Brahma Khanda · Chapter 29
The Glory of Sarva-Tirtha, Where All Tirthas Meet
Verse 1 (skanda.3.29.1)
śrīsūta uvāca snātvā sādhyāmṛte tīrthe nṛpaśāpavimokṣaṇe sarvatīrthaṁ tato gacchenmanujo niyamānvitaḥ
Sri Suta said: Having bathed at the tirtha Sadhyamrita, which frees one from a king's curse, a disciplined man should then proceed to Sarva-tirtha.
Verse 2 (skanda.3.29.2)
sarvatīrthaṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ mahāpātakanāśanam mahāpātakayukto vā yukto vā sarvapātakaiḥ
Sarva-tirtha is of great merit, the destroyer of the greatest sins; whether a man is burdened with a great sin or with every kind of sin,
Verse 3 (skanda.3.29.3)
śuddhyeta tatkṣaṇādeva sarvatīrthanimajjanāt tāvatsarvāṇi pāpāni dehe tiṣṭhaṁti suvratāḥ
he is purified that very instant by immersion in Sarva-tirtha. O men of good vows, until the sinful man bathes in this Sarva-tirtha,
Verse 4 (skanda.3.29.4)
na yāvatsarvatīrthesminnimajjetpāpapūruṣaḥ snānārthaṁ sarvatīrthe'smindṛṣṭvā yāṁtaṁ dvijā naram
all his sins remain lodged in his body. O brahmins, seeing a man going toward this Sarva-tirtha to bathe,
Verse 5 (skanda.3.29.5)
vepaṁte sarvapāpāni nāśo'smākaṁ bhavediti garbhavāsādiduḥkhāni tāvadyāti naro bhuvi
all his sins tremble, thinking "our destruction is now certain." A man endures the sufferings of dwelling in the womb and the like in this world,
Verse 6 (skanda.3.29.6)
na snāyātsarvatīrthe'sminyāvadbrāhmaṇapuṁgavāḥ anuṣṭhitairmahāyāgaistathā tīrthaniṣevaṇaiḥ
O foremost of brahmins, only until he has not yet bathed in this Sarva-tirtha. Whatever fruit a mortal gains through great sacrifices duly performed, or through resorting to other tirthas,
Verse 7 (skanda.3.29.7)
gāyatryādimahāmaṁtrajapairniyamapūrvakam caturṇāmapi vedānāmāvṛttyā śatasaṁkhyayā
or through the disciplined recitation of the Gayatri and other great mantras, or through the hundredfold repetition of all four Vedas,
Verse 8 (skanda.3.29.8)
śivaviṣṇvādidevānāṁ pūjayā bhaktipūrvakam ekādaśyāditithiṣu tathaivānaśanena ca yatphalaṁ labhate martyastallabhedatra majjanāt
or through devoted worship of Shiva, Vishnu and the other gods, and through fasting on the eleventh lunar day and similar occasions - whatever fruit a mortal thereby obtains, that same fruit he gains here by mere immersion.
Verse 9 (skanda.3.29.9)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ sarvatīrthamiti khyātiḥ sūtāsya kathamāgatā brūhyasmākamidaṁ puṇyaṁ vistarācchṛṇvatāṁ mune
The sages said: O Suta, how did this tirtha come to be renowned by the name 'Sarva-tirtha'? Tell us this meritorious tale in detail, O sage, as we listen.
Verse 10 (skanda.3.29.10)
śrīsūta uvāca purā sucaritonāma munirniyamasaṁyutaḥ
Sri Suta said: Long ago there was a sage named Sucharita, disciplined in his vows,
Verse 11 (skanda.3.29.11)
bhṛguvaṁśasamudbhūto jātyaṁdho jarayāturaḥ aśaktastīrthayātrāyāṁ netrābhāvena sa dvijāḥ
born in the lineage of Bhrigu, blind from birth and afflicted with old age; O brahmins, being unable, for want of sight, to undertake tirtha-pilgrimage,
Verse 12 (skanda.3.29.12)
sarveṣāmeva tīrthānāṁ snātukāmo mahāmuniḥ dakṣiṇāṁbunidhau puṇyaṁ gaṁdhamādanaparvatam
that great sage, desiring nonetheless to bathe in all the tirthas, went to the holy Mount Gandhamadana on the southern ocean-shore,
Verse 13 (skanda.3.29.13)
gatvā śaṁkaramuddiśya tapastepe suduṣkaram trikālamarcayañchaṁbhumupavāsī jiteṁdriyaḥ
and there, fixing his mind on Shankara, practiced an extremely difficult austerity - fasting, his senses subdued, he worshipped Shambhu three times daily,
Verse 14 (skanda.3.29.14)
tathā triṣavaṇasnānāttathaivātithipūjakaḥ śiśire jalamadhyastho grīṣme paṁcāgnimadhyagaḥ
and by bathing thrice daily, and by honoring guests; standing immersed in water in the cold season, surrounded by the five fires in summer,
Verse 15 (skanda.3.29.15)
varṣāsvāsārasahano'bbhakṣo vāyubhojanaḥ uddhūlanaṁ tripuṁḍraṁ ca bhasmanā dhārayansadā
enduring the downpours of the rainy season, subsisting on water alone, feeding on air, ever bearing the tripundra mark, smearing his body with ash,
Verse 16 (skanda.3.29.16)
jābālopaniṣadrītyā tathā rudrākṣadhārakaḥ evamugraṁ tapaścakre daśasaṁvatsaraṁ dvijaḥ
wearing rudraksha beads in the manner prescribed by the Jabala Upanishad - thus that brahmin practiced fierce austerity for ten years.
Verse 17 (skanda.3.29.17)
tapasā tasya saṁtuṣṭaḥ śaṁkaraścaṁdraśekharaḥ prādurāsīnmunestasya dvijāḥ sucaritasya vai
Pleased by his austerity, Shankara, the moon-crested one, O brahmins, then appeared before that sage Sucharita,
Verse 18 (skanda.3.29.18)
samāruhya mahokṣāṇaṁ bhūtavṛṁdaniṣevitaḥ girijārdhavapuḥ śūlī sūryakoṭisamaprabhaḥ
mounted upon his great bull, attended by hosts of ghostly beings, half his body that of Girija, trident-bearing, radiant as ten million suns,
Verse 19 (skanda.3.29.19)
svabhāsā bhāsayansarvā diśo vitimirāstadā bhasmapāṁḍurasarvāṁgo jaṭāmaṁḍalamaṁḍitaḥ
illuminating all directions with his own radiance, dispelling all darkness, his whole body pale with ash, adorned with a crown of matted hair,
Verse 20 (skanda.3.29.20)
anaṁtādimahānāgavibhūṣaṇavibhūṣitaḥ prādurbhūtastataḥ śaṁbhuḥ prādāttasya vilocane
bedecked with ornaments of Ananta and the other great serpents - thus Shambhu appeared, and he gave that sage a pair of eyes,
Verse 21 (skanda.3.29.21)
ātmāvalokanārthāya śaṁkaro girijāpatiḥ tataḥ sucarito viprāḥ śaṁbhunā dattadṛgdvayaḥ ālokya parameśānaṁ pratuṣṭāva prasannadhīḥ
so that he might behold him with his own sight - so did Shankara, lord of Girija. Then, O brahmins, Sucharita, his eyes thus given by Shambhu, beheld the Supreme Lord and, his mind filled with joy, praised him.
Verse 22 (skanda.3.29.22)
sucarita uvāca jaya deva maheśāna jaya śaṁkara dhūrjaṭe
Sucharita said: "Glory to you, O god, great lord! Glory to you, Shankara, bearer of matted locks!
Verse 23 (skanda.3.29.23)
jaya brahmādipūjya tvaṁ tripuraghna yamāṁtaka jayomeśa mahādeva kāmāṁtaka jayāmala
Glory to you, worshipped by Brahma and the other gods, destroyer of Tripura, ender of Yama! Glory, O Umesha, Mahadeva, ender of Kama, glory, O stainless one!
Verse 24 (skanda.3.29.24)
jaya saṁsāravaidya tvaṁ bhūtapāla śivāvyaya triyaṁbaka namastubhyaṁ bhaktarakṣaṇadīkṣita
Glory to you, physician of worldly existence, protector of all beings, undying Shiva! Salutations to you, three-eyed one, initiated into the protection of your devotees.
Verse 25 (skanda.3.29.25)
vyomakeśa namastubhyaṁ jaya kāruṇyavigraha nīlakaṇṭha namastubhyaṁ jaya saṁsāramocaka
Salutations to you, sky-haired one, glory, O embodiment of compassion! Salutations to you, blue-throated one, glory, O liberator from worldly bondage!
Verse 26 (skanda.3.29.26)
maheśvara namastubhyaṁ paramānaṁdavigraha gaṁgādhara namastubhyaṁ viśveśvara mṛḍāvyaya
Salutations to you, Maheshvara, embodiment of supreme bliss! Salutations to you, bearer of the Ganga, lord of the universe, eternal and gracious one.
Verse 27 (skanda.3.29.27)
namastubhyaṁ bhagavate vāsudevāya śaṁbhave śarvāyogrāya garbhāya kailāsapataye namaḥ
Salutations to you, the blessed Vasudeva, the auspicious Shambhu! Salutations to Sharva, the fierce one, the origin of all, lord of Kailasa.
Verse 28 (skanda.3.29.28)
rakṣa māṁ karuṇāsiṁdho kṛpādṛṣṭyavalokanāt mama vṛttamanālocya trāhi māṁ kṛpayā hara
Protect me, O ocean of compassion, through the glance of your compassionate gaze; without regard for my conduct, save me out of grace, O Hara."
Verse 29 (skanda.3.29.29)
śrīsūta uvāca iti stuto mahādevastamenamidamabhyadhāt muniṁ sucaritaṁ viprāḥ dayodanvānumāpatiḥ
Sri Suta said: Thus praised, Mahadeva - the ocean of compassion, the lord of Uma - spoke this, O brahmins, to that sage Sucharita.
Verse 30 (skanda.3.29.30)
mahādeva uvāca mune sucaritādya tvaṁ varaṁ varaya kāṁkṣitam varaṁ dātuṁ tavāyātaḥ puṇyesminnāśrame śubhe itīrito muniḥ prāha mahādevaṁ dayānidhim
Mahadeva said: "O Sucharita, choose now the boon you desire; I have come to this holy, auspicious hermitage to grant you a boon." Thus addressed, the sage spoke to Mahadeva, the treasury of compassion -
Verse 31 (skanda.3.29.31)
sucarita uvāca bhagavaṁstvaṁ prasanno me yadi syāścaṁdraśekhara
Sucharita said: "O Lord, moon-crested one, if you are indeed pleased with me,
Verse 32 (skanda.3.29.32)
tarhi tvāṁ pravṛṇomyaddhā varaṁ madabhikāṁkṣitam jarāpalitadehohaṁ kutracidgaṁtumakṣamaḥ
then I truly choose from you the boon I desire. My body is worn with age and grey hair; I am unable to travel anywhere,
Verse 33 (skanda.3.29.33)
sarvatīrtheṣu ca snātumākāṁkṣā mama vidyate tasmātsarveṣu tīrtheṣu snānena manujo hi yat phalaṁ prāpnoti me brūhi tatphalāvāptisādhanam
yet I have a longing to bathe in every tirtha. Therefore, whatever fruit a man obtains by bathing at all the tirthas - tell me the means by which I may obtain that very fruit."
Verse 34 (skanda.3.29.34)
mahādeva uvāca ahamāvāhayiṣyāmi tīrthānyatraiva kṛtsnaśaḥ
Mahadeva said: "I shall invoke all the tirthas together, right here in this place,
Verse 35 (skanda.3.29.35)
rāmasya setunā pūte nage'smingaṁdhamādane ityuktvā sa mahādevaḥ parvate gandhamādane
on this Mount Gandhamadana, made holy by Rama's Setu." Having said this, that supreme Mahadeva, on Mount Gandhamadana,
Verse 36 (skanda.3.29.36)
tīrthānyāvāhayāmāsa muniprītyarthamuttamaḥ tatassucaritaṁ prāha śaṁkaraḥ karuṇānidhiḥ
invoked all the tirthas there, out of love for the sage. Then Shankara, the treasury of compassion, said to Sucharita -
Verse 37 (skanda.3.29.37)
mune sucaritedaṁ tu mahāpātakanāśanam sāṁnidhyātsarvatīrthānāṁ sarvatīrthābhidhaṁ smṛtam
"O Sucharita, this tirtha, destroyer of great sins, is known by the name Sarva-tirtha ('All-tirtha') owing to the presence here of all the tirthas.
Verse 38 (skanda.3.29.38)
mayātra sarvatīrthānāṁ manasākarṣaṇādidam mānasaṁ tīrthamityākhyāṁ lapsyate bhuktimuktidam
And since I have drawn all these tirthas here by my own mind alone, it shall also bear the name Manasa-tirtha ('mind-tirtha'), granting both enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 39 (skanda.3.29.39)
ataḥ sucaritātra tvaṁ snāhi sadyo vimuktaye mahāpātakasaṁghānāṁ dāvānalasamadyutau
Therefore, O Sucharita, bathe here at once, for immediate liberation - this tirtha blazes like a forest-fire upon the mass of great sins,
Verse 40 (skanda.3.29.40)
kāmamohabhayakrodhalobharogādināśane vinā vedāṁtavijñānaṁ sadyonirvāṇakāraṇe
it destroys desire, delusion, fear, anger, greed, disease and the like, and is the cause of immediate liberation even without knowledge of Vedanta,
Verse 41 (skanda.3.29.41)
janmamṛtyvādinakraughasaṁsārārṇavatāraṇe kumbhīpākādisakalanarakāgnivināśane
it ferries one across the ocean of worldly existence, teeming with the crocodiles of birth, death and the like, and it quenches the fires of all the hells, beginning with Kumbhipaka.
Verse 42 (skanda.3.29.42)
itīritaḥ sucaritaḥ śambhunā madanāriṇā sasnau viprāḥ sarvatīrthe mahādevasya saṁnidhau
Thus addressed by Shambhu, the enemy of Kama, Sucharita, O brahmins, bathed in Sarva-tirtha in the very presence of Mahadeva.
Verse 43 (skanda.3.29.43)
snātvotthitaḥ sucarito dadṛśe'khilamānavaiḥ jarāpalitanirmuktastaruṇo'tīva sundaraḥ
Having bathed and risen, Sucharita was beheld by all the people there, freed from old age and grey hair, youthful, and exceedingly handsome.
Verse 44 (skanda.3.29.44)
dṛṣṭvā svadehasauṁdaryaṁ tataḥ sucarito muniḥ ślāghayāmāsa tattīrthaṁ bahudhā'nye ca tāpasāḥ
Seeing the beauty of his own body, the sage Sucharita, and many other ascetics too, praised that tirtha in manifold ways.
Verse 45 (skanda.3.29.45)
mahādevaḥ sucaritaṁ babhāṣe tadanaṁtaram asya tīrthasya tīre tvaṁ vasansucarita dvija
Mahadeva then spoke to Sucharita: "O brahmin Sucharita, dwelling on the bank of this tirtha,
Verse 46 (skanda.3.29.46)
snānaṁ kuruṣva satataṁ smaranmāṁ muktidāyakam deśāṁtarīyatīrtheṣu mā vraja brāhmaṇottama
bathe here constantly, remembering me, the giver of liberation; O best of brahmins, do not go to tirthas in other lands.
Verse 47 (skanda.3.29.47)
asya tīrthasya māhātmyānmāmaṁte prāpsyasi dhruvam anye'pi ye'tra snāsyaṁti te'pi māṁ prāpnuyurdvija
Through the greatness of this tirtha you shall at the end surely attain me; others too, O brahmin, whoever bathes here, shall attain me as well."
Verse 48 (skanda.3.29.48)
ityuktvā bhagavānīśastatraivāṁtaradhīyata tasminnaṁtarhite rudre tataḥ sucarito muniḥ
Having said this, the blessed Lord vanished right there. When Rudra had thus disappeared, the sage Sucharita,
Verse 49 (skanda.3.29.49)
anekakālaṁ nivasansarvatīrthasya tīrataḥ snānaṁ samācaraṁstīrthe mānase niyamānvitaḥ
dwelling for a long time on the bank of Sarva-tirtha, bathed regularly and with due discipline in that Manasa-tirtha.
Verse 50 (skanda.3.29.50)
dehāṁte śaṁkaraṁ prāpa sarvabandhavimocitaḥ sāyujyaṁ cāpi saṁprāpa sarvatīrthasya vaibhavāt
At the end of his bodily life, freed from every bondage, he attained Shankara; through the glory of Sarva-tirtha he attained also union (sayujya) with him.
Verse 51 (skanda.3.29.51)
evaṁ vaḥ kathitaṁ viprāḥ sarvatīrthasya vaibhavam etatpaṭhanvā śṛṇvanvā mucyate sarvapātakaiḥ
Thus, O brahmins, have I told you this glory of Sarva-tirtha; whoever reads it, or hears it, is freed from all sins.
