The Glory of Dashashvamedha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.17.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। दशाश्वमेधिके स्नात्वा दृष्ट्वा देवं महेश्वरम्। दशानामश्वमेधानां फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः

sanatkumāra uvāca| daśāśvamedhike snātvā dṛṣṭvā devaṁ maheśvaram| daśānāmaśvamedhānāṁ phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Bathing at Dashashvamedhika and beholding the god Maheshvara, a man obtains the fruit of ten Ashvamedha sacrifices.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.17.2)

मनुना मानवेन्द्रेण राज्ञा चैव ययातिना। रघुणोशनसा चैव लोमशेन महर्षिणा

manunā mānavendreṇa rājñā caiva yayātinā| raghuṇośanasā caiva lomaśena maharṣiṇā

Verse 3 (skanda.5.17.3)

अत्रिणा भृगुणा व्यास दत्तात्रेयेण धीमता। पुरूरवसा पुण्येन नहुषेण नलेन च

atriṇā bhṛguṇā vyāsa dattātreyeṇa dhīmatā| purūravasā puṇyena nahuṣeṇa nalena ca

Verse 4 (skanda.5.17.4)

अत्र स्नानेन संप्राप्तं दशाश्वमेधिकं फलम्। संप्राप्ते द्वापरस्यांते राज्ञा बाष्कलिना तथा

atra snānena saṁprāptaṁ daśāśvamedhikaṁ phalam| saṁprāpte dvāparasyāṁte rājñā bāṣkalinā tathā

...the fruit of ten Ashvamedhas was attained here through bathing. At the end of the Dvapara age, likewise by King Bashkali...

Verse 5 (skanda.5.17.5)

दशानामश्वमेधानां फलं प्राप्तं द्विजोत्तम। कृष्णवर्णं तथा लिंगं पूजितं भक्तितः सदा

daśānāmaśvamedhānāṁ phalaṁ prāptaṁ dvijottama| kṛṣṇavarṇaṁ tathā liṁgaṁ pūjitaṁ bhaktitaḥ sadā

...O foremost of the twice-born, the fruit of ten Ashvamedhas was obtained. There, that black-hued linga is ever worshipped with devotion.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.17.6)

दृष्ट्वा स्पृष्ट्वा च तं देवं प्रागुक्तं लभते फलम्। चैत्रे मासि सिताष्टम्यां देवं संपूज्य भक्तितः

dṛṣṭvā spṛṣṭvā ca taṁ devaṁ prāguktaṁ labhate phalam| caitre māsi sitāṣṭamyāṁ devaṁ saṁpūjya bhaktitaḥ

By beholding and touching that god one obtains the fruit already spoken of; and, in the month of Chaitra, on the bright eighth day, having worshipped the god with devotion...

Verse 7 (skanda.5.17.7)

अश्वं दद्याच्च विप्राय सुरूपं च गुणान्वितम्। यावंति तस्य रोमाणि गण्यंते संख्यया द्विज

aśvaṁ dadyācca viprāya surūpaṁ ca guṇānvitam| yāvaṁti tasya romāṇi gaṇyaṁte saṁkhyayā dvija

...one should give a Brahmin a horse of fine form and good qualities; and, O twice-born, for as many hairs as are counted upon it...

Verse 8 (skanda.5.17.8)

तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि शिवलोके महीयते। शिवलोकात्परिभ्रष्टः सार्वभौमो भवेद्भुवि

tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi śivaloke mahīyate| śivalokātparibhraṣṭaḥ sārvabhaumo bhavedbhuvi

...for that many thousand years he is honoured in the world of Shiva; and, fallen from the world of Shiva, he becomes a sovereign of the whole earth.
