Verse 1 (skanda.5.106.1)

श्रीमहादेव उवाच। पञ्चत्रिंशत्तमं देवि इन्द्रेश्वरमनुत्तमम्। महासिद्धिप्रदं देवि ब्रह्महत्याविनाशनम्॥

śrīmahādeva uvāca| pañcatriṁśattamaṁ devi indreśvaramanuttamam| mahāsiddhipradaṁ devi brahmahatyāvināśanam||

Shri Mahadeva said: O Devi, the thirty-fifth is the peerless Indreshvara, O Devi, the giver of great accomplishment, the destroyer of the sin of killing a Brahmin.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.106.2)

आसीत्प्रजापतिस्त्वष्टा तस्य पुत्रः कुशध्वजः। स्वकर्मनिरतो दान्तो वासवेन निपातितः॥

āsītprajāpatistvaṣṭā tasya putraḥ kuśadhvajaḥ| svakarmanirato dānto vāsavena nipātitaḥ||

There was a Prajapati named Tvashta; his son was Kushadhvaja, devoted to his own duty and self-controlled, who was struck down by Vasava (Indra).

Verse 3 (skanda.5.106.3)

तस्य पुत्रं हतं श्रुत्वा त्वष्टा क्रुद्धः प्रजापतिः। अवलुच्य जटामेकामिदं वचनमब्रवीत्॥

tasya putraṁ hataṁ śrutvā tvaṣṭā kruddhaḥ prajāpatiḥ| avalucya jaṭāmekāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt||

Hearing that his son had been killed, the Prajapati Tvashta became enraged; tearing out a single lock of his matted hair, he spoke these words.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.106.4)

अद्य पश्यन्तु मे वीर्यं त्रयो लोकाः सदेवताः। स च पश्यतु दुर्बुद्धिर्ब्रह्महा पाकशासनः॥

adya paśyantu me vīryaṁ trayo lokāḥ sadevatāḥ| sa ca paśyatu durbuddhirbrahmahā pākaśāsanaḥ||

Today let the three worlds together with the gods witness my power, and let that evil-minded Brahmin-slayer Pakashasana (Indra) also see it,

Verse 5 (skanda.5.106.5)

स्वकर्मनिरतो येन मत्सुतो विनिपातितः। इत्युक्त्वा कोपरक्ताक्षो जटामग्नौ जुहाव ताम्॥

svakarmanirato yena matsuto vinipātitaḥ| ityuktvā koparaktākṣo jaṭāmagnau juhāva tām||

by whom my son, devoted to his own duty, was struck down. Saying this, his eyes red with fury, he offered that lock of hair into the fire.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.106.6)

ततो वृत्रः समुत्तस्थौ ज्वालामालासमाकुलः। महाकायो महादंष्ट्रो भिन्नाञ्जनचयप्रभः॥

tato vṛtraḥ samuttasthau jvālāmālāsamākulaḥ| mahākāyo mahādaṁṣṭro bhinnāñjanacayaprabhaḥ||

Then Vritra rose up, wreathed in garlands of flame, huge of body, with great fangs, radiant like a heap of broken collyrium.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.106.7)

इन्द्रशत्रुरमेयात्मा त्वष्टुस्तेजोऽभिबृंहितः। अहन्यहनि सोऽवर्द्धदिषुपातं महाबलम्॥

indraśatrurameyātmā tvaṣṭustejo'bhibṛṁhitaḥ| ahanyahani so'varddhadiṣupātaṁ mahābalam||

The enemy of Indra, of immeasurable might, swollen with the energy of Tvashta, that mighty one grew day by day like a fall of arrows.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.106.8)

वधाय चात्मनो दृष्ट्वा वृत्रं शक्रो महासुरम्। चिन्तयामास सहसा किं कृतं सुकृतं भवेत्॥

vadhāya cātmano dṛṣṭvā vṛtraṁ śakro mahāsuram| cintayāmāsa sahasā kiṁ kṛtaṁ sukṛtaṁ bhavet||

Seeing Vritra, the great demon, bent on his own destruction, Shakra suddenly began to wonder what good action might be done.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.106.9)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे प्राप्तो वृत्रो बलवतां वरः। ददर्श वासवं तत्र देवैः सार्द्धं वरानने॥

etasminnantare prāpto vṛtro balavatāṁ varaḥ| dadarśa vāsavaṁ tatra devaiḥ sārddhaṁ varānane||

Meanwhile Vritra, the foremost of the mighty, arrived and saw Vasava there together with the gods, O fair-faced one.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.106.10)

दैत्यो वृत्रो महाकायश्चक्रे संग्राममुल्बणम्। नानाशस्त्रास्त्रसंक्षोभं भटसंघट्टसंकटम्॥

daityo vṛtro mahākāyaścakre saṁgrāmamulbaṇam| nānāśastrāstrasaṁkṣobhaṁ bhaṭasaṁghaṭṭasaṁkaṭam||

The huge-bodied demon Vritra waged a terrible battle, agitated with many weapons and missiles, made perilous by the clash of warriors.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.106.11)

छिन्नभिन्नतनुत्राणक्रोधरक्तधरातलम्। लूनाननाब्जप्रकरं करपल्लवदुर्गमम्॥

chinnabhinnatanutrāṇakrodharaktadharātalam| lūnānanābjaprakaraṁ karapallavadurgamam||

The ground was reddened with the fury of torn and shattered armour, strewn with heaps of severed lotus-faces, made impassable by heaps of severed tender hands.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.106.12)

कबन्धसंघघटनं घटितामरसैनिकम्। विकीर्णाभरणस्फीतस्फुरद्योधाङ्गभूषणम्॥

kabandhasaṁghaghaṭanaṁ ghaṭitāmarasainikam| vikīrṇābharaṇasphītasphuradyodhāṅgabhūṣaṇam||

It was crowded with masses of headless trunks, thronged with the soldiers of the gods, and adorned with the flashing ornaments scattered from the bodies of warriors.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.106.13)

कल्लोलरुधिरोद्गारपाटलीकृतदिङ्मुखम्। तस्मिन्रणे महाभीमे देवान्भित्त्वा सगुह्यकान्॥

kallolarudhirodgārapāṭalīkṛtadiṅmukham| tasminraṇe mahābhīme devānbhittvā saguhyakān||

The directions were reddened by waves of gushing blood. In that terrible battle, having broken through the gods together with the Guhyakas,

Verse 14 (skanda.5.106.14)

वासवं बन्धयित्वा तु स्वर्गलोकं जगाम ह। राज्यं चकार निःशङ्को निस्सपत्नं वरानने॥

vāsavaṁ bandhayitvā tu svargalokaṁ jagāma ha| rājyaṁ cakāra niḥśaṅko nissapatnaṁ varānane||

Vritra bound Vasava and went to the heavenly world; he ruled the kingdom fearlessly, without a rival, O fair-faced one.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.106.15)

ततस्तु बद्धे देवेन्द्रे बृहस्पतिरुदारधीः। आजगाम तमुद्देशं यत्र बद्धः शतक्रतुः॥

tatastu baddhe devendre bṛhaspatirudāradhīḥ| ājagāma tamuddeśaṁ yatra baddhaḥ śatakratuḥ||

Then, when the lord of the gods was bound, the noble-minded Brihaspati came to that place where Shatakratu (Indra) lay bound.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.106.16)

दृष्ट्वा तथाविधं शक्रमाशीर्भिरभिनन्द्य च। बन्धनान्मोचयित्वा तु प्रोवाचेदं वचस्तदा॥

dṛṣṭvā tathāvidhaṁ śakramāśīrbhirabhinandya ca| bandhanānmocayitvā tu provācedaṁ vacastadā||

Seeing Shakra in that condition, greeting him with blessings, and freeing him from his bonds, he then spoke these words.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.106.17)

अनुकूलो न कालोऽयं सुरेशस्य तवाधुना। उद्योगः सुमहान्दृष्टः संघातश्च सुरद्विषाम्। दृष्टा हि प्रवराः सर्वे मया तत्र महासुराः॥

anukūlo na kālo'yaṁ sureśasya tavādhunā| udyogaḥ sumahāndṛṣṭaḥ saṁghātaśca suradviṣām| dṛṣṭā hi pravarāḥ sarve mayā tatra mahāsurāḥ||

O lord of the gods, this present time is not favourable for you; I have seen a very great mustering and massing of the enemies of the gods — I have seen there all the foremost great demons.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.106.18)

एकैकोऽपि विजेतुं त्वां शक्तः स्यादिति मे मतिः। न तादृक्संगमः शक्र कदाचित्सुरविद्विषाम्। दृष्टो वापि श्रुतो वापि यादृशो ह्यवलोकितः॥

ekaiko'pi vijetuṁ tvāṁ śaktaḥ syāditi me matiḥ| na tādṛksaṁgamaḥ śakra kadācitsuravidviṣām| dṛṣṭo vāpi śruto vāpi yādṛśo hyavalokitaḥ||

It is my opinion that each one alone would be capable of conquering you, O Shakra; never before has such a gathering of the enemies of the gods been seen or heard of, as the one I have now witnessed.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.106.19)

बृहस्पतिवचः श्रुत्वा शक्रः संभ्रममागमत्। ध्यात्वा मुहूर्त्तं प्रोवाच बृहद्बुद्धे बृहस्पते॥

bṛhaspativacaḥ śrutvā śakraḥ saṁbhramamāgamat| dhyātvā muhūrttaṁ provāca bṛhadbuddhe bṛhaspate||

Hearing Brihaspati's words, Shakra became agitated; after reflecting for a moment, he said, 'O Brihaspati of vast wisdom,'

Verse 20 (skanda.5.106.20)

किमत्र प्रतिकर्त्तव्यं वद तावद्बृहस्पते। बहवो बलवन्तश्च दानवाः स्वल्पकैर्दिनैः। मत्सकाशं समेष्यन्ति स च वृत्रो महाबलः॥

kimatra pratikarttavyaṁ vada tāvadbṛhaspate| bahavo balavantaśca dānavāḥ svalpakairdinaiḥ| matsakāśaṁ sameṣyanti sa ca vṛtro mahābalaḥ||

'tell me what should be done here, O Brihaspati. Many powerful Danavas, and that mighty Vritra too, will come against me within a few days.'

Verse 21 (skanda.5.106.21)

इति शक्रवचः श्रुत्वा बृहस्पतिरुवाच तम्। उपायः क्रियतां तूर्णं गच्छ शक्र ममाज्ञया॥

iti śakravacaḥ śrutvā bṛhaspatiruvāca tam| upāyaḥ kriyatāṁ tūrṇaṁ gaccha śakra mamājñayā||

Hearing these words of Shakra, Brihaspati said to him: 'Let a remedy be undertaken at once — go, O Shakra, by my command,'

Verse 22 (skanda.5.106.22)

महाकालवने रम्ये खण्डेश्वरस्य दक्षिणे। सर्वसंपत्करं लिंगं विद्यते तत्र वासव॥

mahākālavane ramye khaṇḍeśvarasya dakṣiṇe| sarvasaṁpatkaraṁ liṁgaṁ vidyate tatra vāsava||

'to the delightful Mahakala forest, south of Khandeshvara. There, O Vasava, exists a linga that bestows all prosperity.'

Verse 23 (skanda.5.106.23)

तदाराधय यत्नेन तत्ते कामं प्रदास्यति। बृहस्पतिवचः श्रुत्वा शक्रः शीघ्रतरं गतः॥

tadārādhaya yatnena tatte kāmaṁ pradāsyati| bṛhaspativacaḥ śrutvā śakraḥ śīghrataraṁ gataḥ||

'Worship it with effort; it will grant you your desire.' Hearing Brihaspati's words, Shakra went there very swiftly.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.106.24)

महाकालवने देवि दृष्ट्वा लिंगमनुत्तमम्। स्तुतिं चकार सहसा भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धरः॥

mahākālavane devi dṛṣṭvā liṁgamanuttamam| stutiṁ cakāra sahasā bhaktinamrātmakandharaḥ||

O Devi, having seen the peerless linga in the Mahakala forest, he at once offered praise, his neck bowed in devotion.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.106.25)

नमो देवाधिदेवाय शंकराय वृषाय च। काम्याय बहुरूपाय व्यालयज्ञोपवीतिने। वरेण्याय नमो नित्यं नमस्ते सर्वकामद॥

namo devādhidevāya śaṁkarāya vṛṣāya ca| kāmyāya bahurūpāya vyālayajñopavītine| vareṇyāya namo nityaṁ namaste sarvakāmada||

'Salutation to the God of gods, to Shankara, to the Bull-bannered one; to the one desired by all, of manifold forms, wearing the serpent as sacred thread; salutation forever to the most excellent one — salutation to you, O giver of all desires.'

Verse 26 (skanda.5.106.26)

आद्यः प्रजासृष्टिकरस्त्वमेव कालः प्रजाः संहरसि त्वमेव। अपांपतिर्भूतपतिस्त्वमेव धनेश्वरस्त्वं दहनस्त्वमेव॥

ādyaḥ prajāsṛṣṭikarastvameva kālaḥ prajāḥ saṁharasi tvameva| apāṁpatirbhūtapatistvameva dhaneśvarastvaṁ dahanastvameva||

'You alone are the primal creator of beings, you alone as Time destroy beings; you alone are the lord of waters, the lord of beings; you are the lord of wealth, you alone are fire.'

Verse 27 (skanda.5.106.27)

चन्द्रश्च सूर्यः पवनस्त्वमेव धाता विधाता परमः पुराणः। जलाशयस्त्वं वरुणस्त्वमेव शैलोत्तमस्त्वं भुजगेश्वरश्च। डिण्डिर्महाकालवृषस्त्वमेव विनायको गुह्यवरस्त्वमेव॥

candraśca sūryaḥ pavanastvameva dhātā vidhātā paramaḥ purāṇaḥ| jalāśayastvaṁ varuṇastvameva śailottamastvaṁ bhujageśvaraśca| ḍiṇḍirmahākālavṛṣastvameva vināyako guhyavarastvameva||

'You are the moon and the sun and the wind; you are Dhatr and Vidhatr, the supreme and the ancient. You are the ocean, you alone are Varuna; you are the best of mountains and the lord of serpents; you alone are Dindi, Mahakala, and the Bull; you alone are Vinayaka, the foremost of the hidden.'

Verse 28 (skanda.5.106.28)

इतीरितां स्तुतिं श्रुत्वा लिंगेनोक्तः शतक्रतुः। गच्छ शक्र ममादेशान्मत्तेजोबृंहितो रणे। हनिष्यसि न संदेहो वृत्रं रिपुविदारण॥

itīritāṁ stutiṁ śrutvā liṁgenoktaḥ śatakratuḥ| gaccha śakra mamādeśānmattejobṛṁhito raṇe| haniṣyasi na saṁdeho vṛtraṁ ripuvidāraṇa||

Having heard this praise thus uttered, Shatakratu was addressed by the linga: 'Go, O Shakra, by my command; swollen with my energy, you will surely slay Vritra in battle, O render of your foes — there is no doubt of it.'

Verse 29 (skanda.5.106.29)

तस्य लिंगस्य माहात्म्यादपां फेनेन पार्वति। जघान समरे वृत्रं पश्यतां त्रिदशद्विषाम्॥

tasya liṁgasya māhātmyādapāṁ phenena pārvati| jaghāna samare vṛtraṁ paśyatāṁ tridaśadviṣām||

O Parvati, by the greatness of that linga, Indra slew Vritra in battle with the foam of the waters, in the very sight of the enemies of the gods.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.106.30)

निहत्य दानवान्पश्चाल्लीलया रणकर्कशः। उवाचेन्द्रस्तदा देवान्हतो वृत्रो महारणे॥

nihatya dānavānpaścāllīlayā raṇakarkaśaḥ| uvācendrastadā devānhato vṛtro mahāraṇe||

Then, having effortlessly slain the demons — he who was fierce in battle — Indra said to the gods, 'Vritra has been slain in the great battle;'

Verse 31 (skanda.5.106.31)

त्रैलोक्याध्यक्षतां प्राप्ता भवन्तो मत्पराक्रमात्। एवमुक्तास्तु शक्रेण ते देवा विस्मयान्विताः॥

trailokyādhyakṣatāṁ prāptā bhavanto matparākramāt| evamuktāstu śakreṇa te devā vismayānvitāḥ||

'through my valour you all have regained sovereignty over the three worlds.' Thus addressed by Shakra, those gods were filled with astonishment,

Verse 32 (skanda.5.106.32)

अस्य देवस्य माहात्म्याद्धतो वृत्रो महासुरः। शरीरे च स्थिताः पापा दर्शनात्संक्षयं गताः॥

asya devasya māhātmyāddhato vṛtro mahāsuraḥ| śarīre ca sthitāḥ pāpā darśanātsaṁkṣayaṁ gatāḥ||

for by the greatness of this God the great demon Vritra had been slain, and the sins that had lodged in his body were destroyed by merely the sight of it.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.106.33)

इन्द्रेणाराधितो यस्माद्देवदेवो महेश्वरः। तस्मादिन्द्रेश्वरो नाम ख्यातो भुवि भविष्यति॥

indreṇārādhito yasmāddevadevo maheśvaraḥ| tasmādindreśvaro nāma khyāto bhuvi bhaviṣyati||

Because the God of gods, Maheshvara, was worshipped by Indra, therefore he will become famed on earth by the name Indreshvara.

Verse 34 (skanda.5.106.34)

दर्शनादस्य लिंगस्य पुरीमिन्द्रस्य शोभनाम्। पापिनोऽपि गमिष्यन्ति सर्वपातकवर्जिताः॥

darśanādasya liṁgasya purīmindrasya śobhanām| pāpino'pi gamiṣyanti sarvapātakavarjitāḥ||

By the sight of this linga, even sinners, freed from all their sins, shall go to the beautiful city of Indra.

Verse 35 (skanda.5.106.35)

यः पश्यति नरो नित्यं श्रीइन्द्रेश्वरसंज्ञकम्। स मुक्तः पातकैः सर्वैर्दिवि मोदिष्यते चिरम्॥

yaḥ paśyati naro nityaṁ śrīindreśvarasaṁjñakam| sa muktaḥ pātakaiḥ sarvairdivi modiṣyate ciram||

The man who daily beholds the one named Shri Indreshvara is freed from all sins and rejoices for a long time in heaven.

Verse 36 (skanda.5.106.36)

इन्द्रेणाराधितं लिंगं भक्त्या यः पूजयिष्यति। स याति वै परं स्थानं दिव्यकल्पचतुष्टयम्॥

indreṇārādhitaṁ liṁgaṁ bhaktyā yaḥ pūjayiṣyati| sa yāti vai paraṁ sthānaṁ divyakalpacatuṣṭayam||

Whoever worships with devotion the linga that was adored by Indra goes indeed to the supreme abode, for four divine kalpas.

Verse 37 (skanda.5.106.37)

येन चेन्द्रेश्वरो देवो भक्त्या सम्यक्प्रपूजितः। तेन विष्णुप्रभृतयो वयं सर्वे सवासवाः। मुनयो लोकपालाश्च पूजिताः स्युर्न संशयः॥

yena cendreśvaro devo bhaktyā samyakprapūjitaḥ| tena viṣṇuprabhṛtayo vayaṁ sarve savāsavāḥ| munayo lokapālāśca pūjitāḥ syurna saṁśayaḥ||

By whomever the God Indreshvara is duly and devoutly worshipped, by him Vishnu and the rest of us, together with Vasava, the sages, and the guardians of the world, are all worshipped — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 38 (skanda.5.106.38)

इत्युक्तः स सुरैः शक्रो वैकुण्ठाद्यैः समन्ततः। तैरेव सहितो देवो जगामाथ त्रिविष्टपम्॥

ityuktaḥ sa suraiḥ śakro vaikuṇṭhādyaiḥ samantataḥ| taireva sahito devo jagāmātha triviṣṭapam||

Thus addressed on all sides by the gods headed by Vaikuntha (Vishnu), Shakra, the god, then went to heaven together with them.

Verse 39 (skanda.5.106.39)

इन्द्रेश्वरस्य देवस्य प्रभावः कथितस्त्वयम्। मार्कण्डेयेश्वरं देवं शृणु पार्वति सांप्रतम्॥

indreśvarasya devasya prabhāvaḥ kathitastvayam| mārkaṇḍeyeśvaraṁ devaṁ śṛṇu pārvati sāṁpratam||

This is the power of the God Indreshvara that has been told to you. Now hear, O Parvati, of the God Markandeyeshvara.
