The Glory of the Lamp-Offering at Anarakeshvara

Chapter 29All chaptersChapter 31

Verse 1 (skanda.5.30.1)

vyāsa uvāca dīpe'sminyatphalaṁ cāsti vidhinā yena dīyate tatsarvaṁ brūhi me tāta dīpotpattiṁ ca śobhanām

Vyāsa said: "Tell me, O father, all the fruit that exists in this rite of the lamp, and by what procedure it is offered, and the auspicious origin of the lamp-offering."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.30.2)

sanatkumāra uvāca purā kṛtayuge vyāsa pārvatīṁ śaṁkaro'grataḥ abhiprayācituṁ yātastayāpi so'bhiyācitaḥ

Sanatkumāra said: "Formerly, in the Kṛta age, O Vyāsa, Śaṅkara went before Pārvatī to entreat her playfully, and she too entreated him in turn."

Verse 3 (skanda.5.30.3)

pārvatyuvāca śarīre kṛṣṇatā śaṁbho mamāsti rūpahāriṇī tasmādyāce bhṛśaṁ śaṁbho prasīda divya locana

Pārvatī said: "O Śambhu, there is a darkness in my body that steals away my beauty; therefore I earnestly beg you, O Śambhu of divine eyes, be gracious."

Verse 4 (skanda.5.30.4)

bhavena varṇitā sā vai atīva śobhanā mama locane pakṣmamālāyāḥ śobhase'titarāṁ sadā

"You have been described by me as exceedingly lovely; your eyes, with their row of lashes, ever shine forth all the more."

Verse 5 (skanda.5.30.5)

sitābjasaṁsthito bhṛṁgo yathā śobhayate ca tam tayā tathā yācitosau dhūrjaṭirvṛṣabhāsanaḥ

"As a black bee resting upon a white lotus adorns it, so does your darkness adorn you." Thus entreated by her, Dhūrjaṭi, whose seat is the bull, replied --

Verse 6 (skanda.5.30.6)

virūparūpakartāsi na śṛṇoṣi vaco yadā tadā tvahaṁ savai rāgyā careyaṁ duṣkaraṁ tapaḥ

"You make light of my plea and deform my appearance with words; if you will not heed my word, then, filled with dispassion, I shall undertake severe austerity."

Verse 7 (skanda.5.30.7)

bhavastayeti coktastu tasyā vai pāṇimagrahīt kadācicchaṁkaro devo ratiṁ yācitavānpriyām

Bhava, saying "So be it" to her, took her hand. Once, the god Śaṅkara entreated his beloved for amorous pleasure.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.30.8)

ratiṁ dattavatī sā tu jahāsa nāma kīrtayan suduḥkhitā'bhavatsā tu parāṅmukhī vihāya tam

She granted him his pleasure, but he laughed, uttering some teasing name. She became deeply distressed, and, turning away, left him.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.30.9)

uvāca roṣasaṁyuktā saṁsmṛtya devabhāṣitam tapovanaṁ vrajāmyadya sugauratvopalabdhaye

Filled with anger, recalling the god's words, she said: "I shall go this very day to a forest of austerity, to obtain a fair complexion."

Verse 10 (skanda.5.30.10)

suvarṇarūparūpā ca yadā punarbhavāmi ca tadā tava sānurāgā bhavāmi caiva nānyathā

"When I become again golden-hued in form, then I shall be devoted to you in love — and not otherwise."

Verse 11 (skanda.5.30.11)

itīdameva jalpaṁtī jagāma viṁdhyaparvatam haraḥ śuśoca tatastāṁ kva gatā sā vihāya mām

Speaking just this, she went to the Vindhya mountain. Then Hara grieved: "Where has she gone, abandoning me?"

Verse 12 (skanda.5.30.12)

smaraṁstadeva ceṣṭitaṁ tadeva pūrvabhāṣitam tadaiva me vṛthā matirmudā yadā na mānitā

Remembering that very act, and those very earlier words of his own: "My wits were vain indeed, when in my mirth I did not honour her."

Verse 13 (skanda.5.30.13)

yato mayā himādrijā samastalokasundarī puraiva nābhinaṁditā gatā vihāya māmiti

"Because I, before, did not properly cherish the daughter of the Himālaya, most beautiful in all the worlds, she has gone, abandoning me" — thus he lamented.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.30.14)

itīdameva so'vadadgatastvaddarśanaṁ tataḥ priyāviyogamīdṛśaṁ guruṁ na soḍhumutsahe

Saying just this, he then went out of your sight: "I cannot bear such a heavy separation from my beloved."

Verse 15 (skanda.5.30.15)

tato jagaddhi saṁkulaṁ mahābhayena saṁyutam surāsurā maharṣayaḥ paraṁ viṣādamabhyaguḥ

Then the whole world became thrown into confusion, filled with great fear; the gods, asuras, and great sages fell into the deepest despair.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.30.16)

vihāya maṁdirāṇi te paraṁ viṣādamāgatāḥ harastutiṁ parāṁ ca te pracakruradbhutopamāḥ

Abandoning their abodes, plunged in the deepest despair, they, wondrous in their distress, began the supreme praise of Hara.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.30.17)

sanatkumāra uvāca na dṛśyate yadā devo rudro bāleṁduśekharaḥ naṣṭālokaṁ jagatsarvaṁ kāṁtāramabhavattadā

Sanatkumāra said: When the god Rudra, crested with the young moon, was no longer seen, the whole world, its light lost, became a wilderness.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.30.18)

For Rudra's three eyes are the sun, the moon, and fire; when Rudra had gone, they no longer shone in this world of moving and unmoving things.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.30.19)

tatastamasi dustāre saṁbhūte lomaharṣaṇe anyonyaṁ hi na paśyaṁti surāsurāstamovṛtāḥ

Then, when an impassable, hair-raising darkness had come to be, the gods and asuras, enveloped in darkness, could not see one another.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.30.20)

eṣā buddhistatasteṣāmutpannā kāryasiddhaye yayā buddhyā jagannātho jñāyate pārvatīpatiḥ

Then this thought arose in them, for the accomplishment of their purpose, by which thought the Lord of the world, the husband of Pārvatī, might be known.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.30.21)

na hyāloko vinā tena śaśisūryāgnica kṣuṣā parasparaṁ bruvaṁti sma duḥkhitāste visaṁjñayā

For there is no light without him, who has the moon, sun, and fire as his eyes. Distressed, bereft of their senses, they spoke to one another --

Verse 22 (skanda.5.30.22)

he deva he mune siddhe he ṛṣe he niśācara he daitya he danuśreṣṭha he manuṣyanideśaka

"'O god! O sage! O siddha! O ṛṣi! O night-walker! O daitya! O best of the Danus! O guide of men!'"

Verse 23 (skanda.5.30.23)

"'To what direction have you gone, father? Or what have you found, O mighty one? Is there anywhere a resting-place for you, or anywhere a support?'"

Verse 24 (skanda.5.30.24)

pātheyamasti kiṁcitte diśi kiṁ vātha kutracit prakāśaṁ vāhanaṁ chatramaśanaṁ śayanaṁ gṛham

"'Do you have any provisions for the way? Is there anywhere in any direction a light, a mount, a canopy, food, a bed, a house?'"

Verse 25 (skanda.5.30.25)

kvacidvāsi kathaṁ toyamathavā cittanirvṛtiḥ bandhuḥ putro'si vā tāta vṛkṣa cchāyā suśītalā

"'Are you dwelling somewhere? How is there water, or peace of mind? Do you have a kinsman, a son, O father, or the cool shade of a tree?'"

Verse 26 (skanda.5.30.26)

evaṁ prakāraṁ karuṇaṁ samābhāṣya parasparam bhūyaścintāparāḥ sarve devāśceṁdrapurogamāḥ

Speaking thus, pitifully, to one another, all the gods, headed by Indra, became once more overcome with anxiety.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.30.27)

bhūmervivaramāśritya prāṇino ye vasaṁtyapi rasātale ca daiteyāḥ saṁsthitāḥ pannagāśca ye

Those creatures too who dwell in the crevices of the earth, and the daityas established in Rasātala, and the serpents --

Verse 28 (skanda.5.30.28)

na teṣāṁ vidyate sūryo nendurnānye mahāgrahāḥ nāgnirdevamukhaṁ vidyunnaiva tārakako ṭayaḥ

"-- for them there existed neither sun, nor moon, nor the other great planets; neither fire, nor lightning, the face of the gods, nor the crores of stars."

Verse 29 (skanda.5.30.29)

kenālokena paśyaṁti samāni viṣamāṇi ca narakasthā narā loke na paśyaṁtyanyalokagāḥ

"By what light could they see level and uneven ground? Men in hell in that world could not see those who went to other worlds."

Verse 30 (skanda.5.30.30)

vicarantaḥ samaṁ ko vā mano rathaśatapradaḥ tṛṣṇāṁbhaḥ kṣudhitānnaṁ ca śrāṁtānāmatha vāhanam

"Who could be found, wandering together, a bestower of a hundred desires? Who could give water to the thirsty, food to the hungry, a mount for the weary?"

Verse 31 (skanda.5.30.31)

same śayyā jale nauśca roge satparicārakaḥ śreṣṭhauṣadhībhiḥ sanmaṁtraiḥ saṁpado vyādhisaṁkaṭe

"Who could give a bed on level ground, a boat on water, a good attendant in sickness, wealth of fine herbs and true mantras in the crisis of disease?"

Verse 32 (skanda.5.30.32)

suhṛdvideśe cchāyoṣṇe nirdhūmaḥ śiśire śikhī mahābhaye paritrāṇaṁ prakāśaśca mahāniśi

"Who could be a friend in a foreign land, shade in the heat, a smokeless fire in the cold, protection in great danger, and light in the deep night?"

Verse 33 (skanda.5.30.33)

sarvadaścaiva sarveṣāṁ manorathaśatapradaḥ eka eva bhavāndyotastvāṁ ca jānīmahe vayam

"You alone are the giver of everything to all, the bestower of a hundred desires; you alone are the light — thus we know you to be."

Verse 34 (skanda.5.30.34)

bruvaṁta iti te vyāsa śuśruvurmadhurāṁ giram śrutapūrvāṁ tamomadhyādviṣṇora tulakarmaṇaḥ

Speaking thus, O Vyāsa, they heard a sweet voice, one heard before, coming from the midst of the darkness — the voice of Viṣṇu, of matchless deeds.

Verse 35 (skanda.5.30.35)

na jānaṁti sthitaḥ kutra bhāṣate keśavo vibhuḥ śṛṇudhvamiti me vākyaṁ sarve caiva samāhitāḥ

They did not know where the mighty Keśava stood as he spoke: "Listen, all of you, with composed minds, to this word of mine."

Verse 36 (skanda.5.30.36)

dānamekaṁ sadā samya kciṁtāmaṇisamaṁ smṛtam sarveṣāmeva dānānāṁ dīpadānaṁ praśasyate

"There is one gift, ever rightly remembered as equal to a wish-fulfilling gem: among all gifts, the gift of a lamp is most praised."

Verse 37 (skanda.5.30.37)

tacca deyamataḥ sarvaiḥ śṛṇudhvaṁ tattvato bhṛśam mayā rasātale pūrvaṁ nāgā nāmanukaṁpayā

"Therefore it should be given by all; listen closely and truly. By me, formerly, in Rasātala, out of compassion for the nāgas --"

Verse 38 (skanda.5.30.38)

utpādito dīpavaro yena dhvastamidaṁ tamaḥ evaṁbhūtastu vāyūnāmapradhṛṣyo mahāprabhaḥ

"-- an excellent lamp was made, by which this darkness was destroyed. Being of this nature, it is unassailable by the winds, of great splendour --"

Verse 39 (skanda.5.30.39)

niṣkaṁpo nirmalo hṛdyaḥ susthiro bhāskaraprabhaḥ nātyuṣṇo nātiśītaśca devyā yogasamudbhavaḥ tena dīpaprakāśena gokarṇo nirvṛtiṁ yayau

"-- unwavering, spotless, pleasing, most steady, radiant as the sun, neither too hot nor too cold, arisen from the goddess's yogic power. By the light of that lamp, Gokarṇa attained peace."

Verse 40 (skanda.5.30.40)

nāgāḥ śeṣādayaḥ sarve nodyamānāśca saṁghaśaḥ dīpāddīpasahasrāṇi daduste vai śivāgrataḥ

All the nāgas, headed by Śeṣa, exalted in their throngs, offered thousands of lamps, lit from that first lamp, before Śiva.

Verse 41 (skanda.5.30.41)

parvateṣu samudreṣu vaneṣūpavaneṣu ca nadītīreṣu sarvatra dīpānprajvālya remire

On mountains, in oceans, in forests and groves, on riverbanks — having lit lamps everywhere, they rejoiced.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.30.42)

bhuṁjānāḥ pañca mūlāni divyāni kṣīrasaṁyutam paramānnaṁ ca māṁsāni makaraṁdaṁ ghṛtaudanam

Enjoying the five kinds of roots, divine foods mixed with milk, the finest rice-dish, meats, honey-nectar, ghee-rice --

Verse 43 (skanda.5.30.43)

candraśālibhavaṁ bhaktaṁ tāṁbūlaṁ saptadhā gatam madyamaṣṭaprakāraṁ tu bhāryāpītāvaśeṣakam

"-- rice grown by moonlight, betel prepared in seven ways, liquor of eight kinds, the remainder drunk first by their wives --"

Verse 44 (skanda.5.30.44)

śayaneṣu mahārheṣu hṛdyāsu vanarājiṣu vṛkṣamūleṣu sarveṣu vanacchāyopaśobhiṣu

"-- on costly couches, in lovely rows of forest trees, at the roots of all the trees, adorned with forest shade --"

Verse 45 (skanda.5.30.45)

ramante sma ca te sarve hyudveṣṭaṁtaḥ parasparam kāmatantropadiṣṭaistu śāstraiśca cuṁbanādibhiḥ

"-- all of them sported, embracing one another, with kisses and the like taught in the treatises on the art of love."

Verse 46 (skanda.5.30.46)

sūryatāpabhayānmuktāścaṁdraraśmibhayācca te vimuktāśca bhayāddhorātpipīlikodbhavāttathā

They were free from fear of the sun's heat, and free from fear of the moon's rays, and likewise freed from the terrible fear arising from ants --

Verse 47 (skanda.5.30.47)

sūryatāpena dāhaḥ syācchītaṁ caṁdramarīcibhiḥ mayūranakulādyaiśca pipīlīmaraṇādbhayam

"-- for ordinarily there is burning from the sun's heat, cold from the moon's rays, and fear of death from ants, from peacocks, mongooses, and the like."

Verse 48 (skanda.5.30.48)

sauvarṇāndīpakā nkṛtvā dvijebhyaste daduḥ punaḥ tena pātālamāśritya kṛtvā bhogavatīṁ purīm

Having made golden lamps, they gave them again to brāhmaṇas. By this, having taken refuge in Pātāla, having built the city of Bhogavatī --

Verse 49 (skanda.5.30.49)

vasaṁti sukhinastatra svargādaṣṭaguṇaiḥ sukhaiḥ evamaṁdhaṁ tamo devāḥ pātālāddīpato gatam

"-- they dwell there happily, with pleasures eightfold greater than in heaven. Thus, O gods, the blinding darkness departed from Pātāla, through the lamp."

Verse 50 (skanda.5.30.50)

etadguhyaṁ mayā khyātaṁ bhavatāṁ cānukampayā dīpadānamatoyūyaṁ kurudhvaṁ susamāhitāḥ

"This secret has been declared by me out of compassion for you; therefore, with composed minds, perform the gift of a lamp."

Verse 51 (skanda.5.30.51)

dīpāgninā vinā naiva tamodāru pradahyate nārāyaṇaparā devā niśamyātha samāhitāḥ

"Without the fire of a lamp, the wood of darkness is never burnt away." The gods, devoted to Nārāyaṇa, having heard this, then, composed --

Verse 52 (skanda.5.30.52)

papracchuste punaḥ sarve hṛṣṭā dāmodaraṁ vibhum brūhi nogniṁ jagannātha sa dīpo yena jāyate

"-- all of them, delighted, asked the mighty Dāmodara again: 'Tell us, O Lord of the world, of the fire by which that lamp is made.'"

Verse 53 (skanda.5.30.53)

ghore tamasi vai magnā nāgniṁ jānīmahe vayam devānāṁ mānaso vahniratha kṛṣṇena kīrtitaḥ

"'Sunk in terrible darkness, we do not know where to find fire.' Then the mental fire of the gods was declared by Kṛṣṇa."

Verse 54 (skanda.5.30.54)

tena dīpaṁ pratijvālya devāḥ śivaparāyaṇāḥ daduste śivamuddiśya sarvābhīṣṭaphalapradam

With that, having kindled the lamp, the gods, wholly devoted to Śiva, offered it, dedicated to Śiva, the bestower of every desired fruit.

Verse 55 (skanda.5.30.55)

datte dīpe tato devairdṛṣṭo hṛṣṭo maheśvaraḥ timiraṁ tadgataṁ cāpi jagadyena jaḍīkṛtam

When the lamp had been offered by the gods, the delighted Maheśvara was then seen; and that darkness by which the world had been stupefied also departed.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.30.56)

tato devāḥ sukhaṁ prāpuḥ svarge sendrapurogamāḥ rājyaṁ bhogānvitaṁ prāpya sārdhaṁ strībhiśca remire

Then the gods, headed by Indra, obtained happiness in heaven; having obtained a kingdom rich in enjoyments, they rejoiced together with their wives.

Verse 57 (skanda.5.30.57)

dīpadānaphalaṁ jñātvā daiteyāścāpi vismitāḥ tathaiva tatphalaṁ jñātvā vyāsa yakṣāśca vismitāḥ

Knowing the fruit of the lamp-gift, the daityas too were astonished; and likewise, O Vyāsa, knowing that fruit, the yakṣas too were astonished.

Verse 58 (skanda.5.30.58)

pūjayitvā mahādevaṁ puṣpaiśca nirmalairjalaiḥ dadurdīpa sahasrāṇi sarve śivaparāyaṇāḥ

Having worshipped Mahādeva with flowers and pure water, all of them, devoted wholly to Śiva, offered thousands of lamps.
