The Glory of Kayavarohana

Chapter 152All chaptersChapter 154

Verse 1 (skanda.5.153.1)

mahādeva uvāca| kāyāvarohaṇasyāpi utpattiṁ śṛṇu pārvati| yasyāḥ śravaṇamātreṇa na naraḥ kāyavānbhavet||

Mahadeva said: Hear also, O Parvati, the origin of Kayavarohana, by the mere hearing of which a man no longer remains embodied in the cycle of rebirth.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.153.2)

brahmaṇaḥ sṛṣṭikāmasya manorvaisvate'ntare| dakṣastvajāyatāṁguṣṭhāddakṣiṇātsa prajāpatiḥ||

From Brahma, desirous of creation, in the Vaivasvata epoch, Daksha Prajapati was born from his right thumb.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.153.3)

vāmādajāyatāṁguṣṭhādbhāryā tasya mahātmanaḥ| tasyāṁ pañcāśataṁ kanyāḥ sa evājanayatprabhuḥ||

From the left thumb was born the wife of that great-souled one. In her that lord begot fifty daughters.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.153.4)

tāḥ sarvāścānavadyāṁgīḥ kanyāḥ kamalalocanāḥ| putrikāḥ sthāpayāmāsa naṣṭaputraḥ prajāpatiḥ||

Being without sons, Prajapati established all those flawless-limbed, lotus-eyed daughters as his heirs.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.153.5)

dadau sa daśa dharmāya kaśyapāya trayodaśa| divyena vidhinā devi saptaviṁśatimiṁdave||

He gave ten to Dharma, thirteen to Kashyapa, and, O goddess, by a divine rite, twenty-seven to the Moon.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.153.6)

rohiṇī vallabhā jātā tasya candrasya sarvadā| ṣaḍviṁśatikṛte candraḥ śapto dakṣeṇa pārvati||

Rohini became the eternal favourite of that Moon. And, O Parvati, on account of the remaining twenty-six, the Moon was cursed by Daksha.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.153.7)

caṁdreṇāpi tathā śapto dakṣaḥ prācetasaḥ kṛtaḥ| ayajatso'śvamedhena bhūtvā prācetasātmajaḥ||

Cursed in turn by the Moon, Daksha was made to become Prachetasa, the son of Prachetas. Having become the son of Prachetas, he performed a sacrifice with the ashvamedha rite.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.153.8)

nāmaṁtrito'haṁ mohena dakṣeṇa parvatātmaje| tatra devanikāyānāṁ yajñabhāgānaśeṣataḥ||

O daughter of the mountain, in his delusion Daksha did not invite me to that sacrifice. There, the entire portions of the sacrifice for the host of gods —

Verse 9 (skanda.5.153.9)

havyavāhastadā yukto vahanmaṁtraiḥ samīritaḥ| tvayā dṛṣṭo viśālākṣi nirālaṁbe'ṁbare sthitaḥ||

Agni, the carrier of oblations, thus engaged, borne along by the mantras, was seen by you, O wide-eyed one, standing unsupported in the sky.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.153.10)

smaraṁtyā pūrvavairaṁ tu vijñapto'haṁ tvayā priye| tvaṁ devaḥ sarvadevānāṁ gatiśca śaraṇaṁ tathā||

Recalling the old enmity, you, O beloved, addressed me: "You are the very god of all gods, their refuge and their shelter.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.153.11)

tvaṁ yajñastvaṁ vaṣaṭkāro hotā'dhvaryustvameva ca| tvayā vinā kathaṁ yajño varttate sarvadevapa||

You are the sacrifice itself, the very oblatory cry of vashat, the offering priest and the officiating priest as well. How can any sacrifice proceed without you, O lord of all the gods?

Verse 12 (skanda.5.153.12)

devānāṁ bhāgadheyāni vahatyagnirayaṁ bhayāt| sagarvaścāvaliptaśca dakṣaḥ prācetasaḥ kila||

This Agni, out of fear, carries away the portions of the gods. This Daksha Prachetasa is, indeed, arrogant and puffed up with pride.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.153.13)

anusmaranpūrvavairaṁ naiva dāsyatyaśāsitaḥ| kāyahīnaśca karttavyo dakṣo vahnistathaiva ca||

Recalling the old enmity, he will never give anything unless made to answer for it. Both Daksha and this Agni should be made bodiless.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.153.14)

ye ca yajñe samānītā devā dakṣasya śaṁkara| te sarve kāyarahitāḥ kāryā stripurasūdana||

And, O Shankara, whatever gods have gathered at Daksha's sacrifice, O destroyer of Tripura, let all of them be made bodiless."

Verse 15 (skanda.5.153.15)

evamukte tvayā devi mayāpyuktaṁ varānane| pūrvajanmani dakṣo'yaṁ pitā tava śucismite||

When you had spoken thus, O goddess, I too replied, O fair-faced one: "In your former birth, this Daksha, O bright-smiling one, was your own father.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.153.16)

vahniścādeśakārī ca devāḥ krīḍanakāḥ priye| madīyaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā kṛtaḥ krodhastvayā priye||

Agni is but a doer of another's bidding, and the gods are but at play, O beloved." Hearing my words, O beloved, you fell into anger.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.153.17)

lalāṭe bhrukuṭīṁ kṛtvā procchvasaṁtyā punaḥpunaḥ| krodhātkareṇa nāsāgraṁ marditaṁ bahuśastadā||

Furrowing your brow, sighing again and again, in your anger you rubbed the tip of your nose repeatedly with your hand.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.153.18)

tasminsaṁmardyamāne tu nāsāgre parvatātmaje| jātā strī bhrukuṭīvakrā caturdaṁṣṭrā trilocanā||

O daughter of the mountain, from that nose-tip, thus rubbed, a woman was born — her brows knit crooked, four-fanged, and three-eyed.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.153.19)

baddhagodhāṁgulitrā ca kavacābaddhamekhalā| sakhaḍgā sadhanuṣkā ca satūṇā sapatākinī||

She wore a leather archer's guard on her fingers, was girded with armour and a belt, and was equipped with sword, bow, quiver, and banner.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.153.20)

sahasrāsyā śatabhujā sahasracaraṇodarī| pratikūlaiḥ padairdevi kaṁpayaṁtī tathā bhuvam||

She had a thousand faces, a hundred arms, and a thousand feet and bellies; with her fearsome tread, O goddess, she made the very earth tremble.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.153.21)

kṛtaṁ nāma tvayā devi tāṁ dṛṣṭvā ca tamomayīm| bhadrakālī ca māyā ca sarvalokanamaskṛte||

Beholding her, so dark and dreadful, O goddess, you yourself gave her the names Bhadrakali, Maya, and She Who Is Worshipped by All the Worlds.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.153.22)

mayā sṛṣṭastu puruṣastādṛśo lomaharṣaṇaḥ| sa cāpi prāṁjalirbhūtvā māmuvāca punaḥpunaḥ| ājñāpaya sureśāna kiṁ karomi jagatprabho||

I too then created a man equally hair-raising in his form. He too, with folded hands, addressed me again and again: "Command me, O lord of the gods, O master of the world — what shall I do?"

Verse 23 (skanda.5.153.23)

tato devi mayājñapto bhāvaṁ jñātvā tvadīyakam| kṛtvā nāma manojñaṁ tu vīrabhadra iti smṛtaḥ||

Then, O goddess, understanding your sentiment, I commanded him, and gave him a fitting name — he is remembered as Virabhadra.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.153.24)

vīrabhadra mamādeśādbhadrakālyā sahānayā| prācetasātmajaṁ dakṣaṁ sagarvaṁ sahadaivatam||

"O Virabhadra, by my command, together with this Bhadrakali, go and destroy Daksha, the proud son of Prachetas, together with the gods present with him,

Verse 25 (skanda.5.153.25)

vidhvaṁsaya gaṇādhyakṣa sayajñaṁ saparigraham| dattaṁ mayā mahatsainyamasaṁkhyeyaguṇasya ca||

along with his sacrifice and all his belongings, O lord of the ganas!" I gave him a vast army possessed of countless powers,

Verse 26 (skanda.5.153.26)

tvayāpi bhadrakālyāstu dattaṁ sainyaṁ bhayāvaham| kapālakartrikāhastaṁ mātṝṇāṁ gaṇamakṣayam||

and you too gave Bhadrakali a fearsome army — an inexhaustible host of Mother-goddesses, skull-bowls and choppers in their hands.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.153.27)

tatastau tena sainyena mahatātisamāvṛtau| jagmatustatra yatrāste dakṣaḥ prācetaso yajan||

Then those two, surrounded by that vast host, went to where Daksha Prachetasa was performing his sacrifice.

Verse 28 (skanda.5.153.28)

devaiḥ parivṛto devi sadasyairbrāhmaṇaiḥ saha| tato devāḥ suruddhāste tena sainyena pārvati| viśrabdhā maṁtrapūtaṁ tu pibaṁtaḥ somamadhvare||

He was surrounded by gods and by brahmin assessors of the assembly. Then, O Parvati, those gods, carefree, drinking the mantra-consecrated soma at the sacrifice, were surrounded by that host.

Verse 29 (skanda.5.153.29)

trinetreṇa triśūlena tridaśādhipa īśvaraḥ| trāsitaḥ sahasā śakro gaṇenādhvaramadhyagaḥ||

By the trident-bearing, three-eyed gana of the lord, Shakra, sovereign of the thirty gods, standing in the midst of the sacrifice, was suddenly struck with terror.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.153.30)

yamākhyena gaṇenaiva yamakalpaprabheṇa ca| somapāne prasaktaśca yamaścākarṣito'dhvare||

By a gana named Yama, splendid as death itself, Yama too, absorbed in drinking the soma, was dragged forth from the sacrifice.

Verse 31 (skanda.5.153.31)

pāśena varuṇo baddhaḥ pāśena gaṇapena tu| paścimāśādhipo vīraḥ prāṇena parameśvari||

O supreme goddess, Varuna, lord of the western quarter, that hero, was bound by the gana named Pasha, with a very noose, through his own vital breath.

Verse 32 (skanda.5.153.32)

tāḍito'nila evātha uttare naravāhanaḥ| uttarāśādhipo devi nidhānaiḥ sahito'dhvare| vīrabhadraniyuktāste cakruryuddhaṁ sudāruṇam||

The Wind too was struck down. And, O goddess, Naravahana, lord of the northern quarter, together with his treasures, was present at the sacrifice. Those appointed by Virabhadra waged a most terrible battle.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.153.33)

atha yuddhaṁ cakāroccairbhadrakālī bhayāvahā| vikarālī mahākālī kālikā kalaśodarī||

Then dread Bhadrakali too waged fierce battle, along with Vikarali, Mahakali, Kalika, and Kalashodari,

Verse 34 (skanda.5.153.34)

prajvālajvalanākārā śuṣkamāṁsātibhairavā| etāścānyāśca śataśo naramālāvibhūṣaṇāḥ||

blazing like fire, gaunt and terrible; these and hundreds of others besides, adorned with garlands of human skulls,

Verse 35 (skanda.5.153.35)

kapālakartrikāhastā jaghnurdevagaṇāstadā| iti mātṛgaṇaṁ kruddhaṁ mardayaṁtaṁ surāstadā| dṛṣṭvābhyupagatā devāstuṣitā yuddhalālasā||

with skull-bowl and chopper in hand, then struck down the ranks of the gods. Seeing this enraged host of Mother-goddesses crushing the gods, the Tushita gods, eager for battle, came forward.

Verse 36 (skanda.5.153.36)

kecicca cikṣipuḥ śaktīḥ kecitprāsāṁstathāpare| kecicca tomaraistīkṣṇaiḥ kecitkhaḍgaiśca paṭṭiśaiḥ||

Some hurled javelins, others hurled lances; some struck with sharp iron pikes, others with swords and battle-axes.

Verse 37 (skanda.5.153.37)

arddito mātṛsaṁghastu pīḍitāḥ pramathā yadā| bhadrakālī tadā kruddhā gadayā śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ||

When the assembly of the Mothers was hard pressed, and the Pramathas too were afflicted, Bhadrakali, growing enraged, with her mace and showers of arrows,

Verse 38 (skanda.5.153.38)

khaḍgādibhiḥ ṣaḍarkāṁśuḥ pīḍayāmāsa saṁyuge| bhagasya netre pūṣṇastu daśanāḥ sūditā mukhāt||

and with swords and other weapons, wreaked havoc in the battle. Bhaga's eyes were torn out, and Pushan's teeth were knocked from his mouth.

Verse 39 (skanda.5.153.39)

karāndinakarasyaiva caraṇau bhāskarasya ca| muśalena hatā ye'ṣṭau vasavo raṇakovidāḥ||

The hands of the Sun and the feet of Bhaskara were cut off; the eight Vasus, skilled in war, were struck down with a club,

Verse 40 (skanda.5.153.40)

vamaṁto rudhiraṁ te'pi naṣṭā jarjaramastakāḥ| videhāśca kṛtā yuddhe tuṣitā raṇagarvitāḥ||

vomiting blood, their heads shattered, they too fell. Even the war-proud Tushita gods were made bodiless in that battle.

Verse 41 (skanda.5.153.41)

baddhaḥ prācetaso dakṣaḥ pāśena sudṛḍhena ca| śeṣāśca tridaśā bhītā brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ||

Daksha Prachetasa was bound with a most sturdy noose. The remaining, terrified gods took refuge with Brahma.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.153.42)

vṛttāṁtaḥ kathitaḥ sarvo vistareṇa yathā tathā| ādyā ye tuṣitā devā videhāścaiva te kṛtāḥ||

They related the entire account in full, exactly as it had happened: "The gods who were originally the Tushitas have all been made bodiless.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.153.43)

naṣṭāśca vasavo devāḥ pīḍitā bhāskarā raṇe| na jñāyate sahasrākṣo na yamo na dhaneśvaraḥ| varuṇo yādasāṁ nāthaḥ kva gataḥ parameśvaraḥ||

The Vasu gods are destroyed; the Adityas are wounded in battle. Nothing is known of the thousand-eyed Indra, nor of Yama, nor of Kubera. Where has Varuna, the lord of the waters, gone, O supreme lord? It is not known."

Verse 44 (skanda.5.153.44)

bhadrakālyā hataṁ sarvaṁ vīrabhadragaṇena ca| bhagnaśca yajñayūpo vai vidhvastaṁ kalaśaṁ tadā||

"Everything has been destroyed by Bhadrakali and the host of Virabhadra. The sacrificial post is broken, and the sacrificial vessel has been shattered.

Verse 45 (skanda.5.153.45)

pradīpitā mahāśālā bhagnaṁ vai yajñatoraṇam| teṣāṁ tu vacanaṁ śrutvā brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ| ājagāma kṛpāviṣṭo yatrāhaṁ mandare sthitaḥ||

The great sacrificial hall has caught fire, and the sacred archway of the sacrifice is broken." Hearing their account, Brahma, grandsire of the worlds, filled with compassion, came to where I was seated on Mount Mandara.

Verse 46 (skanda.5.153.46)

stutiṁ kṛtvā madīyāṁ tu vākyamuktamidaṁ tadā| ādyā ye tuṣitā devā videhāścaiva te kṛtāḥ||

Having praised me, he then spoke these words: "The gods who were originally the Tushitas have all been made bodiless.

Verse 47 (skanda.5.153.47)

bhadrakālyā mahādeva vasavo jarjarīkṛtāḥ| pīḍitā bhāskarā yuddhe śeṣā naṣṭā diśo gatāḥ||

O Mahadeva, the Vasus have been shattered by Bhadrakali, the Adityas have been wounded in the battle, and the rest have perished and fled in every direction.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.153.48)

kāyāvarohaṇaṁ deva tuṣitānāṁ kathaṁ bhavet| brahmaṇo vacanaṁ śrutvā mayā proktaṁ varānane||

How, O god, may the descent of a body come once more upon the Tushitas?" Hearing Brahma's words, O fair one, I said:

Verse 49 (skanda.5.153.49)

mahākālavane kṣetre gacchaṁtu tuṣitāstvamī| lakuṭīśo gato yatra kāyāvarohaṇādgraham||

"Let these Tushitas go to the sacred region of Mahakalavana, to where Lakutisha went, to the very place of Kayavarohana's manifestation.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.153.50)

brāhmaṇāśca mamādeśāccatuḥśiṣyaiḥ samanvitāḥ| dvāpare samatikrāṁte prāpte kaliyuge tathā||

By my command, brahmins, together with four disciples, when the Dvapara age has passed and the Kali age has arrived,

Verse 51 (skanda.5.153.51)

tatra kāyamanuprāptā mama śiṣyā mamopamāḥ| avasaṁta kṣitau dhanyā rakṣaṇārthaṁ dvijanmanām||

shall attain a body there once more; my disciples, resembling me, blessed, shall dwell upon the earth for the protection of the twice-born.

Verse 52 (skanda.5.153.52)

kṣetrasya dakṣiṇe tasya vidyate liṁgamuttamam| sarvasaṁpatkaraṁ divyaṁ siddhānāṁ kāyadāyakam||

In the south of that sacred region there exists an excellent linga, divine, bestower of every fortune, giver of bodies to the siddhas.

Verse 53 (skanda.5.153.53)

prasādāttasya liṁgasya kāyānprāpsyaṁtyamī surāḥ| madīyaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā gatāste tuṣitāḥ priye||

By the grace of that linga, these gods shall regain their bodies." Hearing my words, O beloved, those Tushitas went there,

Verse 54 (skanda.5.153.54)

muditā brahmaṇā sārddhaṁ yatra talliṁgamuttamam| prasādāttasya liṁgasya prāptaṁ kāyamanuttamam||

joyfully accompanied by Brahma, to where that excellent linga stood. By the grace of that linga, they obtained an incomparable new body.

Verse 55 (skanda.5.153.55)

punaste tādṛśā jātāstuṣitā yādṛśā'bhavan| ato devaiḥ kṛtaṁ nāma kāyāvarohaṇeśvaraḥ| samīhitaprado nityaṁ khyāto devo bhaviṣyati||

Those Tushitas became once more exactly as they had been. Therefore the gods gave it the name Kayavarohaneshvara, and this god shall become renowned as the eternal granter of desires.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.153.56)

ye gatvā dakṣiṇāmāśāṁ devaṁ kāyāvarohaṇam| paśyaṁti parayā bhaktyā yamasteṣāṁ pitā bhavet||

Those who go to the southern quarter and behold the god Kayavarohana with the deepest devotion — for them Yama himself becomes as a father.

Verse 57 (skanda.5.153.57)

janmakoṭisahasraistu yatpāpaṁ samupārjitam| tatsarvaṁ nāśamāyāti darśanādeva nānyathā||

Whatever sin has been accumulated over thousands of millions of births is entirely destroyed by this sight alone, and by nothing else.

Verse 58 (skanda.5.153.58)

svakarmaṇā gatā ye ca narake pitaro gaṇāḥ| darśanāttasya liṁgasya teṣāṁ muktirbhaviṣyati||

Even those ancestors who, by their own deeds, have gone to hell, attain liberation through the sight of that linga.

Verse 59 (skanda.5.153.59)

ye paśyaṁti prasaṁgena devaṁ kāyārohaṇam| na teṣāṁ punarāvṛttiḥ kalpakoṭiśatairapi||

Those who, even by chance, behold the god Kayavarohana shall not return to rebirth even after hundreds of millions of kalpas.

Verse 60 (skanda.5.153.60)

sparśanāttasya liṁgasya pāpino'pi hi ye narāḥ| te yāsyaṁti paraṁ sthānaṁ sarvapāpavivarjitam||

Even sinful men, by touching that linga, freed from every sin, attain that supreme abode.

Verse 61 (skanda.5.153.61)

śāṭhyena pūjito devaḥ kāyāvarohaṇeśvaraḥ| dadāti rājyaṁ bhogāṁśca svargalokaṁ sanātanam||

Even when worshipped with mere pretence, the god Kayavarohaneshvara grants kingship, enjoyments, and the eternal world of heaven.

Verse 62 (skanda.5.153.62)

dvādaśyāṁ ye prapaśyaṁti snātvā kāyāvarohaṇam| te bhittvā brahmasadanaṁ yāsyaṁti paramāṁ gatim||

Those who, on the twelfth lunar day, bathe and behold Kayavarohana pierce even through the abode of Brahma and attain the supreme state.

Verse 63 (skanda.5.153.63)

eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| kāyāvarohaṇeśasya bilveśvaramatho śṛṇu||

Thus, O goddess, I have told you the sin-destroying greatness of the lord Kayavarohana; now hear of Bilveshvara.
