The Glory of Bhimeshvara Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.232.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। भीमेश्वरं ततो गच्छेत्सर्वपापक्षयंकरम्। सेवितं ऋषिसङ्घैश्च भीमव्रतधरैः शुभैः

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| bhīmeśvaraṁ tato gacchetsarvapāpakṣayaṁkaram| sevitaṁ ṛṣisaṅghaiśca bhīmavratadharaiḥ śubhaiḥ

Shri Markandeya said: Then go to Bhimeshvara, destroyer of every sin, served by companies of sages who hold the severe (bhima) vow, all of them auspicious.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.232.2)

तत्र तीर्थे तु यः स्नात्वा सोपवासो जितेन्द्रियः। जपेदेकाक्षरं मन्त्रमूर्ध्वबाहुर्दिवाकरे

tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ snātvā sopavāso jitendriyaḥ| japedekākṣaraṁ mantramūrdhvabāhurdivākare

There at that tirtha, whoever bathes, fasts, and, self-controlled, with arms raised, recites the single-syllable mantra (Om) facing the sun,

Verse 3 (skanda.5.232.3)

तस्य जन्मार्जितं पापं तत्क्षणादेव नश्यति। सप्तजन्मार्जितं पापं गायत्र्या नश्यते ध्रुवम्

tasya janmārjitaṁ pāpaṁ tatkṣaṇādeva naśyati| saptajanmārjitaṁ pāpaṁ gāyatryā naśyate dhruvam

whatever sin he has accumulated in this life is destroyed that very instant; the sin accumulated over seven births is surely destroyed by the Gayatri.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.232.4)

दशभिर्जन्मभिर्जातं शतेन तु पुरा कृतम्। सहस्रेण त्रिजन्मोत्थं गायत्री हन्ति किल्बिषम्

daśabhirjanmabhirjātaṁ śatena tu purā kṛtam| sahasreṇa trijanmotthaṁ gāyatrī hanti kilbiṣam

Sin accumulated over ten births — and, with a hundred repetitions, sin done in the past — with a thousand repetitions the Gayatri destroys sin arising from three births.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.232.5)

वैदिकं लौकिकं वापि जाप्यं जप्तं नरेश्वर। तत्क्षणाद्दहते सर्वं तृणं तु ज्वलनो यथा

vaidikaṁ laukikaṁ vāpi jāpyaṁ japtaṁ nareśvara| tatkṣaṇāddahate sarvaṁ tṛṇaṁ tu jvalano yathā

O lord of men, whatever muttered prayer is recited, whether Vedic or worldly, it burns away everything that instant, just as fire consumes straw.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.232.6)

न देवबलमाश्रित्य कदाचित्पापमाचरेत्। अज्ञानान्नश्यते क्षिप्रं नोत्तरं तु कदाचन

na devabalamāśritya kadācitpāpamācaret| ajñānānnaśyate kṣipraṁ nottaraṁ tu kadācana

One should never, relying on divine power, commit sin deliberately; sin done out of ignorance is quickly destroyed, but never one done knowingly thereafter.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.232.7)

तत्र तीर्थे तु यो दानं शक्तिमाश्रित्य चाचरेत्। तदक्षय्यफलं सर्वं जायते पाण्डुनन्दन

tatra tīrthe tu yo dānaṁ śaktimāśritya cācaret| tadakṣayyaphalaṁ sarvaṁ jāyate pāṇḍunandana

There at that tirtha, whoever, relying on his own means, performs a gift — O son of Pandu, all of it becomes a gift of imperishable fruit.
