The Glory of Kutumbikeshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.5.10.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। अथातः संप्रवक्ष्यामि तीर्थ त्रैलोक्य विश्रुतम्। स्वयंभूतं महेशस्य विख्यातं कुटुंबिकेश्वरम्

sanatkumāra uvāca| athātaḥ saṁpravakṣyāmi tīrtha trailokya viśrutam| svayaṁbhūtaṁ maheśasya vikhyātaṁ kuṭuṁbikeśvaram

Sanatkumara said: Now hereafter I shall declare the tirtha renowned throughout the three worlds: Mahesha's self-manifest and celebrated Kutumbikeshvara.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.10.2)

मुच्यते सर्वपापैस्तु सप्तजन्मकृतैरपि। शुचिः पश्यति यो देवं कृत्वा श्राद्धं यथा विधि

mucyate sarvapāpaistu saptajanmakṛtairapi| śuciḥ paśyati yo devaṁ kṛtvā śrāddhaṁ yathā vidhi

He is freed from all sins, even those committed over seven births; the pure one who beholds that god, having performed the ancestral rite according to rule...

Verse 3 (skanda.5.10.3)

सर्वाँल्लोकानतिक्रम्य शिवलोकं स गच्छति। यस्तु सर्वाणि शाकानि कन्दानि विविधानि च

sarvām̐llokānatikramya śivalokaṁ sa gacchati| yastu sarvāṇi śākāni kandāni vividhāni ca

...having transcended all the worlds, goes to the world of Shiva. And whoever offers every kind of vegetable and various roots...

Verse 4 (skanda.5.10.4)

तीरे तस्य प्रयच्छेत स प्राप्नोति परां गतिम्। पौषे प्रतिपदि सिते अष्टम्यां वा समाहितः

tīre tasya prayaccheta sa prāpnoti parāṁ gatim| pauṣe pratipadi site aṣṭamyāṁ vā samāhitaḥ

...upon its bank attains the supreme destination. Composed of mind, on the first day of the bright fortnight of Pausha, or on the eighth day...

Verse 5 (skanda.5.10.5)

एकेनैवोपवासेन अश्वमेधफलं लभेत्। आश्विन्यां पौर्णमास्यां च शुचिः पश्यति मानवः

ekenaivopavāsena aśvamedhaphalaṁ labhet| āśvinyāṁ paurṇamāsyāṁ ca śuciḥ paśyati mānavaḥ

...by a single fast alone he obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice. On the full moon of Ashvina, the pure man who beholds the deity...

Verse 6 (skanda.5.10.6)

पट्टबंधं महेशस्य स विपाप्मा दिवं व्रजेत्। चैत्रे मासि सिते पक्षे पञ्चम्यां समुपोषितः

paṭṭabaṁdhaṁ maheśasya sa vipāpmā divaṁ vrajet| caitre māsi site pakṣe pañcamyāṁ samupoṣitaḥ

...receives the crown-binding of Mahesha, and, freed from sin, goes to heaven. In the month of Chaitra, in the bright fortnight, on the fifth day, having fasted...

Verse 7 (skanda.5.10.7)

कर्पूरं कुङ्कुमं चैव मृगनाभि सचन्दनम्। निवेदयति देवाय नैवेद्यं घृतपायसम्

karpūraṁ kuṅkumaṁ caiva mṛganābhi sacandanam| nivedayati devāya naivedyaṁ ghṛtapāyasam

...offering camphor, saffron, musk together with sandalwood, and an offering of ghee and rice-pudding to the god...

Verse 8 (skanda.5.10.8)

स्वरूपं चैव विप्रेन्द्र सभार्यं भोजयेद्द्विजम्। रुद्रलोकमवाप्नोति यावदिंद्राश्चतुर्दश

svarūpaṁ caiva viprendra sabhāryaṁ bhojayeddvijam| rudralokamavāpnoti yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

O foremost of Brahmins, one should feed a Brahmin like himself, together with his wife; thereby a man attains the world of Rudra for as long as fourteen Indras reign.
