁtaḥpurādrājā bhṛśaṁ ciṁtāsamākulaḥ

and honoured the mantra-knowers with jewels, gold and pearls, the king, greatly troubled with anxiety, came out of the inner apartments,

Verse 34 (skanda.3.15.34)

ṛtvikpurohitāmātyaistāṁ sabhāṁ sanupāviśat tatra dharmasakho rājā samāsīno varāsane uvācedaṁ vaco yuktamṛtvijaḥ sapurohitān

and, with his officiating priests, chief priest, and ministers, entered that assembly. There King Dharmasakha, seated on an excellent throne, spoke this fitting speech to the officiating priests together with the chief priest:

Verse 35 (skanda.3.15.35)

dharmasakha uvāca duḥkhāyaivaikaputratvaṁ bhavati brāhmaṇo ttamāḥ

Dharmasakha said: "Having only a single son, O best of brahmins, leads only to sorrow.

Verse 36 (skanda.3.15.36)

ekaputratvato tṛṇāṁ varā caiva hyaputratā nityaṁ vyapāyayuktatvādvarameva hyaputratā ahaṁ bhāryāśataṁ viprā udavoḍha viciṁtya tu

Better than having only one son is even having no son at all, since single-sonship is ever attended by anxiety - childlessness itself is truly the better state. O brahmins, having reflected well, I married a hundred wives,

Verse 37 (skanda.3.15.37)

vayaśca samatikrāṁtaṁ sapatnīkasya me dvijāḥ prāṇā mama ca bhāryāṇāmasminputre vyavasthitāḥ

and my age, O twice-born, along with my wives, has now passed by. The very life-breath of myself and of my wives rests upon this one son;

Verse 38 (skanda.3.15.38)

tannāśe mama bhāryāṇāṁ sarvāsāṁ ca mṛtirdhruvā mamāpi prāṇanāśaḥ syādekaputrasya māraṇe

should he perish, the death of all my wives is certain, and my own life too would be lost should this only son die.

Verse 39 (skanda.3.15.39)

ato me bahuputratvaṁ kenopāyena vai bhavet tamupāyaṁ mama brūta brāhmaṇā vedavi ttamāḥ

Therefore, by what means might I obtain many sons? Tell me that means, O brahmins, most learned in the Vedas,

Verse 40 (skanda.3.15.40)

ekaikaḥ śatabhāryāsu putro me syādyathā guṇī tatkarma vrata yūyaṁ tu śāstramālokya dharmataḥ

so that among my hundred wives I might have one virtuous son each. Consider that rite - ordain it for me, having looked into the scriptures, in accordance with dharma.

Verse 41 (skanda.3.15.41)

mahatā laghunā vāpi karmaṇā duṣkareṇa vā phalaṁ yadyapi tatsādhyaṁ kariṣye'haṁ na saṁśayaḥ

Whether by a great rite or a small one, or by one difficult to perform - even if the fruit is attainable only with difficulty, I shall perform it, without doubt.

Verse 42 (skanda.3.15.42)

yuṣmābhiruditaṁ karma kariṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ kṛtameva hi tadvitta śape'haṁ sukṛtairmama

Whatever rite is prescribed by you, I shall perform without doubt; consider it as good as already done - I swear it by my own good deeds.

Verse 43 (skanda.3.15.43)

asti cedīdṛśaṁ karma yena putraśataṁ bhavet tatkarma kutra kartavyaṁ mayeti vadatādhunā

If there exists such a rite by which I might have a hundred sons, tell me now where that rite is to be performed by me."

Verse 44 (skanda.3.15.44)

iti pṛṣṭāstadā rājñā ṛtvijaḥ sapurohitāḥ saṁbhūya sarve rājānamidamūcuḥ suniścitam

Thus questioned by the king, the officiating priests together with the chief priest, having conferred together, said this with firm resolve to the king.

Verse 45 (skanda.3.15.45)

ṛtvija ūcuḥ asti rājanpravakṣyāmo yena putraśataṁ tava bhaveddharmeṇa mahatā śatabhāryāsu kaikaya

The priests said: "There is such a means, O king; we shall tell you, by which, O Kaikeya, through a great meritorious rite, you may have a hundred sons among your hundred wives.

Verse 46 (skanda.3.15.46)

asti kaścinmahāpuṇyo gandhamādanaparvataḥ dakṣiṇāṁbudhimadhye yaḥ seturūpeṇa vartate

There is a certain greatly meritorious Mount Gandhamadana, which stands in the form of the Setu in the midst of the southern ocean,

Verse 47 (skanda.3.15.47)

siddhacāraṇagaṁdharvadevarṣigaṇasaṁkulaḥ darśanātsparśanānnṛṇāṁ mahāpātakanāśanaḥ

thronged with Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas and hosts of divine sages, which destroys great sins of men merely by sight and touch.

Verse 48 (skanda.3.15.48)

tatrāsti hanumatkuṁḍamiti lokeṣu viśrutam mahāduḥkhapraśamanaṁ svargamokṣaphalapradam

There exists there Hanuman-kunda, renowned among the worlds, which pacifies great sorrow and bestows the fruit of heaven and liberation,

Verse 49 (skanda.3.15.49)

narakakleśaśamanaṁ tathā dāridryamocanam putrapradamaputrāṇāmastrīṇāṁ strīpadaṁ nṛṇām

which pacifies the suffering of hell, and likewise releases from poverty; it grants sons to the sonless, and to men without wives it grants the status of a wife (i.e. grants a wife).

Verse 50 (skanda.3.15.50)

tatra tvaṁ prayataḥ snātvā sarvābhīṣṭapradāyinīm putrīyeṣṭiṁ ca tattīre kuruṣva susamāhitaḥ

There, having bathed with purity, you should, with a composed mind, perform on its bank the Putriya-ishti, the sacrifice that grants all desires.

Verse 51 (skanda.3.15.51)

tena te śatabhāryāsu pratyekaṁ tanayo nṛpa ekaikastu bhavecchīghraṁ mā kuru ṣvātra saṁśayam

By that, O king, one son each will quickly be born to each of your hundred wives - entertain no doubt about this."

Verse 52 (skanda.3.15.52)

tathokto nṛpatirvipraiṛtvikbhiḥ sapurohitaiḥ tatkṣaṇenaiva ṛtvikbhirbhāryābhiśca purodhasā

Thus addressed by the brahmin priests together with the chief priest, the king, that very moment, together with the priests, his wives, and the chief priest,

Verse 53 (skanda.3.15.53)

vṛtomātyaiśca bhṛtyaiśca yajñasaṁbhārasaṁyutaḥ prayayau dakṣiṇāṁbhodhau gandhamādanaparvatam

attended by ministers and servants, furnished with the materials for sacrifice, set out for Mount Gandhamadana in the southern ocean.

Verse 54 (skanda.3.15.54)

hanumatkuṁḍamāsādya tatra sasnau sasainikaḥ māsamātraṁ sa tattīre nyavasa tsnānamācaran

Having reached Hanuman-kunda, he bathed there together with his army; he dwelt on its bank for a full month, practising the bath daily.

Verse 55 (skanda.3.15.55)

tato vasaṁte saṁprāpte caitramāsi nṛpottamaḥ iṣṭimārabdhavāṁstatra putrīyāṁ sapurohitaḥ

Then, when spring had come, in the month of Chaitra, that best of kings, together with his chief priest, began there the Putriya sacrifice.

Verse 56 (skanda.3.15.56)

samyakkarmāṇi cakruste ṛtvijaḥ sapurodhasaḥ sapatnīkasya rājarṣestathādharmasakhasya tu

The priests, together with the chief priest, duly performed the rites for that royal sage Dharmasakha, together with his wives.

Verse 57 (skanda.3.15.57)

iṣṭau tasya samāptāyāṁ hanūmatkuṁḍatīrataḥ purohito hutocchiṣṭaṁ prāśa yadrājayoṣitaḥ

When his sacrifice was concluded, the chief priest, from the bank of Hanuman-kunda, gave the remains of the oblation for the king's wives to partake.

Verse 58 (skanda.3.15.58)

tato dharmasakho rājā hanūmatkuṁḍavāriṣu samyakcakārāvabhṛthasnānaṁ bhāryāśatānvitaḥ

Then King Dharmasakha, together with his hundred wives, duly performed the concluding (avabhritha) bath in the waters of Hanuman-kunda.

Verse 59 (skanda.3.15.59)

ṛtvikbhyo dakṣiṇāḥ prādādasaṁkhyātāstu bhūriśaḥ grāmāṁśca pradadau rājā bāhmaṇebhyo dvijottamāḥ

He gave to the priests countless, abundant gifts of dakshina; and, O best of brahmins, the king gave villages to the brahmins.
