The Glory of Hanumatkeshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.5.21.1)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथान्यत्संप्रवक्ष्यामि देवं त्रिदशपूजितम् । हनुमत्केश्वरंनाम भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदम्
sanatkumāra uvāca athānyatsaṁpravakṣyāmi devaṁ tridaśapūjitam hanumatkeśvaraṁnāma bhuktimuktiphalapradam
Sanatkumāra said: "Now I shall declare another god, worshipped by the thirty gods, named Hanumatkeśvara, the bestower of both worldly enjoyment and liberation."
Verse 2 (skanda.5.21.2)
शैवे सरसि यः स्नात्वा पश्येद्धनुमत्केश्वरम् । कल्पकोटिसहस्राणि वायुलोके स मोदते
śaive sarasi yaḥ snātvā paśyeddhanumatkeśvaram kalpakoṭisahasrāṇi vāyuloke sa modate
He who bathes in the Śaiva lake and beholds Hanumatkeśvara rejoices in the world of Vāyu for a thousand crore kalpas.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.21.3)
व्यास उवाच । हनुमत्केश्वरो यस्तु ह्युक्तः पूर्वं त्वयाऽनघ । कथां कथय ह्येतस्य वृत्तपूर्वां सनातनीम्
vyāsa uvāca hanumatkeśvaro yastu hyuktaḥ pūrvaṁ tvayā'nagha kathāṁ kathaya hyetasya vṛttapūrvāṁ sanātanīm
Vyāsa said: "O sinless one, tell me the ancient, timeless tale of this Hanumatkeśvara, of whom you have just spoken."
Verse 4 (skanda.5.21.4)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । त्रैलोक्यकण्टकः पूर्वं रावणो नाम राक्षसः । विष्णुना रामरूपेण लंकायां विनिपातितः
sanatkumāra uvāca trailokyakaṇṭakaḥ pūrvaṁ rāvaṇo nāma rākṣasaḥ viṣṇunā rāmarūpeṇa laṁkāyāṁ vinipātitaḥ
Sanatkumāra said: "Formerly, the rākṣasa named Rāvaṇa, a thorn to the three worlds, was struck down in Laṅkā by Viṣṇu in the form of Rāma."
Verse 5 (skanda.5.21.5)
घातयित्वा तु तं दुष्टं सीतामादाय जानकीम् । वानरैः सह ऋक्षैश्च नगरीं स्वामुपागतः
ghātayitvā tu taṁ duṣṭaṁ sītāmādāya jānakīm vānaraiḥ saha ṛkṣaiśca nagarīṁ svāmupāgataḥ
Having slain that wicked one, and taking Sītā Jānakī, Rāma, together with the monkeys and bears, returned to his own city.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.21.6)
तत्र राज्यमनुप्राप्य ऋषिभिः परिवारितः । कथावसाने रामेण ह्यगस्त्यो मुनिसत्तमः
tatra rājyamanuprāpya ṛṣibhiḥ parivāritaḥ kathāvasāne rāmeṇa hyagastyo munisattamaḥ
There, having obtained the kingdom, surrounded by sages, at the end of a discourse, Agastya, best of sages --
Verse 7 (skanda.5.21.7)
पप्रच्छ च द्वयोर्वीर्यं शंभुवातजयोस्तदा । तदा दाशरथिं प्राह अग स्तिर्मुनिसत्तमः
papraccha ca dvayorvīryaṁ śaṁbhuvātajayostadā tadā dāśarathiṁ prāha aga stirmunisattamaḥ
-- was then asked about the valour of the two, Śambhu and the son of Vāyu. Then Agastya, best of sages, spoke to the son of Daśaratha --
Verse 8 (skanda.5.21.8)
अनौपम्यो यथा देवो युद्धे शौर्ये महेश्वरः । ज्ञेयो वायुसुतस्तद्वत्सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते
anaupamyo yathā devo yuddhe śaurye maheśvaraḥ jñeyo vāyusutastadvatsatyametadbravīmi te
"As the god Maheśvara is without equal in valour in battle, so is the son of Vāyu to be known as his equal — this truth I speak to you."
Verse 9 (skanda.5.21.9)
एतच्छुत्वाथ हनुमान्यद्धरेणो पमा मम । कृता मुनिवरेणेह प्रत्यक्षं राघवस्य ह
etacchutvātha hanumānyaddhareṇo pamā mama kṛtā munivareṇeha pratyakṣaṁ rāghavasya ha
Hearing this, Hanumān thought: "That I have been compared with Hara by this best of sages, here in the very presence of Rāghava --"
Verse 10 (skanda.5.21.10)
गमिष्ये नगरीं लंकां लिंगमेकं प्रयाचितुम् । राक्षसेन्द्रं महाभागं विभीषणमकल्म षम्
gamiṣye nagarīṁ laṁkāṁ liṁgamekaṁ prayācitum rākṣasendraṁ mahābhāgaṁ vibhīṣaṇamakalma ṣam
"-- I shall go to the city of Laṅkā to beg a single liṅga from the illustrious and sinless lord of the rākṣasas, Vibhīṣaṇa."
Verse 11 (skanda.5.21.11)
ततो गतः स लंकायां विभीषणमुवाच ह । देहि मे त्वं महाभाग लिंगमेकं च शोभनम्
tato gataḥ sa laṁkāyāṁ vibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha dehi me tvaṁ mahābhāga liṁgamekaṁ ca śobhanam
Then he went to Laṅkā and spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa: "O illustrious one, give me a single beautiful liṅga."
Verse 12 (skanda.5.21.12)
उक्तं च राक्षसेन्द्रेण गृहाणैतद्यथा रुचि । एतानि षट् च लिंगानि रावणस्थापितानि वै
uktaṁ ca rākṣasendreṇa gṛhāṇaitadyathā ruci etāni ṣaṭ ca liṁgāni rāvaṇasthāpitāni vai
The lord of the rākṣasas replied: "Take whichever you please of these; these six liṅgas were indeed installed by Rāvaṇa --"
Verse 13 (skanda.5.21.13)
त्रैलोक्यविजयात्पूर्वं मम भ्रात्रा महात्मना । एतेषु यदभीष्टं ते लिंगं कथय सुव्रत । तत्प्रयच्छामि तेऽद्यैव सत्यमेतत्प्लवंगम
trailokyavijayātpūrvaṁ mama bhrātrā mahātmanā eteṣu yadabhīṣṭaṁ te liṁgaṁ kathaya suvrata tatprayacchāmi te'dyaiva satyametatplavaṁgama
"-- by my great-souled brother, before his conquest of the three worlds. Tell me, O of good vows, which of these liṅgas you desire; I shall give it to you this very day — this is the truth, O monkey."
Verse 14 (skanda.5.21.14)
ततो जग्राह हनुमाँल्लिंगं मौक्तिकसंनिभम् । यदेतद्दृश्यते वीर तत्प्रयच्छ ममानघ
tato jagrāha hanumā~lliṁgaṁ mauktikasaṁnibham yadetaddṛśyate vīra tatprayaccha mamānagha
Then Hanumān chose the liṅga resembling a pearl, saying: "O hero, sinless one, give me this one that is seen here."
Verse 15 (skanda.5.21.15)
श्रुत्वा हनुमतो वाक्यमथोवाच विभीषणः । दत्तमेतन्महावीर लिंगं यद्धृतवानसि
śrutvā hanumato vākyamathovāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ dattametanmahāvīra liṁgaṁ yaddhṛtavānasi
Hearing Hanumān's words, Vibhīṣaṇa then said: "O great hero, this liṅga which you now hold is given to you."
Verse 16 (skanda.5.21.16)
श्रूयते हि पुरावृत्तं लिंगमेतद्धनेश्वरः । रुद्र भक्त्या समायुक्तस्त्रिकालमप्यपूजयत्
śrūyate hi purāvṛttaṁ liṁgametaddhaneśvaraḥ rudra bhaktyā samāyuktastrikālamapyapūjayat
"It is heard that of old this very liṅga was worshipped, with devotion to Rudra, three times a day by Dhaneśvara, the lord of wealth."
Verse 17 (skanda.5.21.17)
रावणेन यदा बद्धस्तदानीं हि धनेश्वरः । लिंगस्यास्य प्रभावेन विमुक्तः समपद्यत
rāvaṇena yadā baddhastadānīṁ hi dhaneśvaraḥ liṁgasyāsya prabhāvena vimuktaḥ samapadyata
"When Dhaneśvara was once held captive by Rāvaṇa, it was by the power of this very liṅga that he came to be released."
Verse 18 (skanda.5.21.18)
प्रसादात्तस्य लिंगस्य धनेशो धनरक्षकः । गृहीत्वा तन्महालिंगं स्वस्थो जातोऽथ वानरः
prasādāttasya liṁgasya dhaneśo dhanarakṣakaḥ gṛhītvā tanmahāliṁgaṁ svastho jāto'tha vānaraḥ
"By the grace of that liṅga, Dhaneśa, guardian of wealth, was freed." Having taken that great liṅga, the monkey Hanumān became content.
Verse 19 (skanda.5.21.19)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । गृहीत्वा तु ततो लिंगं प्रस्थितो विमलेंऽबरे । सप्तमे दिवसे चैव संप्राप्तोऽवंतिकां पुरीम्
sanatkumāra uvāca gṛhītvā tu tato liṁgaṁ prasthito vimaleṁ'bare saptame divase caiva saṁprāpto'vaṁtikāṁ purīm
Sanatkumāra said: "Then, having taken the liṅga, he set out through the clear sky, and on the seventh day arrived at the city of Avantikā."
Verse 20 (skanda.5.21.20)
तत्र रुद्रसरस्तीरे स्थाप्य स्नानमथाकरोत् । महाकालस्य पूजार्थं गमनं प्रत्यचिंतयत्
tatra rudrasarastīre sthāpya snānamathākarot mahākālasya pūjārthaṁ gamanaṁ pratyaciṁtayat
"There, having set the liṅga down on the bank of Rudra-saras, he bathed, and resolved to go on to worship Mahākāla."
Verse 21 (skanda.5.21.21)
उद्धर्तुकामस्तल्लिगमुद्धर्तुं न शशाक सः
uddhartukāmastalligamuddhartuṁ na śaśāka saḥ
But, wishing afterward to lift up that liṅga again, he was unable to lift it.
Verse 22 (skanda.5.21.22)
ततो व्यवस्थितो देवः प्राह तं वायुनन्दनम् । अस्मिन्क्षेत्रे हनूमन्मां त्वन्नाम्नैव प्रतिष्ठापय
tato vyavasthito devaḥ prāha taṁ vāyunandanam asminkṣetre hanūmanmāṁ tvannāmnaiva pratiṣṭhāpaya
Then the god, having become fixed in that spot, spoke to the son of Vāyu: "O Hanumān, establish me in this very place, under your own name."
Verse 23 (skanda.5.21.23)
हनुमत्केश्वरं चाथ लोके ख्यातं भविष्यति । शैलवच्चोन्नतं लिंगं स्थापितं वायुसूनुना
hanumatkeśvaraṁ cātha loke khyātaṁ bhaviṣyati śailavacconnataṁ liṁgaṁ sthāpitaṁ vāyusūnunā
"And I shall become known in the world as Hanumatkeśvara." So the liṅga, lofty as a mountain, was established by the son of Vāyu.
Verse 24 (skanda.5.21.24)
शनौ पश्येन्नरो यस्तु हनुमत्केश्वरं शिवम् । तस्य शत्रुभयं नास्ति संग्रामे जयमाप्नुयात्
śanau paśyennaro yastu hanumatkeśvaraṁ śivam tasya śatrubhayaṁ nāsti saṁgrāme jayamāpnuyāt
The man who beholds Śiva as Hanumatkeśvara on a Saturday has no fear of enemies, and obtains victory in battle.
Verse 25 (skanda.5.21.25)
न च चौरभयं तस्य न दारिद्र्यं न दुर्गतिः । तैलाभिषेकं यः कुर्याद्धनुमत्केश्वरे शिवे
na ca caurabhayaṁ tasya na dāridryaṁ na durgatiḥ tailābhiṣekaṁ yaḥ kuryāddhanumatkeśvare śive
He has no fear of thieves, no poverty, no evil fate. He who performs an oil-anointing of Śiva Hanumatkeśvara --
Verse 26 (skanda.5.21.26)
तस्य रोगाः प्रलीयन्ते ग्रहपीडा न जायते । ये द्रक्ष्यंति नराः भक्त्या तेषां मोक्षो भविष्यति
tasya rogāḥ pralīyante grahapīḍā na jāyate ye drakṣyaṁti narāḥ bhaktyā teṣāṁ mokṣo bhaviṣyati
-- his diseases dissolve away, and no affliction by planets befalls him. Those men who behold him with devotion shall obtain liberation.
