Verse 1 (skanda.5.159.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। ततोऽर्णवात्समुत्तीर्य त्रिकूटशिखरे स्थितम्। महाकनकवर्णाभे नानावर्णशिलाचिते॥

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato'rṇavātsamuttīrya trikūṭaśikhare sthitam| mahākanakavarṇābhe nānāvarṇaśilācite||

Sri Markandeya said: Then, having come up out of the ocean, I beheld him stationed on the peak of Trikuta — a peak of great golden radiance, studded with stones of many colors,

Verse 2 (skanda.5.159.2)

महाशृङ्गे समासीनं रुद्रकोटिसमन्वितम्। महादेवं महात्मानमीशानमजमव्ययम्॥

mahāśṛṅge samāsīnaṁ rudrakoṭisamanvitam| mahādevaṁ mahātmānamīśānamajamavyayam||

seated on the great summit, attended by a crore of Rudras — the great god, the great soul, Ishana, the unborn, the imperishable,

Verse 3 (skanda.5.159.3)

सर्वभूतमयं तात मनुना सह सुव्रत। भूयो ववन्दे चरणौ सर्वदेवनमस्कृतौ॥

sarvabhūtamayaṁ tāta manunā saha suvrata| bhūyo vavande caraṇau sarvadevanamaskṛtau||

O father, whose being is all creatures — together with Manu, O one of good vows, I again bowed to his two feet, worshipped by all the gods.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.159.4)

तत्काले युगसाहस्रं सह रुद्रेण मानद। तस्मिन्नेकार्णवे घोरे स्थितोऽहं कुरुनंदन॥

tatkāle yugasāhasraṁ saha rudreṇa mānada| tasminnekārṇave ghore sthito'haṁ kurunaṁdana||

At that time, O bestower of honor, O joy of the Kurus, I remained in that terrible single ocean for a thousand ages, together with Rudra.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.159.5)

युधिष्ठिर उवाच। एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु मे तात परं कौतूहलं हृदि। जातं तत्कथयस्वेति शृण्वतः सह बान्धवैः॥

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca| etacchrutvā tu me tāta paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hṛdi| jātaṁ tatkathayasveti śṛṇvataḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ||

Yudhishthira said: Hearing this, O father, great curiosity has arisen in my heart; tell it, as I and my kinsmen listen.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.159.6)

का सा पद्मपलाशाक्षी तमोभूते महार्णवे। योगिवद्भ्रमते नित्यं रुद्रजां स्वां च याब्रवीत्॥

kā sā padmapalāśākṣī tamobhūte mahārṇave| yogivadbhramate nityaṁ rudrajāṁ svāṁ ca yābravīt||

Who was that lotus-petal-eyed one, who wanders ever, like a yogi, in the darkness-filled great ocean, and who declared herself born of Rudra?

Verse 7 (skanda.5.159.7)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। एतमेव मया प्रश्नं पुरा पृष्टो मनुः स्वयम्। तदेव तेऽद्य वक्ष्यामि अबलायाः समुद्भवम्॥

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| etameva mayā praśnaṁ purā pṛṣṭo manuḥ svayam| tadeva te'dya vakṣyāmi abalāyāḥ samudbhavam||

Sri Markandeya said: This very question I myself once asked of Manu; that very account of the woman's origin I shall now tell you.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.159.8)

व्यतीतायां निशायां तु ब्रह्मणः परमेष्ठिनः। ततः प्रभाते विमले सृज्यमानेषु जन्तुषु॥

vyatītāyāṁ niśāyāṁ tu brahmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ| tataḥ prabhāte vimale sṛjyamāneṣu jantuṣu||

When the night of Brahma, the Supreme Lord, had passed, then, in the clear dawn, as creatures were being created,

Verse 9 (skanda.5.159.9)

मनुं प्रणम्य शिरसा पृच्छाम्येतद्युधिष्ठिर। केयं पद्मपलाशाक्षी श्यामा चंद्रनिभानना॥

manuṁ praṇamya śirasā pṛcchāmyetadyudhiṣṭhira| keyaṁ padmapalāśākṣī śyāmā caṁdranibhānanā||

bowing my head to Manu, I asked him this, O Yudhishthira: 'Who is this lotus-petal-eyed one, dark-hued, with a face like the moon,

Verse 10 (skanda.5.159.10)

एकार्णवे भ्रमत्येका रुद्रजास्मीति वादिनी। सावित्री वेदमाता च ह्यथवा सा सरस्वती॥

ekārṇave bhramatyekā rudrajāsmīti vādinī| sāvitrī vedamātā ca hyathavā sā sarasvatī||

who wanders alone in the single ocean, declaring "I am born of Rudra"? Is she Savitri, the mother of the Vedas, or is she Sarasvati?

Verse 11 (skanda.5.159.11)

मन्दाकिनी सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा लक्ष्मीर्वा किमथो उमा। कालरात्रिर्भवेत्साक्षात्प्रकृतिर्वा सुखोचिता॥

mandākinī saricchreṣṭhā lakṣmīrvā kimatho umā| kālarātrirbhavetsākṣātprakṛtirvā sukhocitā||

Is she the Mandakini, best of rivers, or Lakshmi, or else Uma? Or is she Kalaratri herself, or Prakriti, worthy of happiness?

Verse 12 (skanda.5.159.12)

एतदाचक्ष्व भगवन्का सा ह्यमृतसंभवा। चरत्येकार्णवे घोरे प्रनष्टोरगराक्षसे॥

etadācakṣva bhagavankā sā hyamṛtasaṁbhavā| caratyekārṇave ghore pranaṣṭoragarākṣase||

Tell me this, O lord: who indeed is she, born of the immortals, who moves about in the terrible single ocean, when serpents and rakshasas have all perished?'

Verse 13 (skanda.5.159.13)

मनुरुवाच। शृणु वत्स यथान्यायमस्या वक्ष्यामि संभवम्। यया रुद्रसमुद्भूता या चेयं वरवर्णिनी॥

manuruvāca| śṛṇu vatsa yathānyāyamasyā vakṣyāmi saṁbhavam| yayā rudrasamudbhūtā yā ceyaṁ varavarṇinī||

Manu said: Listen, my child, I shall tell you truly of her origin — how she, this woman of excellent hue, was born of Rudra.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.159.14)

पुरा शिवः शान्ततनुश्चचार विपुलं तपः। हितार्थं सर्वलोकानामुमया सह शंकरः॥

purā śivaḥ śāntatanuścacāra vipulaṁ tapaḥ| hitārthaṁ sarvalokānāmumayā saha śaṁkaraḥ||

Formerly Shiva, of tranquil form, performed vast austerity, together with Uma, for the welfare of all the worlds.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.159.15)

ऋक्षशैलं समारुह्य तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम्। अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां सर्वभूतात्मको वशी॥

ṛkṣaśailaṁ samāruhya tapastepe sudāruṇam| adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ sarvabhūtātmako vaśī||

Having ascended Mount Riksha, he performed most terrible austerity, invisible to all creatures, self-controlled, the very self of all beings.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.159.16)

तपतस्तस्य देवस्य स्वेदः समभवत्किल। तं गिरिं प्लावयामास स स्वेदो रुद्रसंभवः॥

tapatastasya devasya svedaḥ samabhavatkila| taṁ giriṁ plāvayāmāsa sa svedo rudrasaṁbhavaḥ||

As that god performed austerity, sweat indeed arose from his body; that sweat, born of Rudra, flooded the mountain.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.159.17)

तस्मादासीत्समुद्भूता महापुण्या सरिद्वरा। या सा त्वयार्णवे दृष्टा पद्मपत्रायतेक्षणा॥

tasmādāsītsamudbhūtā mahāpuṇyā saridvarā| yā sā tvayārṇave dṛṣṭā padmapatrāyatekṣaṇā||

From it arose that greatly holy, excellent river — she whom you saw in the ocean, with eyes long as lotus petals.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.159.18)

स्त्रीरूपं समवस्थाय रुद्रमाराधयत्पुरा। आद्ये कृतयुगे तस्मिन्समानामयुतं नृप॥

strīrūpaṁ samavasthāya rudramārādhayatpurā| ādye kṛtayuge tasminsamānāmayutaṁ nṛpa||

Having assumed the form of a woman, she worshipped Rudra of old, in that first, Krita age, O king, for ten thousand years.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.159.19)

ततस्तुष्टो महादेव उमया सह शंकरः। ब्रूहि त्वं तु महाभागे यत्ते मनसि वर्तते॥

tatastuṣṭo mahādeva umayā saha śaṁkaraḥ| brūhi tvaṁ tu mahābhāge yatte manasi vartate||

Then Mahadeva Shankara, pleased, together with Uma, said: 'Speak, O greatly fortunate one, whatever is in your mind.'

Verse 20 (skanda.5.159.20)

सरिदुवाच। प्रलये समनुप्राप्ते नष्टे स्थावरजंगमे। प्रसादात्तव देवेश अक्षयाहं भवे प्रभो॥

sariduvāca| pralaye samanuprāpte naṣṭe sthāvarajaṁgame| prasādāttava deveśa akṣayāhaṁ bhave prabho||

The river said: 'When dissolution has come and the moving and unmoving world has perished, by your grace, O lord of gods, O Lord, may I remain imperishable in every creation.'

Verse 21 (skanda.5.159.21)

सरित्सु सागरेष्वेव पर्वतेषु क्षयिष्वपि। तव प्रसादाद्देवेश पुण्या क्षय्या भवे प्रभो॥

saritsu sāgareṣveva parvateṣu kṣayiṣvapi| tava prasādāddeveśa puṇyā kṣayyā bhave prabho||

'When rivers, oceans, and even mountains perish, by your grace, O lord of gods, O Lord, may I remain everlastingly holy in every world-age.'

Verse 22 (skanda.5.159.22)

पापोपपातकैर्युक्ता महापातकिनोऽपि ये। मुच्यन्ते सर्वपापेभ्यो भक्त्या स्नात्वा तु शंकर॥

pāpopapātakairyuktā mahāpātakino'pi ye| mucyante sarvapāpebhyo bhaktyā snātvā tu śaṁkara||

'Those who are joined with sins and minor sins, even the great sinners, O Shankara, may they be freed from all sin by bathing in me with devotion.'

Verse 23 (skanda.5.159.23)

उत्तरे जाह्नवीदेशे महापातकनाशिनी। भवामि दक्षिणे मार्गे यद्येवं सुरपूजिता॥

uttare jāhnavīdeśe mahāpātakanāśinī| bhavāmi dakṣiṇe mārge yadyevaṁ surapūjitā||

'May I, worshipped by the gods, become on my northern bank a destroyer of great sins like the region of the Jahnavi, and likewise on the southern path.'

Verse 24 (skanda.5.159.24)

स्वर्गादागम्य गंगेति यथा ख्याता क्षितौ विभो। तथा दक्षिणगङ्गेति भवेयं त्रिदशेश्वर॥

svargādāgamya gaṁgeti yathā khyātā kṣitau vibho| tathā dakṣiṇagaṅgeti bhaveyaṁ tridaśeśvara||

'As the Ganga, having come down from heaven, O Lord, became renowned on earth, so may I, O lord of the thirty gods, become renowned as the Dakshina-Ganga.'

Verse 25 (skanda.5.159.25)

पृथिव्यां सर्वतीर्थेषु स्नात्वा यल्लभते फलम्। तत्फलं लभते मर्त्यो भक्त्या स्नात्वा महेश्वर॥

pṛthivyāṁ sarvatīrtheṣu snātvā yallabhate phalam| tatphalaṁ labhate martyo bhaktyā snātvā maheśvara||

'The fruit that a mortal obtains by bathing at all the fords on earth, O Maheshvara, may he obtain that fruit by bathing in me with devotion.'

Verse 26 (skanda.5.159.26)

ब्रह्महत्यादिकं पापं यदास्ते संचितं क्वचित्। मासमात्रेण तद्देव क्षयं यात्ववगाहनात्॥

brahmahatyādikaṁ pāpaṁ yadāste saṁcitaṁ kvacit| māsamātreṇa taddeva kṣayaṁ yātvavagāhanāt||

'Whatever sin, beginning with the killing of a brahmin, lies accumulated in anyone, O god, may it come to destruction within a mere month through bathing in me.'

Verse 27 (skanda.5.159.27)

यत्फलं सर्ववेदेषु सर्वयज्ञेषु शंकर। अवगाहेन तत्सर्वं भवत्विति मतिर्मम॥

yatphalaṁ sarvavedeṣu sarvayajñeṣu śaṁkara| avagāhena tatsarvaṁ bhavatviti matirmama||

'Whatever fruit there is in all the Vedas and in all sacrifices, O Shankara, may all that come through bathing in me — such is my wish.'

Verse 28 (skanda.5.159.28)

सर्वदानोपवासेषु सर्वतीर्थावगाहने। तत्फलं मम तोयेन जायतामिति शंकर॥

sarvadānopavāseṣu sarvatīrthāvagāhane| tatphalaṁ mama toyena jāyatāmiti śaṁkara||

'The fruit of all gifts, of all fasts, and of bathing at all the fords — may that fruit, O Shankara, come to be through my waters.'

Verse 29 (skanda.5.159.29)

मम तीरे नरा ये तु अर्चयन्ति महेश्वरम्। ते गतास्तव लोकं स्युरेतदेव भवेच्छिव॥

mama tīre narā ye tu arcayanti maheśvaram| te gatāstava lokaṁ syuretadeva bhavecchiva||

'The men who worship Maheshvara on my banks — may they go to your world; may it be exactly so, O Shiva.'

Verse 30 (skanda.5.159.30)

मम कूले महेशान उमया सह दैवतैः। वस नित्यं जगन्नाथ एष एव वरो मम॥

mama kūle maheśāna umayā saha daivataiḥ| vasa nityaṁ jagannātha eṣa eva varo mama||

'O great Lord, O Lord of the world, dwell ever on my banks, together with Uma and the gods — this alone is my boon.'

Verse 31 (skanda.5.159.31)

सुकर्मा वा विकर्मा वा शान्तो दान्तो जितेन्द्रियः। मृतो जन्तुर्मम जले गच्छतादमरावतीम्॥

sukarmā vā vikarmā vā śānto dānto jitendriyaḥ| mṛto janturmama jale gacchatādamarāvatīm||

'Whether of good deeds or of ill deeds, whether tranquil, self-restrained, or of subdued senses — any creature who dies in my waters, let him go to Amaravati.'

Verse 32 (skanda.5.159.32)

त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्याता महापातकनाशिनी। भवामि देवदेवेश प्रसन्नो यदि मन्यसे॥

triṣu lokeṣu vikhyātā mahāpātakanāśinī| bhavāmi devadeveśa prasanno yadi manyase||

'May I become renowned in the three worlds as a destroyer of great sins, O lord of the gods, if, being pleased, you so will it.'

Verse 33 (skanda.5.159.33)

एतांश्चान्यान्वरान्दिव्यान्प्रार्थितो नृपसत्तम। नर्मदया ततः प्राह प्रसन्नो वृषवाहनः॥

etāṁścānyānvarāndivyānprārthito nṛpasattama| narmadayā tataḥ prāha prasanno vṛṣavāhanaḥ||

Being thus entreated for these and other divine boons, O best of kings, the bull-riding one, pleased, then spoke to Narmada.

Verse 34 (skanda.5.159.34)

श्रीमहेश उवाच। एवं भवतु कल्याणि यत्त्वयोक्तमनिन्दिते। नान्या वरार्हा लोकेषु मुक्त्वा त्वां कमलेक्षणे॥

śrīmaheśa uvāca| evaṁ bhavatu kalyāṇi yattvayoktamanindite| nānyā varārhā lokeṣu muktvā tvāṁ kamalekṣaṇe||

Sri Mahesha said: 'So be it, O auspicious one, whatever you have said, O blameless one; there is no other in the worlds worthy of a boon, save you, O lotus-eyed one.'

Verse 35 (skanda.5.159.35)

यदैव मम देहात्त्वं समुद्भूता वरानने। तदैव सर्वपापानां मोचिनी त्वं न संशयः॥

yadaiva mama dehāttvaṁ samudbhūtā varānane| tadaiva sarvapāpānāṁ mocinī tvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ||

'From the very moment you arose from my body, O fair-faced one, from that very moment you are the releaser from all sins — of this there is no doubt.'

Verse 36 (skanda.5.159.36)

कल्पक्षयकरे काले काले घोरे विशेषतः। उत्तरं कूलमाश्रित्य निवसन्ति च ये नराः॥

kalpakṣayakare kāle kāle ghore viśeṣataḥ| uttaraṁ kūlamāśritya nivasanti ca ye narāḥ||

'At the time that brings about the destruction of the kalpa, at that especially terrible time, those men who dwell resorting to your northern bank —'

Verse 37 (skanda.5.159.37)

अपि कीटपतङ्गाश्च वृक्षगुल्मलतादयः। आ देहपतनाद्देवि तेऽपि यास्यन्ति सद्गतिम्॥

api kīṭapataṅgāśca vṛkṣagulmalatādayaḥ| ā dehapatanāddevi te'pi yāsyanti sadgatim||

'—even insects and moths, trees, shrubs, and creepers, and the rest — O goddess, they too, until the fall of the body, shall go to a good state.'

Verse 38 (skanda.5.159.38)

दक्षिणं कूलमाश्रित्य ये द्विजा धर्मवत्सलाः। आ मृत्योर्निवसिष्यन्ति ते गताः पितृमन्दिरे॥

dakṣiṇaṁ kūlamāśritya ye dvijā dharmavatsalāḥ| ā mṛtyornivasiṣyanti te gatāḥ pitṛmandire||

'Those brahmins devoted to dharma who dwell, resorting to your southern bank, until death — they shall reach the abode of the Fathers.'

Verse 39 (skanda.5.159.39)

अहं हि तव वाक्येन कस्मिंश्चित्कारणान्तरे। त्वत्तीरे निवसिष्यामि सदैव ह्युमया समम्॥

ahaṁ hi tava vākyena kasmiṁścitkāraṇāntare| tvattīre nivasiṣyāmi sadaiva hyumayā samam||

'I myself, at your word, for some particular reason, shall dwell on your bank forever, together with Uma.'

Verse 40 (skanda.5.159.40)

एवं देवि महादेवि एवमेव न संशयः। ब्रह्मेन्द्रचन्द्रवरुणैः साध्यैश्च सह विष्णुना॥

evaṁ devi mahādevi evameva na saṁśayaḥ| brahmendracandravaruṇaiḥ sādhyaiśca saha viṣṇunā||

'So it shall be, O goddess, O great goddess — thus indeed, without doubt. Together with Brahma, Indra, Chandra, Varuna, the Sadhyas, and Vishnu—'

Verse 41 (skanda.5.159.41)

उत्तरे देवि ते कूले वसिष्यन्ति ममाज्ञया। दक्षिणे पितृभिः सार्द्धं तथान्ये सुरसुन्दरि॥

uttare devi te kūle vasiṣyanti mamājñayā| dakṣiṇe pitṛbhiḥ sārddhaṁ tathānye surasundari||

'—by my command they shall dwell on your northern bank, O goddess; and on the southern, together with the Pitrs, others shall dwell, O beautiful one among the gods.'

Verse 42 (skanda.5.159.42)

वसिष्यन्ति मया सार्द्धमेष ते वर उत्तमः। गच्छ गच्छ महाभागे मर्त्यान्पापाद्विमोचय॥

vasiṣyanti mayā sārddhameṣa te vara uttamaḥ| gaccha gaccha mahābhāge martyānpāpādvimocaya||

'They shall dwell together with me — this is your excellent boon. Go, go, O greatly fortunate one, and release mortals from sin,'

Verse 43 (skanda.5.159.43)

सहिता ऋषिसंघैश्च तथा सिद्धसुरासुरैः। एवमुक्ता महादेव उमया सहितो विभुः॥

sahitā ṛṣisaṁghaiśca tathā siddhasurāsuraiḥ| evamuktā mahādeva umayā sahito vibhuḥ||

'—accompanied by throngs of sages, and likewise by Siddhas, gods, and demons.' Thus spoken to, the all-pervading Mahadeva, together with Uma,

Verse 44 (skanda.5.159.44)

वन्द्यमानोऽथ मनुना मया चादर्शनं गतः। तेन चैषा महापुण्या महापातकनाशिनी॥

vandyamāno'tha manunā mayā cādarśanaṁ gataḥ| tena caiṣā mahāpuṇyā mahāpātakanāśinī||

being venerated then by Manu and by me, passed out of sight. And thus this greatly holy river, destroyer of great sins,

Verse 45 (skanda.5.159.45)

कथिता पृच्छ्यते या ते मा ते भवतु विस्मयः। एषा गंगा महापुण्या त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता॥

kathitā pṛcchyate yā te mā te bhavatu vismayaḥ| eṣā gaṁgā mahāpuṇyā triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā||

has been told of, she about whom you asked — let there be no astonishment in you. This is the greatly holy Ganga, renowned in the three worlds,

Verse 46 (skanda.5.159.46)

दशाभिः पञ्चभिः स्रोतैः प्लावयन्ती दिशो दश। शोणो महानदश्चैव नर्मदा सुरसा कृता॥

daśābhiḥ pañcabhiḥ srotaiḥ plāvayantī diśo daśa| śoṇo mahānadaścaiva narmadā surasā kṛtā||

flooding the ten directions with her fifteen streams — Shona the great river, and Narmada made into Surasa,

Verse 47 (skanda.5.159.47)

मन्दाकिनी दशार्णा च चित्रकूटा तथैव च। तमसा विदिशा चैव करभा यमुना तथा॥

mandākinī daśārṇā ca citrakūṭā tathaiva ca| tamasā vidiśā caiva karabhā yamunā tathā||

the Mandakini, Dasharna, Chitrakuta, Tamasa, Vidisha, Karabha, and Yamuna,

Verse 48 (skanda.5.159.48)

चित्रोत्पला विपाशा च रञ्जना वालुवाहिनी। ऋक्षपादप्रसूतास्ताः सर्वा वै रुद्रसंभवाः॥

citrotpalā vipāśā ca rañjanā vāluvāhinī| ṛkṣapādaprasūtāstāḥ sarvā vai rudrasaṁbhavāḥ||

the Chitrotpala, the Vipasha, the Ranjana, and the Valuvahini — all these were born of Rikshapada, sprung indeed from Rudra.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.159.49)

सर्वपापहराः पुण्याः सर्वमंगलदाः शिवाः। इत्येतैर्नामभिर्दिव्यैः स्तूयते वेदपारगैः॥

sarvapāpaharāḥ puṇyāḥ sarvamaṁgaladāḥ śivāḥ| ityetairnāmabhirdivyaiḥ stūyate vedapāragaiḥ||

All removers of sin, holy, granters of all auspiciousness, benign — by these divine names is she praised by those versed in the Vedas,

Verse 50 (skanda.5.159.50)

पुराणज्ञैर्महाभागैराज्यपैः सोमपैस्तथा। इत्येतत्सर्वमाख्यातं महाभाग्यं नरोत्तम॥

purāṇajñairmahābhāgairājyapaiḥ somapaistathā| ityetatsarvamākhyātaṁ mahābhāgyaṁ narottama||

by knowers of the Puranas, by the greatly fortunate, by drinkers of ghee-offerings and of soma. Thus, O best of men, has all this great good fortune been told.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.159.51)

मनुनोक्तं पुरा मह्यममृतायाः समुद्भवम्। पुण्यं पवित्रमतुलं रुद्रोद्गीतमिदं शुभम्॥

manunoktaṁ purā mahyamamṛtāyāḥ samudbhavam| puṇyaṁ pavitramatulaṁ rudrodgītamidaṁ śubham||

This — the origin of the immortal one, holy, purifying, incomparable, this auspicious hymn sung forth by Rudra — was told to me of old by Manu.

Verse 52 (skanda.5.159.52)

ये नराः कीर्तयिष्यन्ति भक्त्या शृण्वन्ति येऽपि च। प्रातरुत्थाय नामानि दश पञ्च च भारत॥

ye narāḥ kīrtayiṣyanti bhaktyā śṛṇvanti ye'pi ca| prātarutthāya nāmāni daśa pañca ca bhārata||

O descendant of Bharata, those men who shall recite with devotion, and those too who shall hear, rising at dawn, these fifteen names —

ते नराः सकलं पुण्यं लभिष्यन्त्यवगाहजम्। विमानेनार्कवर्णेन घण्टाशतनिनादिना॥

te narāḥ sakalaṁ puṇyaṁ labhiṣyantyavagāhajam| vimānenārkavarṇena ghaṇṭāśataninādinā||

those men shall obtain the entire merit born of bathing in her; and, in a chariot of sun-like hue, resounding with a hundred bells,

त्यक्त्वा मानुष्यकं भावं यास्यन्ति परमां गतिम्॥

tyaktvā mānuṣyakaṁ bhāvaṁ yāsyanti paramāṁ gatim||

having left their human state, they shall go to the supreme state.
