Avanti Khanda · Chapter 19
The Glory of Harasiddhi
Verse 1 (skanda.5.19.1)
sanatkumāra uvāca athātaḥ saṁpravakṣyāmi harasiddhiṁ susiddhidām pārvatyā haraṇe yatra siddhiḥ prāptā hareṇa ca
Sanatkumāra said: "Now I shall proclaim Harasiddhi, the bestower of perfect accomplishment — the place where, through Pārvatī's destroying of the demons, Hara himself obtained his triumph."
Verse 2 (skanda.5.19.2)
balinau dānavau jātau nāmnā caṇḍapracaṁḍakau utkhāya tridivaṁ sarvaṁ giriṁ kailāsamāgatau
Two mighty dānavas were born, named Chaṇḍa and Prachaṇḍaka; having uprooted the whole triple heaven, they came to Mount Kailāsa.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.19.3)
dṛṣṭvā tatra girīśaṁ tu udyatākṣākṣahastakam nāgeśaṁ śaśikhaṭvāṁgaṁ gṛhītvā dakṣiṇe kare
There they beheld the Lord of the Mountain, his hand raised with a rosary, holding in his right hand the serpent-lord and the moon-crested skull-staff.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.19.4)
devidevīti jalpaṁtaṁ dāsaste'smīti vādinam yāvadekaṁ tu phalakaṁ tāvaddyūtaṁ pravartatām
He was murmuring, "O Devī, O Devī," saying, "I am your servant," while a game of dice, lasting the space of a single throw, went on between them.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.19.5)
rāgībhūte tadā deve tau prāptau devakaṁṭakau utsāditāḥ śivagaṇā naṁdinā pratiṣedhitau
While the god was thus engrossed in the game, those two thorns of the gods arrived; Shiva's attendants were routed, but the two were opposed by Nandin.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.19.6)
tatastābhyāṁ tadā naṁdī śūlābhyāṁ pravidāritaḥ samaṁ savyadakṣiṇaṁ vai susrāva rudhiraṁ bahu
Then Nandin was pierced by the two of them with their tridents; blood flowed copiously and equally from both his left and right sides.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.19.7)
naṁdinaṁ tāḍitaṁ dṛṣṭvā tadā śilādanaṁdanam dhyātā hareṇa sā devī praṇatā sā'grataḥ sthitā
Seeing Nandin, son of Śilāda, thus struck down, that Goddess — on whom Hara ever meditates — bowed low and stood forth before him.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.19.8)
vadhyatāṁ tau mahādaityau vadhāmīti vaco'bravīt gṛhītvā mudgaraṁ ghoramatikrodhādatāḍayat
"Let those two great daityas be slain — I myself shall slay them," so she spoke; and, seizing a terrible mace, in utmost fury she struck them down.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.19.9)
yadā tayā hatau dṛṣṭau dānavau balagavitau harastāmāha he caṁḍi saṁhṛtau duṣṭadānavau
When the two dānavas, proud of their strength, were seen slain by her, Hara said to her: "O Chaṇḍī, the two wicked dānavas are destroyed!"
Verse 10 (skanda.5.19.10)
harasiddhirato loke nāmnā khyātiṁ gamiṣyasi tataḥ prabhṛti sā devī harasiddhi pradāyinī harasiddhiriti khyātā mahākāle babhūva ha
"Henceforth in the world you shall attain fame under the name Harasiddhi." From that time onward, that Goddess, the bestower of Hara's accomplishment, became renowned at Mahākāla by the name Harasiddhi.
Verse 11 (skanda.5.19.11)
yaḥ paśyetparayā bhaktyā harasiddhiṁ narottamaḥ so'kṣayā~llabhate kāmānmṛtaḥ śivapuraṁ vrajet
The best of men who beholds Harasiddhi with supreme devotion obtains inexhaustible desires, and after death goes to Śivapura.
Verse 12 (skanda.5.19.12)
ādisiddhiṁ mahādevīṁ nityāṁ vyomasvarūpiṇīm harasiddhiṁ prapaśyedyaḥ so'bhīṣṭaṁ labhate phalam
He who beholds Harasiddhi, the primal Siddhi, the great Goddess, eternal, whose true nature is the sky itself, obtains the fruit he desires.
Verse 13 (skanda.5.19.13)
yaḥ smareddharasiddhīti maṁtraṁ ca caturakṣaram na vairiṇo bhayaṁ tasya dāridryaṁ naiva jāyate
He who recalls the four-syllabled mantra "Harasiddhi" has no fear of enemies, and poverty never befalls him.
Verse 14 (skanda.5.19.14)
naro mahānavamyāṁ yo harasiddhiṁ prapūjayet mahiṣaṁ ca baliṁ dadyātsa bhavedbhūpatirbhuvi
The man who worships Harasiddhi on the great Navamī and offers a buffalo in sacrifice becomes a king on earth.
Verse 15 (skanda.5.19.15)
navamyāṁ pūjitā devī harasiddhirharapriyā tuṣṭā nṛṇāṁ sadā vyāsa dadātyanavamaṁ phalam
O Vyāsa, the Goddess Harasiddhi, beloved of Hara, when worshipped on the Navamī, is ever pleased and grants men unfailing fruit.
Verse 16 (skanda.5.19.16)
sā puṇyā sā pavitrā ca sarvatra sukhadāyinī smṛtā saṁpūjitā dṛṣṭā dhanaputrasukhapradā
She is holy, she is pure, everywhere a bestower of happiness; remembered, worshipped, or beheld, she grants wealth, sons, and happiness.
Verse 17 (skanda.5.19.17)
O Vyāsa, whatever buffaloes and the like are slain on the great Navamī, all of them attain the path of heaven, and no sin accrues to those who slay them.
