Brahma Khanda · Chapter 42

The Glory of the Tirthas Beginning with Rinamochana

Chapter 41All chaptersChapter 43

Verse 1 (skanda.3.42.1)

śrīsūta uvāca athātaḥ sarvatīrthānāṁ vaibhavaṁ pravadāmy aham setumadhyaniviṣṭānām anuktānāṁ munīśvarāḥ

Shri Suta said: O lords of sages, now I shall proclaim the glory of all those tirthas situated within the Setu that have not yet been told.

Verse 2 (skanda.3.42.2)

asti tīrthaṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ nāmnā tu ṛṇamocanam ṛṇāni trīṇi naśyanti narāṇām atra majjanāt

There exists here a most sacred tirtha named Rinamochana. By bathing here, men's three debts are destroyed.

Verse 3 (skanda.3.42.3)

dvijasya jāyamānasya ṛṇāni trīṇi santi hi ṛṣīṇāṁ devatānāṁ ca pitṝṇāṁ ca dvijottamāḥ

O best of brahmins, a brahmin, at his very birth, incurs three debts — to the sages, to the gods, and to the ancestors.

Verse 4 (skanda.3.42.4)

brahmacaryānanuṣṭhānād ṛṣīṇām ṛṇavān bhavet yajñādīnām akaraṇād devānāṁ ca ṛṇī bhavet

By not observing brahmacharya, one becomes indebted to the sages; by not performing sacrifices and the like, one becomes indebted to the gods.

Verse 5 (skanda.3.42.5)

putrān utpādanāc caiva pitṛṇām ṛṇavān bhavet vinā'pi brahmacaryeṇa vinā yāgaṁ vinā sutam

By not begetting a son, one becomes indebted to the ancestors. Yet even without brahmacharya, without sacrifice, without a son—

Verse 6 (skanda.3.42.6)

ṛṇamokṣābhidhe tīrthe snānamātreṇa mānavāḥ ṛṣidevapitṝṇāṁ tu ṛṇebhyo muktim āpnuyuḥ

—men, merely by bathing in this tirtha named Rinamoksha, attain release from their debts to the sages, gods, and ancestors.

Verse 7 (skanda.3.42.7)

brahmacaryeṇa yajñena tathā putrodbhavena ca naiva tuṣyanti ṛṣayo devāḥ pitṛgaṇās tathā

The sages, gods, and ancestors do not attain as much satisfaction through brahmacharya, sacrifice, and the begetting of a son

Verse 8 (skanda.3.42.8)

ṛṇamokṣe yathā snānād atulāṁ tuṣṭim āpnuyuḥ kiṁ cātra majjanāt tīrthe daridrā adhamarṇinaḥ

—as they do from bathing at Rinamoksha. What is more, by bathing in this tirtha, the poor and those burdened with debt—

Verse 9 (skanda.3.42.9)

muktā ṛṇebhyaḥ sarvebhyo dhaninaḥ syur na saṁśayaḥ yad atra majjanāt puṁsām ṛṇamuktiḥ prajāyate

—become, freed from all debts, wealthy men, without doubt. For here, by bathing, men's release from debt comes about.

Verse 10 (skanda.3.42.10)

tasmād uktam idaṁ tīrtham ṛṇamocanasaṁjñayā ato'tra ṛṇibhiḥ sarvaiḥ snātavyaṁ tadvimuktaye

For this reason, this tirtha is named Rinamochana. Therefore, all who are in debt should bathe here for release from it.

Verse 11 (skanda.3.42.11)

etattīrthasamaṁ tīrthaṁ na bhūtaṁ na bhaviṣyati pāṇḍavaiḥ kṛtam apy atra tīrtham asty aparaṁ mahat

No tirtha has ever equaled, nor shall ever equal, this tirtha. Here there is also another great tirtha, made by the Pandavas.

Verse 12 (skanda.3.42.12)

yatreṣṭaṁ dharmaputrādyaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ pañcabhiḥ purā tad etat tīrtham uddiśya bhuktimuktiphalapradam

That very tirtha where, long ago, the five Pandavas, led by Yudhishthira, performed sacrifice — it grants the fruits of both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 13 (skanda.3.42.13)

daśakoṭisahasrāṇi tīrthāny anuttamāni hi pañcapāṇḍavatīrthe'smin sānnidhyaṁ kurvate sadā

Ten thousand crores of most excellent tirthas ever abide in the presence of this Five-Pandava tirtha.

Verse 14 (skanda.3.42.14)

ādityā vasavo rudrāḥ sādhyāś ca samarudgaṇāḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātīrthe nityaṁ sannihitās tathā

The Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the Sadhyas, together with the Maruts — all abide ever present in this great tirtha of the Pandavas.

Verse 15 (skanda.3.42.15)

atrābhiṣekaṁ yaḥ kuryāt pitṛdevāṁś ca tarpayet sarvapāpavinirmukto brahmaloke sa pūjyate

Whoever performs ritual bathing here and offers libations to the ancestors and gods, freed from all sins, is honored in Brahmaloka.

Verse 16 (skanda.3.42.16)

apy ekaṁ bhojayed vipram etat tīrthataṭe'male tenāsau karmaṇā tv atra paratrāpi ca modate

Even by feeding but a single brahmin on the bank of this pure tirtha, by that deed one rejoices both here and in the world beyond.

Verse 17 (skanda.3.42.17)

brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdro vāpy anya eva vā asmiṁs tīrthavare snātvā viyoniṁ na prayāti vai

A brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya, shudra, or anyone else at all, having bathed in this excellent tirtha, does not go to a degraded birth.

Verse 18 (skanda.3.42.18)

pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātīrthe puṇyayogeṣu yo naraḥ snāyāt sa manujaśreṣṭho narakaṁ naiva paśyati

The man who bathes in this great Pandava tirtha at auspicious conjunctions of time, that foremost of men, never beholds hell.

Verse 19 (skanda.3.42.19)

Whoever remembers this great Pandava tirtha morning and evening, he has, without doubt, bathed in all tirthas — the Ganga and the rest.

Verse 20 (skanda.3.42.20)

indrādidevatābhiś ca yatreṣṭaṁ daityaśāntaye tad anyad devatīrthākhyaṁ vidyate gandhamādane

There where Indra and the other gods performed sacrifice for the pacification of the daityas, that other place named Devatirtha exists on Mount Gandhamadana.

Verse 21 (skanda.3.42.21)

devatīrthe naraḥ snātvā sarvapāpavimocitaḥ prāpnuyād akṣayāṁl lokān sarvakāmasamanvitān

A man, bathing at Devatirtha, freed from all sin, attains imperishable worlds furnished with every desire.

Verse 22 (skanda.3.42.22)

janmaprabhṛti yat pāpaṁ striyā vā puruṣeṇa vā kṛtaṁ tad devakuṇḍe'smin snānāt sadyo vinaśyati

Whatever sin, from birth onward, has been committed by a woman or a man, is instantly destroyed by bathing in this Devakunda.

Verse 23 (skanda.3.42.23)

yathā surāṇāṁ sarveṣām ādir vai madhusūdanaḥ tathādiḥ sarvatīrthānāṁ devakuṇḍam anuttamam

As Madhusudana is the foremost among all the gods, so this most excellent Devakunda is the foremost among all tirthas.

Verse 24 (skanda.3.42.24)

yas tu varṣaśataṁ pūrṇam agnihotram upāsate yas tv eko devakuṇḍe'smin kadācit snānam ācaret

He who worships the agnihotra fire for a full hundred years, and he who bathes but once in this Devakunda—

Verse 25 (skanda.3.42.25)

samam eva tayoḥ puṇyaṁ nātra sandehakāraṇam durlabhaṁ devatīrthe'smin dānaṁ vāsaś ca durlabhaḥ

the merit of both is exactly equal — there is no cause for doubt here. Both giving and dwelling at this Devatirtha are hard to attain.

Verse 26 (skanda.3.42.26)

devatīrthābhigamanaṁ snānaṁ cāpy atidurlabham devatīrthaṁ samāsādya devarṣipitṛsevitam

Both reaching Devatirtha and bathing there are exceedingly rare. Having attained Devatirtha, attended by gods, sages, and ancestors,

Verse 27 (skanda.3.42.27)

aśvamedham avāpnoti viṣṇulokaṁ ca gacchati dvidinaṁ tridinaṁ cāpi pañca vātha ṣaḍ eva vā

a man obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice and goes to Vishnuloka. For two days, three days, or even five or six days—

Verse 28 (skanda.3.42.28)

uṣitvā devakuṇḍasthatīre narakanāśane na mātṛyonim āpnoti siddhiṁ cāpnoty anuttamām

—having dwelt upon the bank of this hell-destroying Devakunda, one does not enter a mother's womb again, but attains the highest perfection.

Verse 29 (skanda.3.42.29)

trirātrasnānato hy atra vājapeyaphalaṁ bhavet devatīrthasmṛteḥ sadyaḥ pāpebhyo mucyate naraḥ

By bathing here for three nights, one obtains the fruit of the Vajapeya sacrifice. By merely remembering Devatirtha, a man is instantly freed from sins.

Verse 30 (skanda.3.42.30)

arcayitvā pitṝn devān etat tīrthataṭe naraḥ sarvakāmasamṛddhiḥ syāt sarvayajñaphalaṁ labhet

A man, having worshipped the ancestors and gods on the bank of this tirtha, becomes rich in every desire and obtains the fruit of every sacrifice.

Verse 31 (skanda.3.42.31)

etattīrthasamaṁ puṇyaṁ na bhūtaṁ na bhaviṣyati tasmād avaśyaṁ snātavyaṁ devatīrthe mumukṣubhiḥ

Merit equal to this tirtha's has never been, nor shall ever be. Therefore those who seek liberation must certainly bathe at Devatirtha.

Verse 32 (skanda.3.42.32)

aihikāmuṣmikaphalaprāptikāmaiś ca mānavaiḥ devatīrthasya māhātmyaṁ saṅkṣipya kathitaṁ dvijāḥ

—by men who desire the fruits of both this world and the next. O brahmins, I have told the glory of Devatirtha in brief.

Verse 33 (skanda.3.42.33)

vistareṇāsya māhātmyaṁ mayā vaktuṁ na pāryate sugrīvatīrthaṁ vakṣyāmi rāmasetau vimuktide

It is not possible for me to relate its glory in full detail. I shall now tell of the Sugriva tirtha, in the liberation-giving bridge of Rama.

Verse 34 (skanda.3.42.34)

atra snātvā naro bhaktyā sūryalokaṁ samaśnute sugrīvatīrthe snānena hayamedhaphalaṁ bhavet

Atonement even for the sin of slaying a brahmin comes about. By merely going to Sugriva tirtha, one obtains the fruit of donating a thousand cows.

Verse 36 (skanda.3.42.36)

smaraṇāt tasya vedānāṁ pārāyaṇaphalaṁ labhet dinopavāsamātreṇa tasya tīrthasya tīrataḥ

By merely remembering it, one obtains the fruit of a full recitation of the Vedas. By fasting for just one day upon the bank of that tirtha,

Verse 37 (skanda.3.42.37)

mahāpātakanāśaḥ syāt prāyaścittaṁ vinā dvijāḥ tatrābhiṣekaṁ kurvāṇaḥ pitṛdevāṁś ca tarpayet

O brahmins, the destruction of great sins occurs without any other atonement. One who performs ritual bathing there and offers libations to ancestors and gods,

Verse 38 (skanda.3.42.38)
