gazed for a long while, his eyes red with fury; and, meditating on that supreme mantra and restraining himself,

Verse 23 (skanda.5.183.23)

mumoca sahasā bāṇaṁ purasya vadhakāṅkṣayā | yadā trīṇi sametāni antarikṣasthitāni tu

he suddenly released the arrow, desiring the city's destruction, when the three cities became aligned together in the sky.

tataḥ kālanimeṣārdhaṁ dṛṣṭvaikyaṁ tripurasya ca | triparvaṇā triśalyena tatastānyavasādayat

aṭṭahāsān pramuñcanti kaṣṭarūpā narāstadā | nimeṣonmeṣaṇaṁ caiva kurvanti lipikarmasu

the people, taking on wretched forms, burst into wild laughter; even engaged in writing, they merely kept blinking their eyes —

niṣpandanayanā martyāścitreṣvālikhitā iva | devāyatanagā devā raṭanti prahasanti ca | svapne paśyanti cātmānaṁ raktāmbaravibhūṣitam

as if their eyes, like those of figures painted in pictures, had frozen; the gods in the temples cried out and laughed; and people saw themselves in dreams clothed in red garments,

Verse 28 (skanda.5.183.28)

Verse 34 (skanda.5.183.34)

jvalati pādapāstatra parṇāni ca sabhaṁ tataḥ | sarvaṁ tadvyākulībhūtaṁ hāhākārasamanvitam

trees and leaves there caught fire, and then the assembly-hall; all fell into confusion, filled with cries of woe,

Verse 35 (skanda.5.183.35)

udyānāni vicitrāṇi prababhañja prabhañjanaḥ | tena saṁpreritāḥ sarve jvalanti viśikhāḥ śikhāḥ

the fierce wind shattered the wondrous gardens; driven by it, all the arrow-flames blazed still more fiercely,

Verse 36 (skanda.5.183.36)

everything, blazing, appeared like the leaves of the flame-of-the-forest tree; because of the smoke, it became impossible to go from house to house,

and, as if dancing, pervading every quarter, it rushed into the forests, into all the temples, houses, and towers,

Verse 41 (skanda.5.183.41)

and, O best of kings, tormented by the flames, embracing one another, all, burning, fell senseless.

Verse 45 (skanda.5.183.45)

Other demons there too, bewildered by the fire, burned, their faces choked with smoke, unable to go elsewhere; the lotus-ponds thronged with swans and karandavas, their lotuses golden,

Verse 46 (skanda.5.183.46)

O Bharata, various step-wells and wells there burned; the city's parks and long pools, covered with unwithered lotuses and stretching over eight yojanas, were seen scorched by fire,

Verse 47 (skanda.5.183.47)

girikūṭanibhāstatra prāsādā ratnaśobhitāḥ | dṛśyante'nalasaṁdagdhā viśīrṇā dharaṇītale

and the mansions there, resembling mountain-peaks and adorned with gems, were seen burnt by fire, shattered upon the ground.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.183.48)
