Kashi Khanda · Chapter 49
Draupadaditya and Mayukhaditya
Verse 1 (skanda.4.49.1)
sūta uvāca pārāśaryamune vyāsa kumāraḥ kuṁbhajanmane yadāvadatkathāmetāṁ tadā kva drupadātmajā
Suta said: O sage Vyasa, son of Parashara, when Kumara told this tale to the jar-born Agastya, where then was Drupada's daughter, Draupadi?
Verse 2 (skanda.4.49.2)
vyāsa uvāca purāṇasaṁhitāṁ sūta brūte traikālikīṁ kathām saṁdeho nātra kartavyo yatastadgocarokhilam
Vyasa said: O Suta, the Purana-Samhita relates a story spanning all three times — past, present, and future; no doubt need be entertained here, for everything falls within its scope.
Verse 3 (skanda.4.49.3)
skaṁda uvāca ākarṇaya mune pūrvaṁ paṁcavaktro haraḥ svayam pṛthivyāṁ paṁcadhā bhūtvā prādurāsījjagaddhitaḥ
Skanda said: Listen, O sage. Long ago, the five-faced Hara himself became fivefold and appeared on earth for the good of the world.
Verse 4 (skanda.4.49.4)
umāpi ca jagaddhātrī drupadasya mahībhujaḥ yajato vahnikuṁḍācca prāduścakreti suṁdarī
And Uma too, sustainer of the world, appeared, in that beautiful form, from the sacrificial fire-pit of King Drupada.
Verse 5 (skanda.4.49.5)
paṁcāpi pāṁḍutanayāḥ sākṣādrudravapurdharāḥ avateruriha svargādduṣṭasaṁhārakārakāḥ
All five sons of Pandu, bearing within them the very form of Rudra, descended here from heaven to destroy the wicked.
Verse 6 (skanda.4.49.6)
nārāyaṇopi kṛṣṇatvaṁ prāpya tatsāhacaryakṛt udvṛttavṛttaśamanaḥ sadvṛttasthitikārakaḥ
Narayana too, taking on the form of Krishna, became their companion, subduing the unruly and upholding the way of the righteous.
Verse 7 (skanda.4.49.7)
pratapaṁtaḥ pṛthivyāṁ te pārthāśceruḥ pṛthakpṛthak udayānudayau tasminsaṁpadāṁ vipadāmapi
Those sons of Pritha moved across the earth, each shining brilliantly in his own way, experiencing by turns the rise and fall of both fortune and misfortune.
Verse 8 (skanda.4.49.8)
kadācitte mahāvīrā bhrātṛvyapratipāditām vipattimāpya mahatīṁ babhūvuḥ kānanaukasaḥ
Once, those great heroes, meeting with a great calamity brought about by their own rival kinsmen, became forest-dwellers.
Verse 9 (skanda.4.49.9)
pāṁcālyapi ca tatpatnī pativyasanatāpitā dharmajñā prāpya tanvaṁgī bradhnamārādhayadbhṛśam
And Panchali, their wife, that slender-bodied knower of dharma, tormented by her husbands' misfortune, worshipped the Sun with the deepest devotion.
Verse 10 (skanda.4.49.10)
ārādhitotha savitā tayā drupadakanyayā sadarvī sapidhānāṁ ca sthālikāmakṣayāṁ dadau uvāca ca prasannātmā bhāskaro drupadātmajām
Then the Sun, worshipped by Drupada's daughter, gave her an inexhaustible vessel, complete with ladle and lid; and Bhaskara, well pleased, spoke to Drupada's daughter —
Verse 11 (skanda.4.49.11)
ārādhayaṁtīṁ bhāvena sarvatra śucimānasām
— as she, ever pure of mind, worshipped him everywhere with true devotion.
Verse 12 (skanda.4.49.12)
sthālyaitayā mahābhāge yāvaṁto'nnārthino janāḥ tāvaṁtastṛptimāpsyaṁti yāvacca tvaṁ na bhokṣyase
[The Sun said:] "O most blessed one, by this vessel, however many people seek food shall find their fill — so long as you yourself have not yet eaten."
Verse 13 (skanda.4.49.13)
bhuktāyāṁ tvayi riktaiṣā pūrṇabhaktā bhavipyati rasavadvyaṁjananidhiricchābhakṣyapradāyinī
"Once you have eaten, this vessel becomes empty; but until then, it remains ever full, a treasury of savoury dishes, granting whatever food one desires."
Verse 14 (skanda.4.49.14)
itthaṁ varastayā labdhaḥ kāśyāmādityato mune aparaśca varo dattastasyai devena bhāsvatā
Thus, O sage, this boon was obtained by her from the Sun in Kashi; and the radiant god granted her yet another boon.
Verse 15 (skanda.4.49.15)
raviruvāca viśveśāddakṣiṇebhāge yo māṁ tvatpurataḥ sthitam ārādhayiṣyati naraḥ kṣudbādhā tasya naśyati
The Sun said: "Whatever man worships me, standing there before you in the southern quarter from Vishvesha, his hunger and its pains shall be destroyed."
Verse 16 (skanda.4.49.16)
anyaśca me varo datto viśveśena pativrate tapasā parituṣṭena taṁ niśāmaya vacmi te
"O faithful wife, another boon was granted to me by Vishvesha himself, pleased with my austerity; hear it now — I shall tell you."
Verse 17 (skanda.4.49.17)
prāgrave tvāṁ samārādhya yo māṁ drakṣyati mānavaḥ tasya tvaṁ duḥkhatimiramapānuda nijaiḥ karaiḥ
"Whatever man, having worshipped you at dawn, then beholds me — for him, drive away the darkness of sorrow with your own rays."
Verse 18 (skanda.4.49.18)
ato dharmāpriye nityaṁ prāpya viśveśvarādvaram kāśīsthitānāṁ jaṁtūnāṁ nāśayāmyaghasaṁcayam
"Therefore, O beloved of dharma, having received this boon forever from Vishveshvara, I shall destroy the accumulated sins of all creatures who dwell in Kashi."
Verse 19 (skanda.4.49.19)
ye māmatra bhajiṣyaṁti mānavāḥ śraddhayānvitāḥ tvadvarodyatapāṇiṁ ca teṣāṁ dāsyāmi ciṁtitam
"Whatever men, filled with faith, worship me here, their hands raised in seeking your own boon as well — to them I shall grant whatever they have set their hearts upon."
Verse 20 (skanda.4.49.20)
bhavatīṁ matsamīpasthāṁ yudhiṣṭhirapativratām viśveśāddakṣiṇebhāge daṁḍapāṇeḥ samīpataḥ yercayiṣyaṁti bhāvena puruṣā vāstriyopi vā teṣāṁ kadācinno bhāvi bhayaṁ priyaviyogajam
"Whoever, man or woman, worships you with devotion — you, Yudhishthira's faithful wife, stationed here beside me, in the southern quarter from Vishvesha, near Dandapani — for them shall never arise the fear born of parting from a loved one."
Verse 21 (skanda.4.49.21)
na vyādhijaṁ bhayaṁ kvāpi na kṣuttṛḍdoṣasaṁbhavam draupadīkṣaṇataḥ kāśyāṁ tava dharmapriyenaghe
"O sinless one, beloved of dharma, for whoever beholds you, Draupadi, in Kashi, there is nowhere any fear born of disease, nor any affliction arising from hunger and thirst."
Verse 22 (skanda.4.49.22)
iti dattvā varāndeva ādityaḥ sarvadaḥ satām śaṁbhumārādhayāmāsa dharmaṁ draupadyupāyayau
Thus, having granted these boons, the god Aditya, giver of all things to the virtuous, worshipped Shambhu; and Draupadi thereby attained righteousness.
Verse 23 (skanda.4.49.23)
ādityasya kathāmetāṁ draupadyārādhitasya vai yaḥ śroṣyati naro bhaktyā tasyainaḥ kṣayameṣyati
Whatever man hears this tale of the Sun worshipped by Draupadi with devotion — his sin shall be utterly destroyed.
Verse 24 (skanda.4.49.24)
skaṁda uvaca draupadādityamāhātmyaṁ saṁkṣepātkathitaṁ mayā mayūkhādityamāhātmyaṁ śṛṇvidānīṁ ghaṭodbhava -25 purā paṁcanade tīrthe triṣulokeṣu viśrute sahasraraśmirbhagavāṁstapastepe sudāruṇam
Skanda said: I have told you in brief the greatness of Draupadaditya; now hear, O Ghatodbhava, the greatness of Mayukhaditya. Long ago, at the sacred Panchanada, renowned throughout the three worlds, the thousand-rayed Lord Sun performed the most fierce austerity.
Verse 25 (skanda.4.49.25)
pratiṣṭhāpya mahāliṁgaṁ gabhastīśvara saṁjñitam gaurīṁ ca maṁgalā nāmnīṁ bhaktamaṁgaladāṁ sadā
He established a great linga, named Gabhastishvara, and worshipped Gauri under the name Mangala, ever the bestower of auspiciousness upon her devotees.
Verse 26 (skanda.4.49.26)
divyavarṣasahasraṁ tu śatena guṇitaṁ mune ārādhayañśivaṁ somaṁ somārdhakṛtaśekharam
O sage, for a hundred thousand divine years he worshipped Shiva, the gracious lord, who bears the crescent moon as his crown.
Verse 27 (skanda.4.49.27)
svarūpatastu tapanastrilokītāpanakṣamaḥ tatotitīvra tapasā jajvāla nitarāṁ mune
By his very nature the Sun is capable of scorching the three worlds; and now, through his own most intense austerity, he blazed forth still more fiercely, O sage.
Verse 28 (skanda.4.49.28)
mayūkhaistatra savitustrailokyadahanakṣamaiḥ tataṁ samastaṁ tatkāle dyāvābhūmyoryadaṁtaram vaimānikairviṣṇupade tatyaje ca gatāgatam tīvre pataṁgamahasi pataṁgatvabhayādiva
There, the whole expanse between heaven and earth grew filled with the rays of the Sun, rays capable of scorching all three worlds; and, in that fierce blaze, even the sky-travellers in Vishnu's realm gave up their comings and goings, as though fearing to be burnt up like moths in a flame.
Verse 29 (skanda.4.49.29)
mayūkhā eva dṛśyaṁte tiryagūrdhvamadhopi ca ādityasya na cādityo nīpapuṣpasthiteriva
Only the rays of the Sun could now be seen — sideways, above, and below — while the Sun itself remained unseen, like the stamens of a Nipa flower spreading everywhere without any visible centre.
Verse 30 (skanda.4.49.30)
tasyavai mahasāṁ rāśestaporāśestaporciṣām cakaṁpe sādhvasāttīvrā trailokyaṁ sacarācaram
At that mass of splendour, that store of austerity, those blazing flames of tapas, the whole three worlds, with everything moving and unmoving in them, trembled in the utmost terror.
Verse 31 (skanda.4.49.31)
[The gods thought:] "The Sun is proclaimed in the Vedas to be the very soul of this world; if he himself now becomes our destroyer, who then shall be our protector here?"
Verse 32 (skanda.4.49.32)
jagaccakṣurasau sūryo jagadātmaiṣa bhāskaraḥ jagadyoyanmṛtaprāyaṁ prātaḥprātaḥ prabodhayet
"This Sun is the very eye of the world; this Bhaskara is the very soul of the world, who every morning awakens the world that lies as if dead."
Verse 33 (skanda.4.49.33)
tamoṁdhakūpapatitamudyanneṣa dinedine prasārya paritaḥ pāṇīnprāṇijātaṁ samuddharet
"Rising day after day, this Sun extends his hands on every side, and lifts up all living creatures fallen into the blind well of darkness."
Verse 34 (skanda.4.49.34)
udite'trodimo nityamastaṁ yātyastamāpnumaḥ udaye'nudaye tasmādasmākaṁ kāraṇaṁ raviḥ
"When he rises here, we too rise every day; when he sets, we too come to our own setting. Thus the Sun is the very cause of both our rising and our decline."
Verse 35 (skanda.4.49.35)
iti vyākulitaṁ viśvaṁ paśyanviśveśvaraḥ svayam viśvatrātā varaṁ dātuṁ saṁjagme tigmaraśmaye
Seeing the universe thus thrown into turmoil, Vishveshvara himself, protector of the world, went in person to grant a boon to that sharp-rayed Sun.
Verse 36 (skanda.4.49.36)
mayūkhamālinaṁ śaṁbhurālokyāti suniścalam samādhi vismṛtātmānaṁ visismāya tapaḥ prati
Shambhu, beholding him garlanded with his own rays, utterly still, his very self forgotten in meditation, marvelled at his austerity.
Verse 37 (skanda.4.49.37)
uvāca ca prasannātmā śrīkaṁṭhaḥ praṇatārtihṛt alaṁ taptvā varaṁ brūhi dyumaṇe mahasāṁ nidhe niruddheṁdriyavṛttitvādbradhno dhyānasamādhinā na jagrāha vacaḥ śaṁbhordvitriruktopyakarṇavat
And Shrikantha, pleased in mind, remover of the anguish of the devoted, said: "Enough of this austerity — ask for a boon, O jewel of light, O treasury of splendour." But the Sun, his senses wholly suspended in the depth of his meditation, did not take in Shambhu's words even when spoken two or three times, as if he had no ears at all.
Verse 38 (skanda.4.49.38)
kāṣṭhībhūtaṁ tu taṁ jñātvā śivaḥ pasparśa pāṇinā mahātapaḥ samudbhūta saṁtāpāmṛtavarṣiṇā
Knowing him to have grown as rigid as wood, Shiva touched him with his own hand — a hand that rains nectar upon the very anguish born of such great austerity.
Verse 39 (skanda.4.49.39)
tata unmīlayāṁcakre locane viśvalocanaḥ tasyodayamiva prāpya prage paṁkajinīvanī
Then the "eye of the universe," the Sun, opened his own eyes — as a grove of lotuses opens at dawn upon the rising sun.
Verse 40 (skanda.4.49.40)
parivyapetasaṁtāpastapanaḥ sparśanādvibhoḥ avagrahitasasyaśrīrullalāsa yathāṁbudāt
His anguish wholly banished by the Lord's own touch, the Sun rejoiced, as a drought-stricken crop rejoices at the coming of a rain-cloud.
Verse 41 (skanda.4.49.41)
mitro netrātithīkṛtya tryakṣaṁ pratyakṣamagrataḥ daṁḍavatpraṇanāmoccaistuṣṭāva ca pinākinam
Mitra, welcoming the three-eyed Lord, now present in person, as a guest to his very eyes, bowed low like a fallen staff, and loudly praised Pinakin.
Verse 42 (skanda.4.49.42)
raviruvāca devadeva jagatāṁpate vibho bharga bhīma bhava caṁdrabhūṣaṇa bhūtanātha bhavabhītihāraka tvāṁ natosmi natavāṁchitaprada
The Sun said: "O God of gods, Lord of the worlds, O mighty one, O Bharga, O Bhima, O Bhava, O you crowned with the moon, O Lord of all beings, O dispeller of the terror of worldly existence — I bow to you, O granter of every wish of those who bow before you."
Verse 43 (skanda.4.49.43)
caṁdracūḍamṛḍa dhūrjaṭe hara tryakṣa dakṣa śatataṁtuśātana śāṁtaśāśvata śivāpate śiva tvāṁ natosmi natavāṁchitaprada
"O moon-crested one, O Mrida, O Dhurjati, O Hara, O three-eyed one, O destroyer of Daksha's hundred-threaded sacrifice, O tranquil, eternal one, O Lord of Shiva, O Shiva himself — I bow to you, O granter of every wish of those who bow."
Verse 44 (skanda.4.49.44)
nīlalohita samīhitārtha dahedvyekalocana virūpalocana vyomakeśapaśupāśanāśana tvāṁ natosmi natavāṁchitaprada
"O blue-red one, O granter of every desired end, O consumer of Kama with your single eye, O you of strange, wondrous eyes, O sky-haired one, O destroyer of the fettered soul's bonds — I bow to you, O granter of every wish of those who bow."
Verse 45 (skanda.4.49.45)
vāmadevaśitikaṁṭhaśūlabhṛccaṁdraśekhara phaṇīṁdrabhūṣaṇa kāmakṛtpaśupate maheśvara tvāṁ natosmi natavāṁchitaprada
"O Vamadeva, O dark-throated one, O bearer of the trident, O moon-crested one, O you adorned with the serpent-king, O fulfiller of desire, O Lord of creatures, O Maheshvara — I bow to you, O granter of every wish of those who bow."
Verse 46 (skanda.4.49.46)
tryaṁbaka tripurasūdaneśvara trāṇakṛttrinayanatrayīmaya kālakūṭa dalanāṁtakāṁtaka tvāṁ natosmi natavāṁchitaprada śarvarīrahitaśarvasarvagasvargamārgasukhadāpavargada aṁdhakāsuraripo kapardabhṛttvāṁ natosmi natavāṁchitaprada
"O Tryambaka, O Lord who slew Tripura, O protector, O three-eyed one, O embodiment of the three Vedas, O crusher of the Kalakuta poison, O vanquisher of Death itself — I bow to you, O granter of every wish of those who bow. O you untouched by darkness, O all-pervading Sharva, O giver of the joyous path to heaven and of final release, O foe of the demon Andhaka, O wearer of matted locks — I bow to you, O granter of every wish of those who bow."
Verse 47 (skanda.4.49.47)
śaṁkarogragirijāpate pate viśvanāthavidhiviṣṇu saṁstuta vedavedyaviditā'khileṁgi tatvāṁ natosmi natavāṁchitaprada
"O Shankara, O fierce one, O Lord of Girija, O Lord, O Vishvanatha, praised by Brahma and Vishnu alike, O you known through the Vedas, O you who pervade all that exists — I bow to you, O granter of every wish of those who bow."
Verse 48 (skanda.4.49.48)
viśvarūpapararūpa varjitabrahmajihmarahitāmṛtaprada vāṅamanoviṣayadūradūragatvāṁ natosmi natavāṁchitaprada
"O you of the form of the universe, and of the supreme form beyond it, O Brahman free of all deceit, O bestower of the nectar of immortality, O you who lie utterly beyond the reach of speech and mind — I bow to you, O granter of every wish of those who bow."
Verse 49 (skanda.4.49.49)
itthaṁ parītya mārtaṁḍo mṛḍaṁ devaṁ mṛḍānikām atha tuṣṭāva prītātmā śivavāmārdhahāriṇīm
Having thus circled the god Mrida in praise, Martanda, his heart glad, then went on to praise Mridani, she who occupies the left half of Shiva's own body.
Verse 50 (skanda.4.49.50)
raviruvāca devi tvadīyacaraṇāṁbujareṇugaurīṁ bhālasthalīṁ vahati yaḥ praṇatipravīṇaḥ janmāṁtarepi rajanīkaracārulekhā tāṁ gaurayatyatitarāṁ kila tasya puṁsaḥ
The Sun said: "O Goddess, whatever man, devoted in his reverence, bears upon his brow the golden dust of your lotus feet — for him, even in another birth, the lovely crescent of the moon shall grace his forehead with the greatest radiance."

śrīmaṁgale sakalamaṁgalajanmabhūme śrīmaṁgale sakalakalmaṣatūlavahne śrīmaṁgale sakaladānavadarpahaṁtri śrīmaṁgale'khilamidaṁ paripāhi viśvam
"O Shri Mangala, birthplace of all that is auspicious! O Shri Mangala, fire that consumes every heap of sin like cotton! O Shri Mangala, destroyer of the pride of every demon! O Shri Mangala, protect this entire universe!"
Verse 52 (skanda.4.49.52)

"O Vishveshvari, you are the creator of all the people of this world; you are their sustainer, and, at the time of dissolution, their destroyer too. The pure, shining river of merit that rises from the chanting of your very name sweeps away the trees of sin that stand along its banks."
Verse 53 (skanda.4.49.53)
mātarbhavāni bhavatī bhavatīvraduḥkhasaṁbhārahāriṇi śaraṇyamihāsti nānyā dhanyāsta eva bhuvaneṣu ta eva mānyā yeṣu sphurettavaśubhaḥ karuṇākaṭākṣaḥ
"O Mother Bhavani, you alone remove the crushing burden of worldly sorrow; there is no other refuge here at all. Blessed indeed, and honoured indeed, throughout all the worlds, are those upon whom your auspicious glance of compassion falls."
Verse 54 (skanda.4.49.54)
ye tvā smaraṁti satataṁ sahajaprakāśāṁ kāśīpurīsthitimatīṁ natamokṣalakṣmīm tānsaṁsmaretsmaraharo dhṛtaśuddhabuddhīnnirvāṇarakṣaṇavicakṣaṇapātrabhūtān
"Those who ceaselessly remember you — self-luminous, dwelling in the city of Kashi, the very Goddess of Liberation to whom all bow — them the Destroyer of Kama himself remembers in turn, their minds made pure, fit vessels skilled in the safeguarding of final liberation."
Verse 55 (skanda.4.49.55)

"O Mother, whoever holds your two pure feet within his heart — for him, the whole world lies, as it were, within his own grasp. O Mangala Gauri, from whoever's house daily draws near the splendour of your very name, the eight great powers never depart. O Goddess, you are the mother of the Vedas, the very form of Om; you are the Gayatri, and you are indeed the wish-granting cow of the twice-born. You are the threefold sacred utterance here, for the fulfilment of every rite; you are Svaha and Svadha, the very cause of the satisfaction of gods and ancestors alike."
Verse 56 (skanda.4.49.56)

"O Gauri, you alone dwell in the moon-crested one as his consort; in the Creator, you are Savitri; in the discus-bearing Vishnu, you are the lovely Lakshmi. In Kashi, O stainless one, you are the very Goddess of Liberation. O Mangala Gauri, O Mother, you alone are my refuge here."
Verse 57 (skanda.4.49.57)
stutveti tāṁ smaraharārdhaśarīraśobhāṁ śrīmaṁgalāṣṭaka mahāstavanena bhānuḥ devīṁ ca devamasakṛtparitaḥ praṇamya tūṣṇīṁ babhūva savitā śivayoḥ purastāt
Having thus praised her — the radiant beauty adorning half the body of Shiva, the Destroyer of Kama — with this great hymn of the eight Shri-Mangala verses, the Sun, bowing again and again on every side to both the Goddess and the God, fell silent before Shiva and Shivaa.
Verse 58 (skanda.4.49.58)
devadeva uvāca uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṁ te prasannosmi mahāmate mitramannetrago nityaṁ prapaśye taccarācaram
The God of gods said: "Rise, rise; blessings upon you. I am pleased with you, O great-minded one. O Mitra, ever coursing as my very eye, it is through you that I forever behold all that moves and all that is still."
Verse 59 (skanda.4.49.59)
mama mūrtirbhavānsūrya sarvajño bhava sarvagaḥ sarveṣāṁ mahasāṁ rāśiḥ sarveṣāṁ sarvakarmavit
"O Sun, you are my own very form; become all-knowing, all-pervading, the very treasury of all splendour, the knower of every deed of every being."
Verse 60 (skanda.4.49.60)
sarveṣāṁ sarvaduḥkhāni bhaktānāṁ tvaṁ nirākuru tvayā nāmnāṁ catuḥṣaṣṭyā yadaṣṭakamudīritam
"Remove every sorrow of every one of your devotees. This eightfold hymn of sixty-four names, which you have composed —"
Verse 61 (skanda.4.49.61)
anena māṁ pariṣṭutya naro madbhaktimāpsyati aṣṭakaṁ maṁgalāgauryā maṁgalāṣṭakasaṁjñakam
"— by reciting it in my praise, whatever man does so shall attain devotion to me; this hymn to Mangala Gauri shall become known as the Mangalashtaka."
Verse 62 (skanda.4.49.62)
anena maṁgalāgaurīṁ stutvā maṁgalamāpsyati catuḥṣaṣṭyaṣṭakaṁ stotraṁ maṁgalāṣṭakameva ca
"By this, whoever praises Mangala Gauri shall attain auspiciousness — both this hymn of sixty-four names, and this Mangalashtaka."
Verse 63 (skanda.4.49.63)
etatstotravaraṁ puṇyaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam dūradeśāṁtarasthopi japannityaṁ narottamaḥ
This excellent, meritorious hymn destroys every sin; even the best of men, dwelling far off in some distant land, reciting it daily —
Verse 64 (skanda.4.49.64)
trisaṁdhyaṁ pariśuddhātmā kāśīṁ prāpsyati durlabhām anena stotrayugmena japtena pratyahaṁ nṛbhiḥ dhruvadainaṁdinaṁ pāpaṁ kṣālitaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ na tasya dehino dehe jātu citkilbiṣasthitiḥ
— at the three daily junctures, his soul purified, attains the hard-won Kashi. By these two hymns, recited daily by men, their daily sin is, without doubt, washed away; never does any residue of sin remain in the body of such a man.
Verse 65 (skanda.4.49.65)
trikālaṁ yojayennityametatstotradvayaṁśubham kiṁjaptairbahubhiḥ stotraiścaṁcalaśrīpradairnṛṇām
One should ever recite this pair of auspicious hymns three times each day; what use, for men, is the recitation of many other hymns that grant only fickle, passing fortune?
Verse 66 (skanda.4.49.66)
etatstotradvayaṁ dadyātkāśyāṁ naiḥśreyasīṁ śriyam tasmātsarvaprayatnena mānavairmokṣakāṁkṣibhiḥ
This pair of hymns grants, in Kashi, the fortune of ultimate beatitude; therefore, men who long for liberation should, with every effort —
Verse 67 (skanda.4.49.67)
etatstotradvayaṁ japyaṁ tyaktvā stotrāṇyanekaśaḥ prapaṁca āvayoreva sarva eṣa carācaraḥ
— recite this pair of hymns alone, setting aside all others; for this entire moving and unmoving world is but the outspreading of the two of us alone.
Verse 68 (skanda.4.49.68)
tadāvayoḥstavādasmānniṣprapaṁco jano bhavet samṛddhimāpya mahatīṁ putrapautravatīmiha
By this very praise of the two of us, a person becomes free of worldly entanglement, having first attained here great prosperity, blessed with sons and grandsons.
Verse 69 (skanda.4.49.69)
aṁte nirvāṇamāpnoti japanstotramidaṁ naraḥ anyacca śṛṇu saptāśva graharāja divākara
A man who recites this hymn attains liberation at last. Hear something more besides, O seven-horsed one, O king of planets, O Divakara.
Verse 70 (skanda.4.49.70)
tvayā pratiṣṭhitaṁ liṁgaṁ gabhastīśvarasaṁjñitam sevitaṁ bhaktibhāvena sarvasiddhisamarpakam
The linga established by you, named Gabhastishvara, when served with devotion, grants every kind of accomplishment.
Verse 71 (skanda.4.49.71)
tvayā gabhastimālābhiścāṁpeyāṁbujakāṁtibhiḥ yadarcitvaiśvaraṁ liṁgaṁ sarvabhāvena bhāskara
O Bhaskara, that very linga of the Lord, which you have worshipped with your own whole heart, offering garlands of your own rays as radiant as golden lotuses —
Verse 72 (skanda.4.49.72)
gabhastīśvara ityākhyāṁ tato liṁgamavāpsyati arcayitvā gabhastīśaṁ snātvā paṁcanade naraḥ
— that linga shall thenceforth bear the name Gabhastishvara. Whatever man, having bathed at Panchanada, worships Gabhastisha —
Verse 73 (skanda.4.49.73)
na jātu jāyate māturjaṭhare dhūtakalmaṣaḥ imāṁ ca maṁgalāgaurīṁ nārī vā puruṣopi vā caitraśuklatṛtīyāyāmupoṣaṇaparāyaṇaḥ mahopacāraiḥ saṁpūjya dukūlābharaṇādibhiḥ
— his sins washed away, is never born again in a mother's womb. And whatever woman or man, keeping a fast on the third day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, worships this Mangala Gauri with grand offerings — fine cloth, ornaments, and the rest —
Verse 74 (skanda.4.49.74)
rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā gītanṛtyakathādibhiḥ prātaḥ kumārīḥ saṁpūjya dvādaśācchādanādibhiḥ
— keeping vigil through the night with song, dance, and story, and in the morning worshipping twelve young girls with clothing and gifts —
Verse 75 (skanda.4.49.75)
saṁbhojyaparamānnādyairdattvānyebhyopi dakṣiṇām homaṁ kṛtvā vidhānena jātavedasa ityṛcā
— feeding them the finest food, giving offerings to others as well, and performing the fire-rite according to due form with the "Jatavedase" verse —
Verse 76 (skanda.4.49.76)
aṣṭottaraśatābhiśca tilājyāhutibhiḥ prage ekaṁ gomithunaṁ dattvā brāhmaṇāya kuṭuṁbine
— offering one hundred and eight oblations of sesame and ghee at dawn, and giving a pair of cattle to a family-man Brahmin —
Verse 77 (skanda.4.49.77)
śraddhayā samalaṁkṛtya bhūṣaṇairdvijadaṁpatī bhojayitvā mahārhānnaiḥ prīyetāṁ maṁgaleśvarau
— and, with reverence, adorning a Brahmin couple with ornaments and feeding them the finest food — by all this, Mangaleshvara and his consort are well pleased.
Verse 78 (skanda.4.49.78)
iti maṁtraṁ samuccārya prātaḥ kṛtvātha pāraṇam na durbhagatvamāpnoti na dāridryaṁ kadācana
Reciting this mantra, and breaking the fast the next morning, one never falls into misfortune, nor ever into poverty.
Verse 79 (skanda.4.49.79)
na vai saṁtānavicchittiṁ bhogocchittiṁ na jātucit strī vaidhavyaṁ na cāpnoti na nāyoṣidviyogabhāk
One never suffers the loss of children, nor the loss of one's enjoyments; a woman never becomes a widow, nor is any woman ever parted from her husband.
Verse 80 (skanda.4.49.80)
pāpāni vilayaṁ yāṁti puṇyarāśiśca labhyate api vaṁdhyā prasūyeta kṛtvaitanmaṁgalāvratam
Sins are utterly destroyed, and a treasury of merit is gained; even a barren woman gives birth to a child, simply by performing this vow of Mangala.
Verse 81 (skanda.4.49.81)
etadvratasya karaṇātkurūpatvaṁ na jātucit kumārī viṁdatetyaṁtaṁ guṇarūpayutaṁ patim
By performing this vow, one never becomes deformed; an unmarried girl obtains, in the end, a husband endowed with virtue and beauty alike.
Verse 82 (skanda.4.49.82)
kumāropi vrataṁ kṛtvā viṁdati striyamuttamām saṁti vratāni bahuśo dhanakāmapradāni ca nāpnuyurjātucittāni maṁgalāvratatulyatām kartavyā cābdikī yātrā madhau tasyāṁ tithau naraiḥ
A young man too, performing this vow, obtains an excellent wife. There are many vows that grant wealth and fulfil desires, but none of them can ever equal this vow of Mangala. Men should undertake the yearly pilgrimage in the month of Madhu, on that same tithi.
Verse 83 (skanda.4.49.83)
sarvavighnapraśāṁtyarthaṁ sadā kāśīnivāsibhiḥ aparaṁ dyumaṇe vacmi tava cātra tapasyataḥ
— this pilgrimage should ever be undertaken by the residents of Kashi, for the quelling of every obstacle. O jewel of light, let me tell you one thing more, concerning your own austerity here.
Verse 84 (skanda.4.49.84)
mayūkhā eva khe dṛṣṭā na ca dṛṣṭaṁ kalevaram mayūkhāditya ityākhyā tataste ditinaṁdana
Since only your rays were seen in the sky, and your own form remained unseen, henceforth your name shall be Mayukhaditya.
Verse 85 (skanda.4.49.85)
tvadarcanānnṛṇāṁ kaścinna vyādhiḥ prabhaviṣyati bhaviṣyati na dāridryaṁ ravivāre tvadīkṣaṇāt
Through your worship, no disease at all shall prevail over men; and through beholding you on a Sunday, no poverty shall ever arise.
Verse 86 (skanda.4.49.86)
itthaṁ mayūkhādityasya śivo dattvā bahūnvarān tatraivāṁtarhito bhūto ravistatraiva tasthivān
Thus, having granted Mayukhaditya many boons, Shiva vanished right there; and the Sun remained there in that very place.
Verse 87 (skanda.4.49.87)
śrutvākhyānamidaṁ puṇyaṁ mayūkhādityasaṁśrayam draupadādityasahitaṁ naro na nirayaṁ vrajet
Whoever hears this meritorious tale, concerning Mayukhaditya together with Draupadaditya, shall never go to hell.
