Brahma Khanda · Chapter 23
The Glory of Chakra-tirtha and the Boon of Golden Hands from Surya
Verse 1 (skanda.3.23.1)
śrīsūta uvāca agnitīrthābhidhe tīrthe sarvapātakanāśane snānaṁ kṛtvā viśuddhātmā cakratīrthaṁ tato vrajet
Suta said: Having bathed at the tirtha named Agni, destroyer of all sins, purified in soul, one should then go to Chakra-tirtha.
Verse 2 (skanda.3.23.2)
yaṁyaṁ kāmaṁ samuddiśya cakratīrthe dvijottamāḥ snānaṁ samācarenmartyastaṁtaṁ kāmaṁ samaśnute
Whatever desire a mortal aims at, O best of brahmins, and performs the bath at Chakra-tirtha, that very desire he obtains.
Verse 3 (skanda.3.23.3)
purāhirbudhnyanāmā tu maharṣiḥ saṁśita vrataḥ sudarśanamupāstāsmiṁstapasvī gaṁdhamādane
Long ago a great sage named Ahirbudhnya, of strict vows, an ascetic, worshipped Sudarshana here at Gandhamadana.
Verse 4 (skanda.3.23.4)
tapasyaṁtaṁ muniṁ tatra rākṣasā ghorarūpiṇaḥ abādhaṁta sadā viprāstapovighnaikatatparāḥ
Rakshasas of terrible form, always intent solely on obstructing his austerity, harassed that sage practising austerity there, O brahmins.
Verse 5 (skanda.3.23.5)
sudarśanaṁ tadāgatya bhaktarakṣaṇavāṁchayā yātudhānānbādhamānānnyavadhīrlīlayā purā
Sudarshana, coming there out of desire to protect his devotee, of old, slew with ease those demons who were harassing him.
Verse 6 (skanda.3.23.6)
tadāprabhṛti taccakraṁ bhaktaprārthanayā dvijāḥ ahirbudhnyakṛte tīrthe sannidhānaṁ sadā'karot
From that time onward, O brahmins, that Chakra (discus), at the devotee's request, at the tirtha associated with Ahirbudhnya, ever established its presence.
Verse 7 (skanda.3.23.7)
tadāprabhṛti tattīrthaṁ cakratīrthamitīryate sudarśanaprasādena tatra tīrthe nimajjanāt
From that time onward, that tirtha is called Chakra-tirtha. By Sudarshana's grace, by immersion at that tirtha,
Verse 8 (skanda.3.23.8)
rakṣaḥpiśācā dikṛtā pīḍā nāstyeva karhicit snātvāsminpāvane tīrthe chinnapāṇiḥ purā raviḥ sa hiraṇyamayau pāṇī labdhavāṁstīrthavaibhavāt
affliction caused by rakshasas, pishachas, and the like never occurs at all. Bathing at this holy tirtha, of old, the sun, whose hands had been severed, obtained golden hands there, by the greatness of the tirtha.
Verse 9 (skanda.3.23.9)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ chinnapāṇiḥ kathamabhūdādityaḥ sūtanaṁdana yathā ca labdhavānpāṇī sauvarṇau tadvadasva naḥ
The sages said: How did the sun's hands come to be severed, O son of Suta? And how did he obtain golden hands - tell us that.
Verse 10 (skanda.3.23.10)
śrīsūta uvāca iṁdrādayaḥ surāḥ pūrvaṁ saṁtataṁ daityapīḍitāḥ
Suta said: Indra and the other gods, of old, continually oppressed by the daityas,
Verse 11 (skanda.3.23.11)
kiṁ kurma iti saṁcitya saṁbhūya samamaṁtrayan bṛhaspatiṁ puraskṛtya maṁtrayitvā ciraṁ surāḥ
thinking "What shall we do?", gathered together and took counsel together. Having placed Brihaspati at their head, and having deliberated for a long time, the gods,
Verse 12 (skanda.3.23.12)
turāsāhaṁ purodhāya dhāma svāyaṁbhuvaṁ yayuḥ te brahmāṇaṁ samāsādya dṛṣṭvā stutvā ca bhaktitaḥ
placing Indra before them, went to the abode of Svayambhu (Brahma). Having reached Brahma, having beheld him and praised him with devotion,
Verse 13 (skanda.3.23.13)
tato vyajijñapastasmai sveṣāmāgamakāraṇam surā ūcuḥ bhagavanbhāratīnātha daityā hyasmānbalotkaṭāḥ
they then informed him of the cause of their coming. The gods said: "O venerable lord of Bharati, the daityas, of excessive strength,
Verse 14 (skanda.3.23.14)
bādhaṁte satataṁ deva tatra brūhi pratikriyām ityuktaḥ sa surairbrahmā tānāha kṛpayā vacaḥ
harass us continually, O god; tell us the remedy for that." Thus addressed by the gods, Brahma spoke to them with compassion.
Verse 15 (skanda.3.23.15)
brahmovāca mā bhaiṣṭa yūyaṁ vibudhāstatropāyaṁ bravīmyaham māheśvaraṁ mahāyajñamasurāṇāṁ vināśanam
Brahma said: "Do not fear, O gods; I shall tell you the means. The great Maheshvara sacrifice, the destroyer of asuras -
Verse 16 (skanda.3.23.16)
prārabhadhvaṁ surā yūyaṁ munibhistattvadarśibhiḥ ayaṁ ca daivataiḥ sarvairvidhilobhaṁ vinā kṛtaḥ
begin it, O gods, together with the sages who perceive the truth. And this, performed by all the gods without any greed, in due form -
Verse 17 (skanda.3.23.17)
māheśvaro mahāyajñaḥ kriyatāṁ gaṁdhamādane yadi hyanyatra taṁ yajñaṁ kuryustadvibudharṣabhāḥ
let this great Maheshvara sacrifice be performed at Gandhamadana. For if you bulls among gods should perform that sacrifice elsewhere,
Verse 18 (skanda.3.23.18)
yajñavighnaṁ tadā kuryurdurātmānaḥ suradviṣaḥ kriyate yadyayaṁ yajño gaṁdhamādanaparvate
those evil-souled enemies of the gods would then obstruct the sacrifice. But if this sacrifice is performed at Mount Gandhamadana,
Verse 19 (skanda.3.23.19)
sudarśanaprasādena naiva vighno bhavettadā ahirbudhnyābhidhānasya maharṣergaṁdhamādane
then, by the grace of Sudarshana, there would be no obstruction at all. For, at Gandhamadana, out of favour to the great sage named Ahirbudhnya,
Verse 20 (skanda.3.23.20)
anugrahāya tattīrthe sannidhatte sudarśanam ataḥ kurudhvaṁ bho yūyaṁ taṁ yajñaṁ gaṁdhamādane
Sudarshana establishes his presence at that tirtha. Therefore, perform that sacrifice at Gandhamadana,
Verse 21 (skanda.3.23.21)
nātidūre cakratīrthādasurāṇāṁ vināśakam tataste brahmavacasā sahasā gaṁdhamādanam
the destroyer of the asuras, not far from Chakra-tirtha." Then they, at Brahma's word, at once went to Gandhamadana,
Verse 22 (skanda.3.23.22)
bṛhaspatiṁ puraskṛtya jagmuryajñacikīrṣayā te praṇamya mahātmānamahirbudhnyaṁ munīśvaram
placing Brihaspati at their head, desiring to perform the sacrifice. Having bowed to that great-souled lord of sages, Ahirbudhnya,
Verse 23 (skanda.3.23.23)
akalpayanyajñavāṭannātidūre tadāśramāt yajñakarmasu niṣṇātaiḥ sahitāste tapodhanaiḥ
they prepared the sacrificial enclosure not far from his ashrama. Together with those ascetics skilled in sacrificial rites,
Verse 24 (skanda.3.23.24)
iṣṭimārebhire devā asurāṇāṁ vināśinīm tasminkarmaṇi hotāsītsvayameva bṛhaspatiḥ
the gods began the Ishti destroying the asuras. In that rite, Brihaspati himself was the Hotri priest.
Verse 25 (skanda.3.23.25)
babhūva maitrāvaruṇo jayaṁtaḥ pākaśāsaniḥ acchāvāko babhūvātra vasūnāmaṣṭamo vasuḥ
Jayanta, son of Pakashasana (Indra), became the Maitravaruna priest. The eighth Vasu became the Achchhavaka priest there.
Verse 26 (skanda.3.23.26)
grāvastudabhavattatra śaktiputraḥ parāśaraḥ aṣṭāvakro mahātejā adhvaryudhuramūḍhavān
Parashara, son of Shakti, became the Gravastut there. The greatly splendid Ashtavakra bore the burden of the Adhvaryu.
Verse 27 (skanda.3.23.27)
tatra pratiprasthātābhūdviśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ babhūva varuṇa unnetā ca dhaneśvaraḥ
The great sage Vishvamitra became the Pratiprasthata there. Varuna and Dhaneshvara (Kubera) became the Unneta.
Verse 28 (skanda.3.23.28)
brahmā babhūva savitā yajñasyārdhadhuraṁ vahan babhūva brāhmaṇācchaṁsī vasiṣṭho brahmaṇottamaḥ
Savita (Surya), bearing half the burden of the sacrifice, became the Sadasya. The excellent brahmin Vasishtha became the Brahmanacchamsi.
Verse 29 (skanda.3.23.29)
āgnīdhro'bhūcchunaḥśepaḥ potā jātaśca pāvakaḥ udgātā vāyurabhavatprastotā ca paretarāṭ
Shunahshepa became the Agnidhra; Pavaka himself became the Pota. Vayu became the Udgata, and Paretaraj (Yama) the Prastota.
Verse 30 (skanda.3.23.30)
pratihartā tu tatrāsīdagastyaḥ kuṁbhasaṁbhavaḥ subrahmaṇyo madhucchaṁdā viśvāmitrātmajo mahān
Agastya, the pot-born, was the Pratiharta there. The great Subrahmanya, Madhuchchhanda, son of Vishvamitra,
Verse 31 (skanda.3.23.31)
yajamānaḥ svayamabhūddevarājaḥ puraṁdaraḥ upadraṣṭā babhūvātra vyāsaputraḥ śuko muniḥ
and the king of the gods, Purandara, himself became the Yajamana. Shuka, the sage, son of Vyasa, became the Upadrashta there.
Verse 32 (skanda.3.23.32)
tataste ṛtvijaḥ sarve devarājaṁ puraṁdaram vidhivaddīkṣayāṁcakrustatra māheśvare kratau
Then all those officiating priests duly consecrated Purandara, king of the gods, at that Maheshvara sacrifice.
Verse 33 (skanda.3.23.33)
prāvartata mahāyajña evaṁ vai gaṁdhamādane sudarśanaprabhāvena duḥsahenātipīḍitāḥ
Thus the great sacrifice proceeded at Gandhamadana. By the power of Sudarshana, exceedingly unbearable, greatly harassed,
Verse 34 (skanda.3.23.34)
nāviṁdannasurāstatra raṁdhraṁ yajñe pravartite evanniraṁtarāyo'sau prāvartata mahā kratuḥ
the asuras could find no opening there once the sacrifice had begun. Thus, unobstructed, the great sacrifice proceeded.
Verse 35 (skanda.3.23.35)
bhakṣayaṁśca haristatra jajvāla hutavāhanaḥ vidhivatkarmajālāni kṛtvādhvaryurasaṁbhramāt
Consuming the oblations, the oblation-bearer Agni blazed there. Having performed all the ritual acts duly and without confusion, the Adhvaryu,
Verse 36 (skanda.3.23.36)
maṁtrapūtaṁ puroḍāśaṁ juhavāmāsa pāvake hutaśeṣaṁ puroḍāśaṁ vibhajyādhvaryurādarāt
offered into Pavaka the mantra-purified Purodasha (sacrificial cake). Having distributed the remainder of the offered Purodasha, the Adhvaryu, with reverence,
Verse 37 (skanda.3.23.37)
ṛtvigbhyo hotṛmukhyebhyaḥ pradadau pāpanāśanam savitre brahmaṇe caikamatyugrataratejasam
gave that sin-destroying portion to the priests headed by the Hotri; and to Savitri (Surya), the brahmin, a portion of exceedingly fierce splendour,
Verse 38 (skanda.3.23.38)
dadau tatra puroḍāśabhāgaṁ prāśitranāmakam pratijagrāha pāṇibhyāṁ prāśitraṁ savitā tadā
he gave there, the portion of the Purodasha called the Prashitra. Savitri (Surya) then received that Prashitra with both his hands.
Verse 39 (skanda.3.23.39)
savitrā spṛṣṭamātraṁ sattatprāśitraṁ durāsadam tasya pāṇī praciccheda paśyatāṁ sarvaṛtvijām
That Prashitra, difficult to approach, the very moment it was touched by Savitri, severed his hands, before the eyes of all the priests.
Verse 40 (skanda.3.23.40)
tataḥ saṁchinnapāṇiḥ sa prāśitreṇogratejasā kimetaditi saṁtrasto viṣaṇṇavadano'bhavat
Then he, his hands severed by the fierce-splendoured Prashitra, terrified, saying "What is this?", became downcast of face.
Verse 41 (skanda.3.23.41)
savitā ṛtvijaḥ sarvānsamāhūyedamabravīt savitovāca puroḍāśasya bhāgo'yaṁ mama prāśitranāmakaḥ
Savita then summoned all the priests and said this: Savita said: "This portion of the Purodasha, called mine, the Prashitra,
Verse 42 (skanda.3.23.42)
dattaściccheda matpāṇī miṣatsveva bhavatsvapi ato bhavaṁtaḥ saṁbhūya sarva eva hi ṛtvijaḥ
given to me, has, even while all of you were watching, severed my hands. Therefore all of you priests together,
Verse 43 (skanda.3.23.43)
kalpayaṁtāmimau pāṇī nocedyajñaṁ nihanmyamum saviturvākyamākarṇya te sarve samaciṁtayan
arrange for these two hands, otherwise I shall destroy this sacrifice." Having heard Savita's words, all of them pondered.
Verse 44 (skanda.3.23.44)
tatra madhye munīṁdrāṇāṁ devānāṁ caiva sarvaśaḥ aṣṭāvakro mahātejā ṛtvijastānabhāṣata
There, in the midst of the lords of sages and of the gods, the greatly splendid Ashtavakra spoke to those priests.
Verse 45 (skanda.3.23.45)
aṣṭāvakra uvāca śṛṇudhvamṛtvijaḥ sarve mama vākyaṁ samāhitāḥ mayi jīvati vipreṁdrā viriṁcānāṁ śataṁ gatam
Ashtavakra said: "Listen, all you priests, to my word, with composed minds. While I have lived, O foremost of brahmins, a hundred Brahmas have passed away.
Verse 46 (skanda.3.23.46)
jāyaṁte ca mriyaṁte ca caturānanakoṭayaḥ paśyanneva ca tānsarvānahaṁ prāṇānadhārayam
Crores of four-faced ones are born and die; and, seeing all of them, I have retained my life-breaths.
Verse 47 (skanda.3.23.47)
tatra lokeśvarābhikhye vartamāne prajāpatau vipro hariharonāma nivasañchayāmalāpure
At that time, in the age of a Prajapati named Lokeshvara, a brahmin named Harihara dwelt in Shyamala-pura,
Verse 48 (skanda.3.23.48)
vyādhenāraṇyavāsena kelyarthaṁ lakṣyavedhinā chinnapādo'bhavadbāṇairlakṣya madhyaṁ samāgataḥ
and, by a hunter dwelling in the forest, aiming at a target for sport, his foot was severed by arrows, having come into the midst of the target.
Verse 49 (skanda.3.23.49)
sa gaṁdhamādanaṁ prāpya munibhiḥ preritastadā snātvā ca munitīrthe'sminprāptavāṁścaraṇau purā
He, having reached Gandhamadana, urged then by sages, having bathed at this Muni-tirtha, obtained his foot again there, of old.
Verse 50 (skanda.3.23.50)
tadā puṇyamidaṁ tīrthaṁ munitīrthamitīritam idānīṁ cakratīrthākhyaṁ cakranāma tvaviṁdata
Then this holy tirtha was called Muni-tirtha; now it has obtained the name Chakra-tirtha.
Verse 51 (skanda.3.23.51)
tadatra kriyatāṁ snānaṁ prāśitracchinnapāṇinā munitīrthe savitrāpi yuṣmākaṁ yadi rocate
Therefore, let the bath be performed here at Muni-tirtha by Savita, of the hands severed by the Prashitra, if it pleases you all.
Verse 52 (skanda.3.23.52)
ṛtvijaḥ kathitāstvevamaṣṭāvakramaharṣiṇā savitāramabhāṣaṁta sarva eva praharṣitāḥ
Thus spoken to by the great sage Ashtavakra, all the priests, greatly rejoicing, spoke to Savita:
Verse 53 (skanda.3.23.53)
savitaḥ snāhi tīrthe' smiṁstava pāṇī bhaviṣyataḥ aṣṭāvakro yathā prāha tathā kuru samāhitaḥ
"O Savita, bathe at this tirtha; your hands shall come to be. As Ashtavakra has said, so do, with a composed mind."
Verse 54 (skanda.3.23.54)
tataḥ sa savitā gatvā cakratīrthaṁ mahattaram sasnau pāṇyoravāptyarthamiṣṭadāyini tatra saḥ
Then that Savita, having gone to that great Chakra-tirtha, that granter of wishes, bathed there for the sake of obtaining his hands.
Verse 55 (skanda.3.23.55)
uttiṣṭhanneva sa tadā tatra snātvā sabhaktikam yukto hiraṇmayābhyāṁ tu pāṇibhyāṁ samadṛśyata
Just as he was rising up, having bathed there with devotion, he was seen then endowed with two golden hands.
Verse 56 (skanda.3.23.56)
hiraṇyapāṇiṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā jahṛṣuḥ sarvaṛtvijaḥ tataḥ samāpya taṁ yajñaṁ daityasaṁghānvijitya ca
Seeing him with golden hands, all the priests rejoiced. Then, having completed that sacrifice, and having conquered the hosts of daityas,
Verse 57 (skanda.3.23.57)
iṁdrādayaḥ surāḥ sarve sukhitāḥ svargamāyayuḥ tasmādetatsamāgatya tīrthaṁ sarvaiśca mānavaiḥ
Indra and all the other gods, happy, went to heaven. Therefore, this tirtha, having come to it, by all men,
Verse 58 (skanda.3.23.58)
sevanīyaṁ prayatnena svasvābhīṣṭasya siddhaye aṁdhaiśca kuṇibhirmūkairbadhiraiḥ kubjakairapi
should be resorted to with effort, for the accomplishment of one's own desires. By the blind, by the maimed, by the mute, by the deaf, by the hunchbacked as well,
Verse 59 (skanda.3.23.59)

by the lame, by the crippled, and by others deficient in limbs, by those with severed hands and feet, by those whose collection of limbs is impaired,
