The Glory of Jalpeshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.5.137.1)
ईश्वर उवाच। षट्षष्टितमकं विद्धि देवं जल्पेश्वरं प्रिये। यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण महापापं शमं व्रजेत्॥
īśvara uvāca| ṣaṭṣaṣṭitamakaṁ viddhi devaṁ jalpeśvaraṁ priye| yasya darśanamātreṇa mahāpāpaṁ śamaṁ vrajet||
Ishvara said: "Know, O dear one, the sixty-sixth god, Jalpeshvara, by the mere sight of whom even great sin comes to peace."
Verse 2 (skanda.5.137.2)
जल्पोनाम महादेवि राजाभूद्भुवि विश्रुतः। सदा जल्परतो नित्यं जल्प वादप्रवर्तकः॥
jalponāma mahādevi rājābhūdbhuvi viśrutaḥ| sadā jalparato nityaṁ jalpa vādapravartakaḥ||
"O Mahadevi, there was on earth a renowned king named Jalpa, ever fond of talk, always given to disputation and debate."
Verse 3 (skanda.5.137.3)
विकल्पबहुलो नित्यं संसारगतिचिंतकः। सुबाहुप्रमुखाः पंच पुत्रा जाता महाबलाः॥
vikalpabahulo nityaṁ saṁsāragaticiṁtakaḥ| subāhupramukhāḥ paṁca putrā jātā mahābalāḥ||
"Ever full of doubt and conjecture, always pondering the course of worldly existence, he had five sons of great strength, headed by Subahu."
Verse 4 (skanda.5.137.4)
तस्य राज्ञो वरारोहे मूर्ताः पंचाग्नयो यथा। सुबाहुः शत्रुमर्द्दी च जयो विजय एव च। विक्रांतः पंचमः पुत्रः सर्वे शस्त्रास्त्रपारगाः॥
tasya rājño varārohe mūrtāḥ paṁcāgnayo yathā| subāhuḥ śatrumarddī ca jayo vijaya eva ca| vikrāṁtaḥ paṁcamaḥ putraḥ sarve śastrāstrapāragāḥ||
"O fair one, like the five sacred fires in embodied form were the sons of that king — Subahu, Shatrumardi, Jaya, and Vijaya, and Vikranta the fifth son; all were masters of weapons and missiles."
Verse 5 (skanda.5.137.5)
पित्रा जल्पेन ते राज्ञा पृथग्राज्ये प्रतिष्ठिताः। पृथक्पुत्रा हि ते सर्वे पृथग्देशाधिपाः कृताः॥
pitrā jalpena te rājñā pṛthagrājye pratiṣṭhitāḥ| pṛthakputrā hi te sarve pṛthagdeśādhipāḥ kṛtāḥ||
"By their father, King Jalpa, they were each established separately in a kingdom; each of these sons was made ruler of a separate land."
Verse 6 (skanda.5.137.6)
प्राच्यां सुबाहुर्नृपतिर्याम्यां वै शत्रुमर्दनः। पश्चिमायां जयो राजा उत्तरे विजयो नृपः॥
prācyāṁ subāhurnṛpatiryāmyāṁ vai śatrumardanaḥ| paścimāyāṁ jayo rājā uttare vijayo nṛpaḥ||
"In the east, King Subahu; in the south, Shatrumardana; in the west, King Jaya; in the north, King Vijaya."
Verse 7 (skanda.5.137.7)
मध्ये विक्रांतसंज्ञस्तु स्वपदे विनियोजितः। व्यवस्थामीदृशीं कृत्वा स्वयमेव वनं ययौ॥
madhye vikrāṁtasaṁjñastu svapade viniyojitaḥ| vyavasthāmīdṛśīṁ kṛtvā svayameva vanaṁ yayau||
"In the middle, the one named Vikranta was appointed to his own seat. Having made such an arrangement, he himself went to the forest."
Verse 8 (skanda.5.137.8)
बभूवुर्मंत्रिणस्तेषां हिता वंशक्रमागताः। बुभुजुः स्वस्वराज्यानि मंत्रिभिः सहितास्तदा॥
babhūvurmaṁtriṇasteṣāṁ hitā vaṁśakramāgatāḥ| bubhujuḥ svasvarājyāni maṁtribhiḥ sahitāstadā||
"They each had ministers, loyal, hereditary through the line of their family; and they then enjoyed their respective kingdoms together with their ministers."

विक्रांतस्य च यो मंत्री विकल्पैकपरायणः। तेनोक्तं विजने देशे विक्रांतस्य महीभृतः॥
vikrāṁtasya ca yo maṁtrī vikalpaikaparāyaṇaḥ| tenoktaṁ vijane deśe vikrāṁtasya mahībhṛtaḥ||
"Now the minister of Vikranta, who was devoted solely to doubt and disputation, said this to King Vikranta in a lonely place."
Verse 10 (skanda.5.137.10)
यस्यैषा पृथिवी कृत्स्ना स समर्थः प्रकीर्तितः। उद्यमेन पदं लब्धं वासवेन महात्मना॥
yasyaiṣā pṛthivī kṛtsnā sa samarthaḥ prakīrtitaḥ| udyamena padaṁ labdhaṁ vāsavena mahātmanā||
"'He alone is called capable to whom this entire earth belongs. It was by effort that the great Vasava obtained his place.'"
Verse 11 (skanda.5.137.11)
त्रिदशैश्चामृतं लब्धमुद्यमेन महीपते॥
tridaśaiścāmṛtaṁ labdhamudyamena mahīpate||
"'By the gods too, O king, was amrita obtained through effort.'"
Verse 12 (skanda.5.137.12)
हीनोद्यमा मानवा ये क्षत्त्रियाश्च विशेषतः। ते हास्यास्पदतां यांति हीनवीर्या दिनेदिने॥
hīnodyamā mānavā ye kṣattriyāśca viśeṣataḥ| te hāsyāspadatāṁ yāṁti hīnavīryā dinedine||
"'Men devoid of effort, especially kshatriyas, become objects of ridicule, growing weaker in strength day by day.'"
Verse 13 (skanda.5.137.13)
स्नेहं च कुरुते भ्राता राज्यलुब्धोऽर्थकारणात्। अर्थवीर्येण तेनैव संतोषं कुरुते नृपः॥
snehaṁ ca kurute bhrātā rājyalubdho'rthakāraṇāt| arthavīryeṇa tenaiva saṁtoṣaṁ kurute nṛpaḥ||
"'A brother, greedy for the kingdom, shows affection only for the sake of wealth; and it is by that very strength of wealth that a king finds contentment.'"
Verse 14 (skanda.5.137.14)
क्रियते न किमर्थं तु भूप मंत्रपरिग्रहः। भुज्यते सकलं राज्यं मया ते मंत्रिणा बलात्॥
kriyate na kimarthaṁ tu bhūpa maṁtraparigrahaḥ| bhujyate sakalaṁ rājyaṁ mayā te maṁtriṇā balāt||
"'Why, O king, should counsel not be taken? By force, with me as your minister, you shall enjoy the entire kingdom.'"
Verse 15 (skanda.5.137.15)
परोऽपि हितवान्बन्धुर्बन्धुरप्यहितः परः। अहितो देहजो व्याधिर्हितमारण्यमौषधम्॥
paro'pi hitavānbandhurbandhurapyahitaḥ paraḥ| ahito dehajo vyādhirhitamāraṇyamauṣadham||
"'Even a stranger who benefits one is a kinsman; even a kinsman, if harmful, is a stranger. A disease born in the body is harmful; a medicine, even from the forest, is beneficial.'"
Verse 16 (skanda.5.137.16)
भूमिमेते निर्गिलंति सर्पा बिलशयानिव। राजानमविरोद्धारं ब्राह्मणं चाप्रवासिनम्॥
bhūmimete nirgilaṁti sarpā bilaśayāniva| rājānamaviroddhāraṁ brāhmaṇaṁ cāpravāsinam||
"'These brothers, like serpents lying in their holes, are swallowing up the earth to no purpose — as does a king who does not contend for it, and a brahmin who never travels elsewhere.'"
Verse 17 (skanda.5.137.17)
मायया मोहितं सर्वं को वा कस्य च बांधवः। उद्यमः क्रियतां तस्माद्भ्रातॄणां निग्रहे द्रुतम्॥
māyayā mohitaṁ sarvaṁ ko vā kasya ca bāṁdhavaḥ| udyamaḥ kriyatāṁ tasmādbhrātṝṇāṁ nigrahe drutam||
"'All is deluded by maya; who indeed is kin to whom? Therefore let effort be made swiftly for the subjugation of your brothers.'"
Verse 18 (skanda.5.137.18)
भ्रातृभिर्भ्रातरः सर्वे निहता राज्यकारणात्। धर्मं च शाश्वतं ज्ञात्वा निहताश्चासुराः सुरैः॥
bhrātṛbhirbhrātaraḥ sarve nihatā rājyakāraṇāt| dharmaṁ ca śāśvataṁ jñātvā nihatāścāsurāḥ suraiḥ||
"'Brothers have all been slain by brothers for the sake of a kingdom; and knowing this to be the eternal law, even the asuras were slain by the gods.'"

इति मंत्रिवचः श्रुत्वा स राजा विस्मयान्वितः। हसित्वा प्रत्युवाचेदं ममायं शत्रुरागतः॥
iti maṁtrivacaḥ śrutvā sa rājā vismayānvitaḥ| hasitvā pratyuvācedaṁ mamāyaṁ śatrurāgataḥ||
"Hearing these words of the minister, the king was filled with astonishment; laughing, he replied, 'This enemy of mine has indeed arrived.'"
Verse 20 (skanda.5.137.20)
विक्रान्त उवाच। वयं च भ्रातरः पंच पृथिवीं कामयामहे। अतुष्टाः पृथगैश्वर्यं कथं कृत्स्ना भविष्यति॥
vikrānta uvāca| vayaṁ ca bhrātaraḥ paṁca pṛthivīṁ kāmayāmahe| atuṣṭāḥ pṛthagaiśvaryaṁ kathaṁ kṛtsnā bhaviṣyati||
"Vikranta said: 'We five brothers all desire the earth; unsatisfied with our separate dominions, how shall it become whole under one?'"

ज्येष्ठो भ्राता सुबाहुश्च द्वितीयः शत्रुमर्दनः। जयश्च विजयश्चैव तेषां लघुरहं यतः॥
jyeṣṭho bhrātā subāhuśca dvitīyaḥ śatrumardanaḥ| jayaśca vijayaścaiva teṣāṁ laghurahaṁ yataḥ||
"'My eldest brother is Subahu, the second Shatrumardana, then Jaya and Vijaya — since I am the youngest of them—'"
Verse 22 (skanda.5.137.22)
मंत्र्युवाच। राज्ये स्थितं पूजयंति ज्येष्ठं पूजार्हणैर्वरैः। कनिष्ठज्येष्ठता केयं राज्यं प्रार्थयतां नृणाम्॥
maṁtryuvāca| rājye sthitaṁ pūjayaṁti jyeṣṭhaṁ pūjārhaṇairvaraiḥ| kaniṣṭhajyeṣṭhatā keyaṁ rājyaṁ prārthayatāṁ nṛṇām||
"The minister said: 'Men honor with fitting honors him who is established in the kingdom, as the eldest; for those who seek a kingdom, what is this distinction of younger and elder?'"
Verse 23 (skanda.5.137.23)
तथेति च प्रतिज्ञाते विक्रांतेन महीभृता। स मंत्री कारयामास अभिचारविधिं तदा॥
tatheti ca pratijñāte vikrāṁtena mahībhṛtā| sa maṁtrī kārayāmāsa abhicāravidhiṁ tadā||
"When King Vikranta had agreed, saying 'So be it,' that minister then had a rite of black magic performed."
Verse 24 (skanda.5.137.24)
अथर्वणेन मंत्रेण पुरोधाः प्रचकार ह। ज्ञातं पुरोहितैस्तेषां तेऽपि चक्रुः समाहिताः॥
atharvaṇena maṁtreṇa purodhāḥ pracakāra ha| jñātaṁ purohitaisteṣāṁ te'pi cakruḥ samāhitāḥ||
"The chief priest performed it with Atharvan spells; when their own priests learned of it, they too, composed in mind, performed counter-rites."
Verse 25 (skanda.5.137.25)
अथ कृत्या समुत्पन्ना पश्चात्कृत्याचतुष्टयम्। सपुरोहितभृत्यांस्तानग्रसंस्तु समं तदा॥
atha kṛtyā samutpannā paścātkṛtyācatuṣṭayam| sapurohitabhṛtyāṁstānagrasaṁstu samaṁ tadā||
"Then a Kritya arose, and after her, four more Krityas; together they devoured, at the same time, those brothers along with their priests and servants."
Verse 26 (skanda.5.137.26)
ततः समस्तलोकस्य विस्मयश्चाभवन्महान्। यदैक कालं नेशुस्ते पृथक्पुरनिवासिनः॥
tataḥ samastalokasya vismayaścābhavanmahān| yadaika kālaṁ neśuste pṛthakpuranivāsinaḥ||
"Then great astonishment arose among all the people, when, at one and the same time, those dwellers of the separate cities perished."
Verse 27 (skanda.5.137.27)
ततः श्रुत्वा च निधनं पुत्राणां जल्पको नृपः। वने वशिष्ठं पप्रच्छ किमेतद्भगवन्प्रभो॥
tataḥ śrutvā ca nidhanaṁ putrāṇāṁ jalpako nṛpaḥ| vane vaśiṣṭhaṁ papraccha kimetadbhagavanprabho||
"Then, hearing of the death of his sons, King Jalpa, in the forest, questioned Vashishtha: 'What is this, O blessed lord?'"
Verse 28 (skanda.5.137.28)
तेनापि कथितं सर्वं वशिष्ठेन महात्मना। दिव्यज्ञानेन वृत्तांतं विकल्पं चाकरोन्नृपः॥
tenāpi kathitaṁ sarvaṁ vaśiṣṭhena mahātmanā| divyajñānena vṛttāṁtaṁ vikalpaṁ cākaronnṛpaḥ||
"The great-souled Vashishtha then related the entire matter through his divine knowledge; and the king fell into doubt and confusion."
Verse 29 (skanda.5.137.29)
राजोवाच। निमित्तोऽहं विनाशस्य धिग्धि ग्जन्म मदीयकम्। सार्द्धं त्वमात्यपुत्रैश्च मृतं ब्राह्मणपंचकम्॥
rājovāca| nimitto'haṁ vināśasya dhigdhi gjanma madīyakam| sārddhaṁ tvamātyaputraiśca mṛtaṁ brāhmaṇapaṁcakam||
"The king said: 'I am the cause of this destruction — shame, shame upon my birth! Along with the ministers' sons, five bands of brahmins have died.'"
Verse 30 (skanda.5.137.30)
मत्तोऽन्यः कः पापरतो भविष्यति महान्भुवि। यदि जन्म मदीयं स्या न्न च जातु महीतले॥
matto'nyaḥ kaḥ pāparato bhaviṣyati mahānbhuvi| yadi janma madīyaṁ syā nna ca jātu mahītale||
"'Who else, greater than I, shall ever be devoted to sin on this earth? Would that my birth had never at all occurred upon this earth.'"
Verse 31 (skanda.5.137.31)
ततस्ते न विनश्येयुर्मम पुत्रपुरोहिताः। धिग्राज्यं धिक्च मे जन्म भूभुजां च महाकुले॥
tataste na vinaśyeyurmama putrapurohitāḥ| dhigrājyaṁ dhikca me janma bhūbhujāṁ ca mahākule||
"'Then my sons and priests would not have perished. Shame on kingship, and shame on my birth in this great line of kings!'"
Verse 32 (skanda.5.137.32)
कारणत्वं गतो योऽहं विनाशस्य द्विजन्मनाम्। कुर्वन्तः स्वामिनस्तेऽर्थं पुत्राणां मम याजकाः। नाशं ययुर्न दुष्टास्ते दुष्टोऽहं नाशकारणे॥
kāraṇatvaṁ gato yo'haṁ vināśasya dvijanmanām| kurvantaḥ svāminaste'rthaṁ putrāṇāṁ mama yājakāḥ| nāśaṁ yayurna duṣṭāste duṣṭo'haṁ nāśakāraṇe||
"'I have become the cause of the destruction of the twice-born; my sons' priests, doing their masters' business, perished, though they were not at fault — I am the one at fault, being the cause of the destruction.'"
Verse 33 (skanda.5.137.33)
इत्थमुद्विग्नहृदयः स जल्पः पृथिवीपतिः। पप्रच्छ च पुनः प्रह्वो वशिष्ठं ज्ञानिनां वरम्॥
itthamudvignahṛdayaḥ sa jalpaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ| papraccha ca punaḥ prahvo vaśiṣṭhaṁ jñānināṁ varam||
"Thus, with troubled heart, King Jalpa, lord of the earth, again humbly questioned Vashishtha, the foremost of the wise."
Verse 34 (skanda.5.137.34)
राजोवाच। भगवन्ब्रूहि मे तीर्थमवियोगकरं सदा। सद्यः पापहरं विप्र लिंगं वा कथय प्रभो॥
rājovāca| bhagavanbrūhi me tīrthamaviyogakaraṁ sadā| sadyaḥ pāpaharaṁ vipra liṁgaṁ vā kathaya prabho||
"The king said: 'O blessed one, tell me of a tirtha that ever prevents separation from loved ones, or, O brahmin lord, tell me of a linga that removes sin at once.'"
Verse 35 (skanda.5.137.35)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा जल्पस्य पृथिवीपतेः। वशिष्ठः कथयामास दिव्यज्ञानेन पार्वति॥
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā jalpasya pṛthivīpateḥ| vaśiṣṭhaḥ kathayāmāsa divyajñānena pārvati||
"Hearing these words of King Jalpa, lord of the earth, Vashishtha, O Parvati, spoke through his divine knowledge."

गच्छ जल्प ममादेशान्महाकालवनोत्तमम्। कृत्वा निः क्षत्रियां पृथ्वीं यत्र रामस्तपस्यति। तत्र लिंगमनाद्यं च कुक्कुटेश्वरपश्चिमे॥
gaccha jalpa mamādeśānmahākālavanottamam| kṛtvā niḥ kṣatriyāṁ pṛthvīṁ yatra rāmastapasyati| tatra liṁgamanādyaṁ ca kukkuṭeśvarapaścime||
"'Go, O Jalpa, by my command, to the excellent Mahakalavana, where Rama, having made the earth free of kshatriyas, performs austerities; there, to the west of Kukkuteshvara, is the beginningless linga.'"
Verse 37 (skanda.5.137.37)
तदाराधय राजेंद्र जामदग्न्याश्रमे स्थितः। वशिष्ठस्य वचः श्रुत्वा जल्पोऽसौ पृथिवीपतिः॥
tadārādhaya rājeṁdra jāmadagnyāśrame sthitaḥ| vaśiṣṭhasya vacaḥ śrutvā jalpo'sau pṛthivīpatiḥ||
"'Worship it, O king of kings, dwelling in the ashram of Jamadagnya.' Having heard the words of Vashishtha, that King Jalpa, lord of the earth—"
Verse 38 (skanda.5.137.38)
देवदारुवनं त्यक्त्वा महाकालवनं गतः। ददर्श तत्र तल्लिंगमनाद्यं देवसंस्तुतम्। पूजयामास विधिवत्परमेण समाधिना॥
devadāruvanaṁ tyaktvā mahākālavanaṁ gataḥ| dadarśa tatra talliṁgamanādyaṁ devasaṁstutam| pūjayāmāsa vidhivatparameṇa samādhinā||
"—leaving the Devadaru forest, went to Mahakalavana; there he beheld that beginningless linga, praised by the gods, and worshipped it duly with the utmost concentration."
Verse 39 (skanda.5.137.39)
तत्र वाणी समुत्पन्ना लिंगमध्याद्वरानने। न त्वं पापसमाचारो न त्वं मरणकारणम्। पुत्राणां नृपविप्राणामदृष्टं तत्र कारणम्॥
tatra vāṇī samutpannā liṁgamadhyādvarānane| na tvaṁ pāpasamācāro na tvaṁ maraṇakāraṇam| putrāṇāṁ nṛpaviprāṇāmadṛṣṭaṁ tatra kāraṇam||
"There, O fair one, a voice arose from within the linga: 'You are not of sinful conduct, nor are you the cause of death; the unseen destiny was the cause there of the death of the princes and the brahmins.'"
Verse 40 (skanda.5.137.40)
विपाकेन स्वकीयेन गता वैवस्वतं पुरम्। मा शोकं कुरु राजेंद्र गहना कर्मणो गतिः॥
vipākena svakīyena gatā vaivasvataṁ puram| mā śokaṁ kuru rājeṁdra gahanā karmaṇo gatiḥ||
"'By the ripening of their own deeds they went to the city of Vaivasvata; grieve not, O king of kings — the course of karma is inscrutable.'"
Verse 41 (skanda.5.137.41)
अनेन शुद्धभावेन तुष्टोऽहं नृपसत्तम। यदभीष्टं वरं ब्रूहि तत्ते दास्यामि नान्यथा॥
anena śuddhabhāvena tuṣṭo'haṁ nṛpasattama| yadabhīṣṭaṁ varaṁ brūhi tatte dāsyāmi nānyathā||
"'By this pure devotion I am pleased, O best of kings; tell me the boon you desire, and I shall grant it to you, not otherwise.'"
Verse 42 (skanda.5.137.42)
राजोवाच। यदि तुष्टोऽसि मे देव यदि देयो वरो मम। संसारसागरे घोरे मा भवेन्मम जन्म च॥
rājovāca| yadi tuṣṭo'si me deva yadi deyo varo mama| saṁsārasāgare ghore mā bhavenmama janma ca||
"The king said: 'If you are pleased with me, O god, and if a boon is to be given to me, let me not be born again in this terrible ocean of samsara.'"
Verse 43 (skanda.5.137.43)
अक्षयां देहि मे कीर्त्तिं नाम्ना मे विश्रुतो भुवि। अयं जल्पेश्वरो देवो जल्पेनाराधितो विभुः॥
akṣayāṁ dehi me kīrttiṁ nāmnā me viśruto bhuvi| ayaṁ jalpeśvaro devo jalpenārādhito vibhuḥ||
"'Grant me imperishable fame; may this become renowned on earth by my name — may this lord, worshipped by Jalpa, be known as the god Jalpeshvara.'"
Verse 44 (skanda.5.137.44)
वदंतु त्रिदशाः सर्वे एष मे दुर्लभो वरः। ये त्वां पश्यंति मनुजा मन्नाम्ना ख्यातिमागतम्। तेषां वियोगो मा भूयात्पुत्रतो धनतोऽपि वा॥
vadaṁtu tridaśāḥ sarve eṣa me durlabho varaḥ| ye tvāṁ paśyaṁti manujā mannāmnā khyātimāgatam| teṣāṁ viyogo mā bhūyātputrato dhanato'pi vā||
"'Let all the gods declare this to be my hard-won boon: may those men who behold you, thus come to fame under my name, never suffer separation, whether from sons or from wealth.'"
Verse 45 (skanda.5.137.45)
न संसारभयं तेषां दस्युतो नैव राजतः। न भूतग्रहरोगेभ्यो भयमस्तु कदाचन॥
na saṁsārabhayaṁ teṣāṁ dasyuto naiva rājataḥ| na bhūtagraharogebhyo bhayamastu kadācana||
"'Let them have no fear of samsara, nor from thieves, nor from kings; let there never be fear from spirits, planetary afflictions, or disease.'"
Verse 46 (skanda.5.137.46)
शिवमस्तु सदा तेषां येषां त्वं दर्शनं गतः। ते धन्या मानुषे लोके ये त्वां शरणमागताः॥
śivamastu sadā teṣāṁ yeṣāṁ tvaṁ darśanaṁ gataḥ| te dhanyā mānuṣe loke ye tvāṁ śaraṇamāgatāḥ||
"'Let there ever be good fortune for those to whom you have granted your sight. Blessed indeed are they in the world of men who have come to you for refuge.'"
Verse 47 (skanda.5.137.47)
सर्वतीर्थाभिषेकैस्तु यत्पुण्यं प्राप्यते नरैः। तत्सर्वमधिकं देव लभ्यते तव दर्शनात॥
sarvatīrthābhiṣekaistu yatpuṇyaṁ prāpyate naraiḥ| tatsarvamadhikaṁ deva labhyate tava darśanāta||
"'Whatever merit men obtain from bathing at all the sacred tirthas, all that, O god, and more, is obtained through the sight of you.'"
Verse 48 (skanda.5.137.48)
तावत्पतंति संसारे घोरे दुःखशताकुले। यावन्न दृश्यते देवः संसारार्णवतारकः॥
tāvatpataṁti saṁsāre ghore duḥkhaśatākule| yāvanna dṛśyate devaḥ saṁsārārṇavatārakaḥ||
"'Men fall into this terrible samsara, beset with a hundred sorrows, only so long as the god who ferries them across the ocean of samsara is not seen.'"
Verse 49 (skanda.5.137.49)
यदा पापक्षयः पुंसां तदा ते दर्शनं भवेत्। महता सुकृतेनैव नाल्पेन तपसा प्रभो॥
yadā pāpakṣayaḥ puṁsāṁ tadā te darśanaṁ bhavet| mahatā sukṛtenaiva nālpena tapasā prabho||
"'When men's sins are destroyed, then does your sight come to them; it is by great merit alone, O lord, not by trifling austerity.'"
Verse 50 (skanda.5.137.50)
एवं भविष्यतीत्युक्त्वा तेन लिंगेन पार्वति। पश्यतां सर्वदेवानां स्वतनौ संनिवेशितः॥
evaṁ bhaviṣyatītyuktvā tena liṁgena pārvati| paśyatāṁ sarvadevānāṁ svatanau saṁniveśitaḥ||
"Saying, 'So shall it be,' O Parvati, that linga, in the sight of all the gods, drew the king into its own form."
Verse 51 (skanda.5.137.51)
तस्मिँल्लिंगे लयं प्राप्ते नृपे जल्पे वरानने। देवो जल्पेश्वरः ख्यातो देवैरुक्तो महीतले। भुक्तिदो मुक्तिदश्चैव सदाभीष्टकरः स्मृतः॥
tasmi~lliṁge layaṁ prāpte nṛpe jalpe varānane| devo jalpeśvaraḥ khyāto devairukto mahītale| bhuktido muktidaścaiva sadābhīṣṭakaraḥ smṛtaḥ||
"O fair one, when King Jalpa had attained dissolution in that linga, the god became renowned as Jalpeshvara, so proclaimed by the gods upon the earth — remembered as the bestower of enjoyment and of liberation, ever granting one's desires."
Verse 52 (skanda.5.137.52)
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। जल्पेश्वरस्य देवस्य शृणु केदारसंज्ञकम्॥
eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| jalpeśvarasya devasya śṛṇu kedārasaṁjñakam||
"This, O Devi, is the sin-destroying power of the god Jalpeshvara that I have told you; now hear of the one named Kedara."
