||skaṁda uvāca|| śṛṇu vātāpi saṁhartaḥ kāśyāṁ pātakataṁkinī || padmakalpe tu yā vṛttā damanasya dvijanmanaḥ

Skanda said: Listen, O destroyer of Vatapi, to the tale that destroys sin, of what happened in Kashi in the Padma-kalpa, concerning Damana, twice-born.

Verse 2 (skanda.4.74.2)

bhāradvājasya tanayo damano nāma nāmataḥ || kṛtamauṁjīvidhiḥ sotha vidyājātaṁ pragṛhya ca

pratitīrthaṁ pratinadi sa babhrāma tapoyutaḥ || yāvaṁtyāyatanānīha tiṣṭhaṁti parito bhuvam

— from sacred ford to sacred ford, from river to river, engaged in austerity; whatever sacred abodes exist all around the earth —

And Damana too, the righteous soul, together with the teacher Garga, having worshipped the glorious Omkara, merged into that very linga.

Verse 118 (skanda.4.74.118)

||skaṁda uvāca|| ilvalāre paraṁ sthānamoṁkāramavimuktake || tatra siddhiparāṁ jagmuḥ sādhakā bahuśo mune

Skanda said: O foe of Ilvala, Omkara is the supreme place in Avimukta; there, O sage, many seekers have attained supreme accomplishment.

Verse 119 (skanda.4.74.119)

kalau kaluṣacittānāṁ puro nākhyeyameva hi || praṇaveśvaramāhātmyaṁ nāstikānāṁ viśeṣataḥ

In the Kali age, this greatness of Pranaveshvara should never at all be revealed before those of impure mind, especially before atheists.

Verse 120 (skanda.4.74.120)

ye niṁdaṁti mahādevaṁ kṣetraṁ niṁdaṁti ye'dhiyaḥ || purāṇaṁ ye ca niṁdaṁti te saṁbhāṣyā na kutracit

Those who revile Mahadeva, those foolish ones who revile the sacred field, and those who revile the Puranas — they are not to be conversed with, anywhere.

Verse 121 (skanda.4.74.121)

oṁkārasadṛśaṁ liṁgaṁ na kvacijjagatītale || iti gauryai samākhyātaṁ devadevena niścitam

There is no linga equal to Omkara anywhere on this earth — this was certainly declared to Gauri by the god of gods.

Verse 122 (skanda.4.74.122)

imamadhyāyamākarṇya narastadgatamānasaḥ || vimuktaḥ sarvapāpebhyaḥ śivalokamavāpnuyāt

A man who hears this chapter, his mind fixed upon it, freed from all sins, attains the world of Shiva.
