The Glory of Pattaneshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.5.103.1)
ईश्वर उवाच। त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्यातं द्वात्रिंशत्तममुत्तमम्। विद्धि सिद्धिप्रदं पुंसां पत्तनेश्वरमीश्वरम्
īśvara uvāca| triṣu lokeṣu vikhyātaṁ dvātriṁśattamamuttamam| viddhi siddhipradaṁ puṁsāṁ pattaneśvaramīśvaram
Ishvara said: Know the thirty-second, supreme, and renowned-in-the-three-worlds Lord Pattaneshvara, who bestows accomplishment on men.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.103.2)
पुराऽहं पर्वते देवि मंदरे चारुकन्दर्। क्रीडन्सार्द्धं त्वया पृष्टः कदाचिद्रहसि स्थितः
purā'haṁ parvate devi maṁdare cārukandar| krīḍansārddhaṁ tvayā pṛṣṭaḥ kadācidrahasi sthitaḥ
Long ago, O Devi, on Mount Mandara, in a lovely cave, while sporting together with you, being once in a secluded place, you asked me:
Verse 3 (skanda.5.103.3)
किमर्थं पर्वतं त्यक्त्वा कैलासं रमणीयकम्। मुक्ता फलशिलाशुभ्रं शङ्खचन्द्रांशुनिर्मलम्
kimarthaṁ parvataṁ tyaktvā kailāsaṁ ramaṇīyakam| muktā phalaśilāśubhraṁ śaṅkhacandrāṁśunirmalam
'Why, having left the delightful mountain Kailasa — bright as pearl-stone, pure as the rays of the conch and moon,'
Verse 4 (skanda.5.103.4)
सिद्धचारणगन्धर्वकिंनरोद्गीतनादितम्। सदा पुष्पद्रुमच्छन्नं कदलीवनराजितम्
siddhacāraṇagandharvakiṁnarodgītanāditam| sadā puṣpadrumacchannaṁ kadalīvanarājitam
'resounding with the songs of Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas, and Kinnaras, ever covered with flowering trees, adorned with groves of plantain,'
Verse 5 (skanda.5.103.5)
अथ कोकिलचक्राह्वचकोरकुरराकुलम्। पुऽण्यलोकोपमं स्थानं त्रिविष्टपविभूषणम्
atha kokilacakrāhvacakorakurarākulam| pu'ṇyalokopamaṁ sthānaṁ triviṣṭapavibhūṣaṇam
'thronging with cuckoos, chakravaka birds, chakoras, and ospreys — a place resembling the world of the virtuous, the very ornament of heaven —'
Verse 6 (skanda.5.103.6)
महाकालवने शून्ये नानागुल्मलतावृते। गजेंद्रगजशार्दूल सिंहशम्बरसंकुले
mahākālavane śūnye nānāgulmalatāvṛte| gajeṁdragajaśārdūla siṁhaśambarasaṁkule
'why have you dwelt in the desolate Mahakalavana forest, overgrown with various shrubs and creepers, crowded with lordly elephants, tigers, lions, and sambar deer,'
Verse 7 (skanda.5.103.7)
ऋक्षवानरगोमायुजन्तुकादिविराजिते। मयूरसर्पमार्जारमूषिकादिविराजिते
ṛkṣavānaragomāyujantukādivirājite| mayūrasarpamārjāramūṣikādivirājite
'teeming with bears, monkeys, jackals and such creatures, and filled with peacocks, snakes, cats, mice, and the like —'
Verse 8 (skanda.5.103.8)
कथं वासः कृतो देव कौतूहलमिदं मम
kathaṁ vāsaḥ kṛto deva kautūhalamidaṁ mama
'how, O Lord, have you made your dwelling there? This is my curiosity.'
Verse 9 (skanda.5.103.9)
इति पृष्टस्त्वया देवि मंदरे चारुकन्दरे। मया प्रोक्तं प्रसन्नेन पत्तनं च मम प्रिये
iti pṛṣṭastvayā devi maṁdare cārukandare| mayā proktaṁ prasannena pattanaṁ ca mama priye
Thus questioned by you, O Devi, in that lovely cave of Mandara, I, being pleased, told you, O beloved, of my city (Pattana):
Verse 10 (skanda.5.103.10)
महाकालवनं रम्यं स्वर्गात्सुखकरं परम् ।।.। स्मशानपीठसत्क्षेत्रवनोपरसमाश्रितम्
mahākālavanaṁ ramyaṁ svargātsukhakaraṁ param ||.| smaśānapīṭhasatkṣetravanoparasamāśritam
'The delightful Mahakalavana is more blissful than heaven itself; it rests upon the cremation-ground seat, the sacred field, and the forest and hills.'
Verse 11 (skanda.5.103.11)
अनौपम्यगुणं विद्धि पत्तनं पर्वतात्मजे। एवं पत्तनदेवो वै न दृष्टो भुवनत्रये। गीतवादित्रचातुर्यैः स्पर्द्धते यः सुरालयम्
anaupamyaguṇaṁ viddhi pattanaṁ parvatātmaje| evaṁ pattanadevo vai na dṛṣṭo bhuvanatraye| gītavāditracāturyaiḥ sparddhate yaḥ surālayam
'Know, O daughter of the mountain, that my city is of incomparable qualities — indeed, such a divine city has never been seen in the three worlds, one that rivals the abode of the gods in the skillful art of song and instrumental music.'
Verse 12 (skanda.5.103.12)
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवि देवर्षिर्नारदो मुनिः। द्रष्टुकामः समायातो मन्दरे मां यशस्विनि
etasminnaṁtare devi devarṣirnārado muniḥ| draṣṭukāmaḥ samāyāto mandare māṁ yaśasvini
Meanwhile, O renowned Devi, the divine sage Narada came, desiring to see me, on Mount Mandara.
Verse 13 (skanda.5.103.13)
विनोदार्थं मया पृष्टस्त्वत्प्रियार्थं कुतूहलात्। क्व त्वया गमितः कालः कल्पसंख्यो महामुने
vinodārthaṁ mayā pṛṣṭastvatpriyārthaṁ kutūhalāt| kva tvayā gamitaḥ kālaḥ kalpasaṁkhyo mahāmune
For your amusement, and out of curiosity, I asked him: 'O great sage, where have you spent time equal in measure to an eon?'
Verse 14 (skanda.5.103.14)
कस्मिन्नाश्रमसंस्थाने तपसः संचयः कृतः। तीर्थानि कानि भ्रांतानि क्व ते रतिरभूच्चिरम्
kasminnāśramasaṁsthāne tapasaḥ saṁcayaḥ kṛtaḥ| tīrthāni kāni bhrāṁtāni kva te ratirabhūcciram
'In what hermitage have you accumulated austerities? What sacred fords have you wandered to? Where has your delight long resided?'
Verse 15 (skanda.5.103.15)
कौतुकं दृष्टपूर्वं तु वद मे मुनिसत्तम। इति पृष्टो मया देवि ब्रह्मपुत्रो महामुनिः। कथयामास वृत्तांतं पत्तनस्य प्रयत्नतः
kautukaṁ dṛṣṭapūrvaṁ tu vada me munisattama| iti pṛṣṭo mayā devi brahmaputro mahāmuniḥ| kathayāmāsa vṛttāṁtaṁ pattanasya prayatnataḥ
'Tell me, O best of sages, of some wonder you have previously seen.' Thus questioned by me, O Devi, the great sage, son of Brahma, related in detail the account of Pattana:
Verse 16 (skanda.5.103.16)
बहूनि संपरिक्रम्य तीर्थान्यायतनानि च। पत्तनानि विचित्राणि देशाश्च नगराणि च
bahūni saṁparikramya tīrthānyāyatanāni ca| pattanāni vicitrāṇi deśāśca nagarāṇi ca
'Having wandered over many sacred fords and shrines, wondrous cities, countries, and towns,'
Verse 17 (skanda.5.103.17)
अटनार्थं महादेव जंबूद्वीपे मनोरमे। दृष्टः पत्तनराजश्च सदानंदकरः परः
aṭanārthaṁ mahādeva jaṁbūdvīpe manorame| dṛṣṭaḥ pattanarājaśca sadānaṁdakaraḥ paraḥ
'for the sake of roaming, O great god, in the lovely Jambudvipa, I beheld the king of cities, the supreme bestower of everlasting bliss —'
Verse 18 (skanda.5.103.18)
स्वेच्छाकल्पितविन्यासः प्रासादशतकल्पितः। इच्छाकामफलावाप्तिर निर्देश्यसुखावहः
svecchākalpitavinyāsaḥ prāsādaśatakalpitaḥ| icchākāmaphalāvāptira nirdeśyasukhāvahaḥ
'laid out according to its own will, adorned with a hundred palaces, granting the fruit of every desired wish, bringing indescribable happiness,'
Verse 19 (skanda.5.103.19)
सर्वर्तुकुसुमामोदसुखस्पर्शानिलावृतः। वीणावेणुरवैर्घुष्टो मनःप्रह्लादकारकः
sarvartukusumāmodasukhasparśānilāvṛtaḥ| vīṇāveṇuravairghuṣṭo manaḥprahlādakārakaḥ
'enveloped by breezes pleasant to the touch and fragrant with the blossoms of every season, resounding with the notes of vina and flute, delighting the mind,'
Verse 20 (skanda.5.103.20)
वज्रेंद्रनीलवैडूर्यचन्द्रकांतादिदी पितः। जरामृत्युभयोपेतः सर्वव्याधिविवर्जितः
vajreṁdranīlavaiḍūryacandrakāṁtādidī pitaḥ| jarāmṛtyubhayopetaḥ sarvavyādhivivarjitaḥ
'radiant with diamond, sapphire, cat's-eye, moonstone, and the like — freeing one from the fear of old age and death, and devoid of every disease,'
Verse 21 (skanda.5.103.21)
शक्राग्नियमरक्षोब्धिवायुसोमेशसेवितः। ऊर्द्धाधः सप्तलोकेषु पुण्येषु निवसंति हि
śakrāgniyamarakṣobdhivāyusomeśasevitaḥ| ūrddhādhaḥ saptalokeṣu puṇyeṣu nivasaṁti hi
'attended by Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirriti, Varuna, Vayu, and Soma — indeed they dwell in the seven meritorious worlds above and below.'
Verse 22 (skanda.5.103.22)
सदा प्रमुदिता देवास्तेऽपि कांक्षंति पत्तनन्न्। तत्र शांता महात्मानो निवसंते महेश्वर
sadā pramuditā devāste'pi kāṁkṣaṁti pattanann| tatra śāṁtā mahātmāno nivasaṁte maheśvara
'The gods, ever joyful, likewise long for this city; there, O Maheshvara, dwell great, peaceful souls.'
Verse 23 (skanda.5.103.23)
विद्योतितदिशो दांताः सूर्य वैश्वानरप्रभाः। दिव्यांबरधरा धीरा जगमुकुटधारिणः
vidyotitadiśo dāṁtāḥ sūrya vaiśvānaraprabhāḥ| divyāṁbaradharā dhīrā jagamukuṭadhāriṇaḥ
'Its inhabitants, self-controlled, illumine the quarters with a radiance like the sun and fire; wearing divine garments, resolute, crowned as the very diadem of the world.'
Verse 24 (skanda.5.103.24)
विप्रा माहेश्वराः पुण्याः क्षत्रिया हरतत्पराः। मुमुक्षवस्तपोनिष्ठा वैश्या शूद्राश्चिरायुपः
viprā māheśvarāḥ puṇyāḥ kṣatriyā haratatparāḥ| mumukṣavastaponiṣṭhā vaiśyā śūdrāścirāyupaḥ
'Its Brahmins are devotees of Maheshvara and holy; its Kshatriyas are devoted to Hara; the people are seekers of liberation, steadfast in austerity; its Vaishyas and Shudras are long-lived.'
Verse 25 (skanda.5.103.25)
स शुभ्ररूपः स च लोहिताकृतिः स चापि पीतः ससितेतरः क्वचित्। स नामधेयः स च नामवर्ज्यः सोऽदृ श्यरूपः स च दृष्टरूपः
sa śubhrarūpaḥ sa ca lohitākṛtiḥ sa cāpi pītaḥ sasitetaraḥ kvacit| sa nāmadheyaḥ sa ca nāmavarjyaḥ so'dṛ śyarūpaḥ sa ca dṛṣṭarūpaḥ
'He is of white form, and also of red form, and also yellow, and elsewhere dark; he bears a name, and yet is beyond all naming; he is of invisible form, and also of visible form.'
Verse 26 (skanda.5.103.26)
क्वचिद्रविसहस्राक्षः क्वचिदेकरविप्रभः। क्वचिच्चन्द्राद्विशिष्येत क्वचिदंगुलिकांतिमान्
kvacidravisahasrākṣaḥ kvacidekaraviprabhaḥ| kvaciccandrādviśiṣyeta kvacidaṁgulikāṁtimān
'Somewhere he has the brilliance of a thousand suns, somewhere the splendor of a single sun; somewhere he surpasses the moon, somewhere he shines with the radiance of a mere fingertip.'
Verse 27 (skanda.5.103.27)
जन्म मृत्युजरारोगैर्दुःखानि विविधानि च। प्रयाति विलयं तानि प्रसन्ने पत्तनेश्वरे
janma mṛtyujarārogairduḥkhāni vividhāni ca| prayāti vilayaṁ tāni prasanne pattaneśvare
When Pattaneshvara is pleased, all the varied sorrows born of birth, death, old age, and disease pass away into dissolution.
Verse 28 (skanda.5.103.28)
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। पत्तनेशस्य देवस्य आनंदेशमतः शृणु
eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| pattaneśasya devasya ānaṁdeśamataḥ śṛṇu
This sin-destroying glory of the god Pattanesha has thus been told to you, O Devi; now hear of Anandesha.
