Verse 1 (skanda.3.17.1)

श्रीसूत उवाच। पुनरित्याह कक्षीवान्पितरं तं मुनीश्वराः। यथोदंकेन गुरुणा प्रेषितोऽहमिहा धुना

śrīsūta uvāca punarityāha kakṣīvānpitaraṁ taṁ munīśvarāḥ yathodaṁkena guruṇā preṣito'hamihā dhunā

Suta said: Again Kakshivan spoke to his father, O lords of sages: "As I was sent here now by my teacher Udanka,

Verse 2 (skanda.3.17.2)

समागतोस्मि तीर्थेऽस्मिन्नागस्त्ये मुनिसत्तम। स्वनयस्य सुतोद्वाहसिद्ध्यर्थं गुरुचोदितः

samāgatosmi tīrthe'sminnāgastye munisattama svanayasya sutodvāhasiddhyarthaṁ gurucoditaḥ

I have come to this tirtha of Agastya, O best of sages, urged by my teacher for the accomplishment of my marriage to Svanaya's daughter.

Verse 3 (skanda.3.17.3)

उपायं तन्निगदितमत्र कुर्व न्न्यवर्तिषम्। वर्षत्रयावसाने मामुद्वाहोपायसंयुतम्

upāyaṁ tannigaditamatra kurva nnyavartiṣam varṣatrayāvasāne māmudvāhopāyasaṁyutam

Performing here the means that he told me, at the end of three years, me, furnished with the means for marriage,

Verse 4 (skanda.3.17.4)

स्वनयोत्रैव तिष्ठन्तमाससाद यदृच्छया। स च मामेत्य कन्यां ते दास्यामीति वचोऽब्रवीत्

svanayotraiva tiṣṭhantamāsasāda yadṛcchayā sa ca māmetya kanyāṁ te dāsyāmīti vaco'bravīt

Svanaya, staying right here, met by chance; and he, coming to me, spoke the words: 'I shall give you my daughter.'

Verse 5 (skanda.3.17.5)

ततोस्मदनुरोधेन त्वामाह्वयदयं नृपः। इतीरयित्वा पितरं कक्षीवान्विरराम सः

tatosmadanurodhena tvāmāhvayadayaṁ nṛpaḥ itīrayitvā pitaraṁ kakṣīvānvirarāma saḥ

Then, at my request, this king has invited you." Having said this to his father, Kakshivan fell silent.

Verse 6 (skanda.3.17.6)

सुदर्शनोऽथ विप्रेंद्रः पुरोधाः स्वन यस्य सः। प्रययौ राजसविधं स्वनयाय निवेदितुम्

sudarśano'tha vipreṁdraḥ purodhāḥ svana yasya saḥ prayayau rājasavidhaṁ svanayāya niveditum

Then Sudarshana, foremost of brahmins, the chief priest of Svanaya, went to the king's side to report to Svanaya.

Verse 7 (skanda.3.17.7)

राजानं तं समासाद्य स्वनयं स सुदर्शनः। प्राप्तं निवेदयामास तं दीर्घतमसं मुनिम्

rājānaṁ taṁ samāsādya svanayaṁ sa sudarśanaḥ prāptaṁ nivedayāmāsa taṁ dīrghatamasaṁ munim

Having approached King Svanaya, that Sudarshana reported to him the arrival of the sage Dirghatamas.

Verse 8 (skanda.3.17.8)

ततः स राजा स्वनयो मुनिं प्राप्तं पुरोहितात्। श्रुत्वा विनिर्ययौ द्रष्टुं महसा पटमण्डपात्

tataḥ sa rājā svanayo muniṁ prāptaṁ purohitāt śrutvā viniryayau draṣṭuṁ mahasā paṭamaṇḍapāt

Then King Svanaya, having heard from his chief priest that the sage had arrived, came out swiftly from his pavilion tent to see him.

Verse 9 (skanda.3.17.9)

अगस्त्यतीर्थतीरे तं सपुत्रमृषि सत्तमम्। ददर्श राजा स्वनयो ब्रह्माणमिव देवराट्

agastyatīrthatīre taṁ saputramṛṣi sattamam dadarśa rājā svanayo brahmāṇamiva devarāṭ

On the bank of Agastya-tirtha, King Svanaya beheld that best of sages together with his son, as the king of gods beholds Brahma.

Verse 10 (skanda.3.17.10)

ववंदे दीर्घतमसश्चरणौ लोकमंगलौ। उत्थाप्य नृपतिं विप्रास्तदा दीर्घतमा मुनिः।

vavaṁde dīrghatamasaścaraṇau lokamaṁgalau utthāpya nṛpatiṁ viprāstadā dīrghatamā muniḥ

He bowed to the feet of Dirghatamas, auspicious to the world. Raising up the king, O brahmins, the sage Dirghatamas then

Verse 11 (skanda.3.17.11)

आशिषं प्रयुयोजाथ स्वनयाय नृपाय सः। अत्रांतरे समायात उदंकोऽपि महानृषिः

āśiṣaṁ prayuyojātha svanayāya nṛpāya saḥ atrāṁtare samāyāta udaṁko'pi mahānṛṣiḥ

pronounced a blessing upon King Svanaya. Meanwhile, the great sage Udanka also arrived,

Verse 12 (skanda.3.17.12)

रामसेतौ धनुष्कोटौ स्नातुं शिष्यगणैर्वृतः। लक्षसंख्यो मुनिगणस्तेन साकं मुनीश्वरः

rāmasetau dhanuṣkoṭau snātuṁ śiṣyagaṇairvṛtaḥ lakṣasaṁkhyo munigaṇastena sākaṁ munīśvaraḥ

surrounded by his groups of disciples, to bathe at Dhanushkoti on Rama's Setu; a hundred thousand sages, that lord of sages,

Verse 13 (skanda.3.17.13)

उदंकोऽगस्त्यतीर्थेस्मिन्स्नातुं संप्राप्तवान्मुनिः। उदंकमागतं दृष्ट्वा कक्षीवान्प्रणनाम तम्

udaṁko'gastyatīrthesminsnātuṁ saṁprāptavānmuniḥ udaṁkamāgataṁ dṛṣṭvā kakṣīvānpraṇanāma tam

Udanka, arrived to bathe at this Agastya-tirtha. Seeing Udanka arrived, Kakshivan bowed to him.

Verse 14 (skanda.3.17.14)

अकरोदाशिषं विप्रः शिष्यायाथ गुरुस्तदा। अथ दीर्घतमा विप्रस्तमुदंकं महामुनिम्

akarodāśiṣaṁ vipraḥ śiṣyāyātha gurustadā atha dīrghatamā viprastamudaṁkaṁ mahāmunim

That teacher, the brahmin, then gave his blessing to his disciple. Then the brahmin Dirghatamas, to that great sage Udanka,

Verse 15 (skanda.3.17.15)

कुशलं परिपप्रच्छ सोऽपि तं मुनि पुंगमम्। उभौ तौ मुनिशार्दूलौ सर्वलोकेषु विश्रुतौ

kuśalaṁ paripapraccha so'pi taṁ muni puṁgamam ubhau tau muniśārdūlau sarvalokeṣu viśrutau

asked after his welfare, and he too asked that foremost of sages. Both those tigers among sages, renowned in all the worlds,

Verse 16 (skanda.3.17.16)

कथयामासतुस्तत्र कथाः पापप्रणाशिनीः। अथ राजाप्युदंकं तं प्रणनाम मुनीश्व रम्

kathayāmāsatustatra kathāḥ pāpapraṇāśinīḥ atha rājāpyudaṁkaṁ taṁ praṇanāma munīśva ram

told each other sin-destroying stories there. Then the king too bowed to that lord of sages, Udanka.

Verse 17 (skanda.3.17.17)

उदंकोप्याशिषं तस्मै प्रायुंक्त स्वनयाय वै। राजाथ स्वनयः प्रीतस्तत्र वाक्यमभाषत

udaṁkopyāśiṣaṁ tasmai prāyuṁkta svanayāya vai rājātha svanayaḥ prītastatra vākyamabhāṣata

Udanka too pronounced a blessing upon Svanaya. Then King Svanaya, pleased, spoke these words there,

Verse 18 (skanda.3.17.18)

मुनिं तं दीर्घतमसं विवाहः क्रिय तामिति। तथास्त्वित्यवदत्सोऽपि तदा दीर्घतमा मुनिः

muniṁ taṁ dīrghatamasaṁ vivāhaḥ kriya tāmiti tathāstvityavadatso'pi tadā dīrghatamā muniḥ

to the sage Dirghatamas: "Let the marriage be performed." "So be it," said the sage Dirghatamas in turn.

Verse 19 (skanda.3.17.19)

श्व एव क्रियतां राजन्सुमुहूर्ते महामते। अत्रैव पाणिग्रहणं क्रियतां गन्धमा दने

śva eva kriyatāṁ rājansumuhūrte mahāmate atraiva pāṇigrahaṇaṁ kriyatāṁ gandhamā dane

"Tomorrow itself, O king, at an auspicious hour, O wise one, let the marriage (taking of hand) be performed right here at Gandhamadana.

Verse 20 (skanda.3.17.20)

तस्मादिहानय क्षिप्रं कन्यामंतःपुरं तथा। इत्युक्तः स्वनयो राजा गत्वा स्वपटमण्डपम्

tasmādihānaya kṣipraṁ kanyāmaṁtaḥpuraṁ tathā ityuktaḥ svanayo rājā gatvā svapaṭamaṇḍapam

Therefore bring here quickly the girl, and the inner-apartment women as well." Thus addressed, King Svanaya, going to his own pavilion tent,

Verse 21 (skanda.3.17.21)

आहूय शतसंख्याकान्वृद्धान्वर्ष वरांस्तदा। आनेतुं प्रेषयामास कन्यामंतःपुरं तथा

āhūya śatasaṁkhyākānvṛddhānvarṣa varāṁstadā ānetuṁ preṣayāmāsa kanyāmaṁtaḥpuraṁ tathā

summoning a hundred aged chamberlains, sent them to bring the girl and the inner-apartment retinue as well.

Verse 22 (skanda.3.17.22)

ते वर्षवरमुख्यास्तु स्वनयेन प्रचोदिताः। मनोजवान्समारुह्य वाजिनो मधुरां ययुः

te varṣavaramukhyāstu svanayena pracoditāḥ manojavānsamāruhya vājino madhurāṁ yayuḥ

Those chief chamberlains, thus dispatched by Svanaya, mounting horses swift as the mind, went to Madhura.

Verse 23 (skanda.3.17.23)

गत्वा चांतःपुरं तूर्णं वृत्तं सर्वं निवेद्यच। कन्ययांतःपुरेणापि सहिताः पुनराययुः

gatvā cāṁtaḥpuraṁ tūrṇaṁ vṛttaṁ sarvaṁ nivedyaca kanyayāṁtaḥpureṇāpi sahitāḥ punarāyayuḥ

Having gone swiftly to the inner apartments and reported everything that had occurred, they returned again together with the girl and the inner-apartment retinue.

Verse 24 (skanda.3.17.24)

ततः परस्मिन्दिवसे शुभे दीर्घतमा ऋषिः। गोदानादीनि पुत्रस्य विधिवन्निरवर्तयत्

tataḥ parasmindivase śubhe dīrghatamā ṛṣiḥ godānādīni putrasya vidhivanniravartayat

Then, on the next auspicious day, the sage Dirghatamas duly performed the go-dana (gift-of-a-cow) and other preliminary rites for his son.

Verse 25 (skanda.3.17.25)

निर्वृत्तेष्वथ कक्षीवान्गोदानादिषु कर्मसु। उद्वोढुं राजतनयां पित्रा च गुरुणा सह।

nirvṛtteṣvatha kakṣīvāngodānādiṣu karmasu udvoḍhuṁ rājatanayāṁ pitrā ca guruṇā saha

When the go-dana and other rites were completed, Kakshivan, to marry the king's daughter, together with his father and his teacher,

Verse 26 (skanda.3.17.26)

चतुर्दंतं महाकायं गजं सर्वांगपांडुरम्। आरुह्य हर्षसंयुक्तो द्वितीय इव देवराट्

caturdaṁtaṁ mahākāyaṁ gajaṁ sarvāṁgapāṁḍuram āruhya harṣasaṁyukto dvitīya iva devarāṭ

mounted the four-tusked elephant of great body, white all over, joyful, like a second king of the gods,

Verse 27 (skanda.3.17.27)

मनोरमायाः कन्यायाः पूरयंश्च मनोरथम्। ब्राह्मणैर्बहुसाहस्रैः सहितः स्वस्तिवाचकैः

manoramāyāḥ kanyāyāḥ pūrayaṁśca manoratham brāhmaṇairbahusāhasraiḥ sahitaḥ svastivācakaiḥ

fulfilling the desire of the maiden Manorama, accompanied by many thousands of brahmins reciting blessings,

Verse 28 (skanda.3.17.28)

तोरणालंकृतद्वारं राजर्षे पटमण्डपम्। कृतमंगलकृत्योऽसौ कक्षीवान्मुदितो ययौ

toraṇālaṁkṛtadvāraṁ rājarṣe paṭamaṇḍapam kṛtamaṁgalakṛtyo'sau kakṣīvānmudito yayau

went, joyful, having performed the auspicious rites, to the royal sage's pavilion tent, its gate adorned with a festal arch.

Verse 29 (skanda.3.17.29)

ततः स्वनयकन्या सा कृतमंगलभूषणा। चतुर्दंतमहाकायश्वेतदंतावलस्थितम्

tataḥ svanayakanyā sā kṛtamaṁgalabhūṣaṇā caturdaṁtamahākāyaśvetadaṁtāvalasthitam

Then Svanaya's daughter, adorned with auspicious ornaments, seeing Kakshivan approaching, seated upon the great four-tusked, white-tusked elephant,

Verse 30 (skanda.3.17.30)

कक्षीवंतं समायांतं दृष्ट्वा स्वोद्वाहनोत्सुकम्। प्रतिज्ञा मत्कृते दानीं निर्वृत्तेति मुदं ययौ

kakṣīvaṁtaṁ samāyāṁtaṁ dṛṣṭvā svodvāhanotsukam pratijñā matkṛte dānīṁ nirvṛtteti mudaṁ yayau

eager for her own wedding, rejoiced, thinking: "The vow I made has now been fulfilled for my sake."

Verse 31 (skanda.3.17.31)

कक्षीवान्दीर्घतमसा तथोदंकेन संयुतः। पटाकारबहिर्द्वारं क्रमाद्राज्ञः समाययौ

kakṣīvāndīrghatamasā tathodaṁkena saṁyutaḥ paṭākārabahirdvāraṁ kramādrājñaḥ samāyayau

Kakshivan, together with Dirghatamas and Udanka, came in due order to the outer gate of the king's tented pavilion.

Verse 32 (skanda.3.17.32)

स्वनयस्तु ततो दृष्ट्वा कक्षीवंतं समागतम्। प्रत्युज्जगाम सहितः सुदर्शनपुरोधसा

svanayastu tato dṛṣṭvā kakṣīvaṁtaṁ samāgatam pratyujjagāma sahitaḥ sudarśanapurodhasā

Svanaya then, seeing Kakshivan arrived, went out to meet him, together with his chief priest Sudarshana.

Verse 33 (skanda.3.17.33)

कक्षीवतो वरस्याथ कन्यकापरिचारिकाः। राजतैः स्वर्णपात्रैश्च चक्रु र्नीराजनाविधिम्

kakṣīvato varasyātha kanyakāparicārikāḥ rājataiḥ svarṇapātraiśca cakru rnīrājanāvidhim

Then the maidservants of the bride performed the waving-of-lamps (niraajana) rite for the bridegroom Kakshivan, with silver and gold vessels.

Verse 34 (skanda.3.17.34)

स्वनयेन समाहूतो ब्राह्मणैः परिवारितः। प्रविवेशाथ लक्ष्मीवान्कक्षीवान्राजमंदिरम्

svanayena samāhūto brāhmaṇaiḥ parivāritaḥ praviveśātha lakṣmīvānkakṣīvānrājamaṁdiram

Invited by Svanaya, surrounded by brahmins, the resplendent Kakshivan then entered the royal palace.

Verse 35 (skanda.3.17.35)

ततो वरेण सहितं तं दीर्घतमसं मुनिम्। सोदंकमनयद्राजा स्वगृहं विनयान्वितः

tato vareṇa sahitaṁ taṁ dīrghatamasaṁ munim sodaṁkamanayadrājā svagṛhaṁ vinayānvitaḥ

Then the king, endowed with humility, led that sage Dirghatamas, together with the bridegroom and with Udanka, into his own house.

Verse 36 (skanda.3.17.36)

उदंकदीर्घतमसोरर्घ्यं च प्रददौ नृपः। अलंकृते प्रपामध्ये वस्त्रचामरतोरणैः

udaṁkadīrghatamasorarghyaṁ ca pradadau nṛpaḥ alaṁkṛte prapāmadhye vastracāmaratoraṇaiḥ

The king offered arghya to Udanka and Dirghatamas, in the middle of a pavilion adorned with cloths, chowries, and festal arches.

Verse 37 (skanda.3.17.37)

वरो दीर्घतमाश्चान्ये सोदंका मुनयस्तदा। न्यषीदन्स्वनयश्चापि सामात्यः सपुरोहितः

varo dīrghatamāścānye sodaṁkā munayastadā nyaṣīdansvanayaścāpi sāmātyaḥ sapurohitaḥ

The bridegroom, Dirghatamas, and other sages together with Udanka then took their seats; and Svanaya too, together with his ministers and chief priest,

Verse 38 (skanda.3.17.38)

ततो दुहितरं कन्यां सुकेशीं तां मनो रमाम्। भूषणालंकृतां गात्रे दिव्यवस्त्रधरां शुभाम्

tato duhitaraṁ kanyāṁ sukeśīṁ tāṁ mano ramām bhūṣaṇālaṁkṛtāṁ gātre divyavastradharāṁ śubhām

Then he led forth his daughter Manorama, of beautiful hair, her body adorned with ornaments, clad in divine garments, auspicious,

Verse 39 (skanda.3.17.39)

बिंबोष्ठीं चारुसर्वांगीं पीनोन्नतपयोधराम्। प्रपायामध्यमनयन्महाजनसमाकुलम्।

biṁboṣṭhīṁ cārusarvāṁgīṁ pīnonnatapayodharām prapāyāmadhyamanayanmahājanasamākulam

with lips like the bimba fruit, lovely in every limb, with full, raised breasts, into the midst of the pavilion, thronged with a great crowd of people.

Verse 40 (skanda.3.17.40)

ततो वरस्य कंठे सा मालां चंपकनिर्मिताम्। निवेशयामास शुभा जनमध्ये मनोरमा

tato varasya kaṁṭhe sā mālāṁ caṁpakanirmitām niveśayāmāsa śubhā janamadhye manoramā

Then that auspicious Manorama placed a garland made of champaka flowers around the neck of the bridegroom, in the midst of the people.

Verse 41 (skanda.3.17.41)

उदंकस्तत आगत्य प्रतिष्ठाप्यानलं स्थले। कृत्वाग्निमुखपर्यंतं लाजाहोमादिकं तथा

udaṁkastata āgatya pratiṣṭhāpyānalaṁ sthale kṛtvāgnimukhaparyaṁtaṁ lājāhomādikaṁ tathā

Udanka then came forward, established the sacred fire on that spot, and, having performed the rites beginning with the placing before the fire, the parched-grain oblation, and the like,

Verse 42 (skanda.3.17.42)

पाणिमग्राहयत्तस्याः कन्यायाश्च वरेण तु। उदंकः सर्वकर्माणि कारयामास तत्र वै।

pāṇimagrāhayattasyāḥ kanyāyāśca vareṇa tu udaṁkaḥ sarvakarmāṇi kārayāmāsa tatra vai

caused the hand of that maiden to be taken by the bridegroom. Udanka indeed had all the rites performed there.

Verse 43 (skanda.3.17.43)

वरवध्वोस्तदा विप्राः प्रायुंजत तदाशिषः। ततः स राजा स्वनयो वरं दीर्घतमोमुनिम्

varavadhvostadā viprāḥ prāyuṁjata tadāśiṣaḥ tataḥ sa rājā svanayo varaṁ dīrghatamomunim

The brahmins then pronounced their blessings upon the bride and groom. Then King Svanaya, together with the groom, the sage Dirghatamas,

Verse 44 (skanda.3.17.44)

उदंकं वरपक्षीयान्स्वपक्षीयांस्तथाद्विजाः। त्रिलक्षं ब्राह्मणानन्नैर्भोजयामास षड्रसैः

udaṁkaṁ varapakṣīyānsvapakṣīyāṁstathādvijāḥ trilakṣaṁ brāhmaṇānannairbhojayāmāsa ṣaḍrasaiḥ

Udanka, those of the groom's party, and those of his own party, O brahmins, fed three hundred thousand brahmins with food of the six flavours.

Verse 45 (skanda.3.17.45)

ततः संभावयामास तांबूलाद्यैरनेकधा। अथामंत्र्य मुनिश्रेष्ठमुदंकः स्वाश्रमं ययौ

tataḥ saṁbhāvayāmāsa tāṁbūlādyairanekadhā athāmaṁtrya muniśreṣṭhamudaṁkaḥ svāśramaṁ yayau

Then he honoured them in many ways with betel and the like. Then, having taken leave of that foremost of sages, Udanka went to his own ashrama,

Verse 46 (skanda.3.17.46)

अन्ये च ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे स्वदेशान्प्रययुस्तदा। एवं विवाहे निर्वृत्ते कक्षीवद्राजकन्ययोः

anye ca brāhmaṇāḥ sarve svadeśānprayayustadā evaṁ vivāhe nirvṛtte kakṣīvadrājakanyayoḥ

and all the other brahmins then went to their own lands. Thus, when the marriage of Kakshivan and the king's daughter had taken place,

Verse 47 (skanda.3.17.47)

प्रविश्यागस्त्यतीर्थं स तिरोधत्त गजोत्तमः। ततो दीर्घतमा विप्राः पुत्रेण स्नुषया सह

praviśyāgastyatīrthaṁ sa tirodhatta gajottamaḥ tato dīrghatamā viprāḥ putreṇa snuṣayā saha

that best of elephants entered Agastya-tirtha and vanished. Then Dirghatamas, O brahmins, together with his son and daughter-in-law,

Verse 48 (skanda.3.17.48)

अगस्त्यस्य महातीर्थे स्नानं कृत्वेष्टदायिनि। श्लाघमानश्च तत्तीर्थं सर्वलोकेषु विश्रुतम्

agastyasya mahātīrthe snānaṁ kṛtveṣṭadāyini ślāghamānaśca tattīrthaṁ sarvalokeṣu viśrutam

having bathed in that great tirtha of Agastya, granter of all wishes, and having praised that tirtha renowned in all the worlds,

Verse 49 (skanda.3.17.49)

प्रयातुं स्वा श्रमं पुण्यं वेदारण्यं मनो दधे। राजानं च तमागंतुमापृच्छन्मुनिसत्तमः

prayātuṁ svā śramaṁ puṇyaṁ vedāraṇyaṁ mano dadhe rājānaṁ ca tamāgaṁtumāpṛcchanmunisattamaḥ

resolved to go to his own holy ashrama, the Veda-forest; and that best of sages asked leave of the king to depart.

Verse 50 (skanda.3.17.50)

स्वनयोऽपि तदा राजा स्वदुहित्रे मुदान्वितः। ददौ शतसहस्राणि स्वर्णानि स्त्रीधनं तदा

svanayo'pi tadā rājā svaduhitre mudānvitaḥ dadau śatasahasrāṇi svarṇāni strīdhanaṁ tadā

King Svanaya too, then, filled with joy, gave to his daughter a hundred thousand gold pieces as her women's wealth (stridhana),

Verse 51 (skanda.3.17.51)

गवां सहस्रं प्रददौ दासीनां च सहस्रकम्। ग्रामं पंचशतं चापि ददौ दुहितृवत्सलः

gavāṁ sahasraṁ pradadau dāsīnāṁ ca sahasrakam grāmaṁ paṁcaśataṁ cāpi dadau duhitṛvatsalaḥ

gave a thousand cows and a thousand maidservants; and, loving toward his daughter, he gave five hundred villages as well,

Verse 52 (skanda.3.17.52)

दिव्यवस्त्रा युतं चापि शतं भूषणपेटिकाः। हारमालासहस्रं च ददौ दुहितृसौहृदात्

divyavastrā yutaṁ cāpi śataṁ bhūṣaṇapeṭikāḥ hāramālāsahasraṁ ca dadau duhitṛsauhṛdāt

and a hundred boxes of ornaments together with divine garments, and a thousand strings of pearls, out of affection for his daughter.

Verse 53 (skanda.3.17.53)

एतत्सर्वं समादाय स पुत्रः सस्नुषो मुनिः। राज्ञा च समनुज्ञातः प्रययौ वेदकाननम्

etatsarvaṁ samādāya sa putraḥ sasnuṣo muniḥ rājñā ca samanujñātaḥ prayayau vedakānanam

Having received all this, that sage, together with his son and daughter-in-law, and having taken leave of the king, set out for the Veda-forest.

Verse 54 (skanda.3.17.54)

वेदारण्यं समासाद्य तदा दीर्घतमा मुनिः। उवास ससुखं विप्राः पुत्रेण स्नुषया सह

vedāraṇyaṁ samāsādya tadā dīrghatamā muniḥ uvāsa sasukhaṁ viprāḥ putreṇa snuṣayā saha

Having reached the Veda-forest, the sage Dirghatamas then dwelt happily, O brahmins, together with his son and daughter-in-law,

Verse 55 (skanda.3.17.55)

सेवन्वेदाटवीनाथं भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदम्। न्यवसत्तु चिरं कालं कक्षीवानपि भार्यया

sevanvedāṭavīnāthaṁ bhuktimuktiphalapradam nyavasattu ciraṁ kālaṁ kakṣīvānapi bhāryayā

worshipping the lord of the Veda-forest, the bestower of the fruit of enjoyment and liberation. Kakshivan too dwelt there for a long time together with his wife.

Verse 56 (skanda.3.17.56)

स्वनयोपि स राजर्षिः स्नात्वा कुंभजनिर्मिते। तत्र तीर्थे महापुण्ये सहितः सर्वसैनिकैः

svanayopi sa rājarṣiḥ snātvā kuṁbhajanirmite tatra tīrthe mahāpuṇye sahitaḥ sarvasainikaiḥ

Svanaya too, that royal sage, having bathed together with all his soldiers in that greatly holy tirtha made by the pot-born sage,

Verse 57 (skanda.3.17.57)

अतःपुरं समादाय मुदितः स्वपुरं ययौ। अगस्त्यतीर्थमाहात्म्यादेवं कक्षीवतो मुनेः। अनन्यसुलभो विप्रा विवाहः समजायत

ataḥpuraṁ samādāya muditaḥ svapuraṁ yayau agastyatīrthamāhātmyādevaṁ kakṣīvato muneḥ ananyasulabho viprā vivāhaḥ samajāyata

took his inner-apartment retinue and, rejoicing, went to his own city. Thus, by the greatness of Agastya-tirtha, O brahmins, the marriage of the sage Kakshivan came about, one not easily obtained by any other.

Verse 58 (skanda.3.17.58)

श्रीसूत उवाच। इतिहासस्त्वयं पुण्यो वेदसिद्धो मुनीश्वराः

śrīsūta uvāca itihāsastvayaṁ puṇyo vedasiddho munīśvarāḥ

Suta said: This story, O lords of sages, is holy, established by the Veda,

Verse 59 (skanda.3.17.59)

धन्यो यशस्य आयुष्यः कीर्तिसौभाग्य वर्द्धनः। श्रोतव्यः पठितव्योऽयं सर्वथा मानवैर्द्विजाः

dhanyo yaśasya āyuṣyaḥ kīrtisaubhāgya varddhanaḥ śrotavyaḥ paṭhitavyo'yaṁ sarvathā mānavairdvijāḥ

blessed, glorious, conferring long life, increasing fame and good fortune; it ought in every way to be heard and read by men, O brahmins.

Verse 60 (skanda.3.17.60)

पठतां शृण्वतां चेममितिहासं पुरातनम्। नेहामुत्रापि वा क्लेशो दारिद्यं चापि नो भवेत्

paṭhatāṁ śṛṇvatāṁ cemamitihāsaṁ purātanam nehāmutrāpi vā kleśo dāridyaṁ cāpi no bhavet

For those who read or hear this ancient story, neither here nor in the world beyond shall there be affliction, nor shall there be poverty.
