vyāsa uvāca śrūyatāṁ rājaśārdūla puṇyamākhyānamuttamam stūyamāno jagannātha idaṁ vacanamabravīt

Vyasa said: Listen, O tiger among kings, to this excellent and meritorious tale. Being thus praised, the Lord of the universe spoke these words.

Verse 2 (skanda.3.61.2)

viṣṇuruvāca kimarthamāgatāḥ sarve brahmādyāḥ surasattamāḥ pṛthivyāṁ kuśalaṁ kaccitkuto vo bhayamāgatam

Vishnu said: For what reason have you all come, O Brahma and the other foremost gods? Is all well upon the earth? From where has fear come upon you?

Verse 3 (skanda.3.61.3)

tataḥ provāca vai hṛṣṭo brahmā taṁ keśavaṁ vacaḥ na bhayaṁ vidyate'smākaṁ trailokye sacarācare

Then Brahma, delighted, spoke these words to Keshava: "We have no fear anywhere in the three worlds, whether moving or unmoving."

Verse 4 (skanda.3.61.4)

ekavijñāpanārthāya āgato'haṁ tavāṁtike tadahaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi tadetacchṛṇu me vacaḥ

I have come into your presence to make one single request; I shall now speak it — hear these my words.

Verse 5 (skanda.3.61.5)

paraṁ tu pūrvaṁ dharmeṇa sthāpitaṁ tīrthamuttamam taddraṣṭukāmo'haṁ deva tvatprasādājjanārdana

There is a supreme place of pilgrimage, established long ago by Dharma; I desire, O god Janardana, to behold it by your grace.

Verse 6 (skanda.3.61.6)

tatra tvaṁ devadeveśa gamane kuru mānasam yathā sattīrthatāṁ yāti dharmāraṇyamanuttamam

O Lord of the gods, set your mind on going there, so that this unsurpassed Dharmaranya may attain true sanctity as a tirtha through your visit.

Verse 7 (skanda.3.61.7)

viṣṇuruvāca sādhusādhu mahābhāga tvaryatāṁ tatra mā ciram mamāpi cittaṁ tatraiva taddarśanesti lālasam

Vishnu said: Well spoken, well spoken, illustrious one! Let us hasten there without delay; my mind, too, is set upon it, longing for the sight of it.

Verse 8 (skanda.3.61.8)

vyāsa uvāca tārkṣyamāruhya goviṁda statrāgācchīghrameva hi tato dharmeṇa te devāḥ seṁdrāḥ sarṣigaṇāstathā

Vyasa said: Mounting Garuda, Govinda went there swiftly indeed; then Dharma welcomed those gods, together with Indra and the assembled sages.

Verse 9 (skanda.3.61.9)

brahmaviṣṇumaheśādyā dṛṣṭā dūrānmumoda ca dharmarājopi tāndṛṣṭvā devā nviṣṇupurogamān

Seeing Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesha and the rest from afar, he rejoiced; and Dharmaraja too, beholding those gods with Vishnu at their head —

Verse 10 (skanda.3.61.10)

āgataḥ svāśramāttatra pūjāṁ pragṛhya tatpuraḥ āsanādutthitaḥ śīghraṁ saparyādyaṁ pragṛhya ca ekaikasya cakārātha pūjāṁ caiva pṛthakpṛthak

— came forth from his hermitage, bringing the materials of worship before them; rising swiftly from his seat and taking up the honours, he then performed worship for each of them separately.

Verse 11 (skanda.3.61.11)

cakāra pūjāṁ vidhivatteṣāṁ tatrārkanaṁdanaḥ āsaneṣūpaveśyātha pūjāṁ kṛtvā garīyasīm

There, the son of the Sun (Yama, Dharmaraja) duly performed worship for them; having seated them upon their seats, he offered them the most solemn worship.

Verse 12 (skanda.3.61.12)

yama uvāca tīrtharūpamidaṁ kṣetraṁ prasādāddevakīsuta tvattoṣavidhinā cādya kṛpayā ca śivasya ca

Yama said: By your grace, O son of Devaki, and through your favour and the grace of Shiva as well, this field has today become a very tirtha.

Verse 13 (skanda.3.61.13)

adya me saphalaṁ janma adya me saphalaṁ tapaḥ adya me saphalaṁ sthānaṁ kājeśānāṁ samāgamāt

Today my birth has borne fruit, today my austerity has borne fruit, today my very abode has borne fruit, through this gathering of the Kajesha deities.

Verse 14 (skanda.3.61.14)

vyāsa uvāca evaṁ stutastadā viṣṇuḥ provāca madhuraṁ vacaḥ tuṣṭo'smi dharma rājeṁdra ahaṁ stotreṇa te vibho

Vyasa said: Thus praised, Vishnu then spoke sweet words: "I am pleased, O Dharma, lord of kings — pleased, O mighty one, by your hymn of praise."

Verse 15 (skanda.3.61.15)

kiṁcitprārthaya matto'haṁ karomi tava vāṁchitam yatte'styabhīpsitaṁ tubhyaṁ taddadāmi na saṁśayaḥ

Ask something of me, and I shall grant your desire. Whatever it is you long for, that I shall give you — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 16 (skanda.3.61.16)

yama uvāca yadi tuṣṭo'si deveśa vāṁchitaṁ kuruṣe yadi dharmāraṇye mahāpuṇye ṛṣīṇāmāśramānkuru

Yama said: If you are pleased, O Lord of the gods, and willing to grant my wish, then establish hermitages of sages in this greatly meritorious Dharmaranya.

Verse 17 (skanda.3.61.17)

vasaṁti vāḍavā yatra yajaṁti caiva yājñikāḥ vedanirghoṣasaṁyuktaṁ bhāti tattīrthamuttamam

Where brahmins dwell, sacrificers perform their rites, and the place resounds with the chant of the Vedas — such a supreme tirtha truly shines forth.

Verse 18 (skanda.3.61.18)

abrāhmaṇamidaṁ tīrthaṁ pīḍayiṣyaṁti jantavaḥ tasmāttvaṁ vāḍavāñchaure samānaya ṛṣī nbahūn dharmāraṇyaṁ yathā bhāti trailokye sacarācare

Without brahmins, this tirtha will be troubled by wild creatures; therefore, O Shauri, bring here many brahmin sages, so that Dharmaranya may shine throughout the three worlds, moving and unmoving.

Verse 19 (skanda.3.61.19)

Then Vishnu, thousand-eyed, thousand-headed, thousand-footed, dear to Dharma, assumed a thousandfold form; and wherever there were brahmins of good conduct and auspicious vows —

Verse 20 (skanda.3.61.20)

— skilled in the whole of dharma, learned in every scripture, greatly renowned in austerity and knowledge, devoted to the Brahma-sacrifice — all such sages, eighteen thousand in number, were established there.

Verse 21 (skanda.3.61.21)

Gathered together from various lands, they were established there by those gods; and many hermitages too were fashioned there by the Kajesha deities.

Verse 22 (skanda.3.61.22)

dharmopadeśātkṛṣṇena brahmaṇā ca śivena ca svesve sthāne yathāyogye sthāpayāmāsa keśavaḥ

At the instruction of Dharma, Keshava, together with Brahma and Shiva, established each one fittingly in his own proper place.

Verse 23 (skanda.3.61.23)

Yudhishthira said: In what lineages were born these brahmins, learned in the Vedas, who were established there together with their families, surrounded by sons and grandsons, attended by many disciples, devoted to the fire-sacrifice? Tell me truly their places and their names.

Verse 24 (skanda.3.61.24)

There are twenty-four gotras of the twice-born, O bull of the Pandavas; and their branches, sub-branches, and descendants as well —

— the brahmins attained peace and well-being, surrounded by their sons and grandsons. Then the gods, together with the gandharvas, their hearts full of joy, mounted their splendid celestial cars and, those drinkers of ambrosia, departed for heaven.

Verse 114 (skanda.3.61.114)

gate varṣaśate rājanbrahmaviṣṇumaheśvarāḥ smṛtvā tu dharmāraṇyasya prekṣaṇārthaṁ kutūhalāt

When a hundred years had passed, O king, Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara, recalling Dharmaranya and moved by curiosity to see it once more —

Verse 115 (skanda.3.61.115)

samājagmustadā rājanprabhāte udite ravau vimānavaramāruhya apsarogaṇasevitāḥ

— then, O king, at dawn as the sun rose, they gathered there together, mounted upon splendid celestial cars, attended by hosts of apsarasas.

Verse 116 (skanda.3.61.116)

gaṁdharvair gīyamānāste stūyamānāḥ prabodhakaiḥ tatra sthāne dvijā rājansamitpuṣpakuśānbahūn

Sung to by gandharvas, and praised by those who chant at dawn, they arrived there. But the brahmins of that place, O king, had gone out for much sacred fuel, flowers, and kusha grass —

Verse 117 (skanda.3.61.117)

āśramāṁstānparityajya gatāḥ sarve diśo daśa tamāśramapadaṁ dṛṣṭvā śūnyaṁ caiva maheśvaraḥ

— leaving their hermitages behind, all of them had gone out in the ten directions to gather materials. Seeing that hermitage grounds empty, Maheshvara —

Verse 118 (skanda.3.61.118)

uvāca vākyaṁ dharmajño vāḍavānkliśate vibho śuśūṣārthaṁ hi śuśrūṣankalpayediti me matiḥ

— the knower of dharma spoke these words: "O mighty ones, this troubles the brahmins greatly. It is my opinion that some arrangement should be made for their service and attendance."

Verse 119 (skanda.3.61.119)

śrutvā tu vacanaṁ śaṁbhordevadevo janārdanaḥ satyaṁsatyamiti procya brahmāṇamidamabravīt

Having heard the words of Shambhu, Janardana, the god of gods, said "True indeed, true indeed," and then spoke thus to Brahma.

Verse 120 (skanda.3.61.120)

bhobho brahmandvijātīnāṁ śuśrūṣārthaṁ prakalpaya sṛṣṭirhi śāśvatīvādya dvijoghopi sukhī bhavet viṣṇorvākyamabhiśrutya brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ

"O Brahma, arrange for the service of the twice-born, so that this creation may endure as if everlasting, and the whole community of brahmins may today be made happy." Hearing these words of Vishnu, Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds —

Verse 121 (skanda.3.61.121)

saṁsmarankāmadhenuṁ vai smaraṇenaiva tatkṣaṇe āgatā tatra sā dhenurdharmāraṇye pavitrake

— called Kamadhenu to mind; and at that very act of remembrance, in that same instant, that cow arrived there, in sacred Dharmaranya.
