Verse 1 (skanda.5.127.1)

श्रीमहादेव उवाच। षट्पंचाशत्तमं विद्धि रेवंतेश्वरसंज्ञकम्। यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण परा सिद्धिः प्रजायते॥

śrīmahādeva uvāca| ṣaṭpaṁcāśattamaṁ viddhi revaṁteśvarasaṁjñakam| yasya darśanamātreṇa parā siddhiḥ prajāyate||

Shri Mahadeva said: "Know the fifty-sixth, called Revanteshvara, by the mere sight of whom supreme accomplishment is born."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.127.2)

असहंती पुरा संज्ञा रवेस्तेजोऽतिदुःसहम्। तपः कर्त्तुं गता देवि ज्ञाता सूर्येण सुव्रता॥

asahaṁtī purā saṁjñā ravestejo'tiduḥsaham| tapaḥ karttuṁ gatā devi jñātā sūryeṇa suvratā||

"Formerly, O Devi, Sanjna, unable to bear the exceedingly unbearable splendor of Surya, went to perform austerity; she of good vows was found out by Surya."

Verse 3 (skanda.5.127.3)

अश्वरूपं ततः कृत्वा जगामाथोत्तरान्कुरून्। ददृशे तत्र संज्ञां च वडवारूपधारिणीम्॥

aśvarūpaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā jagāmāthottarānkurūn| dadṛśe tatra saṁjñāṁ ca vaḍavārūpadhāriṇīm||

"He then, assuming the form of a horse, went to Uttara Kuru; there he beheld Sanjna, who had taken the form of a mare."

Verse 4 (skanda.5.127.4)

गता सा सम्मुखं तस्य पृष्ठरक्षणतत्परा। ततोभून्नासिकायोगस्तयोस्तत्र समेतयोः॥

gatā sā sammukhaṁ tasya pṛṣṭharakṣaṇatatparā| tatobhūnnāsikāyogastayostatra sametayoḥ||

"She, intent on protecting her hindquarters [modesty], went to face him; then there occurred between the two, thus met, a joining of noses."

Verse 5 (skanda.5.127.5)

नासत्य दस्रौ तनयावश्ववक्त्रौ विनिर्गतौ। रेतसोंऽते च रेवंतः खड्गी चर्मी तनुत्रधृक्॥

nāsatya dasrau tanayāvaśvavaktrau vinirgatau| retasoṁ'te ca revaṁtaḥ khaḍgī carmī tanutradhṛk||

"The two sons Nasatya and Dasra, horse-faced, were born forth; and at the end, from the seed [that fell], Revanta was born, bearing sword, shield, and armor."

Verse 6 (skanda.5.127.6)

अश्वारूढः समुद्भूतस्ततो बाणधनुर्द्धरः। तेन वै जातमात्रेण अश्वारूढेन लीलया। निर्जितं च जगच्चेदं सदेवासुरमानुषम्॥

aśvārūḍhaḥ samudbhūtastato bāṇadhanurddharaḥ| tena vai jātamātreṇa aśvārūḍhena līlayā| nirjitaṁ ca jagaccedaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam||

"He came into being mounted upon a horse, bearing bow and arrow; by him, the very moment he was born, mounted on his horse, in sport, this world was conquered — together with gods, asuras, and men."

Verse 7 (skanda.5.127.7)

ततो देवाः पराभूता ब्रह्माणं शरणं गताः। प्रणम्य कथयामासुर्भयकंपितकं धराः॥

tato devāḥ parābhūtā brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ| praṇamya kathayāmāsurbhayakaṁpitakaṁ dharāḥ||

"Then the gods, overpowered, went for refuge to Brahma; bowing to him, trembling with fear, those upholders [of the world] spoke."

Verse 8 (skanda.5.127.8)

अस्माकं विभवं तेजो रविपुत्रेण नाशितम्। रेवंतेन सुरेंद्रेण शृणु लोकपितामह॥

asmākaṁ vibhavaṁ tejo raviputreṇa nāśitam| revaṁtena sureṁdreṇa śṛṇu lokapitāmaha||

"'Our splendor and power has been destroyed by the son of Surya, by the mighty Revanta — hear, O grandsire of the worlds!'"

Verse 9 (skanda.5.127.9)

तस्य गात्रसमुद्भूतो वह्निर्धावति काल जित्। ज्वलंति पादपास्तेन पतंति शिखराणि च॥

tasya gātrasamudbhūto vahnirdhāvati kāla jit| jvalaṁti pādapāstena pataṁti śikharāṇi ca||

"'The fire born from his body, conqueror of death, races about; by it trees blaze up and mountain-peaks fall.'"

Verse 10 (skanda.5.127.10)

सर्वतो व्याकुलीभूतं हाहाकारमचेतनम्। तेनैव पीडितं सर्वं ज्वालामालासमाकुलम्॥

sarvato vyākulībhūtaṁ hāhākāramacetanam| tenaiva pīḍitaṁ sarvaṁ jvālāmālāsamākulam||

"'Everything everywhere has become distraught, senseless, crying out in lamentation; all is afflicted by that very fire, filled with garlands of flame.'"

Verse 11 (skanda.5.127.11)

दशदिक्षु प्रवृत्तोऽयं समृद्धो हव्यवाहनः। सर्वं किंशुकसंकाशं प्रज्वलन्निव दृश्यते॥

daśadikṣu pravṛtto'yaṁ samṛddho havyavāhanaḥ| sarvaṁ kiṁśukasaṁkāśaṁ prajvalanniva dṛśyate||

"'This blazing fire, grown mighty, has spread in the ten directions; everything appears as if aflame, resembling the kimshuka flower.'"

Verse 12 (skanda.5.127.12)

इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा ब्रह्मणोक्तं वरानने। ज्ञातं मया सुरश्रेष्ठा भवतां कार्यमीदृशम्॥

iti teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā brahmaṇoktaṁ varānane| jñātaṁ mayā suraśreṣṭhā bhavatāṁ kāryamīdṛśam||

"Having heard their words, O fair one, Brahma said: 'I have understood, O best of gods, this task of yours.'"

Verse 13 (skanda.5.127.13)

भविष्यति च वस्तच्च कांक्षितं यत्सुरोत्तमाः। गच्छध्वं सहसा तस्माच्छंकरं शरणं सुराः॥

bhaviṣyati ca vastacca kāṁkṣitaṁ yatsurottamāḥ| gacchadhvaṁ sahasā tasmācchaṁkaraṁ śaraṇaṁ surāḥ||

"'And that which you desire, O best of gods, shall come to pass. Therefore go at once, O gods, and take refuge in Shankara.'"

Verse 14 (skanda.5.127.14)

ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा ममांतिकमुपागताः। त्रिदशा भयसंत्रस्ता नत्वा मामि दमब्रुवन्॥

brahmaṇo vacanaṁ śrutvā mamāṁtikamupāgatāḥ| tridaśā bhayasaṁtrastā natvā māmi damabruvan||

"Having heard Brahma's words, the thirty gods, terrified with fear, came to my presence; bowing to me, they spoke thus."

Verse 15 (skanda.5.127.15)

आदित्यतनयेनैव रेवंतेन महेश्वर। दग्धं त्रिभुवनं सर्वं शरीरस्थेन वह्निना। तेजसा महता चैव विक्रमेण बलेन च॥

ādityatanayenaiva revaṁtena maheśvara| dagdhaṁ tribhuvanaṁ sarvaṁ śarīrasthena vahninā| tejasā mahatā caiva vikrameṇa balena ca||

"'O Maheshvara! By Revanta, son of Aditya, the entire three worlds have been burnt by the fire dwelling in his body, by his great splendor, valor, and strength.'"

Verse 16 (skanda.5.127.16)

असाध्यः किल सोऽस्माकं सर्वेषां देवसत्तम। भवान्प्रभवते तस्य नान्यः शंकर कश्चन॥

asādhyaḥ kila so'smākaṁ sarveṣāṁ devasattama| bhavānprabhavate tasya nānyaḥ śaṁkara kaścana||

"'He is indeed unconquerable by all of us, O best of gods; you alone have power over him, O Shankara — none other.'"

Verse 17 (skanda.5.127.17)

त्वां प्रपद्यामहे सर्वे भयार्त्ताः शरणार्थिनः। शरणं वरदं देवं त्रिदशानां महेश्वर॥

tvāṁ prapadyāmahe sarve bhayārttāḥ śaraṇārthinaḥ| śaraṇaṁ varadaṁ devaṁ tridaśānāṁ maheśvara||

"'We all, distressed with fear, seeking refuge, take refuge in you, O Maheshvara, the boon-giving god and shelter of the thirty gods.'"

Verse 18 (skanda.5.127.18)

मया स्मृतः सूर्यपुत्रो रेवंतस्तत्क्षणात्प्रिये। प्राप्तः प्रीतिप्रसन्नात्मा वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्॥

mayā smṛtaḥ sūryaputro revaṁtastatkṣaṇātpriye| prāptaḥ prītiprasannātmā vacanaṁ cedamabravīt||

"Remembered by me, O dear one, the son of Surya, Revanta, arrived that very instant, his heart pleased and gracious, and spoke these words."

Verse 19 (skanda.5.127.19)

किं मया देव कर्त्तव्यं ब्रूहि सर्वमशेषतः। ततो मया सूर्यपुत्र उत्संगे च कृतस्तदा॥

kiṁ mayā deva karttavyaṁ brūhi sarvamaśeṣataḥ| tato mayā sūryaputra utsaṁge ca kṛtastadā||

"'What is to be done by me, O god? Tell me everything, fully.' Then I took the son of Surya upon my lap,"

Verse 20 (skanda.5.127.20)

स्नेहादाचुंबितो मूर्ध्नि परिष्वक्तः पुनःपुनः। ददामि ते महाभाग वरं वरय सुव्रत॥

snehādācuṁbito mūrdhni pariṣvaktaḥ punaḥpunaḥ| dadāmi te mahābhāga varaṁ varaya suvrata||

"—kissed him on the head out of affection, embraced him again and again: 'I grant you a boon, O most fortunate one; choose, O one of firm vows.'"

Verse 21 (skanda.5.127.21)

परितुष्टोस्मि ते कामं यथेष्टं काममाप्नुहि। इदमाज्ञापयामि त्वां श्रेयश्चैवमवाप्स्यसि॥

parituṣṭosmi te kāmaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ kāmamāpnuhi| idamājñāpayāmi tvāṁ śreyaścaivamavāpsyasi||

"'I am well pleased; obtain your desire as you wish. This I command you, and thereby you shall attain good fortune.'"

Verse 22 (skanda.5.127.22)

ममाभीष्टं परं स्थानं विद्यते पृथिवीतले। अक्षयं प्रलये पुत्र महाकालवनं शुभम्। तत्र दास्यामि ते स्थानं तत्र कीर्त्तिर्भविप्यति॥

mamābhīṣṭaṁ paraṁ sthānaṁ vidyate pṛthivītale| akṣayaṁ pralaye putra mahākālavanaṁ śubham| tatra dāsyāmi te sthānaṁ tatra kīrttirbhavipyati||

"'There exists on the surface of the earth my most cherished supreme abode, imperishable even at the dissolution [of the world], O son — the auspicious Mahakalavana; there I shall give you a place, and there your fame shall arise.'"

Verse 23 (skanda.5.127.23)

पूर्वे कंटेश्वरस्यापि स्थानं परमदुर्ल्भम्। तत्र त्वं वस रेवंत लिंगं द्रक्ष्यसि शाश्वतम्॥

pūrve kaṁṭeśvarasyāpi sthānaṁ paramadurlbham| tatra tvaṁ vasa revaṁta liṁgaṁ drakṣyasi śāśvatam||

"'To the east is also the most rare abode of Kanteshvara; dwell you there, O Revanta — you shall behold an eternal linga.'"

Verse 24 (skanda.5.127.24)

सर्वदा त्रिदशैः पूज्यो भविष्यसि न संशयः। गुह्यकाधिपतिस्त्वं च स्वर्गलोके भविष्यसि॥

sarvadā tridaśaiḥ pūjyo bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ| guhyakādhipatistvaṁ ca svargaloke bhaviṣyasi||

"'You shall be forever worshipped by the thirty gods, without doubt; you shall become the lord of the guhyakas in the world of heaven.'"

Verse 25 (skanda.5.127.25)

अश्वशालासु सर्वासु पूजनीयो भविष्यसि। नृपतीनां गृहे चैव वसिष्यसि सुपूजितः॥

aśvaśālāsu sarvāsu pūjanīyo bhaviṣyasi| nṛpatīnāṁ gṛhe caiva vasiṣyasi supūjitaḥ||

"'You shall be worthy of worship in all stables; and you shall dwell, well honored, in the houses of kings.'"

Verse 26 (skanda.5.127.26)

तेजो मदीयं तत्स्थानं लिंगाकारं सनातनम्। पूजितं त्रिदशैस्तत्र संसेव्यं यत्नतस्त्वया॥

tejo madīyaṁ tatsthānaṁ liṁgākāraṁ sanātanam| pūjitaṁ tridaśaistatra saṁsevyaṁ yatnatastvayā||

"'That place is my own splendor, of eternal linga-form; worshipped there by the thirty gods, it should be devotedly served by you.'"

Verse 27 (skanda.5.127.27)

एवमुक्तो मया देवि रेवंतो रविजस्तदा। जगामाकाशमाविश्य महाकालवनं क्षणात्॥

evamukto mayā devi revaṁto ravijastadā| jagāmākāśamāviśya mahākālavanaṁ kṣaṇāt||

"Thus addressed by me, O Devi, Revanta, son of the sun, then entered the sky and went to Mahakalavana in an instant."

Verse 28 (skanda.5.127.28)

ददर्श तत्र तल्लिंगं ज्योतीरूपं सनातनम्। सूर्यपुत्रस्तु रेवंतो दृष्टो लिंगेन पार्वति॥

dadarśa tatra talliṁgaṁ jyotīrūpaṁ sanātanam| sūryaputrastu revaṁto dṛṣṭo liṁgena pārvati||

"There he beheld that linga, of eternal, luminous form; and Revanta, son of Surya, was beheld by the linga, O Parvati."

Verse 29 (skanda.5.127.29)

प्रोक्तः प्रणयपूर्वेण दिष्ट्या दृष्टोऽसि सूर्यज। अद्यप्रभृति ते नाम्ना ख्यातिं यास्यामि भूतले॥

proktaḥ praṇayapūrveṇa diṣṭyā dṛṣṭo'si sūryaja| adyaprabhṛti te nāmnā khyātiṁ yāsyāmi bhūtale||

"He was addressed with affection: 'By good fortune have you been seen, O son of Surya! From today, by your name, I shall attain renown on earth.'"

Verse 30 (skanda.5.127.30)

स्थातव्यं मत्समीपे तु सूर्यपुत्र त्वया सदा। अक्षया भविता कीर्त्तिस्त्वदीया भुवनत्रये॥

sthātavyaṁ matsamīpe tu sūryaputra tvayā sadā| akṣayā bhavitā kīrttistvadīyā bhuvanatraye||

"'You must dwell forever near me, O son of Surya; your fame shall be imperishable in the three worlds.'"

Verse 31 (skanda.5.127.31)

रेवंतेश्वरसंज्ञोऽहं भविष्यामि न संशयः। ये मां द्रक्ष्यंति रेवंत भक्त्या परमया युताः। तेषामश्वा भविष्यंति विजयो यश ऊर्जितम्॥

revaṁteśvarasaṁjño'haṁ bhaviṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ| ye māṁ drakṣyaṁti revaṁta bhaktyā paramayā yutāḥ| teṣāmaśvā bhaviṣyaṁti vijayo yaśa ūrjitam||

"'I shall become known by the name Revanteshvara, without doubt. Those who behold me, O Revanta, endowed with supreme devotion — their horses shall thrive, and victory and mighty fame shall be theirs.'"

Verse 32 (skanda.5.127.32)

ऐश्वर्यं दानशक्तिश्च पुत्रपौत्रमनंतकम्। गुह्यकानां पतिर्भूत्वा स्वर्गलोके स वत्स्यति॥

aiśvaryaṁ dānaśaktiśca putrapautramanaṁtakam| guhyakānāṁ patirbhūtvā svargaloke sa vatsyati||

"'—lordship, the power to give in charity, and endless sons and grandsons; having become lord of the guhyakas, he shall dwell in the world of heaven.'"

Verse 33 (skanda.5.127.33)

लिंगस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रोक्तं वै रविसूनुना। रेवंतेन विशालाक्षि संतुष्टेनांतरात्मना॥

liṁgasya vacanaṁ śrutvā proktaṁ vai ravisūnunā| revaṁtena viśālākṣi saṁtuṣṭenāṁtarātmanā||

"Having heard the words of the linga, Revanta, son of Surya, O wide-eyed one, spoke with a heart well pleased within."

Verse 34 (skanda.5.127.34)

देहि मे ह्यचला भक्तिं देहि मे स्थानमुत्तमम्। देहि मे परमं ज्ञानं ध्रुवां कीर्तिं च देहि मे॥

dehi me hyacalā bhaktiṁ dehi me sthānamuttamam| dehi me paramaṁ jñānaṁ dhruvāṁ kīrtiṁ ca dehi me||

"'Grant me unwavering devotion, grant me this excellent abode; grant me supreme knowledge, and grant me lasting fame.'"

Verse 35 (skanda.5.127.35)

भगवन्भूतभव्येश भवबंधभयापह। संस्कृतार्थोऽस्मि संजातस्तव देवस्य दर्शनात्॥

bhagavanbhūtabhavyeśa bhavabaṁdhabhayāpaha| saṁskṛtārtho'smi saṁjātastava devasya darśanāt||

"'O Lord, master of past and future, remover of the fear of worldly bondage! I have become fulfilled in purpose, having attained sight of you, the god.'"

Verse 36 (skanda.5.127.36)

जन्मकोटिसुसंशुद्धा ये त्वां पश्यंति देहिनः। न तेषां पुनरावृत्तिर्घोरसंसारसागरे॥

janmakoṭisusaṁśuddhā ye tvāṁ paśyaṁti dehinaḥ| na teṣāṁ punarāvṛttirghorasaṁsārasāgare||

"'Those embodied beings, purified through crores of births, who behold you — for them there is no return into the terrible ocean of samsara.'"

Verse 37 (skanda.5.127.37)

इत्युक्त्वा रविसूनुर्वै रेवंतो रविवल्लभः। रेवंतेश्वरदेवस्य समीपे संव्यवस्थितः॥

ityuktvā ravisūnurvai revaṁto ravivallabhaḥ| revaṁteśvaradevasya samīpe saṁvyavasthitaḥ||

"Having spoken thus, Revanta, son of Surya, beloved of Ravi [Surya], took up his abode near the god Revanteshvara."

Verse 38 (skanda.5.127.38)

एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। रेवंतेश्वरदेवस्य घंटेश्वरमथो शृणु॥

eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| revaṁteśvaradevasya ghaṁṭeśvaramatho śṛṇu||

"This, O Devi, is the sin-destroying power of the god Revanteshvara that I have told you; now hear of Ghanteshvara."
