The Glory of Angareshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.5.114.1)

श्रीशिव उवाच। चत्वारिंशत्तमं विद्धि त्र्यधिकं पर्वतात्मजे। यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण जायते सर्वसंपदः॥

śrīśiva uvāca| catvāriṁśattamaṁ viddhi tryadhikaṁ parvatātmaje| yasya darśanamātreṇa jāyate sarvasaṁpadaḥ||

Shri Shiva said: Know the forty-third, O daughter of the mountain, by the mere sight of whom all prosperity is born.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.114.2)

आदिकल्पे पुरा जातो वक्रांगो लोहितच्छविः। रौद्रस्त्वंगारसदृशो मम गात्राद्वरानने। मया धृतो धरण्यां स विख्यातो भूमिपुत्रकः॥

ādikalpe purā jāto vakrāṁgo lohitacchaviḥ| raudrastvaṁgārasadṛśo mama gātrādvarānane| mayā dhṛto dharaṇyāṁ sa vikhyāto bhūmiputrakaḥ||

In the first kalpa, formerly, O fair-faced one, there was born from my body a crooked-limbed one, red in hue, terrible, like a glowing ember; held by me upon the earth, he became known as the son of the Earth.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.114.3)

जातमात्रे सुते तस्मिन्महाकाये भयावहे। कंपिता धरणी देवी देवास्त्रस्ताः सवासवाः॥

jātamātre sute tasminmahākāye bhayāvahe| kaṁpitā dharaṇī devī devāstrastāḥ savāsavāḥ||

The moment that son was born, huge of body and fearsome, the goddess earth trembled, and the gods, together with Vasava, were terrified.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.114.4)

क्षोभं गताः समुद्राश्च चेलुश्च धरणीधराः। तेनैव पीडितं सर्वं सदेवासुरमानुषम्॥

kṣobhaṁ gatāḥ samudrāśca celuśca dharaṇīdharāḥ| tenaiva pīḍitaṁ sarvaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam||

The oceans became agitated, and the mountains shook; by him alone all beings — gods, asuras and men — were afflicted.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.114.5)

ऋषयो वालखिल्याश्च देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः। बृहस्पतिं पुरस्कृत्य ब्रह्मलोकं गताः प्रिये॥

ṛṣayo vālakhilyāśca devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ| bṛhaspatiṁ puraskṛtya brahmalokaṁ gatāḥ priye||

The sages, and the Valakhilyas, and the gods headed by Shakra, with Brihaspati in the lead, went, O beloved, to the world of Brahma.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.114.6)

सोच्छ्वाँसाः कथयामासुर्नमस्कृत्य पितामहम्। वृत्तांतं विस्तरात्सर्वं लोकत्रयविनाशनम्॥

socchvā̃sāḥ kathayāmāsurnamaskṛtya pitāmaham| vṛttāṁtaṁ vistarātsarvaṁ lokatrayavināśanam||

Sighing, they told the grandsire, having bowed to him, the entire account in detail, of the destruction of the three worlds.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.114.7)

हरगात्रोद्भवेनैव जातमात्रेण लीलया। लोकत्रयं समाक्रांतं पीडितं भक्षितं तथा॥

haragātrodbhavenaiva jātamātreṇa līlayā| lokatrayaṁ samākrāṁtaṁ pīḍitaṁ bhakṣitaṁ tathā||

"Born merely of playful sport from Hara's body, the very moment he was born, the three worlds were overrun, afflicted, and even devoured."

Verse 8 (skanda.5.114.8)

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तेषां ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः। चिंतयित्वा तु तैः सार्द्धमाजगाम ममांतिकम्॥

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ teṣāṁ brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ| ciṁtayitvā tu taiḥ sārddhamājagāma mamāṁtikam||

Hearing their words, Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, having reflected, came together with them to my presence.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.114.9)

मया पृष्टास्तु ते सर्वे किमर्थं भयविह्वलाः। सोच्छ्वासहृदया दीनाः कस्माद्वो भयमागतम्॥

mayā pṛṣṭāstu te sarve kimarthaṁ bhayavihvalāḥ| socchvāsahṛdayā dīnāḥ kasmādvo bhayamāgatam||

They were all asked by me: "Why are you overwhelmed with fear? Your hearts are sighing and wretched — from what has your fear arisen?"

Verse 10 (skanda.5.114.10)

तैः सर्वं कथितं देवि ममाग्रे भयविह्वलैः। त्वदंगसंभवेनैव देवदेव जगत्पते। पीडितं भक्षितं चैव सदेवासुरमानवम्॥

taiḥ sarvaṁ kathitaṁ devi mamāgre bhayavihvalaiḥ| tvadaṁgasaṁbhavenaiva devadeva jagatpate| pīḍitaṁ bhakṣitaṁ caiva sadevāsuramānavam||

All was told to me, O Devi, by them, overwhelmed with fear: "O God of gods, lord of the world, from your own body's offspring, all beings — gods, asuras and men — have been afflicted and devoured."

Verse 11 (skanda.5.114.11)

इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा क्षेमार्थं कृपया मया। आकारितो मत्समीपमुवाच वदतां वरः॥

iti teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā kṣemārthaṁ kṛpayā mayā| ākārito matsamīpamuvāca vadatāṁ varaḥ||

Hearing their words, out of compassion, for the sake of their welfare, I summoned him to my presence; he, best of speakers, said:

Verse 12 (skanda.5.114.12)

आदेशो दीयतां देव किं करोमीत्युवाच सः। नाकर्ष त्वं जगदिदं मया प्रोक्तः पुनःपुनः॥

ādeśo dīyatāṁ deva kiṁ karomītyuvāca saḥ| nākarṣa tvaṁ jagadidaṁ mayā proktaḥ punaḥpunaḥ||

"Let a command be given, O God; what shall I do?" — thus he spoke. "You should not devastate this world" — I said to him again and again.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.114.13)

ममांगाद्रजसा जातस्तेनांगारक उच्यसे। लोकानां स्वस्तये नित्यं मंगलोसि मया कृतः॥

mamāṁgādrajasā jātastenāṁgāraka ucyase| lokānāṁ svastaye nityaṁ maṁgalosi mayā kṛtaḥ||

"Born from my body, from its dust, you are therefore called Angaraka, the ember-born; made auspicious by me for the eternal welfare of the worlds,"

Verse 14 (skanda.5.114.14)

इदानीं वक्रतां यातो वक्रस्त्वं गीयसे बुधैः। विज्ञप्तोऽहं तदा तेन मम वाक्यं श्रुतं यदा। आहारेण विना देव कथं तृप्तिर्भविष्यति॥

idānīṁ vakratāṁ yāto vakrastvaṁ gīyase budhaiḥ| vijñapto'haṁ tadā tena mama vākyaṁ śrutaṁ yadā| āhāreṇa vinā deva kathaṁ tṛptirbhaviṣyati||

"now, having become crooked in form, you are extolled by the wise as Vakra." I was then petitioned by him, when my words had been heard: "O God, without food, how shall satisfaction come to me?"

Verse 15 (skanda.5.114.15)

तस्मान्मे देहि सुस्थानमाधिपत्यं च देहि मे। शक्तिं च देहि मे शीघ्रमाहारं देहि मे प्रभो॥

tasmānme dehi susthānamādhipatyaṁ ca dehi me| śaktiṁ ca dehi me śīghramāhāraṁ dehi me prabho||

"Therefore give me a good abode, and give me lordship; give me strength, and give me food quickly, O Lord."

Verse 16 (skanda.5.114.16)

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पुत्रोऽयं मम वल्लभः। तस्माद्दास्यामि परमं स्थानमक्षयमुत्तमम्॥

tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā putro'yaṁ mama vallabhaḥ| tasmāddāsyāmi paramaṁ sthānamakṣayamuttamam||

Hearing his words, I thought: "This son is dear to me; therefore I shall give him a supreme, imperishable, excellent abode" —

Verse 17 (skanda.5.114.17)

इति संचिन्त्य मनसा स्मृतं स्थानं मयोत्तमम्। उत्संगे च सुतं कृत्वा प्रेम्णा प्रोक्तं पुनःपुनः॥

iti saṁcintya manasā smṛtaṁ sthānaṁ mayottamam| utsaṁge ca sutaṁ kṛtvā premṇā proktaṁ punaḥpunaḥ||

reflecting thus in my mind, an excellent place was recalled by me; and, placing my son upon my lap, I said to him again and again with love:

Verse 18 (skanda.5.114.18)

दत्तं पुत्र मया स्थानं महाकालवनोत्तमे। गंगेश्वरस्य पूर्वे तु प्रशस्यं स्थानमुत्तमम्॥

dattaṁ putra mayā sthānaṁ mahākālavanottame| gaṁgeśvarasya pūrve tu praśasyaṁ sthānamuttamam||

"A place has been given by me to you, my son, in the excellent Mahakala forest — east of Gangeshvara, an excellent and praiseworthy place;"

Verse 19 (skanda.5.114.19)

खगर्ता चैव शिप्रा च संगमस्तत्र विद्यते॥

khagartā caiva śiprā ca saṁgamastatra vidyate||

"there exists the confluence of Khagarta and Shipra."

Verse 20 (skanda.5.114.20)

यदा मया धृता गंगा तदा सा चन्द्रमण्डलात्। प्रमादात्पतिता भूमौ महाकालवनोत्तमे॥

yadā mayā dhṛtā gaṁgā tadā sā candramaṇḍalāt| pramādātpatitā bhūmau mahākālavanottame||

"When Ganga was held by me, she, by accident, fell from the disc of the moon to the ground, in the excellent Mahakala forest —"

Verse 21 (skanda.5.114.21)

खगर्तेति च विख्याता खाद्भ्रष्टा प्रापतत्क्षितौ। अतो मयावतारस्तु सहसा तव वै कृतः॥

khagarteti ca vikhyātā khādbhraṣṭā prāpatatkṣitau| ato mayāvatārastu sahasā tava vai kṛtaḥ||

"known as Khagarta, 'fallen from the sky,' she fell upon the earth; therefore an incarnation of yours has now suddenly been made there."

Verse 22 (skanda.5.114.22)

लिंगमूर्तिरहं पुत्र तिष्ठामि सुरपूजितः। तत्स्थानं दुर्लभं देवैस्तस्मात्त्वं गच्छ सत्वरम्॥

liṁgamūrtirahaṁ putra tiṣṭhāmi surapūjitaḥ| tatsthānaṁ durlabhaṁ devaistasmāttvaṁ gaccha satvaram||

"In the form of a linga, my son, I remain there, worshipped by the gods; that place is difficult even for the gods to attain; therefore go there swiftly."

Verse 23 (skanda.5.114.23)

पूजितोऽहं त्वया तत्र संगमे लोकपूजिते। त्रिषु लोकेषु यास्यामि ख्यातिं वै तव नामतः॥

pūjito'haṁ tvayā tatra saṁgame lokapūjite| triṣu lokeṣu yāsyāmi khyātiṁ vai tava nāmataḥ||

"Worshipped by you there, at that world-worshipped confluence, I shall attain renown in the three worlds by your very name."

Verse 24 (skanda.5.114.24)

मध्ये ग्रहाणां सर्वेषामाधिपत्यं मया तव। दत्तं तृतीयकं स्थानं तत्र तृप्तिर्भविष्यति॥

madhye grahāṇāṁ sarveṣāmādhipatyaṁ mayā tava| dattaṁ tṛtīyakaṁ sthānaṁ tatra tṛptirbhaviṣyati||

"Among all the planets I have given you lordship in their midst; a third station has been given, in which satisfaction shall be yours."

Verse 25 (skanda.5.114.25)

पूजां प्राप्स्यसि तत्रैव ग्रहमध्ये व्यवस्थितः। तिथिर्दत्ता चतुर्थी ते तस्यां ये व्रततत्पराः॥

pūjāṁ prāpsyasi tatraiva grahamadhye vyavasthitaḥ| tithirdattā caturthī te tasyāṁ ye vratatatparāḥ||

"You shall receive worship there itself, established in the midst of the planets; the fourth lunar day has been given to you — on it, those devoted to their vows,"

Verse 26 (skanda.5.114.26)

त्वामुद्दिश्य करिष्यंति पूजां शांतिं सदक्षिणाम्। तेन सर्वेण ते तृप्तिर्भविष्यति न संशयः॥

tvāmuddiśya kariṣyaṁti pūjāṁ śāṁtiṁ sadakṣiṇām| tena sarveṇa te tṛptirbhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ||

"directed toward you, shall perform worship and appeasement rites with due offerings; by all of that, satisfaction shall be yours without doubt."

Verse 27 (skanda.5.114.27)

वारश्चैकश्च ते दत्तो मंगलार्थं मया तव। नववस्त्रपरीधानं विद्यारंभं दिने तव। तैलाभ्यंगं करिष्यंति न च प्राप्स्यंति ते बलम्॥

vāraścaikaśca te datto maṁgalārthaṁ mayā tava| navavastraparīdhānaṁ vidyāraṁbhaṁ dine tava| tailābhyaṁgaṁ kariṣyaṁti na ca prāpsyaṁti te balam||

"And one day of the week has been given to you by me for auspiciousness; on your day, they shall don new garments, begin their studies, and perform an oil-anointing — and they shall not incur your severity."

Verse 28 (skanda.5.114.28)

इत्युक्तस्तु मया देवि वक्रांगो मंगलः सुतः। अंगारकेति विख्यातस्तथेत्यंगीचकार सः॥

ityuktastu mayā devi vakrāṁgo maṁgalaḥ sutaḥ| aṁgāraketi vikhyātastathetyaṁgīcakāra saḥ||

Thus addressed by me, O Devi, that crooked-limbed son, Mangala, became renowned as Angaraka; he accepted, saying "so be it."

Verse 29 (skanda.5.114.29)

सन्तुष्टस्तेन वाक्येन मदीयेन वरानने। आजगाम मुदा युक्तो महाकालवनोत्तमे॥

santuṣṭastena vākyena madīyena varānane| ājagāma mudā yukto mahākālavanottame||

Pleased by these words of mine, O wide-eyed one, he came joyfully to the excellent Mahakala forest.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.114.30)

शिप्रायाश्च तटे रम्ये खगर्त्तासंगमांतिकम्। दृष्टोऽहं लिंगरूपेण परां तुष्टिमुपागतः॥

śiprāyāśca taṭe ramye khagarttāsaṁgamāṁtikam| dṛṣṭo'haṁ liṁgarūpeṇa parāṁ tuṣṭimupāgataḥ||

On the lovely bank of the Shipra, near the confluence with the Khagarta, he beheld me in the form of the linga, and attained supreme satisfaction.

Verse 31 (skanda.5.114.31)

मया चालिंगितः प्रेम्णा चुम्बितः शिरसि प्रिये। वरो दत्तो विशालाक्षि वांछितं ते भविष्यति॥

mayā cāliṁgitaḥ premṇā cumbitaḥ śirasi priye| varo datto viśālākṣi vāṁchitaṁ te bhaviṣyati||

Embraced by me with love, kissed on the head, O beloved — "A boon is given, O wide-eyed one; your desire shall be fulfilled."

Verse 32 (skanda.5.114.32)

दृष्टोऽहं च त्वया पुत्र भक्त्या चाराधितस्त्वया। मम वाक्यं कृतं यस्मात्तस्मात्तुष्टोऽस्मि मंगल॥

dṛṣṭo'haṁ ca tvayā putra bhaktyā cārādhitastvayā| mama vākyaṁ kṛtaṁ yasmāttasmāttuṣṭo'smi maṁgala||

"You have seen me, my son, and worshipped me with devotion; since my word has been fulfilled, I am pleased, O Mangala."

Verse 33 (skanda.5.114.33)

अंगारेश्वरनामाहमद्यप्रभृति पुत्रक। त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्यातो भविष्यामि न संशयः॥

aṁgāreśvaranāmāhamadyaprabhṛti putraka| triṣu lokeṣu vikhyāto bhaviṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ||

"From this day, my son, I shall bear the name Angareshvara; I shall become renowned in the three worlds — there is no doubt of it."

Verse 34 (skanda.5.114.34)

ये मां पश्यंति सततं संगमेऽत्र व्यवस्थितम्। न तेषां पुनरावृत्तिर्भविष्यति महीतले॥

ye māṁ paśyaṁti satataṁ saṁgame'tra vyavasthitam| na teṣāṁ punarāvṛttirbhaviṣyati mahītale||

"Those who continually behold me, established here at the confluence, for them there shall be no return again upon the earth."

Verse 35 (skanda.5.114.35)

ये मां संपूजयिष्यंति ह्यंगारकदिने नराः। कलौ युगे कृतार्थास्ते भविष्यंति न संशयः॥

ye māṁ saṁpūjayiṣyaṁti hyaṁgārakadine narāḥ| kalau yuge kṛtārthāste bhaviṣyaṁti na saṁśayaḥ||

"Those men who will worship me on the day of Angaraka, in the Kali age, shall become fulfilled — there is no doubt of it."

Verse 36 (skanda.5.114.36)

चतुर्थ्यां मंगलदिने ये मां पश्यंति सुव्रताः। न ते यास्यंति संसारे घोरे दुःखशताकुले॥

caturthyāṁ maṁgaladine ye māṁ paśyaṁti suvratāḥ| na te yāsyaṁti saṁsāre ghore duḥkhaśatākule||

"Those observant of good vows who behold me on the fourth day, on Tuesday, shall not go into the terrible world of existence crowded with a hundred sorrows."

Verse 37 (skanda.5.114.37)

अमावास्या च भौमश्च संयोगो दृश्यते यदा। खगर्त्तायाश्च शिप्रायाः संगमे देवपूजिते॥

amāvāsyā ca bhaumaśca saṁyogo dṛśyate yadā| khagarttāyāśca śiprāyāḥ saṁgame devapūjite||

"When the new-moon and Tuesday coincide, at the god-worshipped confluence of the Khagarta and the Shipra,"

Verse 38 (skanda.5.114.38)

स्नात्वा तदा प्रपश्यंति मामत्रैव व्यवस्थितम्। तेषां पुण्यफलं देवि समासाच्छृणु सांप्रतम्॥

snātvā tadā prapaśyaṁti māmatraiva vyavasthitam| teṣāṁ puṇyaphalaṁ devi samāsācchṛṇu sāṁpratam||

"having bathed then, they behold me established right there; their meritorious fruit, O Devi, hear now in brief."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.114.39)

वाराणस्यां प्रयागे च कुरुक्षेत्रे च यत्फलम्। गयायां पुष्करे प्रोक्तं तत्पुण्यमधिकं भवेत्॥

vārāṇasyāṁ prayāge ca kurukṣetre ca yatphalam| gayāyāṁ puṣkare proktaṁ tatpuṇyamadhikaṁ bhavet||

"The fruit declared for Varanasi, for Prayaga, and for Kurukshetra, for Gaya and Pushkara — that merit becomes even greater here."

Verse 40 (skanda.5.114.40)

एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। अंगारेश्वरदेवस्य श्रूयतामुत्तरेश्वरम्॥

eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| aṁgāreśvaradevasya śrūyatāmuttareśvaram||

O Devi, this sin-destroying power of the God Angareshvara has been told to you; now hear of Uttareshvara.
