brahmovāca śṛṇu putra pravakṣyāmi rahasyaṁ paramaṁ matam ete brahmavidaḥ proktāś cāturvidyā mahā dvijāḥ

Brahma said: Listen, my child, I shall declare a supreme, secret teaching. These great twice-born, called the Chaturvidya, are known as knowers of Brahman —

Verse 2 (skanda.3.91.2)

svādhyāyāś ca vaṣaṭkārāḥ svadhākārāś ca nityaśaḥ rāmājñāpālakāś caiva hanumadbhaktitatparāḥ

— ever engaged in Vedic recitation, uttering the ritual exclamations vaṣaṭ and svadhā; upholders of Rama's command, and devoted to the worship of Hanuman.

Verse 3 (skanda.3.91.3)

ekadā tu tato devā brahmāṇaṁ samupāgatāḥ brāhmaṇān draṣṭukāmās te brahmaviṣṇupurogamāḥ

Once, the gods, led by Brahma and Vishnu, came to Brahma, desiring to see those brahmins.

Verse 4 (skanda.3.91.4)

tān devān āgatān dṛṣṭvā svasthānāc calitās tu te argapādyaṁ puraskṛtya madhuparkaṁ tathaiva ca

Seeing those gods arrive, the brahmins rose from their places, bringing forward arghya, pādya, and madhuparka.

Verse 5 (skanda.3.91.5)

pūjayitvā tato viprā devān brahmapurogamān brahmātra upaviṣṭās te vedān uccārayanti hi

Having worshipped the gods led by Brahma, the brahmins, seated there, recited the Vedas.

Verse 6 (skanda.3.91.6)

They recited, in a loud voice, the verses of the Rigveda Samhita in the Saṁhitā, Pada, Krama, and Ghana methods of recitation.

Verse 7 (skanda.3.91.7)

The Sāma-chanters performed manifold hymns, treatises, and the sacrificial and preliminary recitations.

Verse 8 (skanda.3.91.8)

caturakṣaraṁ paraṁ caiva caturakṣaram eva ca dvyakṣaraṁ ca tathā pañcākṣaraṁ dvyakṣaram eva ca etad yajñasvarūpaṁ ca yo japej jñānapūrvakam

The supreme four-syllabled formula, and again the four-syllabled, the two-syllabled, then the five-syllabled, and again the two-syllabled — whoever recites this true form of the sacrifice with knowledge —

Verse 9 (skanda.3.91.9)

ante brahma padaprāptiḥ satyaṁ satyaṁ vadāmy aham ekāgramānasāḥ sarve vedapāṭharatā dvijāḥ

— attains, in the end, the very state of Brahman; I speak the truth, the very truth. All those brahmins, with focused minds, were devoted to Vedic recitation.

Verse 10 (skanda.3.91.10)

teṣām aṅgaṇadeśeṣu kaṇḍūyante kacān mṛgāḥ brāhmaṇā vedamātāṁ ca japanti vidhipūrvakam

In the courtyards of their homes, deer scratched their coats without fear; the brahmins duly recited the mother of the Vedas (the Gayatri).

Verse 11 (skanda.3.91.11)

haste dhṛtāṁś ca tair darbhān bhakṣante mṛgapotakāḥ nirvairaṁ taṁ tadā dṛṣṭvā āśramaṁ gṛhamedhinām

Fawns nibbled at the kusha-grass held in their hands; seeing that peaceful, hostility-free hermitage of the householders —

Verse 12 (skanda.3.91.12)

tutuṣuḥ paramaṁ devā ūcus te ca parasparam tretāyugam idānīṁ ca sarve dharmaparāyaṇāḥ

— the gods were supremely pleased, and said among themselves: "It is as if this were still the Treta Yuga — everyone here is devoted to dharma."

Verse 13 (skanda.3.91.13)

kalir duṣṭas tathā proktaḥ kiṁ kariṣyati pāpakaḥ cāturvidyān samāhūya ūcus te traya eva ca

"Kali is said to be so wicked — what could that sinful age possibly do here?" Then those three gods summoned the Chaturvidya and said —

Verse 14 (skanda.3.91.14)

"For the sake of your livelihood, and that of the Trayividya too, we shall grant you a division; let it be duly upheld."

Verse 15 (skanda.3.91.15)

vaṇijāṁ gṛham āgatya paurohityasya nityaśaḥ bhāgaṁ vibhajya saṁprāpuḥ kājeśena vinirmitāḥ

Coming regularly to the merchants' homes to perform priestly duties, those brahmins, fashioned by Kājeśa, receive their portion, duly divided.

Verse 18 (skanda.3.91.18)

trai vibhāgena trai vidyāś caturbhāgena cātriṇaḥ evaṁ jñātivibhāgas tu kājeśena vinirmitaḥ

"The Trayividya by a three-part division, and the Chaturvidya by a four-part division." Thus was the division of this community established by Kājeśa.

kṛtakṛtyās tu te viprāḥ praṇemus tān surottamān vṛttiṁ dattvā tato devāḥ svasthānaṁ ca pratasthire

Their purpose fulfilled, the brahmins bowed to those excellent gods; then, having granted their livelihood, the gods departed for their own realms.

Verse 277 (skanda.3.91.277)

ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi traividyānāṁ paraṁtapa svasthānaṁ ca mayā proktaṁ yathānukrameṇa tu

O scorcher of foes, hereafter I shall declare, in due order, the home-villages of the Traividya brahmins, those learned in the three Vedas.

Verse 278 (skanda.3.91.278)

śīlāyāḥ prathamaṁ sthānaṁ maṁḍorā ca dvitīyakam evaḍī ca tṛtīyaṁ hi guṁdarāṇā caturthakam

The first village is Śīlā, the second, Maṇḍorā; the third is Evaḍī, and the fourth, Gundarāṇā.

Verse 279 (skanda.3.91.279)

pañcamaṁ kalyāṇīyā degāmā ṣaṣṭhakaṁ tathā nāyakapurā saptamaṁ ca ḍalīā cāṣṭamaṁ tathā

The fifth is Kalyāṇīyā, the sixth, Degāmā; the seventh is Nāyakapurā, and the eighth, Ḍalīā.

Verse 280 (skanda.3.91.280)

kaḍovyā navamaṁ caiva kohāṭoyā daśamaṁ tathā haraḍīyaikādaśaṁ caiva bhadukīyā dvādaśaṁ tathā

The ninth is Kaḍovyā, the tenth, Kohāṭoyā; the eleventh is Haraḍīyā, and the twelfth, Bhadukīyā.

Verse 281 (skanda.3.91.281)

saṁprāṇāvā tathā cātra kaṁdarāvā prakīrtitam vāsarovā trayodaśaṁ śaraṁḍāvā caturdaśam

Here Saṁprāṇāvā and Kandarāvā are also declared; the thirteenth is Vāsarovā, and the fourteenth, Śaraṇḍāvā.

Verse 282 (skanda.3.91.282)

lolāsaṇā pañcadaśaṁ vārolā ṣoḍaśaṁ tathā nāgalapurā mayā cātra uktaṁ saptadaśaṁ tathā

The fifteenth is Lolāsaṇā, the sixteenth, Vārolā; and here I have declared the seventeenth to be Nāgalapurā.

Verse 283 (skanda.3.91.283)

brahmovāca cāturvidyās tu ye viprā nāgatāḥ punarāgatāḥ vasatiṁ tatra ramye ca cakrire te dvijottamāḥ

Brahmā said: Those Cāturvidya brahmins who had not gone away, and those who had gone and returned, those excellent twice-born made their dwelling right there in that lovely place.

Verse 284 (skanda.3.91.284)

caturviṁśatisaṁkhyākā rāmaśāsanalipsayā hanumaṁtaṁ prati gatā vyāvṛttāḥ punarāgatāḥ

Twenty-four in number, they had gone to Hanumān seeking to obtain Rāma's written decree, and having turned back, they returned again.

Verse 285 (skanda.3.91.285)

teṣāṁ doṣāt samastās te sthānabhraṁśatvam āgatāḥ kiyat kāle gate teṣāṁ virodhaḥ samapadyata

Because of this fault, all of them fell from their standing. After some time had passed, discord arose among them.

Verse 286 (skanda.3.91.286)

bhinnācārā bhinnabhāṣā veśasaṁśayam āgatāḥ pañcadaśasahasrāṇi madhye ye ke ca vāḍavāḥ

Their conduct diverged, their speech diverged, even their dress grew questionable. Among those fifteen thousand brahmins, whoever they were —

Verse 287 (skanda.3.91.287)

kṛṣikarmaratā āsan kecid yajñaparāyaṇāḥ kecin mallāś ca saṁjñātāḥ kecid vai vedapāṭhakāḥ

Some took up farming, some remained devoted to sacrifice; some became known as wrestlers, and some remained reciters of the Veda.

Verse 288 (skanda.3.91.288)

āyurvedaratāḥ kecit kecid rajakayājakāḥ saṁdhyāsnānaparāḥ kecin nīlīkartṛprayājakāḥ

Some devoted themselves to Āyurveda, some became priests to washermen; some remained fixed on evening devotions and bathing, and some became officiants for indigo-makers.

Verse 289 (skanda.3.91.289)

taṁtukṛdyācanaratās taṁtuvāyādiyācakāḥ kalau prāpte dvijāḥ bhraṣṭā bhaviṣyaṁti na saṁśayaḥ

Some, engaged in serving and begging from weavers, became beggars attached to weavers and the like. When the Kali age comes, these twice-born will without doubt fall from their standing.

Verse 290 (skanda.3.91.290)

śūdreṣu jātibhedaḥ syāt kalau prāpte narādhipa bhraṣṭācārāḥ paraṁ jñātvā jñātibaṁdhena pīḍitāḥ

O lord of men, when the Kali age comes, divisions of caste will arise even among the śūdras. Recognized as fallen from proper conduct, they will be afflicted by the bonds of community —

Verse 291 (skanda.3.91.291)

O king, in matters of food and clothing they will be abandoned even by their own people; no one will ever marry a daughter to them through such association.

Verse 292 (skanda.3.91.292)

tatas te vaṇijo rājaṁs tailakārāḥ kalau kila kecic ca kalakārāś ca kecit taṁdulakāriṇaḥ

O king, then those merchants, in the Kali age, will become oil-pressers; some will become makers of liquor, some traders in rice.

Verse 293 (skanda.3.91.293)

rājaputrāśritāḥ kecin nānāvarṇasamāśritāḥ kalau prāpte tu vaṇijo bhraṣṭāḥ ke'pi mahītale

Some will take shelter with princes, some will mingle among various varṇas. When the Kali age comes, some of these merchants on earth will fall from their standing.

Verse 294 (skanda.3.91.294)

teṣāṁ tu pṛthagācārāḥ sambandhāś ca pṛthakkṛtā sītāpure ca vasatiḥ keṣāṁcit samajāyata

Their customs became distinct from one another, and so did their kin-relations. Some among them came to dwell in Sītāpura —

Verse 295 (skanda.3.91.295)

sābhramatyās taṭe kecid yatra kutra vyavasthitāḥ sītāpurāt tu ye pūrvaṁ bhayabhītā samāgatāḥ

— some settled here and there along the bank of the Sābhramatī river. Those who had earlier come fleeing in fear from Sītāpura —

Verse 296 (skanda.3.91.296)

sābhramatyuttare kūle śrīkṣetre ye vyavasthitāḥ yadā teṣāṁ padaṁ sthānaṁ dattaṁ vai sukhavāsakam

— settled on the northern bank of the Sābhramatī, in the sacred region, when they were granted a place there to dwell in comfort.

Verse 297 (skanda.3.91.297)

punas te'pi gatāḥ sadyas tasmin sītāpure svayam pañcapañcāśadgrāmāś ca dattās tu punarāgame

Then they too soon went of their own accord back to that same Sītāpura. Upon their return, fifty-five villages were bestowed upon them,

Verse 298 (skanda.3.91.298)

rāmeṇa moḍhaviprāṇāṁ nivāsāṁs teṣu cakrire vṛttibāhyās tu ye viprā dharmāraṇyāṁtarasthitāḥ

and Lord Rāma had dwellings for the Moḍh brahmins built in them. As for those brahmins who were outside a fixed livelihood and had settled within Dharmāraṇya itself —

Verse 299 (skanda.3.91.299)

nāsmākaṁ vaṇijāṁ vṛttau grāmavṛttau na kiṁcana prayojanaṁ hi vipreṁdrā vāso'smākaṁ tu rocate

— they said: O lords among brahmins, we have no interest whatsoever in the merchants' livelihood or in village revenue; dwelling here alone is pleasing to us.

Verse 300 (skanda.3.91.300)

ity ukte samanujñātās traividyais tair dvijottamaiḥ teṣu grāmeṣu te viprāś cāturvidyā dvijottamāḥ

When this was said, those excellent Traividya twice-born granted them permission. In those very villages, those excellent Cāturvidya twice-born brahmins —

Verse 301 (skanda.3.91.301)

svakarmaniratāḥ śāṁtāḥ kṛṣikarmaparāyaṇāḥ dharmāraṇyān nātidūre dhenūḥ saṁcārayaṁti te

— remained devoted to their own work, peaceful of mind, given to farming, and grazed their cattle not far from Dharmāraṇya.

Verse 302 (skanda.3.91.302)

bahavas tatra gopālā vabhūvur dvijabālakāḥ cāturvidyās tu śiśavas teṣāṁ dhenūr acārayan

There, many twice-born boys became cowherds. The children of the Cāturvidya brahmins grazed their cattle.

Verse 303 (skanda.3.91.303)

teṣāṁ bhojanakāmāya annapānādisatkṛtam anayan vai yuvatayo vidhavā api bālakāḥ

For their meals, young women, widows, and even young girls would bring them food and drink, well prepared.

Verse 304 (skanda.3.91.304)

kālena kiyatā rājaṁs teṣāṁ prītir abhūn mithaḥ gopālā bubhujuḥ premṇā kumāryo dvijabālikāḥ

O king, after some time had passed, mutual affection arose between them. Out of that affection, the cowherds came together with those young brahmin girls.

Verse 305 (skanda.3.91.305)

jātāḥ sagarbhās tāḥ sarvā dṛṣṭās tair dvijasattamaiḥ parityaktāś ca sadanād dhikkṛtāḥ pāpakarmaṇā

All of them became pregnant; when the excellent twice-born saw this, they cast them out of their homes, condemning them for their sinful act.

Verse 306 (skanda.3.91.306)

tebhyo jātā kumārā ye kātībhā golakās tathā dhenujās te dharāloke khyātiṁ jagmur dvijottamāḥ

The sons born of them were called Kātībha and Golaka. Under the name Dhenuja, they gained renown on earth, though born of twice-born stock.

Verse 307 (skanda.3.91.307)

vṛttibāhyās tu te viprā bhikṣāṁ kurvaṁti nityaśaḥ anyac ca śrūyatāṁ rājaṁs traividyānāṁ dvijanmanām

Those brahmins who remained outside a fixed livelihood beg for alms daily. O king, now hear further, concerning the twice-born Traividya brahmins.

Verse 308 (skanda.3.91.308)

kuṣṭhī ko'pi tathā paṁgur mūrkho vā badhiro'pi vā kāṇo vāpy atha kubjo vā baddhavāg athavā punaḥ

Some were leprous, some lame, some dull-witted or deaf; some were one-eyed, some hunchbacked, or some afflicted with a stammer —

Verse 309 (skanda.3.91.309)

aprāptakanyakā hy ete cāturvidyān samāśritāḥ vittena mahatā rājan sutāṁs teṣāṁ kumārikāḥ

Unable to find brides, these men took shelter with the Cāturvidya brahmins. O king, by dint of great wealth, the daughters of those brahmins were given in marriage to their sons.

Verse 310 (skanda.3.91.310)

udvāhitās tadā rājaṁs tasmāj jātārbhakās tu ye tridalajās te vikhyātāḥ kṣitiloke'bhavaṁs tataḥ

O king, the children born from those marriages became known on this earth by the name Tridalaja.

Verse 311 (skanda.3.91.311)

vṛttiṁ cakrur brāhmaṇās te'nyonyaṁ miśrasamudbhavāḥ anyac ca śrūyatāṁ rājaṁs traividyānāṁ dvijanmanām

Those brahmins, of mixed origin, took up livelihoods intermingled with one another. O king, now hear further, concerning the twice-born Traividya brahmins.

Verse 312 (skanda.3.91.312)

rāmadattena grāmeṇa karagrahaṇahetave ekībhūya dvijaiḥ sarvair grāmaṁ pradāya taṁ balim

For the purpose of collecting the tax from the village granted by Rāma, all the brahmins, acting together, handed that village over to a merchant to gather the levy,

Verse 313 (skanda.3.91.313)

ardhaṁ nivedayāmāsur ardhaṁ caivoparakṣitam etal labdhaṁ hi manvānās te dvijā laulyabhāginaḥ

He reported half the collection to the brahmins and secretly kept back the other half. Believing they had received all that was due, those greed-inclined brahmins —

Verse 314 (skanda.3.91.314)

mahāsthānagatā ye ca te hi vismayam āyayuḥ tanmadhye ko'pi vipras tān uvāca kupito vacaḥ

— who had gathered at the great assembly place, were struck with astonishment. Among them, a certain brahmin, filled with anger, spoke these words to them.

Verse 315 (skanda.3.91.315)

vipra uvāca anṛtaṁ caiva bhāṣaṁte laulyena mahatā vṛtāḥ putrapautravināśāya brahmasveṣv atilolupāḥ

The brahmin said: Gripped by great greed, these men speak falsehood; in their excessive craving for brahmin-wealth, they bring destruction upon their own sons and grandsons.

Verse 316 (skanda.3.91.316)

na viṣaṁ viṣam ity āhur brahmasvaṁ viṣam ucyate viṣam ekākinaṁ haṁti brahmasvaṁ putrapautrakam

Ordinary poison is not truly called poison — brahmin-wealth wrongfully seized is called poison. Ordinary poison kills only the one who takes it; brahmin-wealth destroys sons and grandsons besides.

Verse 317 (skanda.3.91.317)

By misappropriated brahmin-wealth, one's sons, wife, home, and all else are consumed; and even the ill-gotten wealth, having destroyed them, does not itself endure.

Verse 318 (skanda.3.91.318)

na nākaṁ labhate so'tha sadā brahmasvahārakaḥ yadā varāṭikāṁ caiva brāhmaṇasya haraṁti ye

One who habitually seizes brahmin-wealth never attains heaven. Those who steal from a brahmin even so much as a single cowrie —

Verse 319 (skanda.3.91.319)

tato janmatrayāṇy eva hartā nirayam āvrajet pūrvajā nopabhuṁjaṁti tatpradattaṁ jalaṁ kvacit

— such a thief goes to hell for three lifetimes. His ancestors will never even partake of the water he offers them.

Verse 320 (skanda.3.91.320)

kṣayāhe nopabhuṁjaṁti tasya piṇḍodakakriyāḥ saṁtatiṁ naiva labhate labhyamānā na jīvati

Even on the death-anniversary rite, they do not accept his offerings of rice-balls and water. He obtains no offspring; and if any is obtained, it does not survive.

Verse 321 (skanda.3.91.321)

yadi jīvati daivāc ced bhraṣṭācārā bhaved iti ekādaśaviprā ūcuḥ nāsatyaṁ bhāṣitaṁ viprāḥ kathaṁ dūṣayase hi naḥ

And if by chance it does survive, it becomes one of corrupt conduct. Hearing this, the eleven brahmins said: O brahmin, we have not spoken falsely — why then do you accuse us?

Verse 322 (skanda.3.91.322)

aparādhaṁ vinā kasya kaṭūktir yujyate kila tac chrutvā tair dvijaiḥ pārtha grāmagrāhayitā vaṇik

How can harsh words be justified against anyone without an offense? O Pārtha, hearing this, those brahmins summoned the merchant who had been appointed to collect the village's dues,

Verse 323 (skanda.3.91.323)

paripṛṣṭaḥ sa tatsarvaṁ kathayāmāsa kāraṇam vaṇijair eva me datto baliś ca dvijasattamāḥ

When questioned, he explained the whole matter — O excellent twice-born, whatever levy the merchants themselves had given to me,

Verse 324 (skanda.3.91.324)

tatsarvaṁ śuddhabhāvena kathitaṁ tu dvijanmasu tato'rdhadalaṁ jñātvā te kupitā dvijaputrakāḥ

— all of it I reported to the brahmins in good faith. Then, learning that only half had been disclosed to them, those brahmin sons grew furious,

Verse 325 (skanda.3.91.325)

vṛtter bahiṣkṛtās te vai ekādaśa dvijās tataḥ ekādaśasamā jñātir vikhyātā bhuvanatraye

and those eleven brahmins were expelled from their shared livelihood. From then on, the community known as 'Ekādaśasamā' — the eleven-equal — became renowned throughout the three worlds.

Verse 326 (skanda.3.91.326)

With them there is neither kinship nor marriage. Those who belong to the Ekādaśasamā dwell only outside the village.

Verse 327 (skanda.3.91.327)

evaṁ bhedāḥ samabhavan nānā moḍhadvijanmanām yugānusārāt kālena jñātīnāṁ ca vṛṣasya vā

Thus, over time, in keeping with the ages, many divisions arose among the communities and the moral order of the Moḍh twice-born.

Verse 328 (skanda.3.91.328)

iti śrī skāṁde mahāpurāṇe ekāśītisāhasryāṁ saṁhitāyāṁ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe pūrvabhāge dharmāraṇyamāhātmye jñātibhedavarṇanaṁ nāmaikonacatvāriṁśo'dhyāyaḥ

Thus concludes the thirty-ninth chapter, called 'The Description of the Divisions among the Community', within the Glory of Dharmaranya, in the earlier portion of the third Brahma Khanda, in the Skanda Mahapurana's Samhita of eighty-one thousand verses.
