The Glory of Akrureshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.5.110.1)

हर उवाच। अक्रूरेश्वरमेकोनचत्वारिंशत्तमं शृणु। यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण सुबुद्धिर्जायते नृणाम्॥

hara uvāca| akrūreśvaramekonacatvāriṁśattamaṁ śṛṇu| yasya darśanamātreṇa subuddhirjāyate nṛṇām||

Hara said: Hear of Akrureshvara, the thirty-ninth, by the mere sight of whom good understanding is born in men.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.110.2)

पुरा त्वयैव कल्पादौ परया शक्तिरूपया। कृतं कृत्स्नं वरारोहे त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्॥

purā tvayaiva kalpādau parayā śaktirūpayā| kṛtaṁ kṛtsnaṁ varārohe trailokyaṁ sacarācaram||

Formerly, at the beginning of the kalpa, by you alone, in the form of the supreme Shakti, O fair-hipped one, the entire threefold world together with its moving and unmoving beings was made.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.110.3)

ततस्त्वं संस्तुता देवैः सकिंनरमहोरगैः। प्रदक्षिणां प्रकुर्वति गणा नानाविधास्तु ते॥

tatastvaṁ saṁstutā devaiḥ sakiṁnaramahoragaiḥ| pradakṣiṇāṁ prakurvati gaṇā nānāvidhāstu te||

Then you were praised by the gods, together with the kinnaras and great serpents; your manifold ganas performed circumambulation around you,

Verse 4 (skanda.5.110.4)

नमस्कारं प्रकुर्वति स्तोत्रं कुर्वंति चापरे। न करोति नमस्कारमेको भृंगिरिटिस्तदा॥

namaskāraṁ prakurvati stotraṁ kurvaṁti cāpare| na karoti namaskārameko bhṛṁgiriṭistadā||

some performed obeisance, others offered hymns of praise; only one, Bhringiriti, did not perform obeisance then.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.110.5)

क्रूरां बुद्धिं समासाद्य गर्वेणतीव गर्वितः।

krūrāṁ buddhiṁ samāsādya garveṇatīva garvitaḥ|

Having conceived a harsh mind, exceedingly proud through his arrogance,

Verse 6 (skanda.5.110.6)

एको देवो महादेवः स्त्रिया किमनया मम। यदा नायाति ते पार्श्वं तदा प्रोक्तस्त्वया गतः॥

eko devo mahādevaḥ striyā kimanayā mama| yadā nāyāti te pārśvaṁ tadā proktastvayā gataḥ||

he thought: "The great God alone is God; what have I to do with this woman?" When he did not come to your side, you yourself went and said to him:

Verse 7 (skanda.5.110.7)

कस्मान्न कुरुषे पूजां प्रदक्षिणमथो स्तुतिम्। मद्भक्तो मदधीनोऽसि मम पुत्रो मया कृतः। इत्थंभूतगणेश त्वं किं वै लौल्येन वर्त्तसे॥

kasmānna kuruṣe pūjāṁ pradakṣiṇamatho stutim| madbhakto madadhīno'si mama putro mayā kṛtaḥ| itthaṁbhūtagaṇeśa tvaṁ kiṁ vai laulyena varttase||

"Why do you not perform worship, circumambulation, or praise? You are my devotee, dependent on me, my son, made by me. O lord of the ganas of such nature, why do you behave with such fickleness?"

Verse 8 (skanda.5.110.8)

इति भृंगिरिटिः श्रुत्वा कुद्धस्त्वामाह गर्वितः। नाहं पार्वति ते पुत्रः पुत्रोऽहं शंकरस्य तु॥

iti bhṛṁgiriṭiḥ śrutvā kuddhastvāmāha garvitaḥ| nāhaṁ pārvati te putraḥ putro'haṁ śaṁkarasya tu||

Hearing this, Bhringiriti, angry and proud, said to you: "I am not your son, O Parvati; I am the son of Shankara alone."

Verse 9 (skanda.5.110.9)

एष एव च मे माता एष एव च मे पिता। एवं रात्रिदिनं यामि शरणं परमेष्ठिनम्॥

eṣa eva ca me mātā eṣa eva ca me pitā| evaṁ rātridinaṁ yāmi śaraṇaṁ parameṣṭhinam||

"He alone is my mother and he alone is my father; thus, day and night, I go for refuge to the Supreme Lord alone."

Verse 10 (skanda.5.110.10)

त्वमप्यस्यैव शरणं ननु पार्वति संस्थिता। यदि च त्वामहं वंदे तद्वंदे सकलान्गणान्॥

tvamapyasyaiva śaraṇaṁ nanu pārvati saṁsthitā| yadi ca tvāmahaṁ vaṁde tadvaṁde sakalāngaṇān||

"You too are surely established as taking refuge in him alone, O Parvati; if I were to bow to you, then I would be bowing to all the ganas as well."

Verse 11 (skanda.5.110.11)

इति भृंगिरिटेः श्रुत्वा वाक्यं कुपितया त्वया। तस्योक्तं प्रमथेशस्य भीरु भृंगिरिटेरिदम्॥

iti bhṛṁgiriṭeḥ śrutvā vākyaṁ kupitayā tvayā| tasyoktaṁ pramatheśasya bhīru bhṛṁgiriṭeridam||

Hearing this speech of Bhringiriti, you, being enraged, said this to that fearful lord of the Pramathas, Bhringiriti:

Verse 12 (skanda.5.110.12)

सुतो भूत्वा भवान्कस्माददाक्षिण्यं ब्रवीषि माम्। त्वङ्मांसशोणितांत्रं च मातृकं तनयस्य तु॥

suto bhūtvā bhavānkasmādadākṣiṇyaṁ bravīṣi mām| tvaṅmāṁsaśoṇitāṁtraṁ ca mātṛkaṁ tanayasya tu||

"Having become a son, why do you speak to me with such disrespect? Skin, flesh, blood and intestines belong to the son from the mother;"

Verse 13 (skanda.5.110.13)

नखदंतास्थिसंघातः शिश्नं वाक्च शिरस्तथा। तथैव शुक्रं गणप पैतृकं तु शरीरकम्॥

nakhadaṁtāsthisaṁghātaḥ śiśnaṁ vākca śirastathā| tathaiva śukraṁ gaṇapa paitṛkaṁ tu śarīrakam||

"nails, teeth, the mass of bones, the male organ, speech and the head, and likewise semen, O lord of the ganas — these are the paternal portion of the body."

Verse 14 (skanda.5.110.14)

इति भृंगिरिटिः श्रुत्वा सद्यो योगबलेन तु। मांसादि त्यक्तवान्सर्वं मातृकं भागमेव हि॥

iti bhṛṁgiriṭiḥ śrutvā sadyo yogabalena tu| māṁsādi tyaktavānsarvaṁ mātṛkaṁ bhāgameva hi||

Hearing this, Bhringiriti, at once by the power of yoga, cast off all the flesh and the rest — the maternal portion entirely.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.110.15)

ततः प्रभृति वामोरु नखदंतास्थिनासिकः। स च क्रूरां मतिं कृत्वा क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः॥

tataḥ prabhṛti vāmoru nakhadaṁtāsthināsikaḥ| sa ca krūrāṁ matiṁ kṛtvā krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ||

From then on, his left thigh, nails, teeth and nose were left wasted; and he, having formed a harsh resolve, his eyes reddened with anger,

Verse 16 (skanda.5.110.16)

त्वां परित्यज्य दुःखार्त्त आजगाम ममांतिकम्। अथ त्वया तदा शप्तो गणो भृंगिरिटिः प्रिये॥

tvāṁ parityajya duḥkhārtta ājagāma mamāṁtikam| atha tvayā tadā śapto gaṇo bhṛṁgiriṭiḥ priye||

abandoning you, tormented by grief, came to me. Then, O beloved, that gana Bhringiriti was cursed by you at that time:

Verse 17 (skanda.5.110.17)

क्रूरा बुद्धिः कृता यस्मात्त्वया कुमतिना भृशम्। तस्मात्त्वं मानुषे लोके गमिष्यसि न संशयः॥

krūrā buddhiḥ kṛtā yasmāttvayā kumatinā bhṛśam| tasmāttvaṁ mānuṣe loke gamiṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ||

"Since, with your evil mind, you have conceived so harsh a resolve, therefore you shall go to the world of men — there is no doubt of it."

Verse 18 (skanda.5.110.18)

इत्युक्तस्तु त्वया देवि गणो भृंगिरिटिस्तथा। पपात मानुषं लोकं पुण्यांते सुकृती यथा॥

ityuktastu tvayā devi gaṇo bhṛṁgiriṭistathā| papāta mānuṣaṁ lokaṁ puṇyāṁte sukṛtī yathā||

Thus addressed by you, O Devi, that gana Bhringiriti fell to the world of men, as a virtuous soul falls when his merit is exhausted.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.110.19)

स गत्वा पुष्करद्वीपं तपसे भावितात्मवान्। तत्रैकपादूर्द्ध्वभुजो दशपद्मान्यवस्थितः। दग्धीभूतं च तपसा जगद्वै दुष्करेण तु॥

sa gatvā puṣkaradvīpaṁ tapase bhāvitātmavān| tatraikapādūrddhvabhujo daśapadmānyavasthitaḥ| dagdhībhūtaṁ ca tapasā jagadvai duṣkareṇa tu||

He went to Pushkara-dvipa, and with a mind fixed on austerity, stood there on one leg, arms raised, amid ten lotuses, having scorched the world with his terrible, hard-to-perform austerity.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.110.20)

ततो ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शक्रश्च त्रिदशैः सह। वयं च चारुजघने तत्समीपं समागतः॥

tato brahmā ca viṣṇuśca śakraśca tridaśaiḥ saha| vayaṁ ca cārujaghane tatsamīpaṁ samāgataḥ||

Then Brahma and Vishnu and Shakra, together with the gods, and I too, O fair-hipped one, came near to him.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.110.21)

उपगम्य ततस्तस्य कथितं पुरतो मया। अलं क्रूरेण तपसा लोकस्योत्सादनेन वै॥

upagamya tatastasya kathitaṁ purato mayā| alaṁ krūreṇa tapasā lokasyotsādanena vai||

Approaching him, I then said before him: "Enough of this harsh austerity, this destruction of the world!"

Verse 22 (skanda.5.110.22)

त्रैलोक्यमपि निःसंज्ञं जातमेवं स्थिते त्वयि। संहरस्व तपो घोरं लोकसंतापनं महत्॥

trailokyamapi niḥsaṁjñaṁ jātamevaṁ sthite tvayi| saṁharasva tapo ghoraṁ lokasaṁtāpanaṁ mahat||

"The threefold world has become senseless while you remain thus; withdraw this terrible austerity, which greatly torments the world."

Verse 23 (skanda.5.110.23)

प्रार्थ्यतां पार्वती पुत्र सा दास्यति वरं च ते। अस्याः प्रसादान्मुक्तिस्ते शापाच्चैव भविष्यति। एवमुक्तस्तदा तेन प्रार्थिता त्वं महेश्वरि॥

prārthyatāṁ pārvatī putra sā dāsyati varaṁ ca te| asyāḥ prasādānmuktiste śāpāccaiva bhaviṣyati| evamuktastadā tena prārthitā tvaṁ maheśvari||

"Let Parvati be entreated, my son; she will grant you a boon. By her grace your release from the curse shall come to pass." Thus addressed, you were then entreated, O Maheshvari,

Verse 24 (skanda.5.110.24)

गणेन भृंगिरिटिना भक्तिनम्रेण सादरात्॥

gaṇena bhṛṁgiriṭinā bhaktinamreṇa sādarāt||

by the gana Bhringiriti, bowed down in devotion, with reverence.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.110.25)

त्वया प्रोक्तं विशालाक्षि पुत्र गच्छ ममाज्ञया। महाकालवने रम्ये तत्राऽक्रूरो भविष्यसि॥

tvayā proktaṁ viśālākṣi putra gaccha mamājñayā| mahākālavane ramye tatrā'krūro bhaviṣyasi||

You said, O wide-eyed one: "My son, go, by my command, to the delightful Mahakala forest; there you shall become Akrura, free of harshness."

Verse 26 (skanda.5.110.26)

पुनः प्राप्स्यसि कैलासं सिद्धगंधर्वसेवितम्। अंकपादाग्रतो लिंगं सप्तकल्पानुगं महत्। यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण शुभा बुद्धिः प्रजायते॥

punaḥ prāpsyasi kailāsaṁ siddhagaṁdharvasevitam| aṁkapādāgrato liṁgaṁ saptakalpānugaṁ mahat| yasya darśanamātreṇa śubhā buddhiḥ prajāyate||

"You shall again reach Kailasa, served by siddhas and gandharvas; at the foot of my lap there stands a great linga, enduring through seven kalpas, by the mere sight of which an auspicious understanding is born."

Verse 27 (skanda.5.110.27)

कृतघ्ना नास्तिकाः क्रूरा ये च विश्वासघातकाः। महापातकिनो ये च ये च शापवशं गताः। दर्शनात्तस्य लिंगस्य तेऽपि स्वर्गभुजो नराः॥

kṛtaghnā nāstikāḥ krūrā ye ca viśvāsaghātakāḥ| mahāpātakino ye ca ye ca śāpavaśaṁ gatāḥ| darśanāttasya liṁgasya te'pi svargabhujo narāḥ||

"Even the ungrateful, the atheists, the cruel, and the treacherous, even great sinners and those fallen under a curse — by the sight of that linga, these men too shall become enjoyers of heaven."

Verse 28 (skanda.5.110.28)

क्रूरां बुद्धिं समासाद्य कंसं हत्वा च केशिहा। बलदेवेन सहितस्त्यक्त्वा तां मथुरां पुरीम्॥

krūrāṁ buddhiṁ samāsādya kaṁsaṁ hatvā ca keśihā| baladevena sahitastyaktvā tāṁ mathurāṁ purīm||

Having conceived a harsh resolve, the slayer of Keshi, after killing Kamsa, together with Baladeva, left that city of Mathura;

Verse 29 (skanda.5.110.29)

महाकालवनं गत्वा तोषयित्वा महेश्वरम्। अक्रूरत्वं च संप्राप्तं कीर्त्तिर्लब्धा च शाश्वती॥

mahākālavanaṁ gatvā toṣayitvā maheśvaram| akrūratvaṁ ca saṁprāptaṁ kīrttirlabdhā ca śāśvatī||

going to the Mahakala forest and gratifying Maheshvara, he attained the state of Akrura, freedom from harshness, and won everlasting fame.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.110.30)

त्वदीयं वचनं श्रुत्वा गणो भृंगिरिटिस्तदा। तथेति प्रत्ययी जातो महाकालवनं गतः। देवमाराधयामास तपसा दुष्करेण तु॥

tvadīyaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā gaṇo bhṛṁgiriṭistadā| tatheti pratyayī jāto mahākālavanaṁ gataḥ| devamārādhayāmāsa tapasā duṣkareṇa tu||

Having heard your word, the gana Bhringiriti, then trusting it, said "so be it," and went to the Mahakala forest, and worshipped the God with severe austerity.

Verse 31 (skanda.5.110.31)

एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवि लिंगमध्यात्त्वमुत्थिता। अर्द्धांगं मामकं कृत्वा स्वकीयांगमथार्द्धतः। फणींद्रबद्धजूटार्द्धमर्द्धधमिल्लभूषितम्॥

etasminnaṁtare devi liṁgamadhyāttvamutthitā| arddhāṁgaṁ māmakaṁ kṛtvā svakīyāṁgamathārddhataḥ| phaṇīṁdrabaddhajūṭārddhamarddhadhamillabhūṣitam||

Meanwhile, O Devi, you arose from the midst of the linga, having made half of the form mine and the other half your own — half with matted locks bound by the king of serpents, adorned on the other half with a braided knot of hair;

Verse 32 (skanda.5.110.32)

पत्रवल्लीविचित्रार्धमर्द्धचंद्रविराजितम्। मुक्ताहारनिबद्धार्द्धमर्द्धं सर्पैश्च वेष्टितम्॥

patravallīvicitrārdhamarddhacaṁdravirājitam| muktāhāranibaddhārddhamarddhaṁ sarpaiśca veṣṭitam||

half strewn with the varied designs of leaves and creepers, resplendent on the other half with the crescent moon; half bound with a pearl-necklace, half encircled with serpents.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.110.33)

ततो भृंगिरिटिर्देवि दृष्ट्वा तन्महदद्रुतम्। चिंतयामास हृदये मयाऽज्ञानादनुष्ठितम्॥

tato bhṛṁgiriṭirdevi dṛṣṭvā tanmahadadrutam| ciṁtayāmāsa hṛdaye mayā'jñānādanuṣṭhitam||

Then Bhringiriti, O Devi, seeing that great and sudden form, pondered in his heart: "This was done by me out of ignorance —"

Verse 34 (skanda.5.110.34)

उमा च शंकरश्चैव देहमेकं सनातनम्। एका मूर्त्तिरनिर्देश्या द्विधा भेदेन दृश्यते॥

umā ca śaṁkaraścaiva dehamekaṁ sanātanam| ekā mūrttiranirdeśyā dvidhā bhedena dṛśyate||

"Uma and Shankara are indeed one eternal body; one indescribable form is seen as twofold through distinction."

Verse 35 (skanda.5.110.35)

एवं चिंतयतस्तस्य भक्तिनम्रस्य पार्व्वति। प्रोक्तं त्वया प्रसन्नाहं वरं वरय पुत्रक॥

evaṁ ciṁtayatastasya bhaktinamrasya pārvvati| proktaṁ tvayā prasannāhaṁ varaṁ varaya putraka||

While he thus reflected, bowed down in devotion, O Parvati, you said to him: "I am pleased; choose a boon, my son."

Verse 36 (skanda.5.110.36)

तेनोक्तं यदि तुष्टासि मातर्मम महेश्वरि। अस्य लिंगस्य माहात्म्यात्क्रूरा बुद्धिर्गता मम॥

tenoktaṁ yadi tuṣṭāsi mātarmama maheśvari| asya liṁgasya māhātmyātkrūrā buddhirgatā mama||

He said: "If you are pleased, O my mother, O Maheshvari, by the greatness of this linga my harsh mind has departed;"

Verse 37 (skanda.5.110.37)

अक्रूरेश्वरनामायं देवः ख्यातो भवत्विति। त्वं देवि सर्वभावानामेका कारणमुच्यते॥

akrūreśvaranāmāyaṁ devaḥ khyāto bhavatviti| tvaṁ devi sarvabhāvānāmekā kāraṇamucyate||

"let this God become famed by the name Akrureshvara. You, O Devi, are declared the sole cause of all existence;"

Verse 38 (skanda.5.110.38)

त्वं मूर्ता पुण्यनिचया त्वं गतिः पुण्यसेविनाम्। पिता माता सुहृद्बन्धुस्त्वमेका कारणं परम्॥

tvaṁ mūrtā puṇyanicayā tvaṁ gatiḥ puṇyasevinām| pitā mātā suhṛdbandhustvamekā kāraṇaṁ param||

"you are the embodiment of the accumulation of merit, you are the goal of those devoted to merit; father, mother, friend, kinsman — you alone are the supreme cause."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.110.39)

कुरु पुण्यतमं स्थानं ब्रह्महत्यादिनाशनम्। भुक्तिदं मुक्तिदं चैव वांछितार्थप्रदायकम्॥

kuru puṇyatamaṁ sthānaṁ brahmahatyādināśanam| bhuktidaṁ muktidaṁ caiva vāṁchitārthapradāyakam||

"Make this the most meritorious place, the destroyer of the sin of Brahmin-slaying and the like, granter of enjoyment and liberation, and bestower of all desired ends."

Verse 40 (skanda.5.110.40)

तथेति च त्वया प्रोक्तं गिरा मधुरया तदा। यत्ते प्रियतमं वत्स तत्पूर्वं प्रकरोम्यहम्॥

tatheti ca tvayā proktaṁ girā madhurayā tadā| yatte priyatamaṁ vatsa tatpūrvaṁ prakaromyaham||

"So be it," you then said with a sweet voice: "Whatever is dearest to you, my child, that I shall accomplish first."

Verse 41 (skanda.5.110.41)

न मेऽस्ति दुष्करं पुत्र त्वत्कृते कनकप्रभ। अस्मिन्स्थाने तु ये देवमकूरेश्वरसंज्ञकम्। प्रसंगादपि पश्यंति अपि पापरता नराः। तेऽप्यवश्यं भविष्यंति त्वत्समा नियतं गणाः॥

na me'sti duṣkaraṁ putra tvatkṛte kanakaprabha| asminsthāne tu ye devamakūreśvarasaṁjñakam| prasaṁgādapi paśyaṁti api pāparatā narāḥ| te'pyavaśyaṁ bhaviṣyaṁti tvatsamā niyataṁ gaṇāḥ||

"Nothing is difficult for me for your sake, O son of golden radiance. In this place, those men who behold this God named Akrureshvara — even incidentally, even sinners intent on evil — they too shall certainly become ganas equal to you."

Verse 42 (skanda.5.110.42)

भक्त्या स्तोष्यंति ये नाम लिंगस्यास्य च मानवाः। मानसैः पातकैर्मुक्ता यास्यंति स्वर्गमक्षयम्॥

bhaktyā stoṣyaṁti ye nāma liṁgasyāsya ca mānavāḥ| mānasaiḥ pātakairmuktā yāsyaṁti svargamakṣayam||

"Those men who will praise the name of this linga with devotion, freed from mental sins, shall go to imperishable heaven."

Verse 43 (skanda.5.110.43)

स्नात्वा तु विधिवत्पूजां यः करिष्यति मानवः। स मुक्तः पातकैः सर्वैः प्राप्स्यते रविमंडलम्॥

snātvā tu vidhivatpūjāṁ yaḥ kariṣyati mānavaḥ| sa muktaḥ pātakaiḥ sarvaiḥ prāpsyate ravimaṁḍalam||

"The man who, having bathed, performs worship according to rite, freed from all sins, shall attain the solar orb."

Verse 44 (skanda.5.110.44)

आयुरारोग्यमैश्वर्यं काममत्र हि वांछितम्। गोसहस्रफलं चात्र स्पृष्ट्वा प्राप्स्यति मानवः॥

āyurārogyamaiśvaryaṁ kāmamatra hi vāṁchitam| gosahasraphalaṁ cātra spṛṣṭvā prāpsyati mānavaḥ||

"Longevity, health, lordship, whatever is desired here, and the merit of a thousand cows, a man shall obtain merely by touching it."

Verse 45 (skanda.5.110.45)

स्नात्वा मंदाकिनीकुंडे योऽकूरेश्वरमीश्वरम्। पूजयेद्विविधैः पुष्पैर्महापापहतोपि वा॥

snātvā maṁdākinīkuṁḍe yo'kūreśvaramīśvaram| pūjayedvividhaiḥ puṣpairmahāpāpahatopi vā||

"He who, having bathed in the Mandakini pool, worships Akrureshvara the Lord with various flowers — even one struck down by great sin —"

Verse 46 (skanda.5.110.46)

विमानं दिव्यमारूढो यावत्कल्पचतुष्टयम्। गंधर्वैर्गीयमानस्तु सोऽपि स्वर्गं गमिष्यति॥

vimānaṁ divyamārūḍho yāvatkalpacatuṣṭayam| gaṁdharvairgīyamānastu so'pi svargaṁ gamiṣyati||

"mounted on a divine chariot, for four kalpas, sung to by gandharvas, he too shall go to heaven."

Verse 47 (skanda.5.110.47)

इत्युक्तः स गणो देवि मत्समीपमुपागतः। शापान्मुक्तस्त्वया सार्धं विस्मृता किं वरानने॥

ityuktaḥ sa gaṇo devi matsamīpamupāgataḥ| śāpānmuktastvayā sārdhaṁ vismṛtā kiṁ varānane||

Thus addressed, that gana, O Devi, came near to me, released from the curse together with you — have you forgotten, O fair-faced one?

Verse 48 (skanda.5.110.48)

एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। अक्रूरेश्वरदेवस्य शृणु कुंडेश्वरं परम्॥

eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| akrūreśvaradevasya śṛṇu kuṁḍeśvaraṁ param||
