The Glory of Shankhachuda Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.230.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। नर्मदादक्षिणे कूले तीर्थं परमशोभनम्। शङ्खचूडस्य नाम्ना वै प्रसिद्धं भूमिमण्डले

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| narmadādakṣiṇe kūle tīrthaṁ paramaśobhanam| śaṅkhacūḍasya nāmnā vai prasiddhaṁ bhūmimaṇḍale

Shri Markandeya said: On the southern bank of the Narmada is a most beautiful tirtha, renowned on this earth by the name Shankhachuda.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.230.2)

शङ्खचूडः स्वयं तत्र संस्थितः पाण्डुनन्दन। वैनतेयभयात्पार्थ सुखदनर्मदातटे

śaṅkhacūḍaḥ svayaṁ tatra saṁsthitaḥ pāṇḍunandana| vainateyabhayātpārtha sukhadanarmadātaṭe

There, O son of Pandu, Shankhachuda himself dwells, on the pleasant bank of the Narmada, out of fear of Vainateya (Garuda), O Partha.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.230.3)

तत्र तीर्थे तु यो भक्त्या शुचिर्भूत्वा समाहितः। स्नापयेच्छङ्खचूडं तु क्षीरक्षौद्रेण सर्पिषा

tatra tīrthe tu yo bhaktyā śucirbhūtvā samāhitaḥ| snāpayecchaṅkhacūḍaṁ tu kṣīrakṣaudreṇa sarpiṣā

There at that tirtha, whoever, pure and composed, with devotion bathes Shankhachuda with milk, honey and ghee,

Verse 4 (skanda.5.230.4)

रात्रौ जागरणं कुर्याद्देवस्याग्रे नराधिप। दधिभक्तेन सम्पूज्य ब्राह्मणाञ्छंसितव्रतान्। गोप्रदाने द्विजेन्द्रोऽयं सर्वपापक्षयंकरः

rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kuryāddevasyāgre narādhipa| dadhibhaktena sampūjya brāhmaṇāñchaṁsitavratān| gopradāne dvijendro'yaṁ sarvapāpakṣayaṁkaraḥ

and keeps night-vigil before the deity, O lord of men, and honours brahmins of excellent vows with curds and food — and offers the gift of a cow — this lord of serpents becomes the destroyer of every sin.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.230.5)

तस्मिंस्तीर्थे तु यः पार्थ सर्पदष्टं प्रतर्पयेत्। स याति परमं लोकं शङ्करस्य वचो यथा

tasmiṁstīrthe tu yaḥ pārtha sarpadaṣṭaṁ pratarpayet| sa yāti paramaṁ lokaṁ śaṅkarasya vaco yathā

There at that tirtha, O Partha, whoever offers tarpana for one who died of snakebite, attains the highest world — so runs the word of Shankara.
