The Greatness of Erandi-sangama Tirtha

Chapter 257All chaptersChapter 259

Verse 1 (skanda.5.258.1)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchenmahīpāla eraṇḍīsaṅgamaṁ param| yacchrutaṁ vai mayā rājañchivasya vadataḥ purā||

Shri Markandeya said: Thereafter, O lord of the earth, one should go to the supreme confluence of Erandi, which I once heard, O king, being spoken of by Shiva.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.258.2)

etadeva purā praśnaṁ gauryā pṛṣṭastu śaṅkaraḥ| provāca nṛpaśārdūla guhyādguhyataraṁ śubham||

This very question was once asked by Gauri, and Shankara, O tiger among kings, declared this auspicious secret, more secret than the secret.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.258.3)

īśvara uvāca| śṛṇu devi paraṁ guhyaṁ nākhyātaṁ kasyacinmayā| revāyāścottare kūle tīrthaṁ paramaśobhanam| bhrūṇahatyāharaṁ devi kāmadaṁ putravardhanam||

Ishvara said: Hear, O Devi, this supreme secret that I have told to no one - on the northern bank of the Reva there is a most beautiful tirtha, O Devi, which removes the sin of feticide, grants desires, and increases sons.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.258.4)

pārvatyuvāca| kathayasva mahādeva tīrthaṁ paramaśobhanam| bhrūṇahatyāharaṁ kasmātkāmadaṁ svargadarśanam||

Parvati said: Tell me, O Mahadeva, of this most beautiful tirtha - why does it remove the sin of feticide, grant desires, and show the vision of heaven?

Verse 5 (skanda.5.258.5)

īśvara uvāca| atrirnāma mahādevi mānaso brahmaṇaḥ sutaḥ| agnihotrarato nityaṁ devatātithipūjakaḥ||

Ishvara said: O great Devi, there was a mind-born son of Brahma named Atri, ever devoted to the fire-sacrifice, a worshipper of gods and guests.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.258.6)

somasaṁsthāśca saptaiva kṛtā vipreṇa pārvati| anasūyeti vikhyātā bhāryā tasya guṇānvitā||

That brahmin had performed the seven Soma-sacrifices, O Parvati. His wife, endowed with virtues, was renowned by the name Anasuya.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.258.7)

pativratā patiprāṇā patyuḥ kāryahite ratā| evaṁ yāti tataḥ kāle na putrā na ca putrikā||

She was devoted to her husband, her very life was her husband, and she was intent on his welfare and his tasks. Thus time passed, but there was neither son nor daughter.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.258.8)

aparāhṇe mahādevi sukhāsīnau tu sundari| vadantau sukhaduḥkhāni pūrvavṛttāni yāni ca||

O great Devi, O beautiful one, in the afternoon the two sat comfortably together, speaking of their joys and sorrows and of past happenings.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.258.9)

atriruvāca| saumye śubhe priye kānte cārusarvāṅgasundari| vidyāvinayasampanne padmapatranibhekṣaṇe||

Atri said: O gentle, auspicious, beloved, lovely one, beautiful in every limb, endowed with learning and humility, whose eyes are like lotus petals -

Verse 10 (skanda.5.258.10)

pūrṇacandranibhākāre pṛthuśroṇibharālase| na tvayā sadṛśī nārī trailokye sacarācare||

- whose form is like the full moon, graceful with ample hips: there is no woman like you in the three worlds, with all that moves and moves not.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.258.11)

ratiputraphalā nārī paṭhyate vedavādibhiḥ| putrahīnasya yatsaukhyaṁ tatsaukhyaṁ mama sundari||

The Veda-knowers declare that the fruit of a wife's union is a son. O beautiful one, whatever joy belongs to a sonless man, that same joy is mine.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.258.12)

yathāhaṁ na tathā putraḥ samarthaḥ sarvakarmasu| punnāmanarakādbhadre jātamātreṇa sundari||

As I am capable, so is a son even more capable in all rites; O auspicious, beautiful one, merely by being born a son saves his father from the hell called Put.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.258.13)

patantaṁ rakṣayeddevi mahāpātakinaṁ yadi| mahāghore gatā vāpi duṣṭakarmapitāmahāḥ||

O Devi, a son protects even a father who is a great sinner and falling into hell; and even forefathers gone to the most terrible hell on account of evil deeds -

Verse 14 (skanda.5.258.14)

taddharanti suputrāśca vaitaraṇyāṁ gatānapi| putreṇa lokāñjayati pautreṇa paramā gatiḥ||

- good sons rescue them, even from the Vaitarani river; through a son one conquers the worlds, through a grandson the supreme goal is attained.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.258.15)

atha putrasya pautreṇa pragacchedbrahma śāśvatam| nāsti putrasamo bandhuriha loke paratra ca||

And through the grandson of a son one attains the eternal Brahman; there is no kinsman equal to a son, in this world or the next.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.258.16)

ahaśca madhyarātre ca cintayānasya sarvadā| śuṣyanti mama gātrāṇi grīṣme nadyudakaṁ yathā||

Day and midnight, ever thinking of this, my limbs waste away, like a river's water in summer.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.258.17)

anasūyovāca| yattvayā śocitaṁ vipra tatsarvaṁ śocayāmyaham| tavodvegakaraṁ yacca tanme dahati cetasi||

Anasuya said: O brahmin, whatever grieves you, that same grief is mine. Whatever causes you distress burns in my heart too.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.258.18)

yena putrā bhaviṣyanti āyuṣmanto guṇānvitāḥ| tatkāryaṁ ca samīkṣasva yena tuṣyetprajāpatiḥ||

Consider what action would bring long-lived, virtuous sons, by which Prajapati would be pleased.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.258.19)

atriruvāca| tapastaptaṁ mayā bhadre jātamātreṇa duṣkaram| vratopavāsaniyamaiḥ śākāhāreṇa sundari||

Atri said: O auspicious, beautiful one, from the very time of my birth I have performed difficult austerity, through vows, fasts, restraints, and a diet of vegetables alone.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.258.20)

kṣīṇadehastu tiṣṭhāmi hyaśakto'haṁ mahāvrate| tena śocāmi cātmānaṁ rahasyaṁ kathitaṁ mayā||

My body is now wasted, and I am unable for further great vows. Therefore I grieve for myself - this secret I have told you.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.258.21)

anasūyovāca| bhartuḥ pativratā nārī ratiputravivardhinī| trivargasādhanā sā ca ślāghyā ca viduṣāṁ jane||

Anasuya said: A wife devoted to her husband increases both his union and his sons; she accomplishes the threefold aim of life, and is praised among the wise.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.258.22)

japastapastīrthayātrā mṛḍejyāmantrasādhanam| devatārādhanaṁ caiva strīśūdrapatanāni ṣaṭ||

Japa, tapas, pilgrimage, worship of Shiva, mantra-practice, and worship of deities - these six, if undertaken without permission, are causes of downfall for women and shudras.

Verse 23 (skanda.5.258.23)

īdṛśaṁ tu mahādoṣaṁ strīṇāṁ tu vratasādhane| vadanti munayaḥ sarve yathoktaṁ vedabhāṣitam||

All the sages declare this to be a great fault in women undertaking vows, as stated according to the word of the Veda.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.258.24)

anujñātā tvayā brahmaṁstapastapsyāmi duṣkaram| putrārthitvaṁ samuddiśya toṣayāmi surottamān||

With your permission, O brahmin, I shall perform difficult austerity; desiring a son, I shall please the best of the gods.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.258.25)

atriruvāca| sādhu sādhu mahāprājñe mama saṁtoṣakāriṇi| ājñātā tvaṁ mayā bhadre putrārthaṁ tapa āśraya||

Atri said: Well done, well done, O most wise one who gives me contentment! You are permitted by me, O auspicious one - undertake austerity for the sake of a son.

Verse 26 (skanda.5.258.26)

devatānāṁ manuṣyāṇāṁ pitḥṇāmanṛṇo bhave| na bhāryāsadṛśo bandhustriṣu lokeṣu vidyate||

O Devi, may our son free us from debt to gods, men, and ancestors; there is no kinsman equal to a wife in the three worlds.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.258.27)

tena devāḥ praśaṁsanti na bhāryāsadṛśaṁ sukham| sanmukhe manmukhāḥ putrāḥ vilome tu parāṅmukhāḥ||

Therefore the gods praise the wife - there is no happiness equal to a wife. When she faces her husband kindly, sons too are favorable; when she turns away, they too turn away.

Verse 28 (skanda.5.258.28)

tena bhāryāṁ praśaṁsanti sadevāsuramānuṣāḥ| mahāvrate mahāprājñe sattvavati śubhekṣaṇe||

Therefore gods, demons and men alike praise the wife. O great in vows, most wise, full of goodness, of auspicious glance -

Verse 29 (skanda.5.258.29)

tapastapasva śīghraṁ tvaṁ putrārthaṁ tu mamājñayā| etadvākyāvasāne tu sāṣṭāṅgaṁ praṇatābravīt||

- quickly perform austerity for a son, by my command. At the end of these words, Anasuya bowed with eight limbs to the ground and spoke.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.258.30)

tvatprasādena viprendra sarvānkāmānavāpnuyām| haṁsalīlāgatiḥ sā ca mṛgākṣī varavarṇinī||

'By your grace, O best of brahmins, may I obtain all desires.' She, of swan-like graceful gait, doe-eyed, of excellent complexion -

Verse 31 (skanda.5.258.31)

niyamasthā tato bhūtvā samprāptā narmadāṁ nadīm| śivasvedodbhavāṁ devīṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanīm||

- then, established in vows, reached the river Narmada, the goddess born from Shiva's sweat, destroyer of all sins.

Verse 32 (skanda.5.258.32)

yasyā darśanamātreṇa naśyate pāpasañcayaḥ| snānamātreṇa vai yasyā aśvamedhaphalaṁ labhet||

By the mere sight of whom accumulated sin is destroyed, by whose mere bathing one obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.258.33)

ye pibanti mahādevi śraddadhānāḥ payaḥ śubham| somapānena tattulyaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā||

O great Devi, those who drink her auspicious water with faith - that is equal to drinking Soma; there is no doubt in this.

Verse 34 (skanda.5.258.34)

ye smaranti divā rātrau yojanānāṁ śatairapi| mucyante sarvapāpebhyo rudralokaṁ prayānti te||

Those who remember her, day or night, even from hundreds of yojanas away, are freed from all sins and go to the world of Rudra.

Verse 35 (skanda.5.258.35)

narmadāyāḥ samīpe tu tāvubhau yojanadvaye| na paśyanti yamaṁ tatra ye mṛtā varavarṇini||

O fair one, near the Narmada, within two yojanas on either side, those who die there do not see Yama.

Verse 36 (skanda.5.258.36)

tatastaduttare kūle eraṇḍyāḥ saṅgame śubhe| niyamasthā viśālākṣī śākāhāreṇa sundari||

Then on its northern bank, at the auspicious confluence of the Eranda, the wide-eyed, beautiful one remained fixed in vows, living on vegetables alone.

Verse 37 (skanda.5.258.37)

toṣayantī trīṁśca devāñchubhaiḥ stotrairvrataistathā| grīṣmeṣu ca mahādevi pañcāgniṁ sādhayettataḥ||

Pleasing the three gods with auspicious hymns and vows; and in summer, O great Devi, she practiced the austerity of five fires.

Verse 38 (skanda.5.258.38)

varṣākāle cārdravāsāścareccāndrāyaṇāni ca| hemante tu tataḥ prāpte toyamadhye vasetsadā||

In the rainy season she wore wet garments and observed the Chandrayana penance; and when winter came, she always stayed immersed in water.

Verse 39 (skanda.5.258.39)

prātaḥsnānaṁ tataḥ sandhyāṁ kuryāddevarṣitarpaṇam| devānāmarcanaṁ kṛtvā homaṁ kuryādyathāvidhi||

After the morning bath she performed the twilight rites and offerings to gods and sages; having worshipped the gods, she performed the fire-oblation according to rule.

Verse 40 (skanda.5.258.40)

yajate vaiṣṇavāṁllokān snānajāpyahutena ca| evaṁ varṣaśate prāpte rudraviṣṇupitāmahāḥ||

Through bathing, japa, and oblation she worshipped toward the Vaishnava worlds. Thus, when a hundred years had passed, Rudra, Vishnu, and the Grandsire -

Verse 41 (skanda.5.258.41)

samprāptā dvijarūpaistu eraṇḍyāḥ saṅgame priye| purataḥ saṁsthitāstasyā vedamabhyuddharanti ca||

- arrived in the form of brahmins at the beloved confluence of the Eranda. Standing before her, they were reciting the Vedas.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.258.42)

anasūyā japaṁ tyaktvā nirīkṣya tānmuhurmuhuḥ| utthitā sā viśālākṣī arghaṁ dattvā yathāvidhi||

Anasuya, leaving her japa, gazed at them again and again. The wide-eyed one rose and offered them water according to rule.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.258.43)

adya me saphalaṁ janma adya me saphalaṁ tapaḥ| darśanena tu viprāṇāṁ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate||

'Today my birth is fruitful, today my austerity is fruitful - by the sight of brahmins one is freed from all sins.'

Verse 44 (skanda.5.258.44)

pradakṣiṇaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā sāṣṭāṅgaṁ praṇatābravīt| kandamūlaphalaṁ śākaṁ nīvārānapi pāvanān| prayacchāmyahamadyaiva munīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām||

Then, having circumambulated them and bowed with eight limbs, she said: 'I now offer roots, fruits, vegetables, and pure wild rice, to you sages of purified spirit.'

Verse 45 (skanda.5.258.45)

viprā ūcuḥ| tapasā tu vicitreṇa tapaḥsatyena suvrate| tṛptāḥ sma sarvakāmaistu suvrate tava darśanāt||

The brahmins said: By your wondrous austerity and truthful penance, O virtuous one, we are satisfied in all desires by merely seeing you.

Verse 46 (skanda.5.258.46)

asmākaṁ kautukaṁ jātaṁ tāpasena vratena yat| svargamokṣasutasyārthe tapastapasi duṣkaram||

We are curious about this: for what purpose - heaven, liberation, or a son - do you perform such difficult austerity by this ascetic vow?

Verse 47 (skanda.5.258.47)

anasūyovāca| tapasā sidhyate svargastapasā paramā gatiḥ| tapasā cārthakāmau ca tapasā guṇavānsutaḥ| tapa eva ca me viprāḥ sarvakāmaphalapradam||

Anasuya said: By austerity heaven is attained, by austerity the supreme goal; by austerity come wealth and desire, by austerity a virtuous son. O brahmins, austerity alone grants me the fruit of all desires.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.258.48)

viprā ūcuḥ| tanvī śyāmā viśālākṣī snigdhāṅgī rūpasaṁyutā| haṁsalīlāgatigamā tvaṁ ca sarvāṅgasundarī||

The brahmins said: You are slender, dark-young, wide-eyed, of glossy limbs, endowed with beauty, walking with the swan's graceful gait, lovely in every limb.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.258.49)

kiṁ ca te tapasā kāryamātmānaṁ śocyase katham||

What need have you of austerity? Why do you grieve for yourself?

Verse 50 (skanda.5.258.50)

anasūyovāca| yadi rudraśca viṣṇuśca svayaṁ sākṣātpitāmahaḥ| gūḍharūpadharāḥ sarve taccihnamupalakṣaye||

Anasuya said: If Rudra, Vishnu, and the Grandsire himself, in person, are all here in disguised form - I recognize the signs of this.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.258.51)

tasyā vākyāvasāne tu svarūpaṁ darśayanti te| svasvarūpaiḥ sthitā devāḥ sūryakoṭisamaprabhāḥ||

At the end of her words, they showed their true forms. The gods stood in their own forms, radiant as a crore of suns.

Verse 52 (skanda.5.258.52)

caturbhujo mahādevi śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ| atasīpuṣpavarṇastu pītavāsā janārdanaḥ||

O great Devi, four-armed, bearing conch, discus and mace, of the colour of the atasi flower, clad in yellow - Janardana [Vishnu].

Verse 53 (skanda.5.258.53)

garutmānvāhanaṁ yasya śriyā ca sahito hariḥ| prasannavadanaḥ śrīmānsvayaṁrūpo vyavasthitaḥ||

Whose vehicle is Garuda, Hari accompanied by Shri, of serene countenance, glorious, standing in his own true form.

Verse 54 (skanda.5.258.54)

pītavāsā mahādevi caturvadanapaṅkajaḥ| haṁsopari samārūḍho hyakṣamālākarodyataḥ||

O great Devi, Brahma clad in yellow, with four lotus faces, mounted on a swan, holding a rosary raised in his hand.

Verse 55 (skanda.5.258.55)

āgato narmadātīre brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ| yo'sau sarvajagadvyāpī svayaṁ sākṣānmaheśvaraḥ||

Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, came to the bank of the Narmada. And he who pervades the whole universe, Maheshvara himself in person -

Verse 56 (skanda.5.258.56)

vṛṣabhaṁ tu samārūḍho daśabāhusamanvitaḥ| bhasmāṅgarāgaśobhāḍhyaḥ pañcavaktrastrilocanaḥ||

- mounted on the bull, endowed with ten arms, adorned with the beauty of ash smeared on his limbs, five-faced, three-eyed.

Verse 57 (skanda.5.258.57)

Overcome by sleep, wearied by grief and exertion, he lay asleep. Again then, at midnight, O Yudhishthira, his wife -

Verse 156 (skanda.5.258.156)

By proclaiming it, merit is diminished, and it grows by concealment - in this world and the next, the same law holds also for sin.

Verse 162 (skanda.5.258.162)

evaṁ saṁcityamānāhaṁ sthitā rātrau bhayāturā| kṛmirāśigataṁ tvāṁ hi kasyāhaṁ kathayāmi kim||

Thus reflecting, I have remained through the nights afflicted with fear; to whom, and what, should I tell of you being covered with worms?

Verse 163 (skanda.5.258.163)

Verse 165 (skanda.5.258.165)

taḍāgaṁ vā saridvāpi tīrthaṁ vā devatārcanam| yaṁ gato'si prabhāvo'yaṁ tasya nānyasya me sthitam||

Verse 168 (skanda.5.258.168)

nānyattīrthaṁ vijānāmi saritaṁ sara eva vā| satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ kathitaṁ tava bhāmini||
