The Glory of Shitala

Verse 1 (skanda.5.12.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। उत्तरे तु प्रवक्ष्यामि मर्कटेश्वरमुत्तमम्। तत्र तीर्थं च विख्यातं सर्वकामप्रदायकम्

sanatkumāra uvāca| uttare tu pravakṣyāmi markaṭeśvaramuttamam| tatra tīrthaṁ ca vikhyātaṁ sarvakāmapradāyakam

Sanatkumara said: To the north I shall now declare the excellent Markateshvara; there is a renowned tirtha there, the granter of every desire.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.12.2)

तस्मिंस्तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा गोशतस्य फलं लभेत्। विस्फोटानां प्रशांत्यर्थं बालानां चैव कारणे

tasmiṁstīrthe naraḥ snātvā gośatasya phalaṁ labhet| visphoṭānāṁ praśāṁtyarthaṁ bālānāṁ caiva kāraṇe

A man who bathes in that tirtha obtains the merit of the gift of a hundred cows; for the pacifying of pox-eruptions, and for the sake of children...

Verse 3 (skanda.5.12.3)

मापेन मापितान्कृत्वा मसूरांस्तत्र कुट्टयेत्। शीतलायाः प्रभावेन बालाः संतु निरामयाः

māpena māpitānkṛtvā masūrāṁstatra kuṭṭayet| śītalāyāḥ prabhāvena bālāḥ saṁtu nirāmayāḥ

...lentils, carefully measured out, should be pounded there; by the power of Shitala, may the children be free of illness.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.12.4)

ये पश्यंति नरा भक्त्या शीतलां दुरितापहाम्। न तेषां दुष्कृतं किंचिन्न दारिद्र्यं द्विजोत्तम

ye paśyaṁti narā bhaktyā śītalāṁ duritāpahām| na teṣāṁ duṣkṛtaṁ kiṁcinna dāridryaṁ dvijottama

O foremost of the twice-born, those men who behold Shitala, remover of misfortune, with devotion, have for them neither any evil deed nor poverty.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.12.5)

न च रोगभयं तेषां ग्रहपीडा तथैव च

na ca rogabhayaṁ teṣāṁ grahapīḍā tathaiva ca

Nor is there for them any fear of disease, nor likewise any affliction from the planets.
