The Greatness of Chakra Tirtha at Senapura

Verse 1 (skanda.5.264.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महीपाल चक्रतीर्थमनुत्तमम्। सेनापुरमितिख्यातं सर्वपापक्षयंकरम्।

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchenmahīpāla cakratīrthamanuttamam| senāpuramitikhyātaṁ sarvapāpakṣayaṁkaram||

Shri Markandeya said: Thereafter, O king, one should go to the unsurpassed Chakra tirtha, known as being at Senapura, destroyer of all sins.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.264.2)

सैनापत्याभिषेकाय देवदेवेन चक्रिणा। आनीतश्च महासेनो देवैः सेन्द्रपुरोगमैः।

saināpatyābhiṣekāya devadevena cakriṇā| ānītaśca mahāseno devaiḥ sendrapurogamaiḥ||

For the consecration as commander-in-chief, Mahasena was brought by the gods, led by Indra, together with the God of gods bearing the discus.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.264.3)

दानवानां वधार्थाय जयाय च दिवौकसाम्। भूमिदानेन विप्रेन्द्रांस्तर्पयित्वा यथाविधि।

dānavānāṁ vadhārthāya jayāya ca divaukasām| bhūmidānena viprendrāṁstarpayitvā yathāvidhi||

For the destruction of the demons and for the victory of the celestials, having satisfied the foremost brahmins duly with the gift of land -

Verse 4 (skanda.5.264.4)

शङ्खभेरीनिनादैश्च पटहानां च निस्वनैः। वीणावेणुमृदङ्गैश्च झल्लरीस्वरमङ्गलैः।

śaṅkhabherīninādaiśca paṭahānāṁ ca nisvanaiḥ| vīṇāveṇumṛdaṅgaiśca jhallarīsvaramaṅgalaiḥ||

- with the sounds of conches and kettledrums, and the reverberations of war-drums, with vinas, flutes and mridangas, and the auspicious tones of cymbals -

Verse 5 (skanda.5.264.5)

ततः कृत्वा स्वनं घोरं दानवो बलदर्पितः। रुरुर्नाम विघातार्थमभिषेकस्य चागतः।

tataḥ kṛtvā svanaṁ ghoraṁ dānavo baladarpitaḥ| rururnāma vighātārthamabhiṣekasya cāgataḥ||

- then, having made a terrible roar, the demon, arrogant with strength, named Ruru, came to obstruct the consecration.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.264.6)

हस्त्यश्वरथपत्त्योघैः पूरयन्वै दिशो दश। तत्र तेन महद्युद्धं प्रवृत्तं किल भारत।

hastyaśvarathapattyoghaiḥ pūrayanvai diśo daśa| tatra tena mahadyuddhaṁ pravṛttaṁ kila bhārata||

Filling the ten directions with hordes of elephants, horses, chariots, and foot-soldiers - there, O Bharata, a great battle indeed took place.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.264.7)

शक्त्यृष्टिपाशमुशलैः खड्गैस्तोमरटङ्कनैः। भल्लैः कर्णिकनाराचैः कबन्धपटसंकुलैः।

śaktyṛṣṭipāśamuśalaiḥ khaḍgaistomaraṭaṅkanaiḥ| bhallaiḥ karṇikanārācaiḥ kabandhapaṭasaṁkulaiḥ||

With spears, lances, nooses, clubs, swords, javelins and battle-axes, with barbed arrows and crescent-headed shafts, filled with headless trunks and banners -

Verse 8 (skanda.5.264.8)

ततस्तु तां शत्रुबलस्य सेनां क्षणेन चापन्च्युतबाणघातैः। विध्वस्तहस्त्यश्वरथान्महात्मा जग्राह चक्रं रिपुसङ्घनाशनः।

tatastu tāṁ śatrubalasya senāṁ kṣaṇena cāpancyutabāṇaghātaiḥ| vidhvastahastyaśvarathānmahātmā jagrāha cakraṁ ripusaṅghanāśanaḥ||

Then, in an instant, that army of the enemy's force, its elephants, horses, and chariots shattered by arrows loosed from the bow, the great-souled one seized the discus, the destroyer of the host of foes.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.264.9)

ज्वलच्च चक्रं निशितं भयंकरं सुरासुराणां च सुदर्शनं रणे। चकर्त दैत्यस्य शिरस्तदानीं करात्प्रमुक्तं मधुघातिनश्च तत्।

jvalacca cakraṁ niśitaṁ bhayaṁkaraṁ surāsurāṇāṁ ca sudarśanaṁ raṇe| cakarta daityasya śirastadānīṁ karātpramuktaṁ madhughātinaśca tat||

That blazing, sharp Sudarshana discus, terrifying to gods and demons alike, released from the hand of the slayer of Madhu in battle, then severed the demon's head.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.264.10)

तं दृष्ट्वा सहसा विघ्नमभिषेके षडाननः। त्यक्त्वा तु तत्र संस्थानं चचार विपुलं तपः।

taṁ dṛṣṭvā sahasā vighnamabhiṣeke ṣaḍānanaḥ| tyaktvā tu tatra saṁsthānaṁ cacāra vipulaṁ tapaḥ||

Seeing that sudden obstacle at the consecration, the six-faced one, abandoning that place, went to perform extensive austerity.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.264.11)

मुक्तं चक्रं विनाशाय हरिणा लोकधारिणा। द्विदलं दानवं कृत्वा पपात विमले जले।

muktaṁ cakraṁ vināśāya hariṇā lokadhāriṇā| dvidalaṁ dānavaṁ kṛtvā papāta vimale jale||

The discus, released by Hari, sustainer of the worlds, for destruction, having cleft the demon in two, fell into the pure water.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.264.12)

तदा प्रभृति तत्तीर्थं चक्रतीर्थमिति श्रुतम्। सर्वपापविनाशाय निर्मितं विश्वमूर्तिना।

tadā prabhṛti tattīrthaṁ cakratīrthamiti śrutam| sarvapāpavināśāya nirmitaṁ viśvamūrtinā||

From that time onward, that tirtha became known as Chakra-tirtha, made by the universal-formed one for the destruction of all sin.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.264.13)

चक्रतीर्थे तु यः स्नात्वा पूजयेद्देवमच्युतम्। पुण्डरीकस्य यज्ञस्य फलमाप्नोति मानवः।

cakratīrthe tu yaḥ snātvā pūjayeddevamacyutam| puṇḍarīkasya yajñasya phalamāpnoti mānavaḥ||

Whoever bathes at the Chakra tirtha and worships the god Achyuta, that person obtains the fruit of the Pundarika sacrifice.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.264.14)

तत्र तीर्थे तु यः स्नात्वा पूजयेद्ब्राह्मणाञ्छुभान्। शान्तदान्तजितक्रोधान्स लभेत्कोटिजं फलम्।

tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ snātvā pūjayedbrāhmaṇāñchubhān| śāntadāntajitakrodhānsa labhetkoṭijaṁ phalam||

Whoever bathes at that tirtha and worships the auspicious brahmins, calm, self-controlled, who have conquered anger, obtains a fruit multiplied a crore-fold.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.264.15)

तत्र तीर्थे तु यो भक्त्या त्यजते देहमात्मनः। विष्णुलोकं मृतो याति जयशब्दादिमङ्गलैः।

tatra tīrthe tu yo bhaktyā tyajate dehamātmanaḥ| viṣṇulokaṁ mṛto yāti jayaśabdādimaṅgalaiḥ||

Whoever with devotion gives up his own body at that tirtha, dying, goes to the world of Vishnu amid the sounds of victory and other auspicious cries.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.264.16)

क्रीडयित्वा यथाकामं देवगन्धर्वपूजितः। इहागत्य च भूयोऽपि जायते विपुले कुले।

krīḍayitvā yathākāmaṁ devagandharvapūjitaḥ| ihāgatya ca bhūyo'pi jāyate vipule kule||

Having sported there as he wished, honoured by gods and gandharvas, coming again to this world, he is born once more in a great family.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.264.17)

एतत्पुण्यं पापहरं धन्यं दुःखप्रणाशनम्। कथितं ते महाभाग भूयश्चान्यच्छृणुष्व मे।

etatpuṇyaṁ pāpaharaṁ dhanyaṁ duḥkhapraṇāśanam| kathitaṁ te mahābhāga bhūyaścānyacchṛṇuṣva me||

This meritorious, sin-removing, blessed, sorrow-destroying account has been told to you, O greatly fortunate one; hear further from me another.
