Avanti Khanda · Chapter 112
The Glory of Lumpeshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.5.112.1)
śrīmahādeva uvāca| catvāriṁśattamaṁ saikamīśvaraṁ viddhi pārvati| luṁpeśvaramiti khyātaṁ nāma yasya mahītale||
Shri Mahadeva said: Know the forty-first Lord, O Parvati, whose name on earth is renowned as Lumpeshvara.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.112.2)
deśe mlecchagaṇākīrṇe babhūva jagatīpatiḥ| luṁpādhipa iti khyāto maheṁdrasamavikramaḥ||
In a land filled with barbarian hordes there was a lord of the earth, known as the chief of the Lumpas, of valour equal to great Indra.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.112.3)
tasyāsīddayitā bhāryā viśālānāma nāmataḥ| sā yauvanaguṇopetā rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi||
He had a beloved wife named Vishala, endowed with the qualities of youth, unrivalled in beauty on earth.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.112.4)
sa yuddhakāmo nṛpatiḥ paryapṛcchadvijottamān||
That king, desiring war, questioned the foremost of the twice-born.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.112.5)
atha kenāpi kathitamāśrame sāmago dvijaḥ| tena sārddhaṁ mahābāho yudhyasva tvaṁ nṛpottama||
Then someone told him of a Sama-Veda-chanting Brahmin in a hermitage: "Fight with him, O mighty-armed, foremost of kings."
Verse 6 (skanda.5.112.6)
tataḥ sa prasthito rājā mlecchaiḥ sārddhaṁ sahasraśaḥ| tuṣārairbarbarairluṁpaiḥ pahlavaiḥ śvagaṇaistathā||
Then that king set out, together with thousands of mlecchas — Tusharas, Barbaras, Lumpas, Pahlavas and dog-tribes,
Verse 7 (skanda.5.112.7)
dasyubhiḥ saṁvṛtaḥ krūraiḥ krodhenākuliteṁdriyaḥ| ājagāmāśramaṁ puṇyaṁ sāmagasya munestadā||
surrounded by cruel bandits, his senses disturbed by anger, and came then to the sacred hermitage of the sage Samaga.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.112.8)
muninā pūjitastena madhuparkādiviṣṭaraiḥ| etasminnantare rājā homadhenuṁ dadarśa ha||
He was honoured by that sage with madhuparka and a seat and the like; meanwhile the king saw the sacrificial cow.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.112.9)
prārthayāmāsa sahasā na dattā muninā tadā| pramathya cāśramaṁ tasya homadhenuṁ jahāra saḥ| vanaṁ babhaṁja sakalaṁ tasya viprasya paśyataḥ||
He suddenly demanded her; the sage did not give her then. Ravaging the hermitage, he seized the sacrificial cow, and destroyed the entire grove before the eyes of that Brahmin.
Verse 10 (skanda.5.112.10)
kālyamānāṁ ca gāṁ dṛṣṭvā vatsaṁ cātīva duḥkhitam| uvāca vacanaṁ vipro mā rājansāhasaṁ kuru||
Seeing the cow being dragged away, and her calf exceedingly distressed, the Brahmin spoke these words: "O king, do not commit this rash act."
Verse 11 (skanda.5.112.11)
evaṁ vadaṁtaṁ vipreṁdraṁ śaraistīkṣṇairjaghāna ha| luṁpaḥ krodhasamāviṣṭo duṣṭo duṣṭajanairvṛtaḥ||
While that foremost Brahmin was speaking thus, the wicked Lumpa, filled with anger, surrounded by wicked men, struck him with sharp arrows.
Verse 12 (skanda.5.112.12)
asakṛtputraputreti vilapaṁtamanāthavat| hatvā ca sāmagaṁ vipraṁ jagāma svagṛhaṁ nṛpaḥ||
While he lamented again and again, helplessly crying "My son, my son," the king, having slain the Brahmin Samaga, went to his own home.
Verse 13 (skanda.5.112.13)
etasminnaṁtare putraḥ samitpāṇirupāgataḥ| dṛṣṭvā ca pitaraṁ vipraṁ tadā mṛtyuvaśaṁ gatam| anāgasaṁ mahātmānaṁ vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ||
Meanwhile his son arrived with sacrificial fuel in hand; seeing his Brahmin father, then fallen under the sway of death, that innocent great soul lamented in deep sorrow.
Verse 14 (skanda.5.112.14)
kenedaṁ kutsitaṁ karma kṛtaṁ pāpena me pitā| ayudhyamāno vṛddhaḥ sanhataḥ śaraśataiḥ śiteḥ||
"By whom was this vile deed done to my father, sinner that he is — an old man, not even fighting, slain by hundreds of sharp arrows?"
Verse 15 (skanda.5.112.15)
vilapyaivaṁ sakaruṇaṁ bahunānāvidhaṁ tathā| pretakāryāṇi sarvāṇi pituścakre vidhānataḥ||
Having thus lamented piteously in many ways, he performed all the funeral rites for his father according to the prescribed rule.
Verse 16 (skanda.5.112.16)
dadāha pitaraṁ cāgnau toyamādāya satvaram| tasya luṁpādhipasyāpi dadau śāpaṁ sudāruṇam||
He cremated his father in fire, and, quickly taking water, pronounced upon that lord of the Lumpas a most terrible curse:
Verse 17 (skanda.5.112.17)
svadharmanirato vidvānyena me nihataḥ pitā| sa pāpātmā durācāraḥ kuṣṭharogamavāpnuyāt||
"By whom my father — a learned man devoted to his own duty — was slain, may that sinful, evil-conducted one obtain the disease of leprosy."
Verse 18 (skanda.5.112.18)
etasminnantare rājā kuṣṭharogeṇa pīḍitaḥ| acaṁkramaṇatāṁ prāpto luṁpādhīśo varānane||
Meanwhile, O fair-faced one, the king, the lord of the Lumpas, afflicted with leprosy, became unable even to walk.
Verse 19 (skanda.5.112.19)
auṣadhairadhiko'bhyeti brahmaśāpaprabhāvataḥ| vairāgyānmartukāmo'sau kāṣṭhānyādāya duḥkhitaḥ||
The disease increased despite medicines, by the power of the Brahmin's curse; desiring death out of despair, that grieving one gathered wood,
Verse 20 (skanda.5.112.20)
citāṁ kartuṁ samārebhe samāyāto'tha nāradaḥ| pūjito vidhinā tena duḥkhitena nṛpeṇa hi||
to make a funeral pyre; then Narada arrived, and was honoured with due rite by that sorrowing king.
Verse 21 (skanda.5.112.21)
atha papraccha luṁpo'sau nāradaṁ munisattamam| akasmānmama devarṣe kuṣṭharogo babhūva ha| tenāhaṁ pīḍito'tīva na ca śāṁtiṁ vrajatyasau||
Then that Lumpa asked Narada, the foremost of sages: "O divine sage, suddenly this leprosy has come upon me; I am exceedingly afflicted by it, and it does not subside;"
Verse 22 (skanda.5.112.22)
auṣadhairvarddhate kasmādetadākhyātumarhasi| na testvaviditaṁ kiṁcidihaloke paratra ca||
"why does it increase despite medicines — you should tell me this. Nothing at all is unknown to you, in this world or the next."
Verse 23 (skanda.5.112.23)
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā luṁpādhīśasya nāradaḥ| kathayāmāsa tatsarvaṁ brahmaśāpaṁ sudustaram||
Hearing these words of the lord of the Lumpas, Narada told him everything — the utterly inescapable curse of the Brahmin.
Verse 24 (skanda.5.112.24)
tataḥ sabhāryo nṛpatiḥ prārthayāmāsa nāradam| kathaṁ me bhagavañchāpo dustaro yāsyati kṣayam||
Then the king, together with his wife, entreated Narada: "O Lord, how shall this inescapable curse of mine come to an end?"
Verse 25 (skanda.5.112.25)
evamuktastu lumpena nārado bhagavānṛṣiḥ| kāruṇyātkathayāmāsa sabhāryasya yaśasvini||
Thus addressed by Lumpa, the venerable sage Narada, out of compassion, told the glorious one, together with his wife:
Verse 26 (skanda.5.112.26)
mahākālavane rājãlliṁgaṁ kuṣṭhaharaṁ param| sarvasaṁpatkaraṁ tatra vidyate pāpanāśanam||
"In the Mahakala forest, O king, there is a supreme leprosy-curing linga, granter of all prosperity, destroyer of sin."
Verse 27 (skanda.5.112.27)
śiprāyāśca taṭe ramye keśavārkasya pūrvataḥ| tatra tvaṁ gaccha rājeṁdra kāṁtyā yukto bhaviṣyasi||
"On the lovely bank of the Shipra, east of Keshavarka; go there, O foremost of kings, and you shall be endowed with radiant beauty."
Verse 28 (skanda.5.112.28)
evamuktastu luṁpo'sau hyājagāma tvarānvitaḥ| mahākālavanaṁ ramyaṁ maharṣigaṇasevitam||
Thus addressed, that Lumpa went quickly, with haste, to the delightful Mahakala forest, served by throngs of great sages.
Verse 29 (skanda.5.112.29)
prāptaḥ svargopamaṁ bhūpaḥ śiprayā pariśobhitam| viveśa ca mudā yukto dṛṣṭvā liṁgamanuttamam||
The king, having reached that heaven-like place, adorned by the Shipra, entered it joyfully, on beholding the peerless linga.
Verse 30 (skanda.5.112.30)
snātvā śiprājale puṇye mahāpātakanāśane| darśanāttasya liṁgasya divyarūpo vabhūva ha||
Bathing in the sacred waters of the Shipra, destroyer of great sins, by the sight of that linga he became of divine form —
Verse 31 (skanda.5.112.31)
kuṣṭharogeṇa muktastu mukto vai brahmahatyayā| kṛtakṛtyo nṛpo jāto darśanādeva pārvati||
freed from leprosy and freed indeed from the sin of Brahmin-slaying, the king became fulfilled, O Parvati, by the very sight alone.
Verse 32 (skanda.5.112.32)
sa tatra tāmuṣitvaikāṁ rajanīṁ pṛthivīpatiḥ| tāpasānāṁ paraṁ cakre satkāraṁ bhāryayā saha||
Having spent that one night there, the lord of the earth, together with his wife, showed the highest honour to the ascetics.
Verse 33 (skanda.5.112.33)
tataḥ kṛtasvastvayanastāpasaistairmahātmabhiḥ| divyajñānānvitairdivyaiḥ sūryavaiśvānaraprabhaiḥ||
Then, when the rites of blessing had been performed by those great-souled ascetics, endowed with divine knowledge, divine, radiant like the sun and fire,
Verse 34 (skanda.5.112.34)
kṛtaṁ nāma tadā tasya liṁgasya kamalānane| luṁpenārādhito yasmāddevo'yaṁ kuṣṭhanāśanaḥ| lumpeśvara iti khyāto bhaviṣyati mahītale||
a name was then given, O lotus-faced one, to that linga: "Since this God, the destroyer of leprosy, was worshipped by Lumpa, he shall become renowned on earth by the name Lumpeshvara."
Verse 35 (skanda.5.112.35)
pūjayiṣyaṁti ye bhaktyā liṁgaṁ lumpeśvaraṁ param| snātvā śiprājale puṇye te yāsyaṁti paraṁ padam||
Those who will worship the supreme linga Lumpeshvara with devotion, having bathed in the sacred waters of the Shipra, shall go to the supreme abode.
Verse 36 (skanda.5.112.36)
prārthayiṣyaṁti yānkāmānmanasā cepsitānpriyān| tānāpsyaṁti na sandeho lumpeśasya ca darśanāt||
Whatever desires, dear and longed for in the mind, they shall pray for, they shall obtain without doubt, by the very sight of Lumpesha.
Verse 37 (skanda.5.112.37)
mahāpāpasamāyukto yaḥ paśyati samāhitaḥ| liṁgaṁ lumpeśvaraṁ so'pi devatulyo bhaviṣyati||
He who, laden with great sin, beholds the linga Lumpeshvara with a composed mind, he too shall become equal to a god.
Verse 38 (skanda.5.112.38)
goghnaścaiva kṛtaghnaśca mātṛhā gurutalpagaḥ| duṣṭakarmasamācāro bhrātṛhā pitṛhā tathā||
The slayer of a cow, the ungrateful, the slayer of a mother, one who defiles his guru's bed, one of evil conduct and deeds, the slayer of a brother, likewise the slayer of a father —
Verse 39 (skanda.5.112.39)
lumpeśvaraṁ sakṛtpaśyanmucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ| pūjito'pi dahetpāpaṁ saptajanmārjitaṁ ca yat||
whoever beholds Lumpeshvara even once is freed from all sins; even worshipped once, it burns away sin accumulated over seven births.
Verse 40 (skanda.5.112.40)
ityuktvā munayaḥ sarve pūjayāmāsuranvitāḥ| kuṣṭharogavinirmukto rājā svaviṣayaṁ gataḥ||
Having said this, all the sages, joyfully, worshipped him; freed from leprosy, the king went to his own kingdom.
Verse 41 (skanda.5.112.41)
eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| lumpeśvarasya devasya śṛṇu gaṁgeśvaraṁ param||
O Devi, this sin-destroying power of the God Lumpeshvara has been told to you; now hear next of Gangeshvara.
