Chapter 213All chaptersChapter 215

Verse 1 (skanda.5.214.1)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tataḥ puṣkariṇīṁ gacchetsarvapāpapraṇāśinīm| śrute yasyāḥ prabhāve tu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate||

Shri Markandeya said: "Thereafter one should go to Pushkarini, destroyer of all sin; hearing of whose power alone, a man is freed from all sins.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.214.2)

revāyā uttare kūle tīrthaṁ paramaśobhanam| yatrāste sarvadā devo vedamūrtirdivākaraḥ||

On the northern bank of the Reva is a most beautiful tirtha, where the God Divakara, the embodiment of the Veda, dwells always.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.214.3)

kurukṣetraṁ yathā puṇyaṁ sārvakāmikamuttamam| idaṁ tīrthaṁ tathā puṇyaṁ sarvakāmaphalapradam||

Just as Kurukshetra is sacred, supreme, fulfilling every desire, so too is this tirtha sacred, bestowing the fruit of every desire.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.214.4)

kurukṣetre yathā vṛddhirdānasya jagatīpate| puṣkariṇyāṁ tathā dānaṁ vardhate nātra saṁśayaḥ||

O lord of the earth, just as a gift given at Kurukshetra is multiplied, so too is a gift multiplied at Pushkarini — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.214.5)

yavamekaṁ tu yo dadyātsauvarṇaṁ mastake nṛpa| puṣkariṇyāṁ tathā sthānaṁ yathā sthānaṁ nare smṛtam||

O king, whoever offers even a single grain of barley, gilded, upon the head, obtains at Pushkarini the same merit that is remembered elsewhere for a man's offering.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.214.6)

sūryagrahe tu yaḥ snātvā dadyāddānaṁ yathāvidhi| hastyaśvaratharatnādi gṛhaṁ gāśca yugaṁdharān||

Whoever bathes at a solar eclipse and gives gifts according to rule — elephants, horses, chariots, jewels and the like, a house, cows, and a yoke of oxen,

Verse 7 (skanda.5.214.7)

suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ vāpi brāhmaṇebhyo dadāti yaḥ| trayodaśa dinaṁ yāvattrayodaśaguṇaṁ bhavet||

or gold or silver, to brahmins — for thirteen days its merit becomes thirteenfold.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.214.8)

tilamiśreṇa toyena tarpayetpitṛdevatāḥ| dvādaśābde bhavetprītistatra tīrthe mahīpate||

Let him offer libation to the ancestor-gods with water mixed with sesame; O lord of the earth, satisfaction arises there for twelve years at that tirtha.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.214.9)

yastatra kurute śrāddhaṁ pāyasairmadhusarpiṣā| śrāddhado labhate svargaṁ pitḥṇāṁ dattamakṣayam||

Whoever performs the shraddha there with rice-pudding, honey and ghee — the giver of the shraddha obtains heaven; what is given to the ancestors becomes imperishable.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.214.10)

akṣatairbadarairbilvairiṅgudairvā tilaiḥ saha| akṣayaṁ phalamāpnoti tasmiṁstīrthe na saṁśayaḥ||

By offering unbroken rice, jujube fruit, bilva fruit, or ingudi fruit together with sesame, one obtains imperishable fruit at that tirtha — there is no doubt.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.214.11)

tatra snātvā tu yo devaṁ pūjayecca divākaram| ādityahṛdayaṁ japtvā punarādityamarcayet| sa gacchetparamaṁ lokaṁ tridaśairapi vanditam||

Whoever bathes there and worships the God Divakara, and, having recited the Adityahridaya, worships Aditya again, attains the supreme world, honoured even by the thirty gods.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.214.12)

ṛcamekāṁ japedyastu yajurvā sāma eva ca| sa samagrasya vedasya phalamāpnoti vai nṛpa||

O king, whoever recites even a single verse of the Rig, Yajur, or Sama Veda there obtains the fruit of the entire Veda.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.214.13)

yastryakṣaraṁ japenmantraṁ dhyāyamāno divākaram| ādityahṛdayaṁ japtvā mucyate sarvapātakaiḥ||

Whoever, meditating upon Divakara, recites the three-syllabled mantra, and recites the Adityahridaya, is freed from all sins.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.214.14)

yastatra vidhivatprāṇāṁstyajate nṛpasattama| sa gacchetparamaṁ sthānaṁ yatra devo divākaraḥ||

O best of kings, whoever duly gives up his life there attains that supreme abode where the God Divakara dwells."
