The Greatness of Koteshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.5.251.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच - ततो गच्छेत्तु राजेन्द्र तीर्थं कोटीश्वरं परम्। ऋषिकोटिः समायाता यत्र वै कुरुनन्दन

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - tato gacchettu rājendra tīrthaṁ koṭīśvaraṁ param| ṛṣikoṭiḥ samāyātā yatra vai kurunandana

Shri Markandeya said: "Then, O Rajendra, one should go to the supreme ford Koteshvara, where indeed, O joy of the Kurus, a koti — ten million — of sages assembled."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.251.2)

कृष्णद्वैपायनस्यैव क्षेमार्थं मुनिपुंगवाः। मन्त्रयित्वा द्विजैः सर्वैर्वेदमङ्गलपाठकैः

kṛṣṇadvaipāyanasyaiva kṣemārthaṁ munipuṁgavāḥ| mantrayitvā dvijaiḥ sarvairvedamaṅgalapāṭhakaiḥ

For the welfare of Krishna Dvaipayana himself, the foremost of sages, having taken counsel together with all the twice-born who recited the auspicious Vedic hymns,

Verse 3 (skanda.5.251.3)

स्थापितः शङ्करस्तत्र कारणं बन्धनाशनम्। संसारच्छेदकरणं प्राणिनामार्तिनाशनम्

sthāpitaḥ śaṅkarastatra kāraṇaṁ bandhanāśanam| saṁsāracchedakaraṇaṁ prāṇināmārtināśanam

established Shankara there — the cause that destroys bondage, that severs the chain of worldly existence, that removes the affliction of living beings.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.251.4)

कोटीश्वरमिति प्रोक्तं पृथिव्यां नृपनन्दन। स्नापयेत्तं तु यो भक्त्या पूर्णिमायां नृपोत्तम

koṭīśvaramiti proktaṁ pṛthivyāṁ nṛpanandana| snāpayettaṁ tu yo bhaktyā pūrṇimāyāṁ nṛpottama

He is proclaimed on earth as Koteshvara, O joy of kings; whoever, O best of kings, bathes him with devotion on the full moon,

Verse 5 (skanda.5.251.5)

पितॄणां तर्पणं कृत्वा पिण्डदानं यथाविधि। श्रावणस्य विशेषेण पूर्णिमायां युधिष्ठिर

pitṝṇāṁ tarpaṇaṁ kṛtvā piṇḍadānaṁ yathāvidhi| śrāvaṇasya viśeṣeṇa pūrṇimāyāṁ yudhiṣṭhira

having performed the tarpana of the ancestors, and the offering of pindas according to rule — especially on the full moon of Shravana, O Yudhishthira —

Verse 6 (skanda.5.251.6)

पितॄणामक्षया तृप्तिर्यावदाभूतसम्प्लवम्। पितॄणां परमं गुह्यं रेवातटसमाश्रितम्। मोक्षदं सर्वजन्तूनां निर्मितं मुनिसत्तमैः

pitṝṇāmakṣayā tṛptiryāvadābhūtasamplavam| pitṝṇāṁ paramaṁ guhyaṁ revātaṭasamāśritam| mokṣadaṁ sarvajantūnāṁ nirmitaṁ munisattamaiḥ

grants the ancestors imperishable satisfaction, until the dissolution of all created beings. It is the supreme secret of the ancestors, situated on the bank of the Reva, granting liberation to all creatures, made by the best of sages.
