The Thousand Names of the Ganga

Chapter 28All chaptersChapter 30

Verse 1 (skanda.4.29.1)

agastya uvāca vinā snānena gaṁgāyā nṛṇāṁ janmaniratharkam upāyāṁtaramastyanyadyena snānaphalaṁ labhet

Agastya said: O Six-Faced One, without bathing in the Ganga, the birth of men is meaningless. Is there some other means by which one might obtain the fruit of that bathing?

Verse 2 (skanda.4.29.2)

aśaktānāṁ ca paṁgūnāmālasyopahatātmanām dūradeśāṁtarasthānāṁ gaṁgāsnānaṁ kathaṁ bhavet

For the incapable, the lame, those whose minds are overcome by sloth, and those who dwell in far-off, distant lands — how can bathing in the Ganga be possible for them?

Verse 3 (skanda.4.29.3)

dānaṁ vā'tha vrataṁvā'tha maṁtraḥstotrajapo'thavā tīrthāṁtarābhiṣeko vā devatopāsanaṁ tu vā

Is there, then, a gift, or a vow, or the japa of a mantra or hymn, or bathing in some other tirtha, or the worship of a deity, that might serve in its place?

Verse 4 (skanda.4.29.4)

yadyastikiṁcitṣaḍvaktra gaṁgāsnānaphalapradam vidhānāṁtaramātreṇa tadvada praṇatāya me

O Six-Faced One, if there is anything at all — by some other rite — that bestows the fruit of bathing in the Ganga, tell it to me, who bow before you.

Verse 5 (skanda.4.29.5)

tvatto na vedaskaṁdānyo gaṁgāgarbha samudbhava paraṁ svargataraṁgiṇyā mahimānaṁ mahāmate

O great-minded Skanda, born from the very womb of the Ganga, none but you knows the supreme greatness of that celestial river.

Verse 6 (skanda.4.29.6)

skaṁda uvāca saṁti puṇyajalānīha sarāṁsi sarito mune sthāne sthāne ca tīrthāni jitātmādhyuṣitāni ca

Skanda said: O sage, in this world there exist, place after place, lakes and rivers of holy water, and tirthas inhabited by those of subdued senses.

Verse 7 (skanda.4.29.7)

dṛṣṭapratyayakārīṇi mahāmahima bhāṁjyapi paraṁ svargataraṁgiṇyāḥ koṭyaṁśopi na tatra vai

They inspire faith at the very sight of them, and possess great glory — yet not even a ten-millionth part of that belongs to them, compared with the celestial river.

Verse 8 (skanda.4.29.8)

anenaivānumānena buddhyasva kalaśodbhava dadhre gaṁgottamāṁgena devadevena śaṁbhunā

By this very reasoning, understand, O Kalashodbhava — that Shambhu, the God of gods, bore the Ganga upon his own head.

Verse 9 (skanda.4.29.9)

snānakāle'nya tīrtheṣu japyate jāhnavī janaiḥ vinā viṣṇupadīṁ kvānyatsamarthamaghamocane

At the time of bathing even in other tirthas, people invoke the name of the Jahnavi. Apart from the Vishnupadi, what else has the power to release one from sin?

Verse 10 (skanda.4.29.10)

gaṁgāsnānaphalaṁ brahmangaṁgāyāmeva labhyate yathā drākṣāphalasvādo drākṣāyāmeva nānyataḥ astyupāya iha tvekaḥ syādyenāvikalaṁ phalam snānasya devasarito mahāguhyatamo mune

O brahmin, the fruit of bathing in the Ganga is obtained only in the Ganga herself, just as the taste of the grape is found only in the grape and nowhere else. Yet, O sage, there is here one means by which the complete fruit of bathing in the celestial river may be obtained — a very great secret indeed.

Verse 11 (skanda.4.29.11)

śivabhaktāya śāṁtāya viṣṇubhaktiparāya ca śraddhālave tvāstikāya garbhavāsamupukṣave

It is fit to be told only to one devoted to Shiva, tranquil, intent on devotion to Vishnu, full of faith, of firm belief, and desirous of freedom from dwelling again in the womb.

Verse 12 (skanda.4.29.12)

It should not be told to anyone else, anywhere, by anyone. This supreme secret destroys the greatest of sins.

Verse 13 (skanda.4.29.13)

It brings about the highest good, is meritorious, the supreme fulfiller of desires, the wellspring of love for the celestial river, and a perpetual source of Shiva's contentment.

Verse 14 (skanda.4.29.14)

Recited with faith, it grants the desired fruit and brings abundance in all four aims of life. O sage, even a single recitation of its japa earns the fruit of one whole sacrifice. Whatever fruit is declared for one who has bathed in every tirtha and been initiated into every sacrifice, that same fruit is gained by reciting it three times a day.

Verse 155 (skanda.4.29.155)

Whoever recites it at the time of bathing, in any body of water at all — there, O sage, the Ganga who flows through three worlds surely becomes present.

Verse 157 (skanda.4.29.157)

śreyorthī labhate śreyo dhanārthī labhate dhanam kāmī kāmānavāpnoti mokṣārthī mokṣamāpnuyāt

One who seeks the highest good obtains that good; one who seeks wealth obtains wealth; one who desires pleasure obtains it; and one who seeks liberation attains liberation.

Verse 158 (skanda.4.29.158)

varṣaṁ trikālapaṭhanācchraddhayā śucimānasaḥ ṛtukālābhigamanādaputraḥ putravānbhavet

By reciting it three times daily for a full year, with faith and a pure mind, and by approaching his wife in her fertile season, even a childless man becomes blessed with a son.

Verse 160 (skanda.4.29.160)

Even sin rightly accumulated over a thousand past births is destroyed through the recitation of the thousand names of Ganga. O sage — the slayer of a brahmin, the drinker of liquor, the thief of gold, the violator of his teacher's bed, one who keeps company with such a person, the destroyer of an unborn child, the slayer of mother or father —

Verse 164 (skanda.4.29.164)

Whatever merit the finest of men earns by serving his guru for a lifetime, one who recites this hymn three times a day for a year obtains that same merit. Whatever merit is gained by a complete recitation of the Veda is obtained in just six months by reciting this thrice daily.

Verse 173 (skanda.4.29.173)

tasmiṁstṛpte bhavettṛptā jāhnavī nātra saṁśayaḥ tasmātsarvaprayatnena gaṁgābhaktaṁ samarcayet

When such a devotee is satisfied, the Jahnavi herself is satisfied — of this there is no doubt. Therefore, one should, with every effort, honor a devotee of Ganga.

Verse 178 (skanda.4.29.178)

mucyate trividhaiḥ pāpairmanovākkāya saṁbhavaiḥ kṣaṇānniṣpāpatāmeti pitṝṇāṁ ca priyo bhavet

— such a one is freed from the threefold sin born of mind, speech, and body; in an instant he becomes sinless, and grows dear to his ancestors.

Verse 180 (skanda.4.29.180)

Verse 181 (skanda.4.29.181)

— adorned with divine ornaments and endowed with celestial pleasures, he roams freely, like a very child of the gods, through the groves of Nandana and beyond. Especially at the time of shraddha, while brahmins are partaking of the meal, reciting this great hymn brings satisfaction to the ancestors.

Verse 182 (skanda.4.29.182)

yāvaṁti tatra sikthāni yāvaṁtoṁ'bukaṇāḥ sthitāḥ tāvaṁtyeva hi varṣāṇi modaṁte svaḥ pitāmahāḥ

As many grains of rice and drops of water as are present in that offering — for that many years do the ancestors in heaven rejoice.

Verse 183 (skanda.4.29.183)

yathā prīṇaṁti pitaro gaṁgāyāṁ piṁḍadānataḥ tathaiva tṛpnuyuḥ śrāddhe stavasyāsyānusaṁśravāt

Just as the ancestors are gladdened by the offering of pindas in the Ganga, so too are they satisfied at a shraddha by the mere hearing of this hymn.

Verse 184 (skanda.4.29.184)

agaste kiṁbahūktena śṛṇu me niścitaṁ vacaḥ saṁśayo nātra kartavyaḥ saṁdigdheraphalaṁ nahi

O Agastya, what need is there of many words? Hear my settled word: no doubt should be entertained in this matter, for what is approached with doubt bears no fruit.

Verse 186 (skanda.4.29.186)

yāvaṁti martye stotrāṇi maṁtrajālānyanekaśaḥ tāvaṁti stavarājasya gāṁgeyasya samāni na

However many hymns and manifold clusters of mantras exist in this mortal world, not one of them equals this king of hymns to Ganga.

Verse 187 (skanda.4.29.187)

Verse 188 (skanda.4.29.188)

nityaṁ niyamavānetadyo japetstotramuttamam anyatrāpi vipannaḥ sa gaṁgātīre mṛto bhavet

Whoever, ever disciplined, recites this supreme hymn daily — even should he perish elsewhere, he is accounted as though he had died upon the very bank of the Ganga.

Verse 189 (skanda.4.29.189)

etatstotravaraṁ ramyaṁ purā proktaṁ pinākinā viṣṇave nijabhaktāya muktibījākṣarāspadam

This excellent and delightful hymn was of old declared by Pinaki, Shiva, to his own devotee Vishnu — a repository of syllables that are the very seed of liberation.

Verse 190 (skanda.4.29.190)

gaṁgāsnānapratinidhiḥ stotrametanmayeritam sisnāsurjāhnavīṁ tasmādetatstotraṁ japetsudhīḥ

This hymn, spoken by me, stands as a substitute for bathing in the Ganga. Therefore, let the wise, who desire to bathe in the Jahnavi, recite this hymn.
