There, having duly established a linga named after himself, Angarakeshvara, at the great place Panchamudra, to the north of Kambalashvatara...

gurupūjāṁ vyadhuḥ sarve gīrvāṇā muditānanāḥ abhiṣikto vasiṣṭhādyairmaṁtrapūtena vāriṇā
All the gods, their faces filled with joy, performed worship of the guru; he was consecrated by Vasishtha and the others with water purified by mantras.
Verse 58 (skanda.4.17.58)
punaranyaṁ varaṁ prādādgirīśaḥ pataye girām śṛṇvāṁgirasa dharmātman devejyakulanaṁdana
The lord of the mountain then granted yet another boon to the lord of speech: 'Listen, O son of Angiras, righteous soul, joy of the lineage of the gods' priests.'
Verse 59 (skanda.4.17.59)
bhavatāsthāpitaṁ liṁgaṁ subuddhiparivardhanam bṛhaspatīśvara iti khyātaṁ kāśyāṁ bhaviṣyati
'This linga established by you, which increases sound intelligence, shall become known in Kashi by the name Brihaspatishvara.'
Verse 60 (skanda.4.17.60)
gurupuṣyasamāyoge liṁgametatsamarcya ca yatkariṣyaṁti manujāstatsiddhimadhiyāsyati
'Whatever men shall undertake, having worshipped this linga at the conjunction of Guru and Pushya nakshatra, shall attain success.'
Verse 61 (skanda.4.17.61)
bṛhaspatīśvaraṁ liṁgaṁ mayā gopyaṁ kalau yuge asya saṁdarśanādeva pratibhā pratilabhyate
'This linga Brihaspatishvara is to be kept secret by me in the Kali age; by the mere sight of it, brilliance of intellect is regained.'
Verse 62 (skanda.4.17.62)
caṁdreśvarāddakṣiṇato vīreśānnairṛte sthitam ārādhya dhiṣaṇeśaṁ vai guruloke mahīyate
'Situated to the south of Chandreshvara, and southwest of Vireshvara -- having worshipped the lord of intellect, one is exalted in the world of Guru.'
Verse 63 (skanda.4.17.63)
gurvaṁganā gamanajaṁ pāpaṁ ṣaṇmāsa sevanāt avaśyaṁ vilayaṁ yāti tamaḥ sūryodayādyathā
'The sin born of approaching the wife of one's guru is surely dissolved by six months' devotion here, as darkness is dissolved by the rising of the sun.'
Verse 64 (skanda.4.17.64)
ataeva hi goptavyaṁ mahāpātakanāśanam bṛhaspatīśvaraṁ liṁgaṁ nākhyeyaṁ yasyakasyacit
'Therefore this linga Brihaspatishvara, destroyer of the greatest sins, must be kept guarded, and not spoken of to just anyone.'
Verse 65 (skanda.4.17.65)
iti dattvā varāndevastatraivāṁtarhito bhavat druhiṇo guruṇā sārdhaṁ seṁdropeṁdro bṛhaspatim
Having granted these boons, the god vanished there itself. Brahma, together with the guru, and Indra and Upendra...
Verse 66 (skanda.4.17.66)
asminpurebhiṣicyātha visṛjyeṁdrādikānsurān alaṁcakāra svaṁ lokaṁ viṣṇunā'numato dvija
...having anointed him in this city, and having dismissed Indra and the other gods, adorned his own world, O brahmin, with the approval of Vishnu.
Verse 67 (skanda.4.17.67)
agastya uvāca atikramya gurorlokaṁ lopāmudre dadarśa saḥ śivaśarmā purī saureḥ prabhāmaṁḍala maṁḍitām
Agastya said: Having passed beyond the world of Guru, O Lopamudra, that Shivasharma then beheld the city of the son of Surya, adorned with a halo of light.
Verse 68 (skanda.4.17.68)
pṛṣṭau tena ca tau tatra tāṁ purīṁ pradadarśatuḥ dvijena dvijavaryāya gaṇavaryau śucismite
O pure-smiling one, questioned by that brahmin there, the two excellent ganas then described that city to that finest of brahmins.
Verse 69 (skanda.4.17.69)
gaṇāvūcatuḥ mārīceḥ kaśyapājjajñe dākṣāyaṇyāṁ dvijoṣṇaguḥ tasyabhāryābhavatsaṁjñā putrī tvaṣṭuḥ prajāpateḥ
The two ganas said: From Kashyapa, the son of Marichi, was born the twice-born, warm-rayed Surya, through the daughter of Daksha. His wife was Sanjna, the daughter of Tvashtri, the Prajapati.
Verse 70 (skanda.4.17.70)
bharturiṣṭā tatastasmādrūpayauvanaśālinī saṁjñā babhūva tapasā sudīptena samanvitā
Beloved of her husband, and endowed with beauty and youth, Sanjna, through her own brilliant austerity, became radiant.
Verse 71 (skanda.4.17.71)
ādityasya hi tadrūpaṁ maṁḍalasya tu tejasā gātreṣu paridadhyau vai nātikāṁtamivābhavat
Through the splendor of the sun's orb, that very form of the Aditya took hold upon her limbs; it seemed almost too much to bear.
Verse 72 (skanda.4.17.72)
na khalvayamṛtoṁ'ḍastha iti snehādabhāṣata tadā prabhṛti lokeyaṁ mārtaṁḍa iti cocyate
'Surely this one is not dead within the egg' -- thus she spoke out of affection; from that time on, in this world, he came to be called Martanda.
Verse 73 (skanda.4.17.73)
tejastvabhyadhikaṁ tasya sā'sahiṣṇurvivasvataḥ yenātitāpayāmāsa trailokyaṁ tigmaraśmibhṛt
But she could not bear the excessive splendor of Vivasvan, by which that bearer of scorching rays scorched the three worlds.
Verse 74 (skanda.4.17.74)
trīṇyapatyāni bho brahmansaṁjñāyāṁ mahasāṁ nidhiḥ ādityo janayāmāsa kanyāṁ dvau ca prajāpatī
O brahmin, upon Sanjna, that treasury of splendor, Aditya begot three children -- one daughter and two future Prajapatis.
Verse 75 (skanda.4.17.75)
vaivasvataṁ manuṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ yamaṁ ca yamunāṁ tataḥ nātitejomayaṁ rūpaṁ soḍhuṁ sā'laṁ vivasvataḥ
Vaivasvata Manu, the eldest, and Yama, and then Yamuna. She was unable to endure the excessively splendorous form of Vivasvan.
Verse 76 (skanda.4.17.76)
māyāmayīṁ tataśchāyāṁ savarṇāṁ nirmame svataḥ prāṁjaliḥ praṇatā bhūtvā saṁjñāṁ chāyā tadābravīt
So she then fashioned from herself an illusory shadow-double, Chhaya, of her own likeness; and Chhaya, with folded hands, bowing, then said to Sanjna:
Verse 77 (skanda.4.17.77)
tavājñākāriṇīṁ devi śādhi māṁ karavāṇi kim saṁjñovāca tataśchāyāṁ savarṇe śṛṇu suṁdari
'O goddess, I am obedient to your command; instruct me -- what shall I do?' Sanjna then said to Chhaya: 'Listen, O one of my own likeness, O lovely one.'
Verse 78 (skanda.4.17.78)
ahaṁ yāsyāmi sadanaṁ tvaṣṭustvaṁ punaratra me bhavane vasa kalyāṇi nirviśaṁkaṁ mamājñayā
'I shall go to the house of Tvashtri; you, meanwhile, O auspicious one, dwell here in my home without any hesitation, by my command.'
Verse 79 (skanda.4.17.79)
manureṣa yamāvetau yamunā yama saṁjñakau svāpatyadṛṣṭyā draṣṭavyametadbālatrayaṁ tvayā
'This is Manu, and these two are Yamuna and Yama; this trio of children is to be regarded by you as though they were your own.'
Verse 80 (skanda.4.17.80)
anākhyeyamidaṁ vṛttaṁ tvayā patyau śucismite ityākarṇyātha sā tvāṣṭrīṁ devīṁ chāyā jagāda ha
'This matter is not to be revealed by you to my husband, O pure-smiling one.' Having heard this, Chhaya then spoke to that goddess, daughter of Tvashtri:
Verse 81 (skanda.4.17.81)
ākacagrahaṇānnāhamāśāpācca kadācana ākhyāsyāmi caritraṁ te yāhi devi yathāsukham
'I shall never reveal your secret, even if seized by the hair, or from any hope of reward. Go, O goddess, as you please.'
Verse 82 (skanda.4.17.82)
ityādiśya savarṇāṁ sā tathetyuktā savarṇayā pituraṁtikamāsādya natvā tvaṣṭāramabravīt
Having thus instructed her likeness, and being told 'so be it' by her, she went to her father's presence, and, bowing, said to Tvashtri:
Verse 83 (skanda.4.17.83)
pitaḥ soḍhuṁ na śaknomi tejastejonidheraham tīvraṁ tasyāryaputrasya kāśyapasya mahātmanaḥ
'Father, I am unable to bear the fierce splendor of that treasury of light, the great-souled son of Kashyapa, my noble husband.'
Verse 84 (skanda.4.17.84)
niśamyodīritaṁ tasyāḥ pitrānirbhartsitā bahu bhartuḥ samīpaṁ yāhīti niyuktā sā punaḥpunaḥ
Hearing what she said, she was severely rebuked by her father, and was urged again and again: 'Go back to your husband's side.'
Verse 85 (skanda.4.17.85)
ciṁtāmavāpa mahatīṁ strīṇāṁ dhikceṣṭitaṁ tviti niniṁda bahudhātmānaṁ strītvaṁ cāti niniṁda sā
She fell into deep anxiety: 'Shame on the conduct of women!' -- thus she reproached herself in many ways, and utterly reproached her own state of womanhood.
Verse 86 (skanda.4.17.86)
svātaṁtryaṁ na kvacitstrīṇāṁ dhigasvātaṁtryajīvitam śaiśave yauvane prāṁte pitṛbhartṛsutādbhayam
'Women have no independence anywhere -- shame on a life without independence! In childhood, in youth, and at the end, there is dependence and fear from father, husband, and son.'
Verse 87 (skanda.4.17.87)
tyaktaṁ bhartṛgṛhaṁ maugdhyāddhaṁta duvṛrttayā mayā avijñātāpi cedyāyāmatha patyurniketanam
'Alas, out of folly and wicked conduct, I have abandoned my husband's home; yet if I now go, unrecognized, to my husband's dwelling...'
Verse 88 (skanda.4.17.88)
tatrāsti sā savarṇā vai paripūrṇamanorathā athāvatiṣṭhe sātraiva pitrā nirbhartsitāpyaham
'...there is my very likeness Savarna, her own desire now fully realized. So, even though rebuked by my father, I shall remain here itself.'
Verse 89 (skanda.4.17.89)
tatoti caṁḍaścaṁḍāśuḥ pitroratibhayaṁkaraḥ aho yaducyate lokairupākhyānamidaṁ hi tat
Then, exceedingly terrifying even to her own parents -- ah, this is that very story told among people --
Verse 90 (skanda.4.17.90)
sphuṭaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ mayādyeti svakarāṁgārakarṣaṇam naṣṭaṁ bhartṛgṛhaṁ maugdhyācchreyo vā na piturgṛham
...she said: 'I have clearly seen today, testing it with my own hand upon a burning coal, that my husband's home is lost through my own folly, and yet my father's home offers no true good either.'
Verse 91 (skanda.4.17.91)
vayaśca prathamaṁ cāru rūpaṁ trailokyakāṁkṣitam sarvābhibhavanaṁ strītvaṁ kulaṁ cātīva nirmalam
'My youth is at its very first bloom, my form lovely, desired by the three worlds; yet womanhood is overcome by everything, however pure and stainless my lineage.'
Verse 92 (skanda.4.17.92)
patiśca tādṛksarvajño lokacakṣustamopahaḥ sarveṣāṁ karmaṇāṁ sākṣī sarvaḥ sarvatrasaṁcaraḥ
'And such is my husband -- omniscient, the eye of the world, the dispeller of darkness, the witness of all deeds, all-pervading, moving everywhere.'
Verse 93 (skanda.4.17.93)
mahyaṁ śreyaḥ kathaṁ vā syāditi sā pariciṁtya ca agacchadvaḍavā bhūtvā tapase paryaniṁditā
'How then might my own good come about?' -- pondering thus, and utterly self-reproached, she went, having taken the form of a mare, to perform austerities.
Verse 94 (skanda.4.17.94)
uttarāṁśca kurūnprāpa caraṁtī nīrasaṁtṛṇam vyuttepe ca tapastīvraṁ patimādhāya cetasi tapobalena tatpatyuḥ sahiṣye teja ityalam
She reached Uttarakuru, grazing on tasteless grass, and performed intense austerity, holding her husband in her heart: 'By the power of this austerity I shall indeed be able to bear my husband's splendor.'
Verse 95 (skanda.4.17.95)
manyamānotha tāṁ saṁjñāṁ savarṇāyāṁ tadā raviḥ sāvarṇiṁ janayāmāsa manumaṣṭamamuttamam
Then Surya, thinking her to be Sanjna, begot upon Savarna the excellent eighth Manu, Savarni.
Verse 96 (skanda.4.17.96)
śanaiścaraṁ dvitīyaṁ ca sutāṁ bhadrāṁ tṛtīyikām savarṇā sveṣvapatyeṣu sāpatnyātstrīsvabhāvataḥ
And also Shanaishchara, the second, and a third, a daughter, Bhadra. Savarna, out of the co-wife's jealousy natural to a woman, showed toward her own children...
Verse 97 (skanda.4.17.97)
cakārābhyadhikaṁ snehaṁ na tathā pūrvajeṣvatha manustatkṣāṁtavāñjyeṣṭho bhakṣyālaṁkāralālane
...an excessive affection, not shown likewise to the first-born children. Manu, the eldest, bore this with patience, even in matters of food and ornaments and pampering.
Verse 98 (skanda.4.17.98)
kaniṣṭheṣvadhikaṁ dṛṣṭvā sāvarṇyādiṣu no yamaḥ kadācidroṣato bālyādbhāvinorthasya gauravāt
But Yama, seeing this excessive favor shown to the younger children Savarni and the rest, once, out of childish anger, and because of the weight of the fate that was to come...
Verse 99 (skanda.4.17.99)
padā saṁtarjayāmāsa yamaḥ saṁjñāsarūpiṇīm taṁ śaśāpa ca sā krodhātsāvarṇerjananī tadā
...threatened, with his foot raised, her who bore the likeness of Sanjna; and she, the mother of Savarni, then cursed him in anger:
Verse 100 (skanda.4.17.100)
jighāṁsatā tvayā pāpa māṁ yadaṁghriḥ samudyataḥ acirāttatpatatveṣa taveti bhṛśaduḥkhitā
'O sinner, since you, wishing to strike me, have raised your foot against me, let that very foot of yours fall off before long' -- thus, deeply distressed, she cursed.
Verse 101 (skanda.4.17.101)
mātṛśāpa paritrasto yamopi pituragrataḥ śaśaṁsa sarvaṁ tadvṛttaṁ rakṣarakṣetyuvāca ca
Terrified by his mother's curse, Yama too went before his father and told him the entire matter, and said, 'Protect me, protect me!'
Verse 102 (skanda.4.17.102)
mātrāsu teṣu sarveṣu vartanīyaṁ samaṁ yataḥ tasyāṁ mayodyataḥ pādo na dehe paripātitaḥ
'One ought to behave equally toward all mothers; my foot was only raised against her -- it did not actually strike her body.'
Verse 103 (skanda.4.17.103)
bālyādvā yadi vā mohāttadbhavānkṣaṁtumarhasi gopate śāpato māturmā patatvaṁghrireṣa me
'Whether from childishness or from delusion, you ought to forgive this act. O lord of cattle, let not this foot of mine fall off because of my mother's curse.'
Verse 104 (skanda.4.17.104)
vivasvānuvāca aparādhasahasrepi jananī na śapetsutam tasmātkimapi bho bāla bhaviṣyatyatra kāraṇam
Vivasvan said: 'Even for a thousand offenses, a mother does not curse her own son; therefore, my child, there must be some other reason at work here.'
Verse 105 (skanda.4.17.105)
yena tvāṁ sā'śapatkrodhāddharmajñaṁ satyavādinam mātṛśāponyathākartuṁ na śakyaḥ kenacitkvacit
'Something made her curse you in anger, though you are one who knows dharma and speaks truth. Yet a mother's curse cannot be undone by anyone, anywhere.'
Verse 106 (skanda.4.17.106)
kṛmayo māṁsamādāya yāsyaṁtyasmānmahītalam itthaṁ tu caritārthaḥ syācchāpastrāto bhavānapi
'Instead of your foot falling off entirely, worms shall take flesh and fall from it to the ground; thus the curse shall be fulfilled in effect, and you too shall be saved.'
Verse 107 (skanda.4.17.107)
iti putraṁ samāśvāsya raviraṁtaḥpuraṁ yayau ciramālokya tāṁ bhāryāmuvāca savitā vacaḥ
Having thus consoled his son, Surya went to the inner apartments. Having gazed for a long while at his wife, Savitri, Surya spoke these words:
Verse 108 (skanda.4.17.108)
ayi bhāmini bāleṣu sameṣvapi kutastvayā vidhīyate'dhikaḥ snehaḥ sāvarṇyādiṣvanādiṣu
'O lady, why is it that, even among children who are equally your own, you show greater affection toward Savarni and the others, and not so much toward the others?'
Verse 109 (skanda.4.17.109)
nācacakṣe yadāsā'tha bhāsvate paripṛcchate tadātmānaṁ samādhāya sojñāsītsarvameva hi
When she gave no answer to the radiant Surya's repeated questioning, he then, composing his mind in meditation, came to know everything.
Verse 110 (skanda.4.17.110)
tato bhagavate śaptumudyate sā śaśaṁsa ha yathāvṛttaṁ tathā tathyaṁ tutoṣa bhagavānapi
Then, as the illustrious one was about to curse her, she confessed the whole matter truly, just as it had happened; and the illustrious one too was satisfied.
Verse 111 (skanda.4.17.111)
tathyabhāṣaṇatastāṁ tu ravirjñātvā nirāgasam na śaśāpa ca saṁkruddho yayau ca tvaṣṭuraṁtikam
Knowing her, through her truthful speech, to be free of fault, Surya, though enraged, did not curse her, and went to the presence of Tvashtri.
Verse 112 (skanda.4.17.112)
tvaṣṭāpi ca yathānyāyaṁ sānvayaṁ tigmatejasam nirdagdhukāmaṁ kopena prāgānarca mudā tadā vijñāya tadabhiprāyaṁ tvaṣṭovācā'śu taṁ ravim
Tvashtri too, in due honor, worshipped with joy that fiercely radiant one -- who, together with his retinue, had come wishing in his anger to burn him up -- and, understanding his intent, Tvashtri quickly spoke to Surya:
Verse 113 (skanda.4.17.113)

anenasaṁ sa vijñāya tāṁ tvāṣṭrīmaśvarūpiṇīm saharirharirūpeṇa mukhena samabhāvayad

śrutvā'dhyāyamimaṁ puṇyaṁ grahapīḍā na jāyate nopasargabhayaṁ tasya kāśyāṁ nivasataḥ sataḥ
